Caitlyn Jenner: ‘Caity is why God put me on this earth: to tell my story’

wenn23140227

Here are some photos of Caitlyn Jenner at last night’s event for Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year Awards. As we previously covered, Caitlyn was named one of several women of the year for 2015 for her trans advocacy, etc. While I think Caitlyn’s dress is kind of fug and dated (totally ‘80s, right?), I like this neckline on her. It makes her shoulders and décolletage look great. In an introductory video, Caitlyn told the audience, “Of all the things I’ve done in my life, Caity is why God put me on this earth: to tell my story; to be honest with myself about who I am. And in doing that, making a difference in the world. And I’m very happy to be living on the other side.” Here are some highlights from her speech:

Her transition, talking with her pastor: “There was a French activist and writer, Simone de Beauvoir, who said, ‘You are not born woman. You become one’ … Words I live by. My transition was very, very long. I had many, many, many years of isolation from the world, of lying to the world, of not being myself. I got to a few years ago; I was back out in Malibu in my home, all alone. I raised wonderful children. And I thought: “What am I gonna do with my life?” I isolated myself and lied to myself and lied to the world for so long: “What am I gonna do with my life?” I sat down with my pastor, talked to him about my issues. And yes, I had a lot of conversations with God. I came to the conclusion: You know what? Maybe this is why God put me on this earth—to tell my story. To be authentic to myself, to who I am. And maybe in doing that, maybe you can make a difference in the world. What a great opportunity in life to have.”

The tabloids: “I sat down with each one of my 10 children, and it was the big secret in the family that nobody could talk about because I was getting destroyed in the tabloids every week, walking through the grocery line, looking at the headlines. And so were my children. It was hurtful. So I sat each one of ’em down, and I said, “This is my story. This is who I am. What can I do?”

The shift after her Diane Sawyer interview: “So it started with Diane Sawyer … so eloquently and so beautifully telling my story. And then two months later, then pictures and the name came out: Boy, oh boy, did the conversation change. No longer [was] the media saying terrible things about you, because they would be homophobic. All of a sudden, everybody became comfortable…Boy, did the conversations change. All of a sudden, all these new questions came into my life. People were going, “What’s your style? What are you gonna wear? Who are your heroes? Are you a feminist?” All these questions, and I said, “Oh my gosh, I’ve got so much to learn.”

Recognizing the women who have come before her: “I could not have done this without the people who have gone before me: the Laverne Cox’s of the world, the Janet Mock’s … What I have learned about this community is what a great group of women there are out there, who have worked so hard to be authentic to themselves and authentic to womanhood.”

[From People]

I kind of like that Caitlyn still talks about God, her faith, her relationship with her pastor and having some higher calling. I think it’s an important framing device for trans issues, because all too often, Christianity has been wielded as a weapon against LGBT people. It’s good to hear more prominent people in the LGBT community talk about their faith and their personal relationship with God. Anyway, as I said previously, I don’t hate the fact that Caitlyn was recognized by Glamour Magazine. She was one of several women recognized and even if you don’t care for Caitlyn, her parenting or her family, she still changed the conversation around trans issues significantly.

Meh she looks good In a Soap Opera actress of the 80s Glamour Shots way, which is more appropriate at her age than say… Trying to dress like you are in your daughter’s age group with Rubber Peep toe knee High boots and the like… so this is a fairly breezy win for her

  2. missmerry says:

while I agree the neckline is flattering, this looks like something she found in the 80’s section of her ex-wifes closet.

There has to be a picture from the 80s of satans homegirl wearing something just like this.

  3. CORA says:

She has an amazing story. All those years not living out loud. 🙁 Love that she gave a shout out to Laverne and Janet!

OK. What actor would do a bio-pic justice? You know it’s coming one day.

    Discuss….

They’d have to be young enough to cover the Olympic years, and then age believably, and also look good in makeup and heels.

A few years ago I would have gone with Damon, maybe he could still do it.

  4. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I read the Caity part so many times before I realized she’s referring to herself in the 3rd person. That’s healthy.

I still don’t see what she’s actually done for transgender individuals, mostly I’m starting to see that thing so many people complain about where no matter who and how many people fight for an issue it doesn’t seem to get attention until it’s packaged in the right white male box. (See Stonewall movie and all the complaints about it).

At best all I expect from her now is to not completely damage this issue in the public eye.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I watched her show to learn more about her & her transition but instead I realized she’s way more privileged than all of the other women who tried helping her out & teaching her more about the trans community. Is she doing it for attention? Maybe idk but I really loved all the other women in her show because they suffered & shared their stories that you get to understand & learn from them. Caitlyn complained about makeup, dresses & avoiding paparazzis. I think she has a long way to go because whether she likes it or not she became a spokesperson for the trans community & the last thing they need is someone who is a Kardashian 2.0

    • HH says:

The Simone de Beauvoir reference threw me off. I’m glad she’s doing more substantive reading, but hopefully she doesn’t just pick out the parts that suit her. Some of the best feminist philosophers and theorists were WOC and/or lesbian. So hopefully she truly learns about these communities. It seems so antithetical to learn about feminism and remain in a bubble of privilege. Yet, so many people do. Sigh.

      • Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

Caitlyn is taking the Simone de Beauvoir quote out of context. It’s full meaning is that it takes years of oppression to socialize a female into becoming what our society traditionally thinks a woman is: a second-class citizen.

It’s not a quote about realizing your potential or following your dream, Caitlyn.

  5. kimbers says:

We’re all here to tell our story…you just have a FAT head from fame and failed at being a good parent to their daughter. You do nothing for anyone except yourself and do not represent anyone except the ugly reflection of the Kardashian brand that’s just old and not cute. Frankly …she’s in the same pathetic category as kris. No roses here just the smell of bs.

    • Msmlnp says:

I agree. And I would go further that she has been a horrible parent to all her children.

    • ImFlying says:

I’m with ya’ll. I thought no one noticed. What about how he ignored his first daughter. And, where is the son that got so depressed that he took off, got heavily into drugs? Is he concentrating his endless time, efforts and income to help save this boy from whatever demons are after him? Also, who would gift one son with a vehicle that you killed someone with? If he wanted to help out, couldn’t he just get a different new vehicle. And….didn’t he have a responsibility in the raising of the other daughters of Babylon? Lastly, the title “God” is used in many religions. Where did he say “The Most High” or “Jesus”, which would actually identify his God as Christianity? I never paid much attention to Bruce Jenner before he was crammed down our throats. He was a self indulged bad parent, and a weasel of a man, IMO. His stance to “stand for anyone”, man or woman, is a farce. A consistent, private relationship with Jesus would definitely help. To h#ll with his Donatella Versace bags. Put it down and actually pick up a bible bonehead. I am sure you have a comfy sofa, blanket and hot tea.

      • Bravo says:

        Here here!

      • PoppySeed says:

I agree with you all that Caitlyn is a horrible parent and thus far, has done virtually nothing for the transgender community. However, PLEASE refer to her as a her. Misgendering someone just because you dislike them isn’t nice.

      • ImFlying says:

Poppyseed, you have a sweet heart and I hear you. The honest truth is, I also have a heart for the gay and transgender community. I know that anyone that struggles with this is under constant persecution (often self persecution). I have gay friends that I love to be around, and find them some of the best of humans that I know. I tell my children that is actually the one subject I stay away from, being a Christian, I just want to love them, and let Jesus be God. It just seems that I can’t respect him the same as almost any other LGBT I have met. It’s almost like that last Kris-mas Kard they sent out. Jenner was trapped in a time capsule of sorts, looking hauntingly at his past athletic achievements, glory and fame. Like he missed the adulation and attention of the past, and was instead, drowning in a sea of Babylonian goddesses. I get the sense that he is very, very spoiled, out of touch, and therefore thinks this can be “something to do”…a cause, help others, pontificate. Make more and more money with his speaking engagements. You are right, he is a fraud, and is “helping” no one. If I was gay, I would say “Stop being on my side, please!”
        Rant over.

    • yep says:

      1,000 percent CORRECT. amen

  6. Mimz says:

I hate everything about this look. The hair is try-hard, the makeup a tad heavy, and the dress a disaster that should have never existed. She’s super tall and the way that long dress wraps her tall lean body is just… not IT.
And I still side-eye the whole woman of the year award but I agree that she changed the conversation. But that’s about it.

  7. lisa says:

well we know she wasnt put here to parent anyone

  8. LadyJane says:

A side note: has ANYONE else noticed that Caitlyn looks exactly like the character Deanna Monroe in The Walking Dead? Anyone?

    • mimif says:

Ha, yes! We said the same thing upthread, but maybe more like Bruce. There were some funny memes going around about it on Twitter last Sunday.

  9. Pedro45 says:

So she never heard of Simone De Beauvoir before someone wrote her that speech, correct?

    • mimi says:

ha, I thought the same thing and explained the actual quote. didn’t see your comment before I posted mine downthread.

  10. Debutante says:

Holy God !! At first glance, I thought this was Courteney Cox ! LOL

  11. mimi says:

Simone de Beauvoir’s quote is totally taken out of context. What she was saying is that womanhood is an arbitrary construct that works along societal ideas of correct conduct and behavior and the expectations placed on women on how they live their life. That you are not born a woman because of your biology, but that you become one when society creates you and pushes you into the role it sees fit (as in sex vs gender).
It’s still a pretty important part of modern gender theory.

But yeah, fine by me if this quote speaks to Caitlyn in a different way than was originally intended. I just thought someone should mention that.

    • perplexed says:

That’s what I thought the quote meant too. And then I wondered how much of a construct of femininity Caitlyn Jennifer might have bought into in terms of the way she styles herself (i.e her first magazine cover as a woman).

