Shailene Woodley: ‘I haven’t taken Advil since I was a kid, probably 10 years’

Shailene Woodley

These are photos of Shailene Woodley and Theo James at the Berlin premiere of Insurgent. Shailene is wearing an Emilia Wickstead dress and looks awesome. I didn’t like her Ralph Lauren in London because the dress was so subdued, unlike her personality. This is a nice change and very modern. The bright yellow pop of the skirt feels fresh, and the keyhole detail of the top works surprisingly well.

Shai’s given several interviews lately. She told Cosmo that she had “no idea” who Kylie Jenner is. She also couldn’t name any member of One Direction, which scores some instant points. She admitted to Belfast Telegraph that living in the Divergent world would mean she’d be Factionless. Of course. She’s an eternal couch jumper. Shailene spoke with the Guardian for a large interview. The journo notes that she gave him a ginormous hug upon meeting. Here are a few excerpts.

She makes her own medicine: “Yeah, absolutely. I’m a fan of western medicine as well, because if you have something that could be life-threatening, antibiotics save lives every day. But the thing with medicine nowadays is there’s this lack of understanding of our bodies on a deep personal level. If you have a headache or insomnia, it’s so much easier to take a pill for that than to deal with the core problem, which could be a very simple fix. I haven’t taken Advil since I was a kid. It’s probably been close to 10 years.”

Her toothpaste ingredients: “It depends on your needs. I like to have clay in there, because it helps detoxify or rid our bodies of heavy metals and radioactive isotopes. It just feels good for my body. Also, I think it’s part of our responsibility to ensure our descendants have water to drink and food to eat from soil that’s been preserved by our caretaking.”

Her transition to fame: “The fear was loss of anonymity in a way, but I really haven’t lost much of my anonymity. I can still live the life I’ve been living. I’m busier, but I would love to continue exploring and living this nomadic lifestyle.”

More on cellphones: “I didn’t have a cellphone after I filmed Divergent. I just realised that a phone wasn’t necessary in my life at that time, so I didn’t have one for a bit. I feel like we place too much importance on ourselves and on people needing to get hold of us. There is a responsibility that you have no matter what job you do to show up for people and to not let people down. But the ways you get from A to B can all be different and varying.”

Learning life skills from pole dancing: “I am learning really useful life skills, actually. I’m not being facetious. It’s part of the beauty of being an actor. [Pole dancing] is athleticism.”

[From The Guardian]

Shailene talks more about Edward Snowdon’s status as a “hero.” (That belief enticed her to play his girlfriend in the upcoming biopic.) She rambles on about stepping away from acting after the Divergent movies end, but they all say that. It won’t happen. I’m still somewhat fascinated by her approach to diet, medicine, and home cures. Shailene’s given some gross details about swallowing clay and thinks she’s discovered every home-cooked recipe. If she’s serious about not needing Advil for a decade, maybe there’s something to her homespun madness.

I like the look in the first picture and she’s been looking really pretty during this press tour (for this movie that I have not seen advertised outside the internet but whatever), the outfit doesn’t look as great in the other pictures though and her costar is so bland, I don’t know his name and i don’t even care.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah she looks really good here.

      I’ve thought about trying clay-based toothpaste before…

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Very pretty from the front.

I got interested in the clay toothpaste the first time she brought it up, and the oil swishing for your teeth, but I just chickened out.

  2. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Remind me of why I am supposed to care about anything this twit has to say?

  3. Jen says:

Do whatever works for you, girl. Although, sometimes I get the “I am the first person who has ever lived so purely and respected my body so much” vibe I get from people who are really into health and nutrition.

Unrelated, does Theo James look like he lost quite a bit of weight to anyone else? His face looks gaunt.

    • Diana B says:

I noticed him looking slimmer in the face too. What’s up with that?

