Kim Kardashian covers AdWeek: ‘It’s not that I brand myself like I’m a celebrity’

kim1

Kim Kardashian covers the new issue of AdWeek, and she looks especially kat-faced in the editorial. Some of you have claimed that Kim has had some new “work” to her face. Perhaps. It might explain why she didn’t go out on Oscar night a week ago – she was still “healing”. As for the AdWeek interview, it’s about as vapid as one would expect from Kim Kardashian. She literally talks about selfies and sharing her life on social media and that’s it. Some highlights:

She loves selfies: “So many people think that taking selfies is just ridiculous. For me, what’s so funny is I love taking pictures and posting them on social media just for memories. I’m kind of letting them know, yes, it is ridiculous, but it’s all fun. I take it more as a fun, emotional scrapbook that I love to look back on.”

She’s not a celebrity? “It’s not that I brand myself like I’m a celebrity. It’s just I’m living my life and sharing a part of my life with the world.”

Being so active on social media: “I love sharing my world with people, so I don’t see me just having a freak-out and just stopping. Will I do it forever? I’m not sure. But I love the whole idea of it, especially because you get to share things your way.”

Her family is just a normal family: “I hope they get out of it that we are a normal family. They may not think we’re normal, [but] we are a family like everyone else’s that goes through so many different things and we’re always there to support each other. There’s always a family member that someone can relate to…We still have a few more years left in us.”

[From E! News]

A lot of people complain (justly) about the prevalence of Kardashians in our celebrity gossip world, but for years now, I’ve defended them as gossip mainstays. There are SO MANY slow gossip days saved by the presence of a Kardashian wearing something awful or doing something stupid. If the “real” celebrities are all being sort of boring, why not spend a little time with gossip-filler like the Kardashians?

Kim also spoke to AdWeek about her iOS game, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood and how it’s an enormous success. Apparently, Kanye was the one to tell her she should put her name on a game, but the success of the game surprised everyone. You can read more here.

We have finally reached the bottom of the pool of shallowness that is Kim Kardashian. There’s no essence or curiosity of anything that is not herself. I’d actually feel sorry for her if I cared.

    • michelle b says:

Right. A kiddie pool has more depth than Kim K.

    • Tristan says:

It’s enough to make one weep! With so many more deserving celebs to choose from, why one earth would anyone want to put that pointless bore on their cover???

    • bettyrose says:

But she puts herself out there for ridicule and we lap it up because it’s fun and there’s no shame in ridiculing someone who’s made a fortune from it. If she did anything evenly remotely valuable to humanity, we’d have to start giving her a pass on things.

  2. BlueMelca says:

    She’s like ZooLander, 1 facial expression all.the.time.

    • briargal says:

A mannequin–just change her clothes and hair once in a while. But there is no brain there!

  3. Veritas says:

That’s true we as much as we hate on the kartrashians we all love to talk crap about them too. Cus they make it so easy to talk crap about the ugly outfit that doesn’t fit on Kim.

  4. maeliz says:

When I think of normal families, the Kardashians don’t come to my mind.

    • bettyrose says:

Yeah that part was pretty funny but maybe she really doesn’t know the difference?

  5. Jan Harf says:

Eh. I like the cover pic.

  6. vauvert says:

I normally do not post on anything Kardashian because it just encourages the beast, you know, but since you asked… The bad thing about having this horrendous family over saturate the media with their presence is threefold:
    1. They dumb us all down. Seriously, if a linguist did a study of all their interviews and shows I am quite certain it would reveal that collectively their reading and vocabulary level is perhaps that of a ten year old. And I am being generous.
    2. They lead a whole generation of young people, particularly women/teens to believe that you can actually create wealth out of nothing but posting selfies, posting naked selfies, posting beach selfies, posting bathroom selfies… What these young people completely miss was that behind the scenes is a ruthless woman who was extremely well connected and already rich through her two successful marriages and who, at the cost of any shred of public dignity, was willing to sell her children in any way to make them even wealthier and famous. This is not a family that came out of nowhere, they are already well placed and well connected and who took advantage of that by releasing a sex tape when the celeb sex tape thing was still fairly new… But I bet a great deal of their fans are smitten with them partially because they still hope to emulate that success, ignoring the fact that you can’t duplicate that.
    3. They actively encourage missing out on education and portray image as being the ultimate goal. Not happiness, not health, not family or decency or kindness or charity… Skip school, take pics, be thin, be in magazines – the ultimate goal. Be seen with designers, train your waist, get procedures to look like someone else… Sleep around. No matter how inappropriate the partner is, do anything in public or private – as long as you can post about it later, and if you achieve notoriety then hey, you won at life. And that is truly sad and should not be encouraged, because while it may make Kardashians happy, I truly believe that most human beings actually need something with a bit more depth and substance in order to be really happy.

