2015 MTV VMAs Open Post: Hosted by The Weeknd’s inability to feel his face

wenn22631174

Here is your Open Post for the 2015 VMAs. The VMAs air tonight at 9 pm on MTV, obviously. The show is being held this year in LA and Miley Cyrus is hosting. We’ll have extensive coverage tomorrow, of course. Taylor Swift will be there. Nicki Minaj will be there. Kanye West is getting the Vanguard Award. Basically, the show’s producers want everything to be scandalous and crazy. Let’s see if they deliver. We’re also live-tweeting the show once it starts – go here for my Twitter, go here for Celebitchy’s Twitter, and go here for Bedhead’s Twitter.

The host of our Open Post this evening is The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye. The Weeknd has been one of the breakout stars of the past year, although he has been around, recording music for several years now. His second album, Beauty Behind the Madness, just dropped on iTunes and he’s already got several monster hits from it, including “Earned It” (which was also featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack), “Often,” “The Hills” (which is my favorite) and “Can’t Feel My Face,” which is the song he’ll be performing tonight on the VMAs. This is his first VMA appearance and performance, I believe. I’m genuinely excited to see it. In addition to The Weeknd, you can expect performances by Minaj, Pharrell, Demi Lovato (all of her songs pluck my last nerve), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky (UGH) and of course, Justin Bieber, who just dropped a new single.

Some are wondering if The Weeknd will come to the VMAs with his young girlfriend, Bella Hadid (he’s 25, she’s 18). Bella showed up in his recent New York Times profile, although when asked if he loved her, he was all “I don’t know, to be honest with you. I don’t think so. Maybe. It’s no, it’s yes, it’s maybe.”

Meh…I would have to be crazy to watch the VMAs. It’ll be less about the music/videos and more about who is “in” and who is “out” and the drama that’ll go with it . People will fall over themselves to see who can outdo each other. Too tiring for me to watch. Save the drama for your momma, I say. Yes, I am a curmudgeon about the whole thing. At least I’m honest.

    • Emily C. says:

      +1

I’ll look at the gossip and talk about it (partly because I’m procrastinating hugely on a project) but I had no interest in actually watching the thing. And it all went exactly as everyone thought it would. Even Kanye announcing his presidency bid is hardly unexpected, considering Kanye. The only surprise was Rebel Wilson’s yucky unfunny bit on stripper cops, and that’s not the kind of surprise that would be fun to watch.

I’ve never been into this kind of thing, even when I was the target demographic and liked some of the music. But still… it seems to be getting more blah every year. It’s like the TV equivalent of clickbait.

  2. Sonya says:

    I. Can’t. Wait.
This is the first year I am feeling like that in eons. lol I admit, it’s because I expect a bit of f*ckery. I figure either Miley will be awesome and it will be epic of she will be awful and it will be epic. I can’t see it as being in between. lol

    • bettyrose says:

Not watching but her non-dress is sort of epic. In an everyone from Cher to Madge to JLo did it before you sort of way. Can’t wait to find out which major global issue she’ll raise awareness for now that she has our attention.

    • Franca says:

I like Miley. And half of the people there are almost naked, her dress is at least interesting.

I like what Amber Rose wearing.

    • Franca says:

  3. Lucy says:

I’m not as excited this year about the show as I used to be in the past, but I’m sure Abel will kill it. He’s insanely talented.

  4. Abbott says:

So Taylor and her girl squad already showed up on the carpet and the pre-show hasn’t even started. I’m guessing she is going to help either Miley or Nicki open the show. Sigh. She really can’t help herself, can she?

    • InvaderTak says:

Yikes. I can’t watch. Who all is in the squad this time?

      • Abbott says:

Selena, Hailee Steinfeld, Mariska Hargitay, and (I counted) 6 models.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        Mariska looks so embarrassed lol.

The black girl is Serayah, she’s not a model but an actress. She’s on Empire.

      • bettyrose says:

Of the gaggle, Hailey FTW. I’d go with a darker color but I love the eccentric artsy vibe, which stands out in a sea of naked.

    • Bridget says:

it’s like they walked over to the VMA carpet straight from their high school cafeteria table.

    • Katydid20 says:

I just can’t. It’s like she paid a bunch of people to be her friends. I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how those girls can follow her around and pretend like everything she does or says is pure gold.

      • bettyrose says:

I really don’t get Mariska Hargitay. Is she their den mother or something?

      • Katydid20 says:

Lol. But I honestly can’t understand how she thought it wouldn’t look weird if she tagged along with that group.

  5. rudy says:

Never heard of him until two days ago when my teenage girl ask to get a ticket to his concert – over $100. Now she is learning all his songs, singing them constantly, playing all of them of me while I force myself to relax and be happy with whatever quality time I get.

His lyrics are what I would call – NSFW. He sounds like a mix of Michael Jackson and Prince. The music is ok. My favorite song says school is for losers. meh.

