Christie Brinkley on body image: ‘It’s up to us to set our own standards’

Christie Brinkley Signs Copies Of "Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets, and Shortcuts To Looking Great"
Let me be clear from the start of this story, I don’t think Christie Brinkley is wrong, I just think that she’s full of sh*t. She’s obviously telling people what she thinks they want to hear, and what she believes will sell her new book, Timeless Beauty. The last we reported on Brinkley, 61, she was claiming that she’d only tried Botox once while conveniently forgetting to mention the plastic surgery which has significantly changed the entire shape of her face. She was also touting diet and exercise for boosting one’s mood and looks, which is perfectly reasonable. In this new interview, with AOL Build, Christie talked about body image, image standards, and how women often strive to please others with our appearance. It was a good message, but this is a lady who has a beauty book and a hair extension and skincare line. She’s not really following her own advice. Here’s more of what she said.

“I think that my industry has come a long way, although we’re still a little too appreciative of the super, super unhealthfully skinny body. People’s bodies come in every shape and size, and I really believe that all shapes and sizes should be celebrated as long as that’s your natural, healthy weight,” Brinkley said during the chat.

Brinkley, whose kids Jack and Sailor Brinkley-Cook have both dabbled in modeling, is all about having a more relaxed perspective on appearance and setting our own standards of what’s beautiful.

“If I could say something to my younger self or to my daughters, I always try to say, ‘You know, we’re always so concerned about what ‘they’ think or what ‘they’re’ going to say. Well, who is that, ‘them’? Who are we referring to?’ Because basically, it’s up to us to set our own standards of what’s right for us and be leaders, and not be under this pressure of thinking that we need to fit in to something that maybe we’re not meant to fit into. Maybe we’re meant to be leaders and set examples,” she said.

“Right now, what I’m seeing is a real movement of women supporting women, like, really being excited to encourage each other and be there for each other, and I think that that’s really important,” Brinkley added. “I think that that will only lift all of us and make all of us thrive and really shine.”

[From The Huffington Post]

Much of what she said, barring the fact that she’s saying it, rings true to me. We do need models who are not underweight (which is technically below a BMI of 18), as we discussed in the post on Victoria Beckham a couple of days ago. I don’t believe people have a “natural” weight, weight is the product of what we put in our bodies and how much energy we expend, but I believe we have a “healthy” weight, which can be objectively measured for height, age and gender. That’s probably what she meant anyway. It’s also true that we should live and look in a way that’s genuine to who we are, not what other people expect from us, which can be arbitrary and can change with beauty trends. Again, this is Christie Brinkley saying these things, though. She’s a model and she’s kept up her looks with hard work and she’s capitalizing on it. These words might ring more true from, say, Geena Davis, or someone committed to these causes. It’s not really a congruent message coming from Christie. Also, Kaiser put it much better than I did, she told me that “people are tired of being preached to by blonde, traditionally ‘beautiful’ women who have spent their entire professional careers profiting from their inclusion in society’s extremely narrow definition of beauty.”

This comment from Jay on the Huffington Post also sums it up for me. “In related news, Bill Gates said today that we should stop worrying so much about money.

Yeah I am with you. She’s not wrong, but I don’t think she really believes what she is saying.

  2. Mimz says:

Well, I don’t care for what she says because it’s the same thing everyone elses says, but with different words
but i just wanted to say whatever she did is impressive, she doesn’t look 61. I’m shocked!

    • Jib says:

Major plastic surgery. A few years ago, she must have had an eye lift because I didn’t even recognize her. And all I can see is the Joker when I look at her mouth.

I find women who age naturally so much more beautiful than this.

      • Bettyrose says:

But who is Christie Brinkley besides beautiful? I mean, I’m she would have been beautiful at 61 even naturally, but when your whole sense of self worth has been defined by a camera your whole life, it’s probably hard not to be glamour magazine beautiful.

  3. GingerCrunch says:

I might have listened to what she had to say based on how well-preserved she’s kept herself. But then I saw her on Access Hollywood and she came across like a loon! So affected. Trying to act so youthful! And bubbly! Is that what she’s really like???

    • Joaneu says:

I saw her on an interview the other day and I, too, was taken aback by her personality. She was overly giggly and flirty. It was just plain awkward. If it were 1985, it would have been fitting. I get the feeling she’s trying too hard.

