Kerry Washington and Chloe Moretz in Miu Miu at the Oscars: both underwhelming?

87th Annual Oscars Red Carpet Arrivals
Last night, during ABC’s red carpet coverage, they made it a point not to ask any women about their dresses. It was part of the #AskHerMore campaign, which Reese Witherspoon and Patricia Arquette referenced (E! also got rid of their manicam), and while it may sound admirable in theory, in practice it seemed ridiculous. As Kaiser wrote earlier, the red carpet fashion and jewels are a billion dollar industry. The dresses are made for free in exchange for publicity. Some of the interviewers were going out of their way to talk about the gowns without asking the designer names. When Lara Spencer spoke with Kerry Washington, she referenced the color of her dress and Kerry proudly volunteered that it was Miu Miu.

Kerry’s styling was so pretty, especially on camera, and it was a lovely dress but there was nothing particularly special or standout about it. Plus it had a peplum! Why?! Miu Miu got the memo about pale colors being in this season, but they’re stuck in trends that needed to die a couple of years ago. Something nice: I love the variegated fern sequins on the top, and the skirt is so pretty with that kind of honeycomb and oval beading.

Speaking of Miu Miu using bad trends that need to go away, here’s Chloe Moretz, in a pretty pleated floral pale strapless gown with incredible details, but look it has pockets! Chloe kept using those pockets, on the red carpet and while she was presenting. Chloe must not read Go Fug Yourself, but she’s just 18, she gets a pass.

Here’s another young attendee, Lorelei Linklater, 20, in Burberry. Lorelei loves goth styles and dark makeup. I know some of you will disagree but I can appreciate this look, probably because it reminds me of my heydey in the 90s. This dress is funky, it’s weird, and I think she’s working it. I hate the fact that the top is see-through with the embroidery for modesty though, it should be a solid color. As I’ve said before she stays true to her style. Plus I have a soft spot for her because I watched her grow up on screen.

I don’t like Kerry’s dress nor do I like her makeup.
    Chloe and Lorelei look cute.
And dresses with pockets are awesome!

    • Sarah says:

I am glad I am not the only one with pocket love! That being said, while Chloe was presenting I was yelling at her to get her hands out of her pockets. Just because one has pockets doesn’t mean one’s hands should always be in them. #PippaTip

    • Alarmjaguar says:

      More pocket love from me!

  2. Miran says:

Kerry’s dress is boring, I like Chloe’s though, it’s sorta offbeat and it fits her.

  3. Applapoom says:

Lorelei gives me a Maggie Gyllenhaal vibe. Is it the slightly goofy smiley face with the hunched back?

Hate all the dresses. Very mediocre. Miss the days when Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett brought their A-game.

  4. Lucy2 says:

I think it’s fine to ask about the gowns, The fashion is part of the show, but the problem is when that’s ALL that the women are asked about. Very glad that dumb mani-cam is gone.
Kerry and Chloe’s are both underwhelming but I strangely kind of like Lorelei’s.

The pattern on Chloe’s dress looks so much like my curtains it’s eerie.

  6. Bridget says:

Someone should tell Chloenthatbjust because a dress has pockets doesn’t mean you’re supposed to stand with your hands shoved in them the whole time.

And I appreciate the thought behind the Ask Her More campaign, but we’re talking about an event where what these ladies wear is actually multiple people’s jobs. From the stylists and their assistants to the fashion houses and the accessories.

    • chaser says:

Well it’s ask her more not ask her nothing. The media is refusing to strike a balance on this subject and are behaving like petulant children. All you have to do is ensure that questions cover the clothes and a little about the work and that the questions are similar for men and women. It is not that hard.

  7. I don’t necessarily like Lorelei’s dress, but it has great personality. That’s better than being a fashion doll, in some cases. It’s something that we don’t really see.

I think the not asking about gowns is ridic. But do they ask men what designer suits they’re wearing? If they don’t, then I see the point. But yeah, you’re wearing free designer clothes. The whole point is so that everyone knows where to buy it (or drool over it). I get the ire at the mani cam though. I think THAT’S stupid.

  8. Tracy says:

Kerry’s dress looked like an 80 year old wealthy white woman’s bedspread.

And Chloe’s dress was lovely –and don’t we all love a good pocket– but she kept her hands jammed in those darn pockets all night which looked very artificial and also made her outline look awful onstage. Chloe isn’t the slightest bit overweight, but she’s broad through the shoulders and rib cage, so a horizontal strapless neckline just made her look even wider, and once she stuck both hands in the pockets, further expanding the fabric horizontally, she looked like a home appliance — just huge when viewed from straight on. Vertical lines for her body type from now on! And only one hand in a pocket at a time…even better, none!

Strapless dresses really only work on someone with narrow shoulders and a long neck – Rosamund Pike is a great case in point.

  9. Ginger says:

I watched the red carpet on E! and they asked the men and the women what they were wearing but in addition talked about everything else too. I don’t see anything wrong with that. I find the whole breakdown of what they are wearing to be fun and frivolous. But sure, ask the women AND the men too about their work in addition to that. I thought Kerry’s dress was too bridal. The top just didn’t seem to fit her very well. I liked Chloe’s dress mainly because I have a few dresses with pockets and I love it. She looked so young and fresh.

  10. LaurieH says:

Kerry Washington’s dress is completely underwhelming and screaming David’s Bridal. Chloe Moretz looks great from the neck up, but the dress is absolutely swallowing her whole. As to Loralei Linklater, I don’t know what the heck that dress is, but it may be one of the ugliest and cheapest looking dresses I’ve ever seen on a red carpet.

  11. Marianne says:

Chloe’s dress looks like Anne Hathaway’s dress in The Princess Diairies…

    • Curious Cole says:

OmG, it is just like Anne’s Princess Diaries dress! Good eye, Marianne. Hathaway was really being channeled on the red carpet; Kerry’s dress is nearly identical to Anne’s 2013 Golden Globes gown.

  12. Kiddo says:

The first dress is mother-of-the-brideness, the second is J Crew Holiday-wear, and the third is the nepotism-special.

  13. scout says:

None, but I find Kerry W very pretentious, very “put on face” all the time when she speaks. Hard to like her.

  14. QQ says:

Thanks God They Did away with the stupidness of the Manicam and Giulianna bugging out in the carpet… is like after the tequila mess with George Clooney they told her to stay Inside and not bother the big name stars anymore, pull the cute stuff at the Grammy’s but not with the A List LOL

  15. Sos101 says:

I think Chloe is a great actress and I think she always dresses well. And tbh, I would be using the pockets of any dress I wore. It solves the age old question of what do you do with your hands when posing for a photo?

  16. Greek Chic says:

Chloe’s dress looks so much like my grandma’s duvet.

  17. kri says:

Let’s Kick Start a lovely place with trees and flowers where all peplums can go to be buried. KW is gorgeous, but I wanted more from her. And less peplum. I don’t mind pockets, but Chloe looks like she is being consumed by fabric.

  18. Abby says:

I had a college formal dress JUST like Kerry’s… in 2006. White, sparks, satin, peplum top, pink embellished flowers, column skirt. Seriously!

Chloe putting her hands in her pockets all night bothered me. It makes her look hunched over!