    • Franca says:

The few songs I heard of him are full of terrible terrible misogyny. Why do we make stars of people like that?

  6. Bridget says:

There’s something about the level of try-hard with the VMAs nowadays that turns me off. It used to be fun with some genuinely spontaneously moments (Diana Ross feeling up Lil Kim anyone?), but now it’s just people trying their very hardest to be scandalous or ‘cool’.

And am I the only one who can’t imagine watching Miley for 2 hours, even just as host?

    God I’ve gotten old.

  7. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Surely this event only exists to be ridiculed?

    • Bridget says:

It feels weird for MTV to have a music video awards show when they don’t even show them anymore. What’s even the point?

    • Ruckhappy says:

Given that the winners are notified ahead of time that they’re going to win? Yes.

  8. AlmondJoy says:

Waiting patiently for the disasters that are no doubt on the way.

So far everybody on the red carpet looks awful. Kim K has on a cargo dress with huge pockets 😣

    • InvaderTak says:

Wow just found a slide show at HuffPo and good lord is everyone looks awful. Cara D actually looked the best IMO. Miley and Chrissy T got an “oh eff off” with their BS outfits. I wish Britbrit could retire and stay at home in her PJ’s with her boys. She’s just pitiful these days and it’s not her fault. Swift looks like a try hard mess and the makeup is awful. go home. Even Little miss free spirit Twigs is on the skin trend. Oy.

      What happened to Bieber???

      • AlmondJoy says:

I feel the same about Brit.. My heart goes out to her and I always feel as if someone is forcing her to show up at these events and telling her to smile and look pretty.

        Beiber’s hair looks terrible.

        I’m over Swifty 😩

      • bettyrose says:

IKR! I can laugh at a lot of them, but with Brit my first reaction was sadness. Yes, she has a fabulous bod, but her sex kitten days are long behind her. She looks stuffed into that dress and very uncomfortable. The person pulling her puppet strings needs to be smacked.

      • someone says:

Agreed Brit’s body looks great but she makes me nervous when she talks, like she’s a half beat off.

  9. Katydid20 says:

Really Nicki? I’m a bit disappointed (eye roll at Taylor right now).

  10. kri says:

Yeah. Swifty and Minaj. A bunch of us called it. But really…who didn’t see that coming.

    • Abbott says:

I guess the question now is how many other performances she’s going to insert herself in.

      • Bridget says:

On the bright side, at least you won’t have to hear Bad Blood again tonight?

Swift and Minaj are both incredibly social media savvy, and both know the value in a good feud. Nicki ended up getting more mileage out of her snub than if she’d been the biggest nominated act of the year, and now Taylor gets to at least act like she has a sense of humor about herself.

  11. Jess says:

It’s getting to the point where I’d rather see/hear things about the kardashians than Taylor swift. She couldn’t even sing live for just the chorus of her own song.

  12. kri says:

Miley is dressed in Muppet gonads.

  13. iheartjacksparrow says:

Wow, Miley is actually wearing clothes.

  14. kri says:

Abel is stunning. His is one of the only performances I want to see.

    • Sarah says:

How much did they have to pay Jared Leto to get him to appear here? I thought he would be way above this. He looked annoyed and embarrassed, not that I blame him…

  15. Otaku Fairy says:

Britney looked good. I love her dress and hairstyle.

  16. Nev says:

Taylor is so far up her own ass. Can’t deal.
    Nicki was awful. Ugh.

  17. Skins says:

Here Nicki, take your award, now go away

    • someone says:

Nicki was rude to Miley and she totally was making fun of Taylor the way she used that voice and said she’d like to thank her fans.

      Nicki has NO CLASS.

      • AlmondJoy says:

If you’ve ever seen Nicki accept an award then you would know that she always uses that voice and goes back and forth between her “sweet” voice and her “hood” voice. She does this every time.

      • Colette says:

So I guess she was making fun of Taylor at the BET awards since she did the same thing.

      • Neah23 says:

If you want to talk about people with no class then I suggest you look at Miley.

      • someone says:

Point taken. Thought her whole “thanking the fans and follow your dreams” thing was mocking Taylor but I was wrong if she does that all the time in her speeches. And Miley and class clearly aren’t compatible!!

      • Genny says:

Miley was rude in the interview, Nicki was rude on stage, and then Miley was tone deaf AND rude. So I don’t see how this is at all a one-way street?

And Nicki is always like that with her fans. Her acceptance speech had nothing to do with mocking Taylor.

  18. Otaku Fairy says:

Nicki looks gorgeous in my opinion.

  19. SW says:

    Nicki was a little tantrumy

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I couldn’t tell if that thing between Nicki and Miley was 100% staged for the show or if they partially meant it. But clearly, Miley is still missing the point if she’s making it about ‘getting over’ losing an award.