As fas as gossip goes, I may disagree with a lot of Lainey, but I do respect her for one thing – she NEVER posts about them and you know what? Her gossip site seems to be doing ok.

    • briargal says:

Wow! Well written and totally true in all aspects.

    • Lindy79 says:

I want to hug you, truly!

    • Ginger says:

You made some great points here. Especially about their lack of education and promotion of such. I’m always a bit ticked when I see any celebrity diss education.

    • Chrissy says:

      Bravo, vauvert. Very well said.

    • Tristan says:

      That is really well written!

    • Mean Hannah says:

I agree with you on everything except for one little point: her “success” is being replicated, albeit at much smaller scale. We now have hundreds of blogger stars who make 6 to 7 figures posting selfies and such. Granted, the wealthier and better connected ones achieve their status faster but we now have millions of young people (and adults) who daydream about chucking the daily grind for the glamorous life of selfies, store openings, fashion week, sponsored trips, clothes, makeup, concerts, whatever. And unlike real celebrities, their life is their brand 100% so they can’t ever stop documenting every second of their lives. It’s an exhausting way to live with a short lifespan. I wonder what all these style, beauty, lifestyle bloggers who quit their job to become full time bloggers are going to do, once they aren’t so young and popular anymore.

      • vauvert says:

Thank you everyone for the replies! You may well be right Hannah about successful bloggers whose only content is their bodies – I honestly do not know because I don’t follow any of them. I completely ignore Twitter (except on Oscar night, LOL) and Instagram, but I do follow lots of blogs – for recipes, DYI, sustainable lifestyles and crafts. (I am old fashioned like that) and I do believe that those people have created a niche that will continue to grow. Heck, gossip blogs will stay successful too because humanity has always been interested in that.
But I think that these celebrities, large or small, including KKK, who are only famous for being famous, will crash and burn sooner or later because there is truly nothing feeding the fire. Whoever their current followers are, one day they will wake up needing real money to pay bills, and looking at the KKK pics of their latest purchase, ridiculous clothes and shenanigans will not provide that, nor will efforts to emulate them. I think right now it is a vicious circle fuelled by media interest but in real life what do they have an impact on?
We can all hasten that day by the choices we make on social media, ignoring everything they do.
Oh – and I would be curious to see the reports the brand execs get that suggest to them that a celebrity endorsement has a certain dollar value. Having five million followers does not necessarily translate in sales, as evidenced by movies which flop despite starring big names, and even, as far as I can tell, self styled brands selling under the KKK’s names. Maybe some of you know different?

    • possiblegirl says:

This is the best thing I’ve ever read on this site, regarding this family. The best.

    • chaine says:

@vauvert, you have just insulted ten-year-olds everywhere! lol. seriously, I have known four-year-old girls that were more articulate and intelligent than Kim Kardashian.

    • atrain says:

Very well said, and I completely agree with you.
I used to find the Kardashians harmless gossip fodder, but now that my daughter is getting older, I find them to be disgusting, and a scary image that I need to protect my child from. The vanity, vapidness, and narcissism that they project is not something that I want my daughter to strive for. Getting away from them isn’t as simple as turning off the tv, because they are everywhere. If anything, I suppose the only benefit to having them in our faces is that I can use them as a constant example of what not to do with your life, but I’d rather just not see them at all.

    • Valois says:

I’d love to read more comments from you 🙂

  7. yennefer says:

What kind of work has she done this time? Her katface looks perfectly usual to me.

  8. swack says:

What is with her left eye? Does she always half close that one only? Most people don’t put their “emotional scrapbook” out there for everyone to see.

  9. Vampi says:

Serious wonk eye on her now. And SHOCK…she’s wearing black. She looks awful.

  10. here's wilson says:

Ok. .who the hell takes pictures of themselves – doing nothing mind you – to make a ‘scrapbook of memories’?? THEMSELVES

  11. SnarkGirl says:

What’s she done to her face this time? She’s got a combination of Paris Hilton wonk-eye along with the strange shape to her eyes that aging celebs get after one too many facelifts. Even with photoshop it’s obvious.

I can’t help but wonder when this is going to catch up to her. There are risks with Botox, and with surgery and with the amount of both she has done, she’s really playing Russian roulette with her face – and her life. Is she going to be the next Michael Jackson by the time she’s 40?

  12. InvaderTak says:

The way her eyes are it looks like she’s had some botched plastic surgery. Or the surgery she did have has shifted or something. It’s really distracting.

  13. Mar says:

Why is the media so obsessed with this shallow human?