    • JudyK says:

She’s pretty, but, as you said, her “bubbly” personality is just silly and unflattering. Constantly perky people get on my nerves anyway, but she’s just too much…way too much.

    • Hadleyb says:

Its the drugs. I am sure she is on many PX’s at this point.

Also she really does forget there is Google and we can look up pics of her first modeling gigs and its painfully obvious she got her eyes done WAY back then. It did made her look better I will say that and she looks GREAT now but no book, even following all her advice will have you looking that good at 65 unless you visit her PS.

Her smile is wonderful though and she isn’t looking overly alien or puffy faced from too many fillers.

So her real advice is : start the PS early with tiny tweeks that no one notices and keep it up, dye your hair frequently as you get gray, workout, spray tan, get boob job around 45 for the saggy tits, wear hose when you hit 55, and don’t get too thin. And keep lines on your face to look real ( she has always had eye wrinkles and nasolabial folds around her mouth when she smiles).

      • GingerCrunch says:

Love the “real” advice. Now that I’d read!

      • Jaded says:

She’s always been a loon – I remember her wayyyy back when she was dating Billy Joel. She was insufferable then. Barbara Walters interviewed her then and asked her to sing her version of Good Ship Lollipop that she would do every time her hair came out of curlers at a shoot. She sang it. It was cringeworthy.

    • Tiny Martian says:

Yes, I saw her on Fallon and felt the exact same way. To me it’s incredibly unattractive to see an older woman striving so hard to appear “young”. Who wants to be young?! I’m getting wiser with age, and that’s what I want the world to see, not me acting like a teenager for as long as possible.

    • arabella says:

OMG she’s totally her character from Parks & Rec, Gayle, IRL!

  4. astrid says:

She looks good but to put it all on clean living is bullshit.

  5. India says:

You are right Celebitchy. She has totally changed the entire shape of her face. For one thing, it is loaded with fillers which when over done can distort your features. However, she is still quite stunningly beautiful.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah, she’s had a sh*t-ton of stuff done but she does look pretty good by Hollywood Alien Standards ™

  6. daphne says:

her hands don’t deny her age, though.

    • Felice. says:

It’s always in the hands. People forget to sunscreen their hands too.

    • JudyK says:

You’re right…I’m a little older than Christie and look younger, too…and that’s with nothing having been done to my face. Even when I do need something done to my face, it won’t happen, because I refuse to be a “plastic person.”

And my hands do reveal my true age.

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

I use exfoliants and use serum and moisturizer on my hands – just like my face. So, for the most part, my hands don’t give my age away!

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I know everyone will rave about how great she looks, but all I see when I look at her is plastic. I think she’s such a superficial person, and everything about her is fake. Timeless beauty is not about clinging to the same look and hairstyle that you had at 16. She looks petrified in every sense of the word. I think Helen Mirren is a much better example of timeless beauty. She looks older than Christie, yes. But she looks real and genuine and beautiful at her age. What’s wrong with that? Why is it better to look like a scary plastic person?

    • astrid says:

      Good comparison.

    • Esmom says:

Petrified is a really good word for how she looks. This is not aging gracefully, it’s desperately and foolishly clinging to her misguided notion of youth. So, yeah, anything she says on the topic comes off as pretty disingenuous to me.

    • Naddie says:

Exactly. I always say to people around me, plastic is the new standard. No wonder why they photoshop the hell out of anyone.

    • Hadleyb says:

Hellen has had PS though as well. Just not as much and isn’t making her life about looking good or as young as she can.

But I think we all love Helens attitude, where she really doesn’t give a fuk. She tries to look good for her movies, red carpet etc but you see her out and and about with no makeup on, and baggy cargo pants as well. She just gives you a finger and keeps grocery shopping.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. I don’t object to someone having something done if it makes them happier with their appearance. But Christie just looks ridiculous to me. Agree about Helen’s attitude.

    • Jib says:

And Brinkley looks like the Joker. It’s all I can see.

  8. SusanneToo says:

I never found her beautiful or interesting. Nor Cheryl Tiegs, Cybill Shepard, Patti Hansen. They’re all so bland and boring.

  9. Nancy says:

She looks the same as always but older….and the same hairdo. She is no better or worse because of her genetics and wealth to keep that look going. She’s been married four times, which isn’t relevant to the story, but tells me no matter what you look like you have the same problems.

  10. JFresh says:

She wears a top piece / partial wig, right?