  20. yeahiknow says:

Chrissy Tiegen looks pregnant. Like, really pregnant. Are they making an announcement soon?

  21. Nik says:

I creamed my jeans when the weekend performed

  22. Otaku Fairy says:

I liked the weekend’s performance and even though I didn’t like Demi’s singing (she can do better), I liked the performance itself. Also liking Miley’s crazy wardrobe changes.

  23. someone says:

Is Justin Beiber really singing or lip synching?

  24. AlmondJoy says:

Hmmm I didn’t find Rebel Wilson funny at all.. Taking a crack at #blacklivesmatter and making fun of police brutality.

Can’t stand Nicki or Miley.. They’re both so extra. Either way Miley is still missing the point Nicki was trying to make.

Demi looked gorgeous. Hated the performance.

    • Danskins says:

Still can’t believe Rebel Wilson even thought her little “skit” would be even remotely funny, especially before presenting the best hip hop video award. It wasn’t clever at all and was deeply disrespectful. She’s so gross. 😣😣

      • InvaderTak says:

For those of us without video, care to elaborate? I catch watch gets posted to twitter but haven’t seen that one.

        Edit: Hollywood reporter has one.

    • Neah23 says:

MI don’t know if Rebel wrote the joke herself or if it was VH1 writers ether way it was in poor taste and she went with it. This is way I stop watching VH1 and MTV awards shows along time ago.

    • Kath says:

Agreed. I’ve never found Rebel Wilson funny. On behalf of Australia, I apologise for inflicting her on you.

  25. WinnieCoopersMom says:

Looks like the Biebs got the number of Trump’s hairdresser..and still doing all the exact same dance moves from when he first came on the scene (5-6 yrs ago?)..yawnnnn

  26. Jayna says:

Taylor has now become overexposed. I’m sick of her.

  27. Bess says:

I know this has nothing to do with the VMAs but I just read that Wes Craven died. I had no idea that he had brain cancer. He always seemed like such a lovely person. RIP.

  28. InvaderTak says:

    Wes Craven died!! No!

  29. I never comment but.... says:

Honestly they can just end the awards right now because nothing will beat Kanye basking in his own glory. Lmao. I hope someday, I too can be my own hero.

  30. Carolina says:

Can you imagine Kim Kardashian as the first lady of the United States?

    • InvaderTak says:

How high was he? And I don’t think he qualifies as a Millennial does he?

      • I never comment but.... says:

He qualifies as a millennial because his greatness can’t be contained within the confines of a number that society created to restrain his power or something along those lines. Lol Honestly he says some good things but they are wrapped in a blanket of ego and thus the delivery falls flat.

      • Neah23 says:

But does he say good things or he just trowing out words he got from a book. Kanye can never but together a coherent thought or back up what he says.

  31. Nev says:

    Kanye. Incredible. Made my night.

  32. WinnieCoopersMom says:

Was Kanye’s diatribe just fodder for the SNL season opener in a couple of weeks? Did they pay him to sound like that or is that him being his true self? I mean half of it was like a long-winded apology to Swift…from an incident of 6 years ago. Just awkward/cringe-worthy.

  33. iheartjacksparrow says:

The censors didn’t see a bare Miley breast?

  34. American In Oz says:

He definitely sounded high. He could barely string together two thoughts. He should have just gotten up there and said “I’m only kind of sorry about 2009 and I’m running for president. Peace out bro”.

  35. Marty says:

I can’t believe Miley just used the word “Mammy” to introduce a black man on stage.

For all y’all that still f**k with her, good luck.

    • InvaderTak says:

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. She and Rebel Wilson can Eff right off.

    • Genny says:

      This explains why I don’t.

And her dreads? Please, Miley. Have a seat. Have several. I know even have to say anything because she showed how tone deaf she really is the entire night. Her whole hosting was just gross.

    • me says:

She was talking about the old lady in the skit…that was her real life grandma and she calls her “mammy”.

  36. bobafelty says:

Deep Thoughts, brought to you by Miley’s bewbs.

  37. InvaderTak says:

Well, tomorrow is going to be full of commentary. I hate the VMA’s. Or at least wish they could go back to be harmless pop controversies instead of picking the lowest of the low to make social statements.

  38. Pinetree13 says:

I can’t believe I watched this. So cringeworthy. All the attempts at humor…terrible (granted I missed the opening)

  39. TotallyBiased says:

Hey, I had to work but saw ONE gif of Kanye–was that twenty øne piløts sitting behind him?????

  40. Daria Morgendorffer says:

The Weeknd wants to be Jean Michel Basquiat so bad. He’s also a misogynist with a particular dislike of black women, so no thank you.

    • Wooley says:

Ahhh!! You are so right, I see the Jean Michel comparison now so much, down to the hairstyle. And I thought his performance started of strong but lost steam halfway thru.