  12. artsygirl says:

i dont understand why people are referring Caitlyn Jenner as a ‘she”, “her”, etc..as far as i know..if you still have male body parts, you are still a ‘He”. you may just look like a woman, but i’m sure your passport still states male under gender. Bruce Jener wanted to be referred to as a female, ‘she” by the media when she transitioned and even though it is not correct, why do people and the media obliged? i don’t get it.
also, i don’t get why she got the “woman of the year” award, for what? and you know what i mean..there are countless other women who have done great good and changes for the world but are just not that famous and i think it should have gone to someone more deserving.

    • FingerBinger says:

For Caitlyn and other trans women gender is about how they identify not about what’s going on physically. Caitlyn identifies as a woman. It’s not a big deal to say she or her. I’m not sure but you can legally change your gender on passports and driver’s license.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Because she identifies herself as a woman, always did. She is a woman, she’s transitioning. Yes, she got more media attention because of the Kardashians & their shenanigans but Caitlyn is a woman, a more privileged woman but still a woman. Whether she has still male body parts or not, Caitlyn has always felt herself be a woman trapped in a man’s body. So she is a she & the media should call her “Caitlyn” “she” “her” which is correct.

    • Bravo says:

As a female, he is insulting to me. He got that woman of the year because he made a deal to do his first interview with Diane Sawyer. The award means nothing.

  13. atiaofthejulii1 says:

What has Caitlyn done? Nothing substantial yet. Bruce came out, that took courage but Caitlyn…let’s see what she is doing and has done in 5 years.

  14. Kelly says:

    Go away.

  15. Paris says:

    Oh, PLEASE!!!

  16. Jayna says:

She is 66 years old. I think she looks very stylish for her age.

  17. Except that Simone de Beauvoir was talking about how women are socialized to represent the female gender “becoming a woman” when they are born FEMALE. She did not mean that anyone can become a woman. “Caitlyn” is just appropriating the female gender. Using Simone’s words to justify the appropriation is a slap in the face to any real feminist who knows the female experience these transgenderists are erasing with their appropriation.

  18. LiLu says:

Is it just me or is she/he starting to look unhappy?!?!? At the beginning Bruce/ Caitlyn looked so happy to be dressing and acting woman…now she/he looks kinda bored, unhappy, sad, ect!

    • Kitten says:

“now she/he looks kinda bored, unhappy, sad, ect!”

Maybe she’s taking tips from the rest of the Kardashians.

  19. outhousecat says:

That dress is the same one that the female crew members wore on the original Star Trek, only longer. If Caitlyn cut it off just below the crotch she’d look like one of the expendable security officers that were always getting blown up. “Caitlyn” is fug. Her fashion sense in nil. I don’t understand the hoopla and I wish “Caitie” would go away and take the rest of those nasty Cardashians with it.

Aaand not sure why this went to moderation. Whatever.

    • TotallyBiased says:

THANK YOU for noticing this is clearly an Ensign About-to-be-kissed-by-the-Captain dress.
      I am not alone.

  20. Kiyoshigirl says:

The dress dates her. She looks every day of 65 here. I like the chest/shoulder view from the side, but head on she looks like a line backer. I have broad shoulders myself and I’m careful about the styles I wear because of it. If I had that dress on, I would look like a linebacker too.

  21. Gwenma says:

    “C a i t y” and “God”. What a stinking hypocritical wang-keeping piece of trans-fetishism.

  22. Dina Strange says:

Okay, so this guy who is now a girl supposedly seems to me a gimmick. I mean – animals are being destroyed, ecogenocide is going on, there is overpopulation, hunger, few control the rest, and 24/7 we are showered with this.

Wake up people, you can’t be THAT dumb.

  23. MB says:

Hang on, you are saying that God put you on Earth to tell your story? But you didn’t have a story before you were put on earth. So are you suggesting that God put you on Earth to live the life you have just so you can then tell your story? That is the most delusionaland narcissistic thing I have ever heard.
Nobody is put on earth to tell their story because they don’t have one until it happens, unless the implication is that all lives are predetermined.

  24. dr mantis toboggan says:

Kim Howe may disagree with this

  25. TheBucketResidenceTheLadyOfTheHouseSpeaking says:

I think the hair, face, and neck look great but, alas, like Madonna, SJP, and Angelina Jolie, the hands will always give you away. Smooth face, crypt keeper hands. Welcome to womanhood.

  26. Neonscream says:

What exactly does “authentic to womanhood” mean? What is this inherently female thing she’s talking about? If that exists then the misogynists are right, there is an inherent difference between men and women and it isnt about societal construction. The things we think of about what a woman is are that way because we’ve designed them that way. Their is nothing that can legitimately be referred to as authentically woman. That’s a load of crap.

Also referring to yourself in the third person is either extremely narcissistic or certifiably insane.

  27. bababoo says:

Many of you seem to be discussing this person as a legitimate transgender woman–whether in negative/positive ways.

Problem is : This is all a sham, and if more people need to discuss this person, then I’d rather it be about how it’s all BS. It’s very insulting to us all as consumers … and esp. the transgender community.