    • word says:

The media is only obsessed with the Kardashians when there is nothing else going on in Hollywood. They are just gossip filler.

      • CG says:

I used to work at a celebrity gossip blog and Kardashian stories far and away always generated the most page views. Trust me, if people would stop clicking/commenting on Kardashian stories, blogs would quit writing about them.

      • word says:

        @ CG

It’s because people love to hate them. You can get tired of loving someone but you never get tired of hating them !

  14. Josefa says:

She had the prettiest almond-shaped big eyes. Nowadays she barely looks human.

  15. Nick says:

I’m trying to think of anything she has mentioned besides selfies, instagram, Kanye, KUWTK, and her family. Then I remembered, didnt she once mention the genocide of the Armenians (she is Armenian) by the Turkish government “was like, bad”?

    • word says:

She also said she wanted to eradicate racism lol remember that? I have yet to see her actively take part in any anti-racism campaigns. She also said she wanted to run for the Mayor of Glendale.

This is the best description of them I have ever seen as to why they are bad for so many teens and young 20 somethings to have followed them for so many years.

Your whole post was amazing, though.

  17. Jayna says:

So selfies of her face, ass, and boobs day in and day out are memories of her life to look back on? LOL That is her life, I guess. She does throw the token one in here and there of her daughter or of a selfie with her sisters all doing the same sellfie pose.

    She is so vapid.

    • swack says:

That is a sad life. I LOVE looking back of all the pictures I have of my children. I can tell you that I can count on my hand how many pictures I have of myself (I hate having my picture taken and I take horrible pictures). My poor grandchildren won’t have any of grandma that are older than about 40 years old (my pictures for the yearbook at the high school I taught at).

  18. msw says:

    What!!! Just what.

  19. word says:

I hate how she thinks she invented “selfies”. She’s just the only “celeb” shallow enough to post them 24/7. I guess she has nothing else to do. It’s also funny that she says she just does it for “fun”. Is that why her and her husband spent their entire honeymoon editing ONE wedding pic just to post it ?

The reason she’s so active on social media is because she doesn’t sing/act or do anything else. Social media IS her “job”. Without instagram/twitter this girl wouldn’t exist.

    • chaine says:

Bingo. She has no talent for anything. At some point in the future, when her star has significantly fallen, we’ll probably see her do another sex tape, and she’ll have come full circle back to where she started.

      • word says:

She’ll end up being a “momager” for North. She’s going to push that girl to be a celebrity who prances around for the paps. Let’s hope North refuses.

  20. RockytopNC says:

She had work done on her face two weeks ago ..there were Photos of her coming out of her “skin” doctors covered up with dark glasses and a fur scarf pulled up but in a couple of shots you can clearly see to dark bruises on the lower part of each of her cheeks and one on her chin…looking at the photos above you can see they sucked out the fat pockets under her cheek bones and reinjected them on top of her cheek bones to build them up and into her chin to make her face look longer and slimmer….also her lips were plumped up…but it looks like the one eye area is being drawn down and out of position from the work….
She was going for a longer face and ended up looking like a cross between a goat and a Grey Alien….You know that one step that would take her into Joan Rivers territory …? She just crossed it……UGH !

  21. Kim has now become a Wonkeye, and this new long face makes her look older…no turning back.

  22. Joh says:

I can not unsee her wonky eye.
I will forever blame OJ Simpson for foisting this family into our collective contiousness.
Google th e old footage of Chris swearing that her ex-husband Robert would NEVER EVER tamper or distroyed evidence to protect his friend!
Ha! Didn’t believe her then and she is even less honest now!
Add a striking looking daughter and a boring sex tape and here we are.

  23. tabasco says:

I almost (*almost*) feel sorry for her. She has no idea what “life” is. I don’t just mean non-wealthy life. Not very bright, no apparent interests, no meaningful relationships that aren’t in some way based on commodifying everything. I tend to think she’s a rather unhappy person who doesn’t know why she’s unhappy, and just meanders through life according to whichever puppetmaster she has at the time. She may be rich, but there is no richness to her life whatsoever.

The only upshot I see to Kim is that she’s at least better than Paris Hilton. A very, very low bar indeed, but Paris is actively mean-spirited while Kim is just……Kim.

Totally agree with Joh that it’s all OJ’s fault. Or maybe more accurately, their father’s fault. Yes, the s*x tape and such, but the only reason she gained any notice as Paris’s sidekick in the firstplace is b/c of her last name. And here we are.

  24. MarcelDeux says:

Remember those old shows on VH1 that were titled “When such and such Ruled the World”? Someday they’ll make a similar show, “When the Kardashians Ruled the World”. We hate to love them but we do!
