Star: Leonardo DiCaprio worries that Johnny Depp will snatch his Oscar glory

wenn21072312

Star Magazine says that Leonardo DiCaprio is “hungry” for an Oscar this year. I would say that it’s more like he’s THIRSTY. Parched, in fact. The Revenant doesn’t even come out until Christmas, and I don’t think many people have even seen the complete film yet. But Leo’s place on the Best Actor shortlist is already being guaranteed. Many people believe that this is finally Leo’s year. The studio definitely wants to make it happen – they’ve hired “every awards consultant known to man” to massage this Oscar campaign. Leo has jettisoned the P-ssy Posse for now and he’s been showing up to events with his Serious Oscar Face on. But is Leo worried that someone else will snatch his Oscar this year? Perhaps.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp are in a gold rush – Oscar gold, that is. Each leading man is determined to outdo the other on Hollywood’s biggest night and walk away with the Best Actor trophy.

“Leo is so hungry for the Oscar that he can pratically taste it,” shares a spy. “He sees Johnny as his only real competition.”

Depp has said in interviews that he “doesn’t want to win one of those things ever,” but Leo isn’t buying Johnny’s nonchalance and Leo is viewing Depp as his main competition.

“Leo has been trashing Johnny’s flops, like The Lone Ranger and Mortdecai,” dishes the industry mole. “This goes all the way back to when they both starred in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which Leo feels he carried.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Of all the dudes getting Best Actor buzz, Leo is worried about Scarfy Depp? That seems… odd. Currently, Gold Derby has Leo barely overtaking Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs was critically acclaimed, although the film flopped at the box office and some people thought that Fassy was badly miscast. Still, I thought Fassy did a good job and if he gets an Oscar nom, I’ll be happy (although I doubt he’ll win, probably because he’ll refuse to campaign). Beyond Fassbender, Leo’s got to deal with Eddie Redmaybe (The Danish Girl), Matt Damon (The Martian), Will Smith (Concussion), and maybe Bryan Cranston in Trumbo. Out of that list… I’d say Matty D might be Leo’s biggest competition. Matty D will really campaign. Matty D has a non-famewhore wife and beautiful children. Leo has the P-ssy Posse and Jonah Hill. I mean… why worry about Scarfy Depp? Now, that being said, I would love nothing more than a Scarfy-versus-Leo grudge-match.

Matty D does not deserve an Oscar nom for The Martian.
Leo is a good actor, but every time he’s been nominated ( apart from maybe for Gilbert Grape, but he was nominated along side Ralph Fiennes, so who knows) he was nominated along side someone who did a better job that year.

I’ve only seen the trailer for Trumbo, but Bryan Cranston looks wonderful in it. I’m looking forward to seeing it, I love Dalton Trumbo ( Johnny Got His Gun is one of the best books I’ve ever read).

I heard Damon had one face expression throughout the film and another friend said he killed the life in it. So I skipped it.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@DS, who wrote: “I heard Damon had one face expression throughout the film and another friend said he killed the life in it. So I skipped it.”

Okay, but a 93% Fresh Critics rating (249 out of 268 critics rated it Fresh) and a 93% Fresh ‘Liked it!’ Audience Score from people who have seen the film and ‘liked’ it at “Rotten Tomatoes.” Aside from that, “The Martian” has currently grossed $213 million Domestically.

Considering the fact that Matt Damon is on the screen ‘by himself’ for at least 70% of the film, does it make sense that he has “one face expression through the film” and “kills the life in it?” Would word of mouth draw $213 million out of American audiences in this ‘high-priced’ movie going time if that were true?

If ever the success or failure of a film rested on the shoulders of a lead actor, it is “The Martian.”

      • Sarah (another one) says:

The Martian was Damon’s version of “Castaway.” He has to carry the entire film – or at least a good 75% of it – by himself. If someone doesn’t care for Matt Damon, then I can certainly see why they wouldn’t like it. To me who likes him ok but doesn’t love him, I thought he was fantastic.

As for the Oscar battle between Leo and Scarfy, how hilarious to watch 2 overweight, puffy, dirty, past their prime playboys fight it out. LOL!