    • Alessio says:

he got bigger for the role but he’s usually this ‘thin.’ he claims to not working out as much when doesnt have to do it for a movie, and he did a movie with rooney mara inbetween insurgent and this press tour and he played a priest so maybe it’s also that? to look more natural…could be
they both look so good in this press tour but shai’s clothes, idk, last year she picked better clothes but thats my preference

    • LB says:

I don’t know if that’s her attitude or if the media treats her that way (like she discovered it). She is very different from typical Hollywood so the media tends to latch onto those differences and blow them up until the public is sick of it and her.

I dunno…I really like her, and I didn’t think I would when I saw her on the idiotic show. So maybe I have rose colored glasseds. I think she’s a good actress – also very naturally pretty. She does say a lot of annoying things in interviews but she’s also refreshing and amusing in her lack of knowledge about pop culture. Would that I did not know who Kylie Jenner was or all the men Taylor Swift dated lol.

  4. ToodySezHey says:

Why do have to hear about her alternative health choices all the time like she is thr first person to ever discover a co-op?? If I wanted to hear that I would just go down to whole foods and corner a hipster as they buy black soap and Dr. Bronners.

Also, if you are healthy you shouldn’t be getting headaches. I used to have constant migraines. But then I moved out of the house and away from my batsh!t crazy mom and et voila, I was cured. I usually only ever get a mild headache if I am dehydrated or my period is due.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

Hahaha. So true. I would be able to tolerate this girl’s enthusiasm a bit more if it didn’t have such an air of “I discovered this amazing sh*t all on my own and am now so graciously imparting my wisdom on you! You’re welcome!” I work with a couple hipsters who are exactly the same–early 20s who think everything they discover is SO new and noone has ever digured it out before them.

Also, I had an Army buddy who never took medicine of any kind. He said he couldn’t ever remember having a headache. And he drank like a fish and ate garbage. 😉

    • LB says:

I used to get so many headaches when I was younger that I thought it was normal to have them every other day. Found out much later that it wasn’t.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Uh, hormones… I got migraines from 14- about 40. Now on the rapidly waning ovary path, they are gone, have been for years. Never get them anymore, but unfortunately one of three of my kids does. 🙁

      • Soxfan says:

Be warned…I had the exact same issue, same ages and all. Once menopause reared its ugly head, those pesky mothers came back with a vengeance. I am 55 and am now on a daily med to control them-I was getting 2 a day and that never happened when I was younger. One day, I had 3!! One of my 2 children (girls) has them and I feel terribly. 🙁 Crossing my fingers for you. 🙂

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I feel for you both. I’ve only had a few migraines, and they were completely debilitating. It hurt to see and smell and hear. I feel so bad for chronic migraine sufferers.

  5. Miran says:

Yeah……..try having my genetic migraines that make me literally go blind for a few hours and then we’ll talk about natural headache remedies.

    • FLORC says:

That’s the issue I took with this too. I have migraines that seem to run in my bloodline. I’ve been on botox for 2 years now as treatment and it’s a lifesaver. It has been a lifesaver. Pill form meds only worked as I felt one coming on. This treatment works to stop them ahead of symptoms and I don’t look frozen.

This kid speaks like people shouldn’t be using these meds because she can get by without them and that’s ignorant to factors she leaves out. Mostly I think because they don’t apply to her.

There’s truth to what she says, but she takes it too far sometimes and speaks like she’s enlightening the world to these secrets.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Not only that, she’s a child, what does she know about pain at 25 or 18 or whatever age she is. Try natural methods when you’re in your forties and beyond and then tell me how you want to give up your Advil. I believe in trying to live a healthful life, in harmony with the environment and not popping too many meds but just because someone is wearing home spun clothing it does not make them any kind of authority on anything. Many times home remedies are useless and sometimes dangerous, one should never try any of this alternative crap out unless you thoroughly research it first. Especially with medicine, talk to a doctor or advice nurse, most of them are knowledgable and can give an informed opinion on credible therapies.

  6. CL says:

    MOAR Theo James!!

