Did George Clooney admit that the ‘jokes’ about his private life bothered him?

wenn22465059

I’ll admit it, I sort of glazed over when George Clooney started his promotional work for Tomorrowland last week, and every media outlet started running the same dozen quotes. It’s like Alamooney Mad Libs: “George Clooney confessed: he loves Amal’s _______ and her _____. He says he loves being married to her because _____.” The answers are 1) feet, 2) jawline, 3) free legal advice. But George is still talking and he’s trying to mix it up a little bit, although let’s be fair to him – how many different ways can he answer the “How has your life changed since getting married?” question? But when George spoke to E! News, I think he let a little truth slip out and it was very, very, VERY telling.

George Clooney is a very happy man. Like, very happy. Not only did his latest movie, Tomorrowland (in theaters on May 22), premiere at Disneyland yesterday, but along for the big event were his wife Amal Clooney and their niece Mia Alamuddin. The Oscar winner raved about married life.

“It’s fun,” he told me on the premiere’s blue carpet. “It’s really fun.”

The two were married seven months ago in Italy. He acknowledges that he was once the butt of many jokes about his long list of girlfriends and his apparent never-ending bachelorhood.

“There were all the jokes and the bits and I get all that stuff, but I couldn’t be happier right now,” said Clooney, who turned 54 last week. “I wake up in the morning and I think, ‘This couldn’t be better.'”

Amal, Clooney said, is getting adjusted to all the attention.

“Used to it as much as you can get used to it,” he said before pointing to the crowded carpet and saying, “I mean, this gets a little nutty. It’s tricky sometimes walking outside of a hotel and having people follow you and stuff. It’s hard to still practice law,” he added with a laugh. “Sometimes it is, but she’s handling it really well.”

[From E! News]

What was that? “There were all the jokes and the bits and I get all that stuff…” It’s like he’s the dude version of Taylor Swift all of a sudden. Yes, there were jokes! Well-deserved jokes. Rather famously, the stinging joke Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made at the 2014 Golden Globes. But at some point, Clooney was less “America’s Most Eligible Bachelor” and more like “That Skeevy Old Dude Dating Glorified Escorts.” So yes, I’m sure that George loves Amal (or whatever). But I feel like he’s also acknowledging that marriage was the best play to make to change the conversation around his love life, and hopefully end the “jokes.”

Eh, at least he didn’t tell Amy and Tina that there was a special place in hell for them because of those jokes. Apparently, on top of the money, free gifts, and traveling, celebs want us to kiss their butts every second of the day too.

    • chick binewski says:

Truly. The thing is there weren’t really many “jokes” about Clooney’s singlehood. He was the one who put it out there when he hit ER superfame that he would never marry again.

But after his last few girlfriends it was impossible for even the most celeb-friendly rags to ignore his pattern of 16-24 months of service and out. Articles and comments online started to insinuate that it was a very obvious and fairly creepy practice for a man who presents himself as socially aware and progressive.

I did think Fey & Poehler’s joke was hilarious, and for whatever reason I get a kick out of the fact that Tina Fey forced George Clooney into marriage.

  2. sage says:

    Marriage of convenience.

  3. Dewdrop says:

Oh – From the headline, I seriously thought he was addressing the gay rumors. My bad!

  4. Don't kill me I'm French says:

The marriage is fun?! A party is fun but a marriage…?!

Poor baby who can’t stand the jokes on his bachelor life or the bad reviews( See SonyLeak)

  5. Kiddo says:

Meh. He wasn’t crying a river in that comment. It may well have been the catalyst for the coupling, but he didn’t categorize the jokes as mean spirited, etc. Aside from the Fey/Poehler joke, it was a longstanding gag about George being a perpetual bachelor with rent-a-dates.

    • mia girl says:

      Yeah. I feel the same.
Also it says he “acknowledged” the jokes. So it make me wonder if the E! Interviewer is the one who brought the subject up and asked about the jokes in the first place… and he said yeah, but whatever.

This is a far cry from Swiftland.

    • MrsB says:

Yeah, I don’t think it’s fair to compare that remark to T Swift’s continuous complaints. But then again, apparently I’m a bit of an Amalaclooney apologist lately.

    • Robin says:

And he’s STILL not with a woman his own age.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The Tina Amy joke was about being with a woman his own age. Marriage to Amal doesn’t change that.

