Giuliana Rancic to move to Chicago: ‘I won’t be in LA on set as much’

People Magazine is squeezing as many stories out of their exclusive interview with Giuliana Rancic as possible. I can’t blame them, she’s a controversial figure who gets a lot of interest. So far they’re published no less than four stories on Giuliana, by my count, in the past week. Two of those posts were justifications for her tiny frame, with Giuliana blaming her low weight on a common cancer treatment drug in one story (some of you assumed it was Tamoxifen, although that hasn’t been confirmed) and then claiming, in a roundabout way, that childhood scoliosis contributed to her appearance. In that story, Giuliana said that recent criticism of her weight was “very hurtful to me” and that “even if I gained 20 pounds, my bones would still look the way they do.” It sounded like a lot of justification with some denial mixed in, but I don’t know her and she’s a cancer survivor. It’s possible there’s something going on with her health that even she doesn’t know about.

In a new interview with Giuliana, she reveals that she’s moving to Chicago for the foreseeable future.

The beleaguered Rancic is ready for a fresh start, in a new zip code. In August, the E! News host, her husband Bill and their 2-year-old son Duke will move full-time from Los Angeles to Chicago.

“Up until now, Duke’s been on our schedule,” Rancic says. “But he starts school at the end of summer and we want him to have a connection with schoolmates and not be going from city to city.”

And a bonus: The Rancics, who have lived part-time in Chicago (Bill’s hometown) and commuted back and forth for work and their E! reality show, Giuliana and Bill, just finished construction on their dream home. “Bill and I both grew up in the suburbs,” Rancic says. “We love that sense of community. And I have loved Chicago ever since we started dating nine years ago.”

And thankfully for Rancic, her job in front of the camera won’t be affected. “I won’t be in LA on set as much,” she explains. “But there’s a lot of work in New York and Chicago too. I don’t have to pick one or the other.”

Summertime in the city might be the perfect antidote to recent dark times. “I’m really looking forward to the move,” says Rancic. “I’m excited!”

[From People]

Does this mean that E! News is gradually letting Giuliana go or phasing back her role? If so, was this Giuliana’s choice? (I would doubt it.) I haven’t watched the show regularly, but whenever I’ve tuned in she’s been there. If she’s moving to Chicago at the end of the summer I would assume that she’s leaving E! News as a nightly reporter. Maybe she’ll still do weekend and/or special event coverage. We’ll have to see how they address it.

Meanwhile Fashion Police isn’t coming back until September, and that’s filmed so infrequently that Giuliana can fly out to do the segment and then fly back to Chicago. In another recent article on People, Giuliana explained that the joke she made about Zendaya’s dreadlocks (and apologized for twice) was “edited” and “taken out of context.” The article reiterates Kathy Griffin’s point that Giuliana didn’t write the joke. Giuliana adds that “On set, I made peace signs and I said boho twice… if I thought this joke could be interpreted another way, I never would have done it.” Giuliana also said that she received death threats on social media afterwards, which is despicable but sadly typical. (Twitter needs to take more responsibility and mete out swifter punishments for users who threaten and troll.)

It’s probably for the best that Giuliana is moving, both for her health and peace of mind. Chicago is such a great city and the people are really nice. I wouldn’t mind living there. I hope she’ll be happy but I get the sense she really loves LA and the spotlight.

Giuliana and Bill own a high end restaurant in Chicago called RPM Steak. Here’s a photo she recently posted with Bill and her parents. They spent Easter in Chicago.

Lunch…Chicago style 👏 Having so much fun with @billrancic and Mama & Papa DePandi at @rpmsteakchi Best.Lunch.Ever

Certainly moving to Chicago and out of the LA fishbowl would give her a bit more privacy if she wanted to deal with any eating disorders she may have. I just get the feeling from her People interview something is changing with her

  2. MG says:

Those are her parents in the photo.

I hope she’s getting some help for whatever her health issues may be.

  3. Kylie says:

We don’t want her in Chicago.

