Carey Mulligan gave birth to a baby girl named Evelyn Mumford 3 weeks ago

It’s slightly amusing to me to see that someone at the studio told Meryl Streep that she needs to take a big seat and not say anything else for a while. After Meryl took a big dump on feminism last week, the Suffragette producers must have been like, “Well, this was unexpected. I guess Carey is going to have to do more.” These photos are from last night’s NYC premiere of Suffragette – Meryl didn’t even come! It was just Carey Mulligan, really. Carey wore this Alexander McQueen dress which is… sort of boring, actually. It’s Sarah Burton-for-McQueen, so that explains it.

It’s amazing to see Carey out and about and hustling for this film considering she literally just gave birth a few weeks ago. All we know about when she gave birth was that it happened in September and it was probably mid-to-late September, considering she was begging off of an appearance at Telluride in early September because she still hadn’t given birth. While Carey appeared on The Graham Norton Show over the weekend, she also confirmed that she had a girl and that she gave birth “three weeks ago.” And now we know the name too…

EVELYN. Evelyn Mumford. Because Carey’s husband is Marcus Mumford of the Mumford & Sons. Carey told ET that the name Evelyn has no real family significance, she just “came up with it” on the fly. It sort of reminds me of the non-drama of Keira Knightley’s baby-naming. Keira didn’t announce she had given birth for a while, and then she sort of dropped the name to a media outlet like it was no big deal. Keira had a little girl too, and she named her daughter Edie. Considering Keira and Carey are good friends, don’t you believe that Edie Righton and Evelyn Mumford will grow up together and by BFFs for life?

I….like that name. Still hipster-ish without the child getting picked on.

  2. SarahUK says:

I like her dress, she looks really lovely here.

3 weeks after giving birth, I couldn’t stand still for longer than 30 seconds let alone walk about in heels.
So I take it childbirth went well for her.
Man, she doesn’t even look vaguely postpartum.

I can’t even remember what it was like 3 weeks after birth. It seemed like one long exhausting day and I finally woke up about 4-5 months after the birth.

She looks absolutely goregeous, and she is able to do the promotions , good for her. But I wish they would let the poor woman sleep.

    • Sunshine Gold says:

Agreed! Not even a hint of undereye circle! She is apparently superwoman.

  4. Patricia says:

I always find that she conveys a warmth in the eyes. She seems so sweet and smart.
    Very happy for her.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I feel exactly the same way about her. And the name Evelyn is really lovely and goes well with the last name. Congratulations.

Love the name, love the dress, love Carey. Jesus, she’s so pretty. I could stare at her face all day.

I saw the Graham Norton episode and Meryl seemed out of it, like she wasn’t really present.

I’ve never had a baby and she looks way better than I do! Anyways, I like that hair color on her a lot, not too dark or too light.

  8. mia girl says:

    I love her.

And I love her brown, I mean green hair (hat tip to mimif and her brownies)

  9. tracking says:

Lovely name. Enjoying the fact that no one knew until she showed up no longer pregnant.

  10. meme says:

ahhh, a lovely talented actress who isn’t an attention whore and keeps her private life private. I love her.

Ditto on that one. I saw Far from the Madding Crowd the other night, and she was riveting in the part of Bathsheba. For such a tiny woman she had the whole film nailed down. I think she would even give Julie Christie a run for her money, and that’s saying something. Martin Sheen however, whom I actually love in most things, is no Peter Firth.

      • mia girl says:

Yes! As usual, she was great as Bathsheba, She can convey so much with the slightest expression. Related, I had never seen Matthias Schoenaerts in anything and by the end of that film I was in love with him. Great actor.

    • And with real acting chops as well! I adore her and I love the name Evelyn.

    Love those shoes. Want.

  15. Applapoom says:

I used to not get her appeal….at all. Then I saw her on Graham Norton and now she is my favourite actress. Her voice and the way she talks is so amazing and she did an amazing job as Bathsheba. Love her.

  16. Elizabeth says:

Carey looks really good! Happy, healthy, beautiful dress and gorgeous makeup – I LOVE the red lip.

  17. Violet says:

Why was she ever blonde? She looks so good with brown hair.

  18. Ainda says:

Oh… How nice! Evelyn is so low key and beautiful…
Love her and her husband. They are both so nice and normal. How refreshing! Please keep posting about her; she has impressive acting skills.

  19. Bridget says:

Wow, she looks great. And she just gave birth a few weeks ago?!? Sheesh!

  20. Debutante says:

If she’s such a good actress, and believe me , I thought she was great in “An Education”, why was she so bad in The Great Gatsby ??
She seemed so miscast in that movie.

    • mia girl says:

I thought the entire movie was a giant miscast…
      starting with Leo and Tobey.

    • SusanneToo says:

Catch her in the “Blink” episode of Doctor Who. She was outstanding as Sally Sparrow. That’s when I started following her.

  21. alice says:

Meryl can be insufferable sometimes but I don’t think any exec would have the courage to tell her to shut up. She was at the LFF premiere and went to the Graham Norton Show with Carey and did the press junkets. I doubt that she didn’t go to the NY premiere because somebody told her to keep it quiet. If anything she maybe needed to be in London for finishing the Frears movie.

  22. Tig says:

Amazing that she and Keira both pulled off having their daughters w/o any fanfare. It can be done! (Looking at you Kim K)

Carey looks so good in this photo. I am in awe of her stamina! 3 weeks post-partum I could barely manage a shower!
