Natalie Portman in Dior for the Cannes Opening Night: boring, basic or beautiful?

FFN_Cannes_OpeningRC_CHP_051315_51739011

More photos from last night’s Cannes Film Festival Opening Night festivities. So many fashion girls! So little time. Let’s start with Natalie Portman in this utterly boring Dior. Natalie is going to premiere her directorial debut film at Cannes (out of competition), so perhaps she’s saving a really show-stopping look for her own premiere. Or maybe she really is THIS boring. I mean, I understand the desire to wear red. Most women can find a shade of red that works for them, and it’s a big red carpet so why not go bright? But think of how much this would have popped if the Dior was more of a burgundy? Right? Natalie’s husband Benjamin doesn’t look well either – I blame the bad haircut.

Karlie Kloss in Versace. It looked like a dress from the back, but from the front… it’s just a mess. Random belts and buckles, bandeau bikini top and one pant leg. Is this fashion-forward or just stupid?

Doutzen Kroes wore Versace as well. I love her so much, so obviously, I like this dress. It’s sexy and va-va-voom, although Doutzen could be sexy in a burlap bag.

Sienna Miller in Lanvin for the opening night. I feel like this was really safe – I mean, a Lanvin in navy and black? And she borrowed Laura Bush’s hairstylist too. It’s like she’s really trying to do a “conservative makeunder.”

Fan Bingbing in Ralph & Russo. I really like this. I know it’s very “fancy” and princessy, but I still like it.

wenn22479722

Liya Kebede in Louis Vuitton. Liya always does minidresses in Cannes. I don’t really get it. I hate this dress too. THE SLEEVES. Ugh.

Isabella Rossellini in Stella McCartney. THIS is how you do a cape. And of all the women deserving of a cape, Isabella is SO WORTHY.

    WHERE IS LUPITA???

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Fan BingBing is a fashion queen.

  3. BritaBae says:

Natalie is beautiful BUT boring, tbh.

Also has Karlie had work done already or is that just a weird picture? I wouldn’t have recognized her in that photo if she wasn’t labeled.

    • Sarah says:

Something nice – Natalie does have some nice jewelry. I like her. I just don’t think she cares about “wowing” people on the red carpet.

      • Kiddo says:

She’s very ‘staid’ in her fashion. But I think it also has to do with being very short, and the limitations there.

      • JenniferJustice says:

She has always dressed simple yet elegant. I like it. I don’t care for most of the flashy obnoxious attention-seeking stunt dresses.

      • qwerty says:

She’s boring and has lost her sparkle. Haven’t seen her in a good outfit since she got pregnant, that baby will be one hell of a fashionista cause it sucked all her style game right out of her…

She wasn’t always like that. Google natalie portman cannes 2008. AWESOME.

    • Sofia says:

I look at her and she looks old. She dresses and uses her hair like someone in her 50’s, and not very glamour 50’s.

      • qwerty says:

Yeah, she naurally has (had?) geat curly/wavy hair. No idea what happened here…

  4. Shambles says:

Somewhere in the deep southern southy south, Reese Witherspoon is folding her 26 “‘Merica” t-shirts and thinking “bitch stole my look.”

And David Bowie is thinking the very same thing about Karlie’s getup. Therefore, I love it.

  5. Kristen says:

Re: Isabella, I wouldn’t say “this is how you do a cape” when she’s slouching so.

    • OriginalTessa says:

Oh gosh, yes. Is she even wearing a bra? It looks terrible. She looks terrible, imo.

    • TX says:

+100! Her posture is awful here but I do like the dress/cape. If she stood up straight it would have looked amazing.

    • Beatrice says:

Cape dress is beautiful but not on her. Something is way off with Isabella–yes she is slouching, with a visible muffin top and the most unflattering haircut I’ve seen. What happened to her–she used to be a style icon? Still has a beautiful face, though.

    • Sarah says:

Exactly my thought. She has bad posture and is in need of better support for her girls. The cape does nothing except distract from the rest of the mess.

