Cate Blanchett in ‘tattoo dress’ by Aouadi Paris in NYC: lovely or bizarre?

Cate Blanchett must have had so much fun putting together her wardrobe for this past week of promotional work, because she has been killing it. I covered some of her looks on Friday – go here to see. These photos are from the Friday night screening of Carol in NYC. Cate decided to mix it up in an interesting way with this Aouadi Paris Fall 2015 dress. She doesn’t really have those tattoos and she did not get tattoos painted onto her body. That’s a sheer netting thing with “tattoos” built in. Thoughts? I like it because it’s different and because it’s interesting to look at. If she had fake tattoos painted on, I wouldn’t have liked it at much. As for Rooney Mara, she wore Chanel. I would have liked her look more if she had done a different hairstyle.

Everyone’s talking about how Cate has delivered two amazing projects this year, Truth and Carol. There’s some talk that she could get Oscar nominations for both, but I’m almost positive that is impossible with the Oscar rules – an actor cannot be nominated two times in the same category in one year (it is possible to get nominated for Supporting and Lead in the same year though). So if Cate had to choose, for which role would she want to get nominated?

For Truth, Cate and Robert Redford sat down with The Daily Beast to discuss the film, America, gun control and much more. You can read the full piece here. Here are some assorted quotes from Cate:

Cate on America & guns: “Doesn’t it have to do with the relationship this country has with its Founding Fathers and its Constitution? We’re trying to get changes to our Constitution to finally recognize indigenous Australians who were classified until 1969 as part of “flora and fauna.” We want to finally get constitutional recognition of them and it’s very difficult for a government to open the door to change the Constitution. But it seems profoundly impossible for this country to reassess that amendment that deals with the right to bear arms.”

Schoolkids & guns: “It’s also analyzing just how many kids in schools in America are on medication and the FDA and the amount of corn syrup in food, and what that does. There’s a whole intersection of issues apart from guns themselves. Certainly I know my children get nervous about the idea of coming here and going into school, but yeah, it’s an issue.”

On George W. Bush’s legacy: “I’ll never forget that moment with the second inauguration [of Bush] where, for the first time in American history, the cavalcade up to the White House was completely closed black cars. It was one of the most sinister things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

[From The Daily Beast]

Cate in particular has been doing a pretty good job of not stepping into some massive political controversy while promoting Truth. She and Redford have been getting so many political questions, and Redford answers most of them. He’s old, he doesn’t give a sh-t, and he’s a well-known lefty in political circles, so his statements aren’t that controversial. Cate is asked point-blank if she believes that the documents about Bush’s National Guard service were faked or real and she basically doesn’t say anything other than “there had long been a question mark over Bush’s service.” You know what would be interesting? If some big media outlets went through the information again now that Bush is out of office. I think a lot of people would still really like to know WTF happened when Bush was supposed to be serving in the National Guard.

    I love the dress.

    • ncboudicca says:

I do, too. I don’t think a lot of people could pull it off, but she does it effortlessly.

    • Shambles says:

Absolutely love it. As a tattooed lady, I’m living for this dress. She looks amazeballs, and she could pull off some real ink if she wanted to. The most important thing is that she looks like she’s having so much fun wearing it. She glows.

    • I like the dress as well, and I am not really a fan of a tattoos and formalwear combo. I always feel like it sort of distracts from the line of a dress. However, this is cool on her. I think it is less cool in real life than it is in pictures, because you can see the looseness of the illusion netting and whatnot, but it photographs well, and the “tattoo” is sort of designed to be in balance with the dress.

    • evermoreOriginalhere says:

I LOVE her style. She always reminds me of a modern day Lauren Bacall. Gorgeous her own look, not a cookie cutter beauty.

    • Zzzingara says:

I love the dress, too, because, so many women dress same-same-but-different, but this dress of Cate’s really is different. Im not into fashion at all, and cannot “dress up” to avoid embarrassment, much less save my life, but, boy, would I love to own this frock!

  2. AG-UK says:

Not sure about the tattoo dress sleeves but she is STUNNING her face is beautiful.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

She is beautiful. One of the loveliest and best actresses of my generation.

    • Franca says:

I don’t really find her beautiful. She carries herself well, almost regal, but her face is not that pretty to me. Something about the eyes.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she has beautiful skin, but don’t find her face beautiful either.

      • AG-UK says:

She has a sort of masculine face but on screen you can’t or at least I can’t take my eyes off her. Her skin is great too.

    • sills says:

She has great skin and looks like she really takes care of herself health-wise. Also she has a kind of aura for fashion, I rarely feel like ‘the dress is wearing her.’

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think the dress is silly and she is smug, self-righteous and annoying. And every review of Truth that I’ve read says she’s good in it, but it’s based on a book by the woman (Mapes?) who was fired along with Dan Rather and hasn’t worked since, and it’s obviously bitter and biased. I’m convinced that the documents were fake, and that Rather and Mapes had every reason to know they were. They may have thought the story behind the documents was true, but that is no excuse. I can’t stand George Bush, but fair is fair, and to now put out a movie claiming those documents weren’t obviously forged is irresponsible.

