Sofia Vergara covers VF, talks Joe Manganiello, stereotypes & accent work

sofia VF

Even though Sofia Vergara’s expression on this Vanity Fair seems sort of worried/pensive, I still love this cover. She’s styled beautifully, her hair looks incredible, I love the way she’s positioned, and I like the simple fact that a 40-something Latina is the biggest thing on network TV these days and her Vanity Fair cover is utterly justified. This is the May issue. You can read VF’s excerpt here. Some highlights:

Getting with fiancé Joe Manganiello: “The day that I sent the press release [announcing the breakup with a different fiancé, Nick Loeb], Joe immediately contacted Jesse Tyler Ferguson like, Please, please, please tell her I want her number. And I’m like, Jesse, no, he’s too handsome. Then, after two days of Jesse trying to convince me, I’m like, O.K., give him my number. I’m thinking, I’m in New Orleans shooting, and he’s in L.A. Nothing’s going to happen. But we started talking a lot, and then he showed up in New Orleans. Since then we’ve been inseparable. There’s nothing about him I’d change other than the fact that he’s four years younger than me [he’s 38 to her 42].”

Working on her accent: “I hired the speech coach, and you have to work so much. It’s exhausting. It’s also boring. And I have a bad ear, you know? I’ve been in this country for 20-something years and I still sound like this . . . So I was going to auditions and the only thing I could focus on was the position of the tongue. I was not acting. And then I thought, If I can’t get a job with my accent, this is not a job for me.”

She knows what looks good & sticks to it: “Sometimes you read in the press like, oh, Sofía is wearing again the same shape dress, and I want to answer them and say, What the f–k do you want me to wear? Obviously there’s a reason why that’s what I go for.”

Whether her Modern Family character is a stereotype: “If Gloria is a stereotype, so what? Who wouldn’t want to be Gloria?”

Her boobs: “My boobs are, like, huge. My whole life, buying a bra was a nightmare. What I used to do when I moved to L.A., I found places like Frederick’s of Hollywood that make bras for [strippers]. Believe me, I wish I had fake boobs. I lay down and they completely go down like all the way, like here…It’s not fun.”

[From Vanity Fair]

That’s a cute story about Joe Manganiello trying to get to Sofia through Jesse Tyler Ferguson. I didn’t even know Joe and Jesse were friendly enough that Joe could get his bro to put him in contact. And I agree with her about her style – she knows what styles look good on her figure and she sticks to that. It sometimes means that she looks sort of uneventful on red carpets, but I don’t think any of us expect Cate Blanchett-esque avant-garde style from Sofia, do we?

you want to discuss something having to do with yur love for Ludacris?? Cause I KNOW you didn’t want me to Launch on the rage boner I have for Sofia’s accent and shtick

…and in this interview she doesn’t come off half as whatever it is she does like … Tripping all over the place trip trip accent trip trip titties trip trip our legendary latina beauty trip trip but im a blonde

      • mimif says:

I can’t believe you just outed me!

      • Kiddo says:

She’s gutted about Zayn leaving the group, she can’t be blamed.

      • mimif says:

Shhh you’ll raise the obsession police.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So agree about the accent if I get what you’re saying. I’m from the south and I can spot a put on over done bless my corn pone accent from a mile away. So annoying. Sofia strikes me as the Latina version of same.

      • QQ says:

GNAT my hate for that Overdone grating ass accent thing she does is legendary, and it is SUPER put upon, when i came here like 18/19 years back she was the one that could speak perfectly fine English in Univision in some shitty show so indeed she was the one to interview Anglos and translate for us FFS

Finally what boils down to me with her constant whining about how/what constitutes a real Latina and bemoaning darkening her hair is this: If you hate it so much why are you doing this Fiery spicy minstrel show you azzhole)

lastly Homes has MAD wisteria Sister tendencies, she’s never dated a dude that couldn’t get her somewhere ( but then Colombianas are kinda stereotypically known in Latin America as succubus that way… very very pretty and very very self interested

      • Hotrod says:

From this Colombiana, please feel free to go F yourself. Way to push more stereotypes.

      • luvLA85 says:

She was never taken seriously in Spanish speaking TV. I remember being a child and she was on a program called “fuera de serie”, her accent was fine. Now? Her accent gets worse with every show and every interview she does. She lays it on thick. I’ve always thought she wanted to be like Charo “la cuchi cuchi”. She gives us Latinas a bad name. People assume we all speak and sound that way. It is so annoying.