      • Tiny Martian says:

aw, I really hate it when people judges older women on their looks. I mean, when does it ever end? She’s 63 years old, which is old enough not to care whether “her girls” are in place or whether she needs to hide her muffin top. Personally, I totally respect her for not feeling the need to put on an underwire bra or a pair of spanx or any of the other incredibly uncomfortable devices that women half her age stuff themselves into for events such as this because they fear what others might say about their bodies. I think she’s fabulous!

      • annaloo. says:

I don’t know…I do agree with your statement that we should accept ourselves -esp women- for the way that we are made naturally.. But I think it’s also fair to point out that this dress is magnificent and deserving of good presentation: posture, flattering foundation garments and accenting hair and makeup. I’m kind of over the whole “take me as I am” position when there could be room and effort for improvement, and I know it’s not PC to say. Rossellini is a legend, of course… I just hate my legends sloppy, regardless of age or gender… Just my opinion…

      • qwerty says:

If she’s so over caring why is she on the red carpet in Cannes, all made up, prepped by a team of stylists? There’s nothing cool about putting your saggy breasts and muffin top on show, sorry.

    • littlestar says:

Oh I think she looks so beautiful and elegant! Love that cape on her.

  6. Dewdrop says:

Ha – I thought it said “conservative murderer” not “makeunder” at first. And I guess either one fits 🙂

  7. kri says:

What in the hell did Sienna Miller inject into her face?! It looks like a gel insert for shoes. Isabella R gets it, but I think that dress needed a bit more support up top. Still fab, though. I am here for Fan”s dress, cause that is some gorgeousness. I am not here for Karlie Kloss’s Star wars cocktail waitress outfit. No.

    • doofus says:

      “Star wars cocktail waitress outfit”

HA! I was thinking either “Star Trek sexpot that sleeps with Kirk” or “bad 70’s sci-fi movie prostitute”.

      • Skyblue says:

I was thinking karlie is wearing something from the Buck Rogers collection. I could so see Erin Gray rocking that in an episode where she has to go undercover as an escort in order to rescue Buck.

  8. Damn says:

Natalie is competing with Reese on who will dress more boring. Liya is the only interesting one, it’s Cannes not the Oscars, stars are suppose to dress crazy and bring drama.

  9. InvaderTak says:

    Fan Bingbing wins.

    • j.eyre says:

I can’t stop scrolling up to look at her; she looks stunning. I cannot find a thing wrong with her look.

  10. Cynthia says:

Fan Bingbing always leave me speechless with her fashion choices. Love her!

  11. Jegede says:

    Karlie Kloss is a NO!

I’m actually disappointed in her choice, I expected better from her.

Especially as going by the Cannes schedule, Kloss appears to be the prominent L’Oreal ambassador for this year.

    • Sarah says:

Is it just me or does that dress(????) look like it would be nearly impossible to go to the bathroom? Do you take it all the way off like pants? Does it detach in some way? I am a practical girl with practical needs!

    • j.eyre says:

Karlie looks like Judy Jetson slipped out from George’s watchful eye and snuck out to Cannes.

  12. jen2 says:

Portman–pretty color, but nothing special, same for Miller. Miller’s dress also does not fit her well. Isabella’s cape is lovely as is she, but BingBing for the win again (until a certain green dress wearing goddess is featured). She really does have lovely and unique clothes and she wears them well.

  13. Tracy says:

What’s up with Sienna’s skin texture? Her forehead looks like burlap.

And someone please help the treasure that is Isabella Rosselini locate a better bra!

  14. Josefa says:

I like Natalie’s dress on her. She always wears boring fashion and I actually kinda like that, as someone who also likes to dress boring.

    • Sofia says:

But couldn’t she do something with her hair?:/

    • KellyBee says:

That’s actually not true if you Google Natalie Portman style you would see that she used to wear fun interesting outfits.