I am to the point of reading every interview with SW. She is so earnest and enthused about everything, especially when she thinks she’s discovered something that’s been around for centuries (soup).

  7. Sarah says:

She looks fantastic. She still bugs me at times, but she seems very genuine in her nuttiness.

    • DarkSparkle says:

“genuine in her nuttiness” is perfectly put.
She’s growing on me like a fungus.

  8. teatimeiscoming says:

Clay doesn’t “rid our bodies of radioactive isotopes.” No.

    • Miran says:

      Palm, meet face.

    • BW says:

Agreed. That drives me crazy. She’s going to accidentally poison herself if she “makes her own medicine” and doesn’t understand chemistry or biology.

And I’ve never taken Advil. So what?

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Exactly. It binds nutrients, though. That’s why people lose weight on it. Fools.

    • FLORC says:

She reminds me of a friends hippie roommate. Those salt rocks had to be near every electronic to keep us positive on a cellular level. Some of these methods are true or have a foundation in truth. Others are downright nutty.
I forgot how annoying this chick can be.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Snake oil salesmen have always been with us, and as P T Barnum taught us, there’s a sucker born every minute.

  9. lemon says:

    Gah! The shoes!

  10. Astrid says:

Eh..I smoke, drink, and eat red meat and I can’t remember the last time I took Advil or any pain killers. Granola crunching mentality doesn’t have the corner market on pain management.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Another Astrid here to second your comment (less the smoking). Even my arthritis is managed with Curcumin.

  11. Who ARE these people? says:

She didn’t take Advil because most kids don’t take Advil if they’re at all healthy. Clay didn’t make her healthy; youth did. Sigh…

    • lucy2 says:

I know, right? I didn’t take anything when I was younger either, but give it a few years, Shailene.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. I didn’t need Advil when I was her age, either.

      • FLORC says:

        GNAT
I did, but I was very active and broke a lot of bones. I think she’s saying people would rather take an easy and temp fix over curing the condition. Her since she was 10 comment though is humble brag and drifts off point.

  12. shizwhat says:

I havent taken medication since I was a teenager and when I had an unexpected hospital stay they doped me up on some form of synthetic morphine and all I have to say is hell yes! Good lord that felt so good and I didnt feel spacey at all. It was like every pain in my life, physical or mental, past or present just disappeared. That was the best I felt in my whole life. Hahahaha!

    • Courtney says:

      Hahaha! YES!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I know what you mean. Once in the hospital, they gave me something to relax me before an operation. I could completely see how people get addicted to stuff. It was fabulous.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

I recently had a procedure and they gave me Demorol, I think it’s called, it was the first time in 25 years that I was completely pain free and reasonably alert, it was the only nice thing about the procedure and it wore off after two days but wow, I understand how people get “hooked on a feeling” so to speak.

  13. Loulou says:

Her views seem less radical then other neo-hippies/alternative medicine people I know. At least she gives credit to Western medicine. I know people who seem to think any medicine made in a lab is actually The Man trying to poison you.

    • ISO says:

Giving credit to western medicine is the new trendy pre-empt. Anyway I haven’t taken advil in 3yrs as an experiment. I prefer to learn pain management through “dealing” and preventative health. Advil may be what cigarettes have devolved into -once thought benign now known to be gnarly. Some companies are adding warning labels about liver damage- i think Shalene is onto something.

      • FLORC says:

        ISO
Those warning labels are for acetaminophen. It’s a common pain reliever put in a lot of things. The liver damage came into play because people were taking meds that all contained that. Advil for this. Tylenol for that. A dissolving flu or cold reliever. Maybe a PM pill to aid in sleep, but also relieved pain and had that in it too. Also, people were not drinking enough water to cleanse their bodies and were drinking alcohol over 2 servings a night. That is why there’s warning labels.
People were abusing multiple pain relievers that gave them high levels of acetaminophen. Instead of taking 1 pill for the headache/joint pain/sleep aid.