  6. Sofia says:

I wonder if he likes the new jokes. Considering his lack of self-awareness maybe he didn’t notice them yet. *smirk*

  7. Abbott says:

    Don’t compare Booker to ThirsTay.

  8. Catelina says:

He didn’t seem THAT upset over the jokes to be honest. I mean I’m sure he didn’t love it but this doesn’t seem like a Taylor ‘special place in hell’ Swift situation

  9. Jayna says:

And inferring that all of these women had no self-worth but to be paid to be his escort. I find that very insulting and demeaning to some nice girls that he has dated over the years by lumping them all into one category.

    • Ash says:

      THANK YOU.

Some go on and on about how wonderful Amal is because she’s a lawyer and all that, while bashing his exes as if they were nothing but golddiggers.

  10. boredblond says:

If he hadn’t spent the past year enlisting pr to convince everyone, we might be convinced. It’s like one long oversold infomercial..and going beyond kimye level babble. What will it take–short of taking this scenario seriously or seeing his films-to make them go away and live the private life he used to say he wanted?-

  11. BNA FN says:

Now we know why the marriage thing seems so staged. This marriage is for show. GC wants to shut the noise about him using young women and discarding them every two years. Now he has a woman who is educated. IMO she is being used and paid handsomely with the million dollars homes and the beautiful clothes. Btw, he reported he was drinking too mch on his birthday, that must have been fun after the guests left. There is no chemestery between them. GC is trying to hard to make this marriage a thing and it’s not. They hardly hold hands spontaneously. Whenever they touch it appears cold, jmo. GC needs to take a look at Brad and Angelina and see what a real couple looks like. This is just my opinion no one needs to agree with me.

  12. A. Key says:

Sorry Georgie boy, but that joke still stands since your trophy wife is 17 years younger than you.

So yes indeed, George Clooney would rather drift off into space and die than be with a woman his own age.

    • Jayna says:

She looks like she’s in her 40s facewise, a mature face. Does that count? LOL

      • Ash says:

I agree. Amal’s face looks more mature than her age. At any rate, she’s much younger than George, so the joke stands.

  13. Miss M says:

He lived the same life style for over 20 years and now it couldnt be better. Please…
George, when are you running for Office?

I would feel bad for Amal. But then, i realize she is really smart and knows what she is doing. Go Amal!

  14. lisa says:

somehow that pink and black dress looks even worse than it did yesterday

    • Hazel says:

I was thinking the same thing–it’s a big, black X & the skirt’s front reminds me of the back of Kate midfleton’s wedding gown.

  15. Nimbolicious says:

He actually said that Amal is “getting used to” all the attention as much as is possible because it’s just so “tricky” going about her business and getting followed around? Seriously? That’s like Pepe le Peu claiming to barely”tolerate” that poor little cat he’s always chasing. Gimme a break……

  16. Nancy says:

George commenting on how “hard it is for Amal to practice law” now? I would guess that traveling all over the world, long weekend parties at Lake Como, etc. would make it very difficult.

He is preparing everyone for her to take “a much needed break” from her make- believe law career.

This couple and Wills and Kate have a LOT in common! Except Amal loves the camera even more than Kate does.

    • Jaci says:

You are absolutely right! I can’t help but notice that none of the cases that Amal is associated with have yet come to anything – Julian Assange’s appeal has just failed; the Egyptian journalists are still languishing; the Greek Marbles are still in England and Greece has more important issues to worry about, like not going bankrupt; the phillipnes woman is still under house arrest.

People are going to cotton on that this ‘successful’ human rights lawyer is associated with unsuccessful cases. So much easier to give it all up to be with your millionaire husband in the US. I expect a nice fat position at a respectable charity/ human rights organisation in the next 12 months, possibly funded by her husband.

  17. siri says:

We will probably soon hear Amal has lowered her ‘immense workload’ to be able to be with her husband. He was talking about 11 cases lately…really? Which ones? On the website of her chamber, there’s no news about her since the Fahmy case in February (where she actually wasn’t as important as she wanted us to believe). No, George, she din’t just ‘get used’ to fame, she WANTED it in the first place. And she adjusted fast. They put her 13 year old niece in a
$ 2412 Giambattista Valli dress for the launch of Tomorrowland…that’s even more product placement than usual. He should fire his PR people, since he actually proved for more than a year how most important his image is to him, and that even a wife is still just an accessory to brand Clooney.
