Sarah Jessica Parker shows off her ‘gringe’ on Harper’s Bazaar: cute or awful?

SJP2

Alright, I’ll be nice about Sarah Jessica Parker. I appreciate the fact that she does change it up a bit, that she’s not stuck in the Carrie Bradshaw-esque styling that made her famous. I actually think SJP looks nice with brown hair and I’m glad she’s not clinging to a blonde look. That’s refreshing. But I really, really hate her styling in the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar. I hate the bangs/gringe (grown-out fringe). I hate this particular shade of brown. I hate that Bazaar Photoshopped the crap out of her face. And I really hate how cheap that purple silhouette cover looks. Anyway, you can read SJP’s Bazaar cover story here. Some highlights:

She loves Manhattan: “I love the city. I love everything it has to offer. I think that my children are so lucky to be raised here. I love the subway, I love hailing a cab, I love traffic and people and all of the possibilities. I believe in all of that still.”

Living in the West Village: “My husband and I are genuinely surprised that we feel more public now than we have ever felt. It’s social media. Of course, when you work in TV or film, there is a familiarity, so you reconcile that. But the show has been off the air a long time now…You’re not ever alone. You are not ever, ever, ever, ever alone.”

She’s polite: “Don’t let anyone say I am not polite. I am polite because most of the time people are polite to me.”

Responding to people on Instagram: “I will say, ‘I’m sorry, I’m really disappointed,’ or ‘Why do you follow me if you find me so objectionable?’ I have used that word a lot. I don’t want people to mistake my kindness for naïveté. I am no idiot, is what I am saying.”

Turning 50: “I think my directness came with getting older. Now I will say I won’t wear something. But if it’s for a character, I will still try on everything on the rack. I don’t ever think, ‘I’m going to push it, I’m going to be controversial, I’m going to be provocative.’ But I am independent.”

Her Met Gala look this year: “I researched that for a really frickin’ ass long time. I studied Chinese opera, ballet, theater, design, costume design. I studied tassels, poms-poms, silk… I think people forget there is a theme; it is a costume ball….My son was like, ‘Mom, you’re a meme.’ I didn’t know what a meme was!”

Whether there’s an archetypal New York Woman now: “There are so many! They come from all different walks of life. But no one has really told the story of women from Staten Island, aside from Working Girl, obviously. I want to know about women who work in the city and go home to Staten Island. That’s why I love the subway so much—I can see people, try to know them. I love travel too. I am always game to figure something out about somebody else.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

I do think that some people (myself included) confuse SJP’s politeness and positivity for twee-ness and a sort of forced naiveté at times. What I truly think is that for people like me (bitter, jaded cynics), SJP can only be taken in small doses. She’s fine in this interview, but if I had to spend a day with her, I would go absolutely mad.

Meanwhile, SJP chatted with the Today Show this week about the possibility of a third Sex & the City movie. She said, in part, “It remains a not-often-had conversation. I know — and [writer-director] Michael Patrick [King] knows well — the story we might tell, if we ever tell it. But the real truth, and I’m not being cagey, is we’ve not discussed a when.” It basically sounds like she would be up for it and Michael Patrick King knows what the story would be, but beyond that… no one is really interested. I certainly hope they don’t make another one.

That photo is so edited, it doesn’t even look like her.

    • Granger says:

I find it really sad. If I were SJP, I would have been so insulted to receive a copy of that cover and realize the magazine thought your laugh lines and crinkles were so ugly they needed to be completely erased.

      • MG says:

I agree! They went way overboard!!

      • Brittney B. says:

        Right?!

If it were me, I would definitely feel insulted… like my age and individuality were being erased. I had a friend who was incredibly vain and image-conscious, and she edited her selfies like crazy… but then she started doing it to her friends too. Every time she posted a picture of me, my whole face would have this weird, blurry, same-color glow, and sometimes my jaw line and nose would be smaller too.

