Katy Perry covers Forbes to inspire women: ‘There is no shame in being a boss’

Katy Perry

Katy Perry covers the newest issue of Forbes to highlight her status as the highest earning musician on the Celebrity 100 list. Over the past year, Katy earned $135 million. This includes cosmetic and fashion endorsements plus 124 concerts in 27 countries, which yieled her about $2 million gross per show. (This is how she can afford to purchase a convent in cash.) About 60% of her earnings come from abroad.

For a pop star who sings in clichés, Katy is doing well. She’s laughing at everyone who calls her a dimwit. Katy revealed her Forbes cover and said people warned her against it:

“Before accepting the offer to be on the cover of Forbes, I was told that a lot of women have previously shied away from doing it. I wondered if it was because they thought socially it would look like they were flaunting or bragging or it wasn’t a humble decision. Ladies, there is a difference between being humble and working hard to see the fruits of your labor blossom, and your dreams realized. Hopefully this cover can be an inspiration to women out there that it’s okay to be proud of hard earned success and that there is no shame in being a boss. Also … don’t think that I didn’t celebrate this moment by going straight to Taco Bell and getting my crunch wrap supreme”

Is it true that many women have turned down doing Forbes covers? Sadly, I believe it. MTV calls this cover “a feminist statement,” which is interesting because Katy’s unusual definition of feminism doesn’t jibe. Still, congrats to Katy. She’s spoken before about her “empire,” and I’ve always suspected she’s much smarter than she appears (cultural appropriation aside).

Well said – women should be proud of their achievements and not hide in the shadows.

  2. sofia says:

Props to her. But I’m still annoyed by the strategies used by these really successful women (Her, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift…). Apart from the business side of it I don’t see them as role models or inspiring at all. But maybe that’s just me.

    • Kiki says:

Taylor Swift can sing about “Bad Blood “, Katy Perry gets the last laugh and straight to the bank. Best revenge served hot. Props Katy.

      • Tiffany says:

I got around to that god awful Bad Blood video and I realized something. There is a similarly between that and Perry’s TGIF video. Star studded story video.

Also, kudos to Katy for not giving Swift more ammunition because Swifty has to be seething that has not occurred. I never would have banked Perry taken the high road on that one.

      • Veronica says:

Honestly…how angry can Katy really be about this from a professional standpoint? They both got tons of press for it.

  3. Jag says:

I agree that she should be proud of what she has done.

She shouldn’t buy the convent since the nuns don’t want her to, though.

That puppy is adorable.. does anyone know the breed.. Such a gorgeous color.

regarding the Forbes Cover.. I think a lot of people in general turn it down because the quotes of their income is often WRONG.. I recall Gisele saying she got audited because of what Forbes said she made..which in reality was a lot less.

Congrats to Katy for this honor..

Cavalier king charles spaniel crossed with poodle. A cavapoo they are called.

  5. Debbie says:

She’s not wrong its a good message. Surprised to hear women shy away from doing the magazine.

  6. Lucy2 says:

This Katy Perry moment brought to you by Taco Bell, apparently.

  7. Div says:

I can’t stand Katy but she’s 100% on point with her comment.

  8. Prairiegirl says:

Let’s see.. She has dreams, follows them, makes them happen. Is in charge of her vision, makes her own money, keeps it and spends it as she will. Owns her own property and seeks to own more. Yup. That’s feminism all right.

  9. Loopy says:

On a superficial note , I saw her pic without make up OMG

  10. Kiddo says:

Somehow Forbes managed to make her cover look like a parody of a 1950s ad. I fully expect to see suds somewhere from her happy cleaning venture. Maybe that’s why other women turn it down? Are they not giving the same level of seriousness to women as opposed to male CEOs, and the like, etc? I’m not a reader of Forbes magazine, so maybe I’m full of shit. No shame in being proud of your business acumen, especially if it involves treating staff well.

    • Alarive says:

I actually find it kind of refreshing. She’s still rich and a boss, fun cover or not. It’s the Nicki Minaj principle — just because you’re a business woman and have power, doesn’t mean you have to renounce your fun feminine energy. I love that she kept her nose piercing as well.

  11. COSquared says:

This is where I can’t hate on her, Bey etc… No matter how cheesy/overrated/terrible their music is, they’re smart enough to be businesswomen and cut deals. #CANTSHADE. They are more than their music and outfits.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Call me cynical, but I can never really bring myself to believe all the hype around performer’s alleged business instincts. Half these people never even finished high school the old fashioned way, and I can’t think of any pop people off the top of my head that went to college. I believe their real gift is in that politician’s instinct to desire to please people and know exactly what they want and how to give it to them. If you can’t string two sentences together, if you can’t come up with a way to sell a record without throwing other artists under the bus for attention because you’re the victim, the truth is, you’re just not that smart.

      • Naddie says:

There are so many people behind them, and those ones are really the boss. To me, so many artists are more like puppets. If you’re cynical, I am as well.

      • Kiki says:

I happen to agree with both people. These celebrities are not really intelligent and they have people behind them making them useful for the public to believe they are the real deal. That is why most of them, if not all are the most arrogant, egotistical celebrities they are out there. But what is so depressing the brag, gloat and rub their wealth in our faces to show the rest of the public , their lives are so much better and you are not with our 8hr shift jobs. I just want to say is this our normal living public, we should not be obsessed with their fame and fortune, and be grateful with every little thing we have, because these celebrities would trade with us anyday. We have better lives than they do. So be happy people.

      • Mixtape says:

I disagree a bit. There are so many young women aiming to be pop stars, all of them talented and attractive–I think the difference between those who make it and those who don’t is the ability to win at the business side. And you have to win a little on your own before you have the money or clout to put together a team to help you the rest of the way.

  12. lili says:

I always thought it’s so weird that Katy is not signed to a 360 deal with her label, which would have given label the opportunity to take the biggest slice from every penny the artist earned.

  13. Snowflake says:

So shooting whipped creAm out your Breasts does pay off! Sorry, I can’t stand this woman.