    • Jessica says:

They’ve already been living there part time before their house was done. Too bad

    • Jaded says:

I don’t think they’ll be bothering you specifically.

    • Caroline says:

I don’t think Chicago doesn’t want her. I never watched her on E! but she’s harmless. And the restaurant group that she and Bill have going w the RPM brand, which stands for Rancic, diPandi and Melman, is doing excellent business. She has plenty to do that isn’t in front of a camera. They’ve partnered w the sons of one of the biggest restaurateurs in the country, Rich Melman (Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises) and I am sure she’ll miss being in the “biz” in LA but it’s not like she’s moving to some backwater.

Her biggest sin is moving to the burbs 😉

  4. Jayna says:

Bill’s plan always was for them to live in Chicago one day, because that’s where Bill is always adamant he wants to live. She signed a new contract, though, with E back then. They bought a home in suburbia a few years ago and he renovated it, and then he said he got too great an offer on it and sold it and they moved back into the city again, with him promising to still have their dream home in suburbia one day. I didn’t think it was planned this early to move full-time there, but I imagine she’s being phased down in her scope of responsibilities. Ever since they brought Maria Menounos onto E, the writing was on the wall.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wow, her son is already in school? I thought he was about 3.

Good luck to her. I’m not a fan, but I hope she gets her health back.

    • Granger says:

Yeah, that confused me too — the article says he’s two, so I guess she means he’s going to preschool? Preschool isn’t prep school, for pete’s sake.

      • Jayna says:

I know. He is in no more than a preschool. It sounds like an excuse she is using for the move, and, really, it’s E phasing her out.

    • Courtney says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to move across the country for pre-school for a 2 or 3 year old.

Maybe 5 when he starts kindergarten, but it just seems like an excuse for a 2 year old.

  6. savu says:

I live in a Chicago suburb about 40 minutes outside the city… girl please do not move to my town. (It’s in the top 10 most populous cities in Illinois.) I don’t hate her or anything but like… just no.

    • Esmom says:

Last time they lived here it was in Hinsdale. I assumed that’s where they’re going back since presumably they know the people there?

      • savu says:

Ugh, Hinsdale seems like the PERFECT place for them. Sequester ’em over there. (Meanwhile I live in Naperville, plenty of “new money” snooty people here too. Luckily I live right on the border of Bolingbrook so I go shopping and out to eat there often. Nicer people with better attitudes, usually.)

  7. Meggin says:

That yellow dress is cute until you see her frail bone arms and you’re like ahhh

  8. Jenjennyjenjenjenn says:

She’s on the TODAY show right now. Denial. Such deep denial.

    • Vava says:

      of course.
I find it interesting that she posted a photo of all those steaks. Yeah, as if she would actually eat any of them.

    • Celebitchy says:

Thanks for the heads up, I am covering another story on her and will work it in.

    • Vava says:

I just watched her interview. Pink eyeshadow, messy hair, and lots of excuses and denial. I know she’s promoting her new book, but it would be better if she’d just calm down and retreat for awhile.

  9. lisa2 says:

I think as someone commented that her husband always wanted them to live in Chicago. She has been a bit resistant to my memory.

Regarding her job on E.. I read somewhere that some of the Entertainment shows have been bought by some company or that a few of them are going to combine.. I can’t recall where this was posted.. maybe Deadline. but if that is the case we will see many of these “Reporters” phased out of work or doing less. I thought it was going to be E’News and Extra or Access..

  10. Merritt says:

She is scrambling to sympathy these days due to the calls to get her off the air.

  11. Barrett says:

I do feel bad for her. I know people will not agree. She seems a mixed bag of family values from her upbringing, with love of LA famewhoring, with a dash of understanding about the difficulties of life due to cancer and infertility. She seems confused but still greedy for money.

  12. Crumpet says:

If she wants to be around for her family, she needs to do something about the malnourished state she is in. I hope she is working with a doctor and certified nutritionist. Being underweight is even more dangerous that being overweight. Much more, actually.