Of course I chalked it up to her own insecurities… but I couldn’t help feeling a little offended! I don’t know if she thought she was helping me look better or she wanted to “perfect” her friends before showing the world (like when magazines want eerily flawless cover models). But she clearly zeroed in on specific perceived flaws and removed them. When magazines do this, I always wonder how it makes the celebrity feel. We know the difference between Mariah Carey and Kate Winslet, but what about the celebs in the middle, who neither embrace nor try to hide their “flaws”? Do they develop insecurities because of this?

    • Fanny says:

umm..does anyone also sees Carla Bruni in this pic???

    • mia girl says:

Fanny – around the eyes, right?
I also see shades of Kathy Griffin.
Why did they do this to her?

    • Elisha says:

It’s extrememly frightening! Where are the whites of her eyes? She looks like an alien!

    • DrM says:

I saw that photo and thought…”Oh look! Zombie Sarah!!!” cause that’s what she looks like…

    • raincoaster says:

It’s like they cut out everything above the nostrils and replaced her with Carla Bruni.

  2. Senaber says:

Call in the martinis STAT! We have a level 5 bangs trauma. THIS IS NOT A TEST.

  3. minx says:

I agree with all of this–I also like that she changes it up, too. But that hair color is not good and I don’t like the bangs. She still is using too much eyeliner for her small eyes, IMO.

  4. Mellie says:

I love SJP and think she looks good…..sorry.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

I love her too. I also love NYC and agree with everythimg she said about it. So wish i could afford to live there. However, I can no longer stand Sex and the City. The show hasn’t aged well imo and another movie would be a mistake.

      • minx says:

I also like her very much; she seems like a good person.
I had to separate her from her SATC role because Carrie developed into such a superficial, self-centered brat, which is not what she was in the earliest episodes. She became my least favorite character of the four.

    • Jib says:

I like the fringe. But there is no way I believe she rides the subway!! I know she walks around the city, but on the subway you are a captive and have no escape from the crazies!!

  5. Cindy says:

Her eyes on that cover photo look demonic, what were they thinking airbrushing this much? Gonna give me nightmares.

I do like SJP though. If they do another SEX and the City movie, I hope they don’t screw it up. The second movie was Baaaaaad. Really bad.

  6. Josephine says:

She’s always been a hard worker (supported her family as a kid), has always been gracious despite some pretty mean attacks, and doesn’t court all that much attention. She’s a class act all the way.

  7. alice says:

what? is that Gisele Bundchen on a really bad day? Jesus I don’t understand how can editors of renamed magazines can’t see the disasters they put on the covers, and the people in charge of photoshopping the pics…how come they still have a job? But mostly: the stars that repeatedly are being photoshopped into oblivion to the point they are unrecognizable, and are suffering a HUGE damage to their image and their brand…do they angry call the people responsible of those covers and sue them? they SHOULD!

  8. Smd says:

Let go of the gringe hate. Those of us with thick hair have to have layers around the face otherwise it’s mushroom head! Way, way to much photos shop here, please stop already.

    • yellow says:

Thanks! I have fine textured hair, but I haven’t been able to decide or commit to short bangs or long ones the past 6 months, so, though it looks quite different, I’ve been kind of wading around here lately, too : ) At least I feel like I have a BIT of a style now 🙂

  9. meme says:

why bother taking photos for magazine covers anymore? they are so photoshopped they might as well just generate them from a computer. She looks NOTHING like that.

  10. Chloe says:

What on earth did they do to her eyes!? I didn’t even notice the bangs b/c those eyes look so effed.
I’ve always kind of liked SJP; she seems really classy. Too bad about the editors photoshopping her pics to death.

  11. ell says:

why did they photoshop her face like that?? I like her, always have. she has a great attitude.

  12. QQ says:

The definition of that ^^ level of hell for me is AnnE Hathaway, Anna Kendrick and The Zoe Deschanel girl

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I agree with this, especially considering Anna Kendrick..and many times also Sofia Vergara. Anytime she accepts an award, it’s like “look how adorable I am.” Ugh puke

  13. Jayna says:

I can’t remember if Celebitchy ever posted the photos about a month ago of Sarah Jessica in a bathing suit on vacation. She’s 50 and looked amazing, and it wasn’t posed photoshop pictures. It was candids of her out on the boat with friends. And the one-piece was really flattering on her.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3212973/Sarah-Jessica-Parker-50-puts-toned-physique-display-classic-black-swimsuit.html

    • Jay says:

SJP has always had a killer body. I think it’s her face people take issue with – it gets photoshopped like crazy.