To add some were not taking the rec dosage of 1 or 2 pills every 4 to 6 hours. Some were taking 10. I had a patient that admitted to nearly 20 pills a day all from acetaminophen sources.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

It’s important to understand the medicines one takes and the risks. It’s a simple as that. There are possible side effects to all medications. Advil, ibuprofen, is a medicine one should take prudently, as needed, it does have some “gnarly” side effects and no one should take it without knowing about them. So does Tylenol, acetaminophen, and it is the number one deadly pain killer because of accidental overdose and liver toxification.

  14. Shambles says:

I could live without the smugness that I get from most of her comments, but I kind of sort of agree with her about the Advil thing. I try to stuck to marijuana for any of my little day to day ailments (and some of the bigger ailments), and it usually works faster and keeps me feeling better longer. That said, the smugness. Everyone is different, and some methods of pain relief work for some people while others don’t. It’s not up to her to decide which are acceptable.

  15. Lilacflowers says:

I have never taken Advil. I took Aleve when I broke my foot 10 years ago. Some serious prescription painkillers for cancer surgery. Tylenol a few times a year for injuries. Unless there is something wrong, Shalilene, people don’t take meds. Now, talk to us if you develop migraines or arthritis.

  16. Ohlala says:

how about Theo James?? He is HOT.

  17. Insomniac says:

Feh. I had to stop taking Advil last year; it doesn’t play nicely with another drug they put me on. I still miss it. Tylenol doesn’t cut it.

  18. Merritt says:

I wish celebs would STFU about health related things. There are some exceptions like Angelina Jolie writing about her decision to have surgery and Hugh Jackman and his skin cancer. But on the whole, most need to just stop.

  19. Linus says:

This movie has zero hype and the reviews are terrible

  20. tealily says:

I do appreciate that she gave a shout-out to the fact that antibiotics save lives. I think a lot of people go through an all natural phase like this. I’m sure her feelings about all this will become more nuanced as she gets older.

  21. rainy17 says:

I find her insufferable. I would roll my eyes if I didn’t have a migraine.

  22. Tracy says:

Don’t love the dress, but she certainly has an amazing body for clothes.

  23. Shazza says:

    Weird shoes, yo

  24. Isa says:

I never used to take OTC pain meds either. Until I got pregnant with my son 4 years ago. I started getting headaches that lasted for days. I’ve had them ever since. They’re always over my right eye and usually due to the weather.

  25. Anguishedcorn says:

since she was a kid…. ten years ago….

    man do i feel old.

  26. Angie says:

I’m not really a fan of this girl but one thing I like is that she strikes me as an AUTHENTIC kook. I don’t think she’s trying to be cool or to impress anyone. I LOL at her acting like she’d discovered homemade soup stock but her enthusiasm is sort of endearing.

  27. Tessa says:

Id never get bored of slapping her

  28. Ming says:

    I like her.

I also have similar healthy habits and natural remedies and use them on the daily. I also enjoy smoking the green.

More importantly, I’m not smug. And neither is she. Interviewers show up with questions, she just answers..and props to her for staying true to herself in the responses.

I love celebitchy and I love to betch. I just save up all my hate for Kim.

  29. Cc says:

    Theo <3

  30. Emma33 says:

Shailene is what I call a “smug well.” (Taken from Brigid Jones’ Diary, where she called her smugly married friends “smug marrieds”).

(I have a chronic illness, which is why I’m sensitive to “smug wells”.)

  31. Ange says:

Good for her I guess. When I was young my hair was so long and thick it pulled on my scalp and I was always complaining of headaches. Believe it or not a hairdresser diagnosed the problem lol. Does it mean I was unhealthy? Nah. Even now I suffer a lot from neck and jaw tightness from grinding that causes headaches and be damned if I’m going through a whole day feeling sore just to score hippie points, I’m going to take what I need to so I can get through my day.

  32. lemon says:

Remember “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”? LOL worst dialog ever! I give her respect for having survived that horrible horrible show.
