Uzo Aduba: OITNB won’t be the ‘example for how women don’t work together”

Taylor Schilling

The ladies of OITNB grace the new issue of Rolling Stone to promote the show’s third season. Naturally, Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon (who’s returning as a regular) take the cover to push the Piper-Alex chemistry. You can see the full photoshoot (with many other cast members) here. I’m looking forward to the new season even though there’s so much other television languishing in my Netflix queue. This is a good first world problem to experience. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Laura Prepon on auditioning for Piper: “It’s funny; when you look at both characters, I definitely identify more with Alex. When I talked to Jenji [Kohan] later, she told me, ‘You know, with Piper you’re worried she’s gonna get her a** kicked in prison. When I look at you, I’m not scared about you getting your a** kicked.’ Not to say that Taylor would get her a** kicked, ’cause I think she’d do okay. But Alex is Maleficent-like, sexy, sassy — she can definitely looks like can take care of herself. She’s not getting her a** kicked.”

Prepon on hanging with the ladies: “I get along with everybody. But I play poker, I watch UFC, I have a motorcycle — I tend to do things that guys like to do. Though recently I’ve acquired this awesome, really small group of women outside of the show, who are all rad. I’ve learned it’s important to have amazing women in your life.”

Uzo on the cast’s no a*** policy: “We are not going to be the example for how women don’t work together.”

Uzo on the “great responsibility” of playing Crazy Eyes: “In terms of mental health? Absolutely. Because here’s the thing: It’s such a closed-door subject, a closeted subject. People aren’t walking around and saying, ‘I suffer from mental illness,’ or ‘I have depression,” or “I’m f***ed up.’ We kind of bury it, cover it up, guard it with our life. Yeah, I feel a huge responsibility to just take care of her and the people who can relate to her. ‘Cause it’s not easy.”

Laverne Cox on the series’ legacy: “We’ve revolutionized television. The unprecedented diversity that we just saw in pilot season I think would not be possible if it weren’t for us.”

[From Rolling Stone]

I love that the cast is mostly women, and they truly enjoy each other’s company. One look at their social media accounts (here’s a handy collection) reveals how they’re all cool with each other. No catty stereotypes to be found, and Uzo says that showrunner Jenji Kohan purposely laid that rule out before filming ever began. The no-drama expectations were clear. Good plan.

The cast also covers the July issue of Essence, which has released the tiniest of excerpts about body image and acceptance. These women all look stunning.

Beautiful ladies. Excited to watch season 3.

    • Mia V. says:

They really make the show, all the characters are fun and deep, you cheer for them, you hate, it’s an amazing show.

  2. MelissaManifesto says:

Gorgeous women but I am not a fan of the covers. Since I don’t want to start a fight I won’t say why.

One a lighter note, I love how they are in orange for the Essence cover.

    • Prettykrazee says:

You don’t have to say, but we all know why. I thought the exact same thing when I received my Rolling Stone magazine in the mail a couple days ago. I dismissed it because I don’t watch the show and don’t know the characters or their dynamics. And seeing the Essence cover has brought those same thoughts back.

    • Mia V. says:

After all, orange is the new black :))))

    • Babalon says:

      +1

    • I Choose Me says:

I’m going to jump in and say what I’m thinking. I think all the women look gorgeous. I’m a big fan of Uzo and Cox in particular but why are all the lighter skin women in front on the Essence cover and the darker skinned, bigger women in back? Was it a deliberate choice or it just worked out that way? Am I reaching? Somebody help me out here.

I’m not even going to bother to address the RS cover at all.

      • Mixtape says:

Not reaching at all, I Choose Me, although I saw it first as the slimmer women being put in front to hide the girls in back and thought it kind of contradicted the cover message. And as for the RS cover… UGH because, yeah, that’s what this show is about.

      • Marianne says:

If Uzo was in front, I would argue its just because they’re the more well known cast members.

  3. lucy2 says:

I can’t wait for the new episodes! Such a great show. I love the Essence cover, they all look gorgeous.
I follow Uzo on FB, she’s awesome.

  4. Greek chic says:

I haven’t watched the show, is it good?
These women sound and look interesting so I am planning to watch it.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I love it and adore it. I am telling myself not to binge on season 3 like I did on the first two, because then I am sad when it’s over too quickly.

As for whether you would like it, try it! I hope you will like it. I don’t know you of course, so I’ll just caution you the way I did my mom. There’s a lot of sex, most of it between women, and nudity etc. So if those are things that bother you, you might have a hard time watching it (doesn’t bother me a bit ha ha). Even so there is just so much character development and revelation, with all of these stories of these women both in and out of prison, that I think it’s one of the finest shows ever written.