      • Maria A. says:

Her voice/accent makes me want to gnash my teeth and I grew up in the Southwest: New Mexico/Arizona, so I’ve heard plenty of accents. NONE of them made me want to grind my teeth till they broke or pull my hair out from the sheer torture of hearing it. Someone mentioned Charo elsewhere…Yes! That’s the shtick she’s doing, but at least Charo could play some gorgeous classical Spanish guitar.
And according to more than one person here, Vergara didn’t always have that accent, ehhhhh?
        Interesting.

  2. savu says:

Her hair is glorious. Good god.

  3. Pri says:

Finally, Sofia needed a Vogue cover but this will do!

So many starlets get a Vogue cover (Dakota). They should get more TV actresses to cover it (Julianna, Michelle Dockery, JLD)

  4. Jenny says:

It’s gross to try to get with someone literally the day they announce their breakup. But Joe and Sofia are the tacky wundercouple.

    • Lori says:

IKR? I was disgusted by this too. No doubt he’s an opportunist but that is just gross.

    • Sofia says:

I thought that too. Actually, he didn’t know her so I can only imagine he wanted to meet her because of how she looks… and right after a breakup… How charming ^_^

      • Michelle says:

Yeah I know, because most of the time people don’t pursue each other initially because they find each other attractive. We all have magic powers that allow us to get to know each other’s personalities and then pursue each other based on things like our amazing wit or our wonderfully warm hearts. Grow up.

  5. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I actually thought that was kinda creepy….. Like wouldn’t a normal person assume that someone who just got out a (difficult) breakup would want some alone time, NOT to have someone calling her for a date two seconds later.

    • Kara says:

totally my thoughts. what the heck.

he basically wanted “Sofia Vergara” as he has seen her on tv. he did not know her. thats another point that creeped me out.

      • Pri says:

So, guys, I think Sofia released the statement a few weeks after they broke up, I mean, it is a common PR thing. Confirming a break-up a while after it happens.

      • Ange says:

Well how was he supposed to get to know her other than asking her out?

    • Ava says:

I know but most guys are like this. It happend to me too several times. Its like they were just waiting for it and want to be the first to get because theiy fear there could be someone else who was faster then you. Because they know most guys are just like this. And sometimes it can help you to get over the frustrating seperation. When youve been in a unhealthy relationship for too long, a little flirt can do wonders for your soul

      • Artemis says:

I agree. I kind of like that, when some men really go for it. That’s bold. It doesn’t mean a woman has to date that person though. Flirting only can be nice too.

I know a lot of women fear being alone and/or not feeling wanted after a tough break-up so it can be illuminating in that way when you experience a guy or guys chasing after you. Like see, you are still attractive and wanted. Sometimes getting back into the swing of things helps better than reflecting over the past relationship.

  6. AG-UK says:

Some women cannot be alone needs a man to validate them even if successful. I have a friend like that as soon as she was on her own she was looking for someone else. My motto if you can’t be happy by yourself you can’t be happy with anyone else.

  7. Greek Chic says:

She’s a gorgeous woman. The only thing that I don’t like on her appearance are her eyebrows. I like full eyebrows but hers look a little messy.
Her fashion sense is not my cup of tea but it suits her.

  8. Kara says:

holy crap, that makes me think a lot less of Joe Manganiello.

what else could have motivated him to get her number than her looks and her image? especially right after she released the statement of her break up, like he was waiting in the bushes for that. ugh.

oh and their friend not accepting her No.

    • Allie says:

I think most people are initially physically attracted to those they give their number to. What then holds the relationship together is personality, interests, etc.

I think the timeline is a little fishy but who knows how long they were over before they officially broke it to the press.

    • Jenny says:

Well they had met each other before at some event and were pictured together. But it’s still super gross that he was totally waiting in the bushes biding his time until he could have her.

    • Michelle says:

@Kara, so are you really going to try to tell me that a guy has never approached you at random? Have all men had to get to know you with a blindfold on before they could ask you out, or do you just automatically think poorly of men who initially pursue you because they find you attractive? That is pretty basic human nature to me, I don’t really see how you’re finding fault there. Physical appearance attracts people, personality keeps them around. Lots of people have crushes on others before ever even holding a conversation with them. That does not make someone a bad person.

Also – Sofia is a big girl. If she didn’t want to entertain someone pursuing her after an relationship ended, she probably would’ve shut it down. Why assume that she wasn’t already over the relationship when it ended? Things happen.