      • anya says:

Before she married ballet K-fed and lied about doing the dancing for Black Swan for that ‘false idol’ she shamelessly campaigned for. It amazes how no reporter has asked her about the amount of dancing she actually did after she won the Oscar. Maybe this is the reason why she went into hiding for the past few years.

  15. Karen says:

Fan Bingbing is everything. She’s killing it on all the red carpets.

  16. ToodySezHey says:

    I heart Fan Binging
So glad she is finally getting some Western Shine.

She was so good in Lost in Beijing.

Also, Isabella can do no wrong lol.

But yeah..I still find Natalie s husband Ben Centipede so damn skeevy. What a waste.

    • anya says:

He used a woman to get him a green card when he first came to the US for ballet and dumped her quickly just like how he dumped Isabelle Bolstyn for Natalie Portman. Yep he is skeevy and an gold-digging opportunist. Natalie’s answer about marriage in that Hollywood Reporter interview recently makes me wonder if he is mean or nasty to her. She said something about her being at fault for something and how she takes responsibility for it. I dunno but he is French and he probably isn’t nice to her. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is Anti-Semitic at all. I never see him helping her with their kid. Natalie looks like a single mother whenever pics of her and her child come up. I don’t think his job is that hard compared to her. She probably has a harder job then him. Dunno why Portman raves about Paris and France when she herself is jewish and there is tons of anti-semitsim over there.

  17. perplexed says:

She’s gotten thinner (not meant in a negative or positive way — just an observation). Maybe being with a ballet dancer rubs off on you.

    • FLORC says:

Shes wearing spanx and the butt pads that come with them.
You can see the outline on the waist where it folds over and a slight seam line where the pads go. Since spanx will flatten all of you out often the pads even out proportions.
As far as weight loss. Her diet has always been fairly strict. That she gained weight during her pregnancy was mainly because she added in dairy and used supplements to curb cravings for other foods.

      • perplexed says:

I just thought she looked thinner now than before she had a kid (or as thin as when she was in Black Swan), but if she’s wearing Spanx, that makes sense too. It could be the dress, but sometimes she’s looked a bit broader (not broad as in broad as a regular person, but broader than she looks here).

  18. mia girl says:

What in the Barbarella-Buck Rogers hell are Karli Kloss and Liya Kebede wearing??!!

  19. Lucy2 says:

Fan’s is unique and pretty. Natalie’s isn’t exciting but it still looks good.
Karlie’s is awful! Looks like a costume from a bad 80s movie.
    Isabella in a cape- yes.

  20. Carmen says:

Love Portman’s, Fan’s and Rosselini’s dresses. Everyone else was meh to awful.

  21. Seraphina says:

Fan’s dress is amazing love it. She wears it well. Can’t agree with Iasabella’s choice two thumbs down. The cape from the back looks like a mess. Almost like an art show piece

  22. savu says:

I want Isabella Rossellini to just follow me around and narrate my life. I could listen to her talk for hours.

  23. EN says:

One can never go wrong with a simple red dress (or black dress) on a beautiful woman.

  24. Mireille says:

The problem with Natalie’s dress is that it is red. It mixes in nicely with the red carpet — there is no contrast. She should have picked a different color.

  25. M.A.F. says:

All I could think of when I saw Kloss’ dress/thing was “how does she pee in that? Push the material to the side? or unbuckle?” If that questions comes to mind, then one shouldn’t wear the outfit.

  26. Greek chic says:

I like sienna miller but this dress and hair are too conservative.

Liya has great legs but this dress is a disaster.
Fan Bingbing looks elegant but I am not a fan of the dress, I don’t like the pink and green combo.
    Doutzen wins!

  27. Ms. Lib says:

Red is never boring but that dress sure is basic! Liya Kebede is crowned Little Miss Space Cadette. She needs a new stylist.

  28. Kiddo says:

Karlie Kloss looks like she is in a 60’s B Sci-fi costume, in how they imagined people would be dressed in the future.