      • Greek chic says:

Τhanks! There are so many shows, its difficult to watch everything.
I don’t have a problem, I like sex and nudity lol

      • qwerty says:

Is sex in films/series really something that grown up people need to be warned about?

    • Lucy2 says:

It is SO good. It’s funny and dramatic and also heartfelt, and all of the characters are interesting, wonderfully written, and well acted.

    • *North*Star* says:

      It’s awesome!

(But you don’t have to have lesbian sex, okay?)

That’s a quote from the show, it’ll make more sense once you’ve seen it! Lol

  5. jugstorecowboy says:

Commenting because I love these people and always want more. And hate others who shall remain nameless but get posted on 80 billion times a day.

I hate to complain about the Essence cover because Black Cindy! Poussey!, but why are the “skinnies” all in the front?

    • Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Great comment! The relative skinnies and relative lighties are in the front.

    • I Choose Me says:

Wish I had scrolled down before posting my comment. MTE!

    • Lucy2 says:

I was so excited to see so many of my favorite characters, I didn’t notice that. But you’re right, and it’s sad.
Plus I wish Rolling Stone would have featured more of the cast on their cover.

  6. Mona says:

American society is still so segregated, at least going by the covers and the audience for these magazines.

  7. msw says:

I can’t wait for the new season! One more week! I am excited about Prepon being back and a bit more story line for her, Uzo and Laverne Cox. Don’t care about Piper, ha.

I’ve had a few jobs where I’ve worked with all women, where everyone got along great, and there was no drama. In fact, the only place I’ve ever worked with “drama” was a place where I was the only female and all my coworkers were male. I don’t think men and women are all that different when it comes to drama and diva stuff, but confirmation bias is a powerful force.

  8. wow says:

Never watched an episode of this show ever, but I am so happy to read that they get a long and make it a point to not be catty and petty towards each other. Wonderful!

  9. QQ says:

    That
    Essence
    Cover
    Gave
    Me
    A

    Life
    COINS!
    YAAASSSSSSSSS

    GET IT GIRLS

( also a HEARTY side eye for Rolling Stones Mag for Having the blandest most Unlikeables in their covers and a Tiny ass black square for B.B. Effing King Passing… In a Rock And Roll/music Mag that basically Owes Legacy Here FFS)

    • jugstorecowboy says:

I do find it ironic that those two are the most boring, useless characters on that show. Maybe it’s their bosoms? Vomit!

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, agree re BB King. Corporate sell out – advertising $ for cover features so the true stories are side notes.

  10. Amy Tennant says:

I already have a huge crush on Ruby Rose.

    • qwerty says:

Eh. Her character will probably be cool but RR herself does nothing for me. I’ve read some interviews, saw some pics of her and the overall impression I get it’s that she’s just so…enamoured with herself.

  11. Delta Juliet says:

OK, confession time. I am a hetero chick. But I have the MAJOR hots for Samira Wiley. I’m sure most of it is a residual crush from her character Poussey Washington, but seriously. Something about her is damn hot!

    • jugstorecowboy says:

I’m so with you! When I watched the Poussey backstory episode realized that I would probably leave my husband for that woman.

      MORE POUSSEY!

      • Delta Juliet says:

        Oh hell yeah. Me too!!!!!!

      • Dee Kay says:

Loved the Poussey story in S2. I really felt for her storyline with the German girl and her unrequited love for Taystee. I think it’s interesting that as we’ve seen more characters’ backstories, we’ve seen that quite a few come from pretty privileged backgrounds (Poussey, Crazy Eyes, and Piper). It’s not like Piper is the only one in there that grew up with that kind of privilege. I love how every character on the show is so unique and is defined by one or two stereotypes.

      • Danskins says:

        Me three – love Poussey!

    • qwerty says:

Truth time: you’re not as hetero as you think 😉

  12. Alexis says:

Love the essence cover! Everyone looks gorgeous.

  13. Maya says:

So glad to see that this show is still going strong. I loved the first season, but didn’t make it through season two. Most of the characters are fantastic, but Piper started really annoying me and I couldn’t seem to get past it. Love what the show has done in terms of having such a diverse cast of strong women characters and tackling some pretty serious issues that tend to get avoided.

  14. Corey says:

So Laura wants to play the lead character, but she’s not right for it
    Well played Jenji

  15. Anne says:

Never seen OITNB, but that quote about women working together screams “The Good Wife” to me. Sad.