    • Kim1 says:

One in Five American Deaths related to excess weight. For Black women,my demo, almost 27 percent of deaths are associated with having a BMI 25 or higher.

  13. Jaded says:

I have no opinion of her as a celebrity or where she chooses to live as I don’t watch entertainment shows, however I do have a huge concern with her apparent eating disorder as I would about any young woman who struggles with eating disorders. It broke my heart when my sister died of it so I have nothing but sympathy for her and her family and wish them well.

  14. lucy2 says:

I can’t imagine she’ll be happy in Chicago, she seems to really crave the LA/Hollywood lifestyle. Hopefully it will be a positive change for her health though.
I think E is phasing her out and the move for school (preschool, LOL) is an excuse.

    • Paloma says:

I can’t see her living in Chicago, either. I’m thinking she will just commute more.

  15. lila fowler says:

She’s been threatening to move to Chicago and cut back on her tv time for YEARS. It has not happened, probably never will.

  16. twink says:

Is she controversial? Most people I’ve met either dislike her or hate her guts.

  17. Silvie says:

I imagine Bill enjoys the money she brings in with her book, show, Wal Mart wine but other than that: her vapidness, her social climbing, her obsession on Image must put a strain on their marriage.

That, and calling your son “the duke” is too much. Yeah, I know they call him Duke, but “the duke” is too much.

I take issue with other celebrities who name their kids: Prince, Royal, Reign.

Ick, ick, ick. Poor kids. Such narcissism is so destructive.

    • Alexis says:

      “the duke”? SERIOUSLY? LOL!

    • Giddy says:

My aunt had a regal looking little lap dog named Duke. She was crazy about that dog, but even she wasn’t crazy enough to call him “the Duke.”

    • jwoolman says:

The “royal” names were quite popular late in the 1800s and early 1900s, especially in black American communities but also elsewhere. Duke, Queen, King, Prince were popular. Maybe the other more generic ones also, not sure. (Somewhere there are lists of name popularities from census records.) For instance, Prince is actually the name of some maternal ancestor of Michael Jackson- maybe his grandfather or great-grandfather. I’m sure he enjoyed the double meaning of “Prince Michael” but it actually was a combination of established names in the family. That’s probably why he used it twice for his sons, some people do that for some reason. No worse than giving a kid the exact same name as his dad and grandfather and great-grandfather with a IV after it, I guess.

Since fashions in names come and go, sometimes people are actually returning to traditional names that simply have been out of fashion long enough that other folks assume they are newly made up.

  18. Skins says:

How will the entertainment world survive with her in Chicago?

  19. Nicolette says:

Wow. It must be nice to continually keep building dream homes, living in them for a couple of years and then going on to the next.

  20. kcarp says:

Can her husband have her committed for an eating disorder? How does it work? She doesn’t get it obviously. Her level of thin is not caused by medication….that is b.s..

I don’t know why it bothers me but she is a bag of bones…that is not skinny shaming that is saying she doesn’t look healthy.

People who jump on Kelly Clarkson or anyone and say but being obese isn’t healthy either, tell me who looks like they are going to die soon? Her face is very alarming.

    • Lisa says:

She’d have to be a danger to herself or others. I guess she technically is endangering herself, but she’d probably have to stop eating entirely for doctors to intervene. It’s sad, because I wonder if her husband has ever even tried to do anything. Staging an intervention for someone with an eating disorder is never easy or comfortable, but if he hasn’t, he’s enabling her.

      • kcarp says:

You know if she was a drug addict everyone would be screaming intervention. You could argue drug use is a choice as much as not eating.

It looks like she might collapse.

    • jwoolman says:

Maybe living in a Chicago suburb will make it easier for her to get help. Not such a fishbowl as LA. I don’t care if she ever admits she has an eating disorder, as long as she starts eating enough for any reason. The pictures of her in better times are amazing, she looked really good before. She must not have ever realized it.

  21. bettyrose says:

Don’t know her and have no opinion on her, but when I think Chicago I think FOOD. just saying.