  9. FingerBinger says:

Speech coach? I believe her accent is exaggerated.

    • mimif says:

I can’t even listen to her talk, it’s so affected.

      • Kiddo says:

Probably the mention of the speech coach is because she will have a miraculous improvement in enunciation with lack of accent in the near future.

    • Skins says:

Of course it is. It is her moneymaker, she is not going to lose it

    • V4Real says:

It might be slightly exaggerated but look at Rosie Perez. She’s PR born in Brooklyn and she used to get a lot of crap about her accent. People were saying she was born in NY so why is her accent so heavy. A co-worker of mine is Columbian and has been in NY for over 30 years, yet some people have a hard time understanding her because her accent is so heavy. I know other Latinas who have been here for many years but they just can’t lose that heavy accent. But if it’s an accent they’re proud of why should they want to lose it. It’s like criticizing the accent or dialect of Cockney. What about Southerners who have that heavy southern accent. I know plenty of them. I have a distant cousin from Ala. that lives in Jersey and he never completly lost his heavy southern drawl. Maybe because he moved to the east coast as an adult. Everyone is different.

      • Kiddo says:

Good point V4Real. Although I worked a long time to rid myself of New Yawk accent. It’ll creep out now and then in a word or two.

      • V4Real says:

Oh Kiddo keep the NY accent as long as it’s not Brooklyn ….just kidding all my Brooklyn peeps.

I totally understand. My close friend and former roommate worked hard to get rid of her Boston accent which I kind of liked. I happen to like accents, Australian being my favorite. I was wondering if I moved to Europe can I too, overnight develop a British accent like Madonna and Tina Turner did.

      • Michelle says:

@V4Real – Spot on! Accents are really bizarre sometimes in how they’re different for everyone. My uncle was born and raised in Cuba and has lived in the US since he was 19 (he is 64 now). Out of his 4 siblings, he is the ONLY one who retained a heavy Cuban accent. No clue why. Accents are different for everyone. Some people can’t shake them.

  10. minx says:

    I dunno, I think they’re a cute couple.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

She seems to like douchebaggy men. Joe is kinda hot in a MMA type way, but he talks WAY too much about him being a proper actor for someone whose career highlight is stripping to turn into a wolf….

  11. Whatwhatnot says:

Regarding Joe’s timing. I’m sure he knows people usually go public with a breakup in Hollywood a while after it happens, but he did seem ‘eager” to get with that. Then again, my guy friends all the time try to get to a relatively attractive chick fast once they find out she is single, because they think she won’t be single for long and it’s a race of “who gets to her before she get’s locked down.

Her accent is no where near as annoying as Rosie Perez’s accent. As a fellow New Yorican born and raised like Rosie, it was extremely eye-roll inducing. Even my mother, who came here at the age of 17 spoke with a better and clearer accent than Rosie and would get annoyed with the way she spoke.

  12. Sumodo1 says:

My housemate insists that when SV was on TV newscasts in Miami, her English was unaccented.

  13. Lisa says:

It’s funny when anyone gets knocked for wearing the same thing. Yeah, I wore this shirt last week. Ever heard of washing your clothes?

  14. Sofia says:

She isn’t a great actress if she can just play one type, right? Or should I say play herself?

  15. Miss W says:

Ok, I love her…but there’s no way in hell those boobs are real. And I also believe her accent is exaggerated for tv. I just accept it because it’s her character – or characiture, but whatever it’s cool.

  16. Abby says:

Aw, this interview makes me love her more. She’s funny.

  17. Michelle says:

Yikes so much hate on here for Sofia. I’m actually surprised by it. I find her to be very “real.” I’ve seen interviews with her and I was amazed at how much I actually liked her personality. She is obviously gorgeous, but always humble and self-deprecating. I think her and Joe seem like a very happy couple and to that I say good for them! A lot of posters here are finding fault with the fact that Joe pursued her right after finding out she is single; Sofia is a big girl and obviously could’ve shut it down if she wanted to. I don’t see the big deal or understand the need to find so much fault.

    • Anony says:

I completely agree…all this hate for a woman who hadn’t done anything wrong that I know of

  18. Boxy Lady says:

I hear less of an accent when she’s being herself (like in an interview) than I do when she’s playing Gloria. Also, after a certain age, an accent is usually much harder to lose. If she had come to the US as a kid, she probably would have lost her accent.