    • chick b says:

I get this. From what I’ve read about Mapes I’m disappointed the film is based on her POV. I have no love whatsoever for W so to my mind it’s important all the truths are told and not make the errors of two reporters the main story.

      • Pinky Rose says:

What I liked about the film (which was just fine. nothing incredible) was that it did not take sides. It does not claim the dosuments were true. It shows all the sides of these people and actually questions what is the role of media in society and how it shapes the final impression most have on things. It’s quite interesting though sometimes too focus on showing the inner machinations of corporations whiteout subtlety.

But yes Rather and Mapes playing some sort of victims in this promotional tour is pathetic.

      • chick b says:

That’s interesting, Pinky Rose. I read a couple of reviews that panned it but based on your comments I’d like to check it out.

  4. Josephine says:

I love Rooney’s dress. It’s youthful and interesting and fun, and actually fits her.

  5. kay says:

    Can’t stand her smugness.

  6. Falula says:

She lost me at corn syrup.

  7. tracking says:

I like the idea of the dress, but not on her. She doesn’t pull it off imo. Maybe with slicked back hair and edgier makeup.

    • alice says:

yeap. The whole idea of this dress is that’s aimed to someone like Lady Gaga or Rita Whora, or Rihanna. This is the testament that Cate really can’t get away with pulling off ANYTHING, nope.

      • Nori says:

        Rita Whora? Really?

      • alice says:

@Nori I know, I’m sorry but I don’t like her at all, and I Michael K nicknames for celebs I dislike. Since I’ve read that I can’t help it, she’s Rita Whora for me.

    • belle de jour says:

To me, it looks like a cheap novelty item some 17-year-old suburban mall girl (borrowing her mom’s black go-with-everything pumps) would find to temporarily look ‘edgy’ at a grown-up formal occasion or the big dance. She has access & the looks to wear so many genuinely interesting and creative, sophisticated clothes from any number of forward designers… this one just strikes me as a little silly and juvenile for her.

By contrast, love Rooney Mara’s whole look – especially the unfussy lines at top and the treatment at the bottom of the skirt… with those shoes… sigh. So chic.

      • tracking says:

I agree re: Rooney Mara’s look; she does look lovely and chic. In fact, I would have expected these dresses reversed.

  8. alice says:

She said recently on Ellen that she and her husband got tattoed when they’ve met. Knowing Cate “humor” I’m not sure if she was serious or just trying to say something funny, something that she would backpedal later (remember her statement about having had lesbian experiences…they way she put it I’m not sure if she was serious or not, and both her statement and correspondent backpedaling were at least ambiguous: that’s exactly what she was going after I think)
So I want to know about her real life tattoo, that’s it. Any pics of it?

  9. GreenieWeenie says:

What’s that non-profit…ProPublica? They should do an expose. I’m more interested in Donald Rumsfeld. I think that guy’s an idiot. His whole approach to Iraq just struck me as perplexingly naive for a guy who had every reason to know better.

I’ve been outside the US for years now and I honestly really really enjoy the way I can live. I can walk down the street at midnight and be perfectly safe. I could never do that anywhere I lived in the 14 years I lived in the States. I just don’t have to worry about my physical safety and it’s awesome. For all those freedoms, there are a lot of Americans living in fear.

  10. Donna says:

I like the idea of the dress but I think the neckline is unflattering.

  11. Nori says:

I like Cate’s look a lot; it’s sexy and edgy and she pulls it off.

  12. Chinoiserie says:

Very unique. I would not mind wearing dress like this myself, I would not want permanent tattoos but something like this could be fun to wear.

  13. antipodean says:

I am really looking forward to seeing the film Truth. I am sure it will have a very interesting view of that particular scandal. I remember at the time when Bush was re-elected that every single person I knew, and who discussed it, was horrified that this inarticulate, bumbling scion of a mega wealthy family could pull the wool over the American people’s eyes, yet again. His later actions bore out the dread we felt. When that period is examined by history, I am sure there will be some chilling stories uncovered. At least his father had the reputation of being a well meaning, intelligent, albeit wealthy person (their financial history could bear closer scrutiny too). She makes a very interesting observation with regard to the sinister, black covered cavalcade of cars at the inauguration. A completely different occasion when Obama and Michelle walked together in the open air. Michelle’s dress (golden), and their combined demeanour was a breath of fresh air.

    • belle de jour says:

ElderBush’s beholden relationship with the Saudis also makes for some interesting reading, googling and further probing. I admit I cried very angry, ugly tears when the idiot prince was ensconced the second time round; I was in downtown Austin, at a bar for politicos and press near the capitol, surrounded by people who knew him well… and even the most jaded were also shouting and stunned and protesting at the overhead tv.

  14. SKF says:

Rooney must be absolutely minuscule! I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition and they had a couple of dresses that Cate famously wore and they were TINY! The waist was just ridiculously small. And here Rooney looks tiny next to Cate… Crazy!
