Kanye West didn’t tell MTV that he was going to go Full Kanye at the VMAs

Kanye West Kanye’d all over the VMAs on Sunday. We know this. We knew it was going to happen. My prediction was that he would, at one point, scream “I AM GOD, BRUH” and drop the mic. Which almost happened, although not really. Instead, we got more than 10 minutes of off-the-cuff Kanye, who – as he admitted – had smoked some weed beforehand. He was vulnerable, egotistical, hypocritical, honest, crazy, sane, nuanced, ridiculous and amazing all at once. Classic Kanye. Anyway, MTV sources tell Us Weekly that no one at MTV had any idea what he was about to do.

No bro, they didn’t know what was happening! Kanye West’s ridiculous Michael Jackson Vanguard Award acceptance speech was shocking to the audience inside L.A.’s Microsoft Theater and the millions of viewers who tuned in to the live broadcast of the 2015 MTV VMAs — and even the people orchestrating the show. A source tells Us Weekly exclusively that West’s bizarre speech at the VMAs came as a complete shock to everyone, because nobody knew what he had up his sleeve.

“In the weeks leading up to the show Kanye went back and forth,” the insider tells Us. “He was initially going to perform and had many ideas. Then, he said he didn’t want to come at all. Then, he said he would come and not perform. The day of the show there was talk that he might perform.”

It looked like his speech even shocked his own family members, including his pregnant wife, Kim Kardashian, mom-in-law Kris Jenner, and sisters-in-law Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian. Award presenter and West’s former nemesis Taylor Swift also seemed shocked by his onstage antics as she stood directly, awkwardly beside Kim in the audience.

“Literally, up until he got onstage, no one was clear if he was going to perform or not,” the source adds to Us. “No one knew he was going to do that insane speech or what he was going to do.”

In fact, insiders thought he would deliver an impromptu performance when the “FourFiveSeconds” rapper, 38, first got onstage and grinned… without saying anything for several minutes. “When he had that long moment of silence, everyone was sure he was going to start rapping,” the source tells Us.

[From Us Weekly]

It would have been awesome if he performed, but I’m happy with the way his speech went down. I don’t blame him for not preparing a speech – preparing a speech just wouldn’t have been “Kanye” enough. This story also explains why his Vanguard “package” (narrated by Samuel L. Jackson) seemed a bit too short – MTV might have thought that Kanye would actually be performing some of his songs, so that’s why they sort of half-assed it. And for the record, I don’t think Taylor “also seemed shocked by his onstage antics as she stood directly, awkwardly beside Kim.” I think Taylor had her game face on and she seemed to be enjoying Kanye as much as everybody else.

    “Kanye’d all over the VMA’s.”

    *snort*

I just Channinged all over my Tatum.

  2. Esteph says:

Here is another person with a huge ego, who feels that they need to remind us how awesome they are.

I’m thinking a scene from mean girls when Cady gets called out by Janis and Damian about being “plastic”. I so want the same thing to happen to Kanye, knock him down a notch

  3. mia girl says:

“no one at MTV had any idea what he was about to do”

    Now THIS I believe.
It was the only unscripted, unplanned, and non-contrived moment of the show.

  4. Nicolette says:

And what did they expect exactly? Anticipating anything else would be as absurd as expecting Kim to wear something that fits and looks good.

  5. aims says:

When you give Kanye a microphone and an award be prepared for anything.

  6. Ysohawt1 says:

I loved it. Kanye was the best part.

The rest of the show was snooze fest, predictable. I barely watched it after his speech was over, only peaked up at TV when someone looked like they were giving a good performance.

  7. grabbyhands says:

If they didn’t know that he would go gull kanye then they are even dumber than I thought.

  8. paola says:

These MTV people want to play dumb. first they want Miley as a host then they give Kanye a special award.
    Seriously.. what did they expect??
Of course they were all hoping all this and more would happen. The world is talking about it

  9. FingerBinger says:

The producers knew he would do or say something crazy. Kanye is predicable with his unpredictability.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

This. Kanye is a guaranteed side-show, you don’t invite that on stage without crossing your fingers hoping for some fireworks. I’m sure Kanye still surprised them though.

  10. meme says:

if anyone didn’t deserve this award, it’s kanye. I can’t stand him and his raging ego. he can’t design clothes, he can’t even dress his wife or himself.