  11. Allie May says:

Why are these famous women endlessly selling books on beauty and fitness? Life is about more than these two subjects. And Christie Brinkley is way over tanned. I think it looks terrible on such a pretty woman.

    • Granger says:

Brinkley and Cindy Crawford seem to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how they look, and it continually makes me sad. When I’m 61, if all I want in life is to look 30 again, I’m going to ask my husband to put me out of my misery.

  12. tracking says:

    That is one tight face.

  13. Naddie says:

    I can smell the hypocrisy.

  14. Pandy says:

OK, I just put a hold on her book at the library. I’m interested in her make up tips as I’m not very good with make up. Will report back when we next visit Christie. I think she looks great though, surgically enhanced or not.

  15. Suzanne says:

She looked like a cartoon figure from the side…on Fallon the other night. Giddy and flirty but she still has a knock out body and legs. High collar to cover the ever evident aging neckline…but over all…she looks like her face is inflated. And it probably is. Her mouth was really weird…like her bottom teeth protrude further out than her top teeth…and it wasn’t like that when she was younger.

  16. Daria Morgendorffer says:

We jokingly call this woman Dorian Gray in my family because her bubblegum sweet personality seems super contrived and she is eerily ageless. I’m betting she isn’t so nice behind closed doors.

I’m not really sure what to think here–this is clearly a vain woman and considering the fact that is preaching about loving yourself and your looks while her daughter with Billy Joel, Alexa, has had an eating disorder and got tons of plastic surgery and also attempted suicide at least once leads me to believe that Christie might be a bit of a “mommie dearest” type.

Loving the quote by Kaiser that was included up above. Isn’t that the truth. I don’t fit into the beauty standard by any means as a swarthy second generation Italian-American. I’m perfectly comfortable in my own skin now, but when I was growing up I struggled with not really understanding why no celebrities looked like I did. I’m just saying that this tiny standard of beauty that women like Christie belong to and tout can result in others finding the most minute flaw in themselves and obsessing over it, so it just seems a little cheap to have her dishing out advice on how to love ourselves. I fully believe that at least some of her looking amazing at her age is due to genetics because surgery can only go so far without making a person into a monster. Let’s be serious though. Christie has clearly been doing little tweaks and using professional-grade soaps and creams from dermatologists for decades. She has preserved herself which is perfectly fine, but she should acknowledge that.

    • Jayna says:

Her daughter only had a nose job. Stop with the tons of plastic surgery

      Christy on the other hand…
She looked younger than her age already, but then had a facelift, boob job, and eyes done when Alexa got her nose job.

It was noticeable how much tighter her face was and eyelids refreshed and boobs bigger.

  17. WTF says:

Wow. Did not expect to hate her so hard…

  18. My Two Cents says:

She is a poster girl for what’s wrong today. Too many place emphasis on looking youthful and thin more than they worry about being half way intelligent and knowing what’s going on outside their little make believe world.

    • Jayna says:

Christie is beautiful but I find her personality so bland and don’t find anything interesting in the way she speaks. I can’t describe it, but I find that she is beautiful and great figure but zero sex appeal. She used to be preppy but now she’s trying to look like a rocker’s girlfriend since she’s hooked up with Mellencamp.

  19. moot says:

“people are tired of being preached to by blonde, traditionally ‘beautiful’ women who have spent their entire professional careers profiting from their inclusion in society’s extremely narrow definition of beauty.”

Well, said, Kaiser. Never mind how many people have the time and money to spend that much time of their appearance. I get that to some people, this is incredibly important for social reasons, but the rest of us have other things we care more about. Like sleeping, in my case. I’d rather get an extra hour of sleep than have to get up and spend an hour apply products all over myself to make me look polished and magazine-cover ready. Never mind having to spend all the money to keep it up.

  20. april says:

Look at her hands compared to her face and it’s obvious all of the plastic surgery she has had done. Since she eats so well and exercises, wouldn’t her hands also look good?

She does look amazing, but I’m not happy that she wrote a beauty book at age 61 misleading women to think you can achieve her beauty success mostly naturally. She’s making money off of being dishonest. And if you don’t care what others think, Christie, why don’t you be honest in your beauty book?

Also, I’m surprised since she is so health conscious that she is dating John Mellancamp who is a smoker. I really doubt she and Mellancamp will last.

  21. Minty says:

The Daily Mail had a piece on her in which she described the various tweaks she’s gotten and what she recommends. She doesn’t hide it.
