E! got some exclusive, enthusiastic quotes from Colin Farrell, 39, about the recent historical public vote in Ireland legalizing same sex marriage throughout the country. Colin’s older brother, Eamon, is gay and married his partner in Canada in 2009. Colin has been openly supportive of his brother and has penned open letters supporting gay rights and same sex marriage. Colin is thrilled that his brother’s marriage will be legally recognized in their country. He also had some truth for the Catholic Church for taking such a negative stance on the ruling. E! talked to Farrell at the Maui Film Festival, where he was given the Navigator Award. This award “honors a film artist for carving a path of distinction through the turbulent waters of the entertainment industry without sacrificing their fundamental commitment to excellence.”

How happy he is to see a vote for same sex marriage in Ireland
Thrilled… it was a huge day in the history of our country and I think it [passed] by a healthy enough margin that it [proved] that we have become a really changed people in our outlook and… acceptance… eventually in the world, ideally, I don’t know if we’ll ever get to this day it’s such a messed up world and planet and race that we are inhabiting it, but eventually there’ll be no talk of gay or straight or any of that. I’m not into taunting the other side either… I don’t think that benefit s anyone… It was really funny because one of the arguments when the vote went through was that the church came out and said, ‘You know, this was a dark day for Ireland,’ and all you could see was literally rainbows everywhere, posters of rainbows, T-shirts of rainbows, men and women hugging, men and men hugging, women and women hugging, and yet cut to, ‘This is a dark day in the history of [Ireland], A dark day in the history of a country is internal civil conflict and war and bloodshed and maybe sexual abuse…It was a great day.
I loved how Farrell went into some parenthetical statements about the nature of humanity. This was such a great interview to watch. E! also asked Colin if his brother was going to get married again in celebration of the new law and he said “I think it’s time he’ll enjoy a home grown celebration.”
Kaiser, who was gracious enough to send me this story (I let her have Matt Damon so we’re probably even), reminded me that True Detective is returning to HBO on June 21. Farrell of course stars as a detective and tells E! that we can expect change and new characters in this second season, but that there will be a similar “tone and sensibility” in this standalone season. He also did a long interview with Variety in which he discussed the ups and downs of his career and waxed philosophical a little. It’s well worth reading, whether or not you’re a fan. If I wasn’t before, I definitely am now.

Awesome. I am so happy for Ireland, and I hope that eventually everyone will follow their example. Colin looks fab in those pics-very Old H’wood. But dammit..I just won’t with the flip flops. Nope.

He’s right to call out the church for their sore loser statements. The YES campaign was hugely respectful and focused only on positive arguments, no negativity or criticising the other side at all. Mucho kudos to them for doing it that way, with no dirty tricks, and winning by such a huge margin. Go Ireland!

I love Colin and the man he’s matured into. His career took a real slide I didn’t expect, but he’s been building back a strong body of work.

His reaction to the “dark side” comments is SPOT-ON.
Those who find something wrong or sinister with joyous celebrations of love are the ones with a problem. And it’s especially insulting in a country with such a violent history. Ireland has survived devastating famine, civil war, etc… yet LOVE is considered a threat?!
Just when I didn’t think that I could love him more – BOOM. I loved scruffy, living-on-the-edge, young Colin (so dirty and hot!), but I ADORE responsible, sensitive and sober Colin even more. I adore the fact that he’s devoted to his family, and uses his celebrity to draw attention to causes near and dear to his heart (The Special Olympics, Angelman’s Syndrome, marriage equality).
He’s the whole package, inside and out.

I always rooted for Colin. He has his alcohol and drug issues and his personal life was…interesting, but he always was pleasant and there were never stories of mistreatment or unprofessinalism. Happy to see his career on track. In Bruges in on Netflix. Might have to watch it again as he was fantastic.