    • JudyK says:

He gets far too much undeserved credit. In that respect, he fits in perfectly with the entire Kardashian tribe.

  11. sassy says:

well now i thought the Kardashians were all anti drugs yet here is the Crown Prince hubbie of the porn queen admitting to smoking weed on national Tv – THE HORROR- does that mean we’ll be subjected to a family church stroll on Sunday with everyone coordinating in white to absolve Kanye of his sin??? And how did Khloe miss out on the VMAs ….is she still in hiding from her crazy ex Lamar …so many questions

    • swack says:

No, she’s hiding with James from the authorities that want to fine them for the fireworks they shot off without permission and from all the people wanting to sue them.

  12. Jenna says:

You know who else did the long pause before making a statement/speech? HITLER.

  13. LAK says:

When will people realise that Kanye is all bite and no trousers? Seriously, he is entertaining and trolling to have the top story in the news.

  14. J says:

Okay how did no one know this was going to happen? This is Kanye we are talking about, if he had not delivered this rambling, free-thinking sermon THAT would have been shocking. Its Kanye, you expect and prepare for anything.

  15. Sue says:

I am proud to say I cannot name a Kanye song and have never watched a Kardashian show! My only knowledge comes from what I read on here. And I have come to the conclusion I am not missing anything. This of course is my personal opinion. 🙂

    • briargal says:

You are not alone!!! I have never heard a Kanye song nor watched the K show either and am proud to admit that. If those crazy idiots who DO watch that insanity would STOP, hopefully this whole toilet bowl family would just be flushed down with the rest of the crap and butt wipes!

    • meme says:

Same here. Kanye is an a-hole of the highest order.

  16. Megan says:

I wanted to say something articulate about the way I felt about this, but I just can’t. I CANNOT with any more of this VMA crap. Forget it. It’s irrelevant. Time to move on.

    • JudyK says:

      Another +++ here.

So sick of giving credit, rewards, recognition to inarticulate, drug-induced rants and ramblings that profess to be so deep that we, the commoner, can’t get it, when, in fact, it’s just plain inarticulate rubbish.

  17. word says:

Uhhh he’s Kanye West, when does he not rant? They knew he was going to do this. The best part was when he said “I ain’t no politician” and then five minutes later said “In 20/20 I’m running for President”…that right there sums up his way of thinking.

Also is it just me or has Kanye put on pregnancy sympathy weight?

    • swack says:

I think he did the same thing last time Kim was pregnant because I vaguely remember someone commenting about it. Also, because of this rant, there are stories out there that the execs at MTV loved it and want Kanye to be the host next year. Can you imagine the length of the show if he is the host.

  18. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

To echo comments above Kanye is Kanye is Kanye. You can expect some sort of nonsense with him. I didn’t watch the show (figured the good bits would be on social media and I was right) but I knew 10-1 dude would roll up in his favorite brown outfit (and he wonders why people don’t take his fashion designing seriously) and ramble on about something or storm the stage or act a fool or anything he usually does.

That is Kanye. It sucks because I think someone who could have been really powerful has become a bit of a joke and I’M SORRY I totally just remembered Oprah texted Janet Mock about Kanye and now I’m dying to know the details.

  19. lunchcoma says:

Well, yeah, but after all these years MTV was aware there’s always a chance they’ll get full Kanye. And they’re just fine with it, because he stirs up controversy and attracts some attention to basically the only part of their programming that still relates to music. This isn’t the Oscars, where going off the rails is an embarrassment. MTV wants this sort of thing to happen.

  20. Vampi says:

Hey Kanye! Pssssst…lemmie tell you something. You are NO Michael Jackson in Bucharest Romania. Just because MJ popped up from beneath the stage and stood perfectly still for over 2 minutes while people lost their minds….doesn’t mean you’ll get the same result. You didn’t.
(if anyone wants to see it, look up MJ Bucharest Dangerous concert)
    Awesome 2 minutes.

  21. iheartgossip says:

Clearly, he has severe mental issues. And while it would be fun to crack on him; I cannot. He suffers to much or too many mental illnesses.

  22. Josefa says:

I’m shocked people enjoyed that speech. All of those pauses and rants were just painful. He just opened his mouth and made sounds without really saying anything, for 20 minutes.

I don’t think Kanye was underserving of the award, as an artist I do find him very talented. But I just can’t stand him.