      • Heather says:

This one has her photoshopped until she looks like an Alien. Her eyes look like they are glowing and her teeth look like they are surrounded by intergalactic mucus membranes of some kind. The photoshopper on this job should be sacked.

In general, I think the only reason SJP looks bad on red carpets sometimes is too much makeup, specifically heavy, heavy eye-liner. Naturally, she is much better looking.

      • Nancy says:

Jay: Agree. I remember the butter face jokes about her from years and years ago. I never watched Sex and the City because to me it was too much of a…you got to be kidding. Anyway, she has a great bod on her.

  14. G says:

I don’t care what anybody says. I’ve liked her since Square Pegs.

  15. Leah says:

I just left a comment on Bazaar’s website about the atrocious photoshopping of her face. I agree with other commenters. I’d be so insulted if I was SJP.

  16. Ginger says:

She and I have a similar face shape and I never, ever, ever part my hair in the middle. She should be pissed at the stylist. And the photo editor. Sarah says she will say no. She should have told them no here.

  17. Heather says:

    Who dat?

  18. Corrie says:

This is literally the worst celeb photo I’ve ever seen. What is up with her eyes. I think they completely rebuilt this image from scratch and its nothing like the photo. Why would she approve this image. She face is like a hologram. I love ya Sarah but this is so bad, can we blame Bazaar.

  19. Josefa says:

Her eyes in that cover were taken straight out from a Japanese horror movie. What the hell?!

  20. Sarah says:

I agree with everything she said about New York; I felt that way when I lived there. However I really don’t picture her riding the subway. Walking and taking cabs, yes. Subway, no.

I can also only take her in small doses. There was a time in the end of SATC and right after where she was using this affected squeal all the time and exuberantly gushing about being a “GIRL!” (Perfume ads?) and it’s just so over the top.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I agree – no way that she actually takes the subway. Give me a break!!! What a laugh. SJP, everyone knows you’re not that down-to-earth, stop trying.

    • Josephine says:

There are pics of her on the subway. lots of celebs and vips take the subway in nyc.

  21. Alex says:

So much for magazines and people being more accepting of how we really look. I thought they were moving towards less photoshop but this looks like I did it on my computer. It’s so bad and obvious. That’s crap! She is one of the few famous women that have resisted plastic surgeries and procedures and that’s how they reward her. Yeah the world is becoming more accepting my a$$

  22. mrsrockstar says:

Just wanted to say that more than a few years ago I spent several days with SJP and I was surprised. She was so petite and her face was much aofter and even prettier in person. Also low key.Nice.

    • Jib says:

I have a friend who, in his day, was President of a large cosmetics company and told me that almost 100% of the time, these actresses are teeny, teeny, tiny!! Farrah Fawcett: tiny. Candace Bergen: tiny. I bet Kyra Sedgewick is teeny. They look much bigger on stage, but they are really small. He also said many of them are bobble-heads, although we didn’t have that term back then. He just described them as such.

      • LAK says:

Nevermind the actresses, it’s the teeny, tiny male actors that surprise me. And i’m not referring to obviously tiny men like TC. I mean male actors in general are tiny and that’s why the regular sized ones always seem huge.

  23. lisa says:

photoshopped to death and still looks bad

  24. Jules says:

    I think she looks pretty.

  25. raincoaster says:

I’ve been watching Sex and the City on Cosmo recently, and I have to say that it stands up. Sure, some of the references are dated, but because it really was about universal themes of love and friendship and the war of the sexes, it holds up.

SJP has always been the best example of what world-class grooming can do for someone; without all that makeup and hair and photoshop, she’s not particularly attractive, although she does have great energy and always has. She’s a person people would want to talk to, but not necessarily worship as a beauty. Add some great hair and makeup and WOW. I want her people, just for one day…the day I casually run into Viggo Mortensen and he realizes I’m not really That Creepy Fan after all….

but there, I’ve said too much.