  29. FingerBinger says:

Stella McCartney designs are awful. Full stop. Natalie is pretty. Her dress is very basic. I don’t understand why Liya Kebede decided to wear aluminum foil.

  30. boredblond says:

I think sienna’s gone more traditional because she’s a judge at Cannes..trying to clean up her act? The mini..anytime there is more fabric in your sleeve than your skirt, something’s wrong. Isabella made me think of Julianne Moore–both classy beautiful women who really need some underwire support.

  31. Maggi says:

Ugh. How is that pepto bismol dress getting raves?? Is it because she’s Chinese and therefore ‘exotic’? Or do people just like saying her name? Fan Bing Bing epitomizes tacky and nouveau riche Chinese tastes. She has a generic plastic surgery face and all her gowns are gaudy ass princess gowns. I will admit however that I liked the Met Gala dress when I saw the gold dress underneath.

Sammy Cheng, a Hong Kong actress, dresses so much more tastefully and elegantly AND with an edge. This Fan BB lady is so saccharine she makes me want to vomit.

    • klein says:

I take it you don’t like her then?

I don’t think people are actually being blinkered into thinking she looks great because she is – as you put it – ‘exotic’ but more because they genuinely like her look. There’s room for all sorts of taste in this world and although you might not like her fashion choices, other people might – I think it’s more personal preferences than anything else…

      • Sofia says:

I absolutely loved what she wore here and at the Met Gala and I have no idea of who she is. It’s not about being exotic, it’s about making interesting and fresh choices.

  32. Alexa says:

Yes – Fan and her dress are BEAUTIFUL! I also happen to LOVE Karlie’s outfit – It’s HOT! And I love the cape portion of Isabella’s outfit – so dramatic and appropriate for such an event.

  33. maddie says:

I’m surprised she’s still with her husband. No particular reason, just a vibe that it wouldn’t last.

    • Birdix says:

He’s underestimated on this board. He’s leading Paris Opera Ballet, still has a company in Los Angeles that is now touring Europe, and is involved with so many cool projects in Paris and in LA. He may not look like much, but he’s a really interesting, creative, forward-thinking guy.

      • anya says:

He was never famous until he got with Natalie. Being with an A lister has helped his career. Lets be realistic, ballet dancers are not famous in the same way Hollywood stars are and Natalie’s connections helped him be the face of YSL for Men and it probably had a hand in him becoming the director of Paris Opera. He is not attractive at all and looks very slimy and stalkerish. If I am mistaken, he was stalking Natalie on the set of Black Swan and was dating her behind his then-girlfriend’s backs. He even kicked out his live-in girlfriend unexpectedly cause he knew Natalie would help his career. If Natalie knew he had a girlfriend but still went with it, then shame on her.
People dislike him because of how he quickly dumped his longtime girlfriend and latched onto a famous beautiful movie star the minute he saw her. They don’t call him ballet K-fed for a reason. Natalie’s career is now getting back on track and I assume he will dump her when she makes even more money and he will run off with a 20 something year old ballerina. I never see him helping her with their kid at all.

  34. magz says:

Does Liya Kebede still have the Tag on her minidress? I’d want to return that too asap.

  35. belle de jour says:

I can’t help thinking Natalie Portman’s dress makes her look like a folded napkin at a formal restaurant’s holiday table.

    • Jayna says:

So true. It’s just ugh and boring on her.

Fan’s gown is simply amazing on her.

Sienna’s gown is stunning. The color is amazing. It’s just not her usual style. It still looks nice, but I would love it more on someone taller.

      • belle de jour says:

I was pretty surprised at Sienna’s choice as well, considering her usual – and definitely agree about the longer lines. You know, it’s almost as if the work she’s gotten done makes her head/face/features look… larger? more disproportionate? Or perhaps when combined with that hair…

  36. LAK says:

That is the most boring dress i’ve ever seen. Being DIOR doesn’t redeem it at all.