      • ds says:

@Emma, I’m sorry my friends (also film makers) had different opinion from 93% of critics; but I believe it’s their right to have one. They must be jealous bi***es.

      • BTF says:

“As for the Oscar battle between Leo and Scarfy, how hilarious to watch 2 overweight, puffy, dirty, past their prime playboys fight it out. LOL!”

Overweight and past their prime? Lol. Neither is fat and both are some of the biggest and most beloved actors in the world, they’re similar in that regard.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@DS, who wrote: “@Emma, I’m sorry my friends (also film makers) had different opinion from 93% of critics; but I believe it’s their right to have one. They must be jealous bi***es.”

Well you certainly know them better than I, so if you say your friends are jealous bi***es, who am I to argue?

    • Holmes says:

Yeah, if Matt gets a nom for the Martian (much less wins), I quit. I really enjoyed the movie for what it was, which was a fun popcorn movie. It doesn’t belong in Oscar discussions.

      • Nic919 says:

I have seen Black Mass, Danish Girl and the Martian. While the Martian was a good movie, it wasn’t a performance on the same level as Redmayne in Danish Girl and Johnny Depp in Black Mass. Damon himself has been better in other movies.
I don’t know if Leo is any good in The Revenant, but based on what I have read, he is probably doing more than what Damon did, which was Castaway lite.
I would say that Redmayne is the biggest threat with a great performance in a movie with a timely topic.

    • seesittellsit says:

And don’t forget Redmayne’ “The Danish Girl” – just saw the trailers and he looks like he was phenomenal – it’s a shame he won last year for TOE because this looks like a more impressive performance. But between his win last year and it possibly being “Leo’s Year” I think Redmayne instead will pick up everything BUT the Oscar, although for sure he’ll be nominated for it. I don’t think Depp’s performance in Black Mass stands a chance. It was hammy and the makeup was awful. Black Mass was a big disappointment. So I’m betting on the three frontrunners being DiCaprio, Damon, and Redmayne.

      • BTF says:

“I don’t think Depp’s performance in Black Mass stands a chance. It was hammy and the makeup was awful. Black Mass was a big disappointment.”

Most critics and award voters disagree with you. Depp is already earning accolades for his performance, it’s generally considered outstanding and Oscar-worthy. Black Mass did better than expected critically and commercially.

    • Korra says:

Oh my god. Please let Matt Damon win over Leo. PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

      • pancake bacon says:

I’m with you, Korra! Matt Damon has been just as robbed as Leo for The Talented Mr Ripley alone, and the role in The Martian is a winning blend of technical achievement and cutting through the screen and reaching out to you at your movie seat.

    • Jellybean says:

I am not a huge Damon fan. I tend to find him a pleasant onscreen presence, but, with the exception of Good Will Hunting, he doesn’t illicit an emotional response in me. I did enjoy the Martian though. I loved the focus on science and problem solving and I now use ‘I am going to science the s**t out of this’ whenever I can. That said, I don’t think the film or Damon’s performance are oscar winning caliber, although they would be acceptable nomination fillers.

      • Lilacflowers says:

We’ve taken to calling staff meetings The Council of Elrond and shouting “I am Iron man!” when something goes really well.

      • misery chick says:

@ JELLYBEAN – I don’t know if this would interest you, but I was incredibly moved by Matty D in ‘We Bought A Zoo”. Yes, the movie got a bit sappy, but there’s a couple of scenes where I tear up every single time. Absolutely loved Elle Fanning too.

  2. als says:

I would love to see Bryan Cranston at the Oscars and a Damon – DiCaprio throwdown.

  3. Loulou says:

Black Mass was very overhyped for me. Scarfy did a decent job but nothing amazing. And his Boston accent fell into ridiculous at times.

    • Zayn says:

Nothing amazing? Really? The dinner scene alone is Oscar-worthy. And his accent was pretty good imo.

      • Loulou says:

Eh, I disagree. I feel like we’re so used to seeing Depp play weird and quirky that when he plays a straight drama role it’s deceivingly impressive. Just my opinion though.

      • Kitty says:

@LouLou I don’t think his performance is praised because it’s a “serious” one after a series of “weird” roles. It’s just a really great performance that deserves recognition. I saw it without having any other Depp performances in mind. It’s unlike anything he’s done before.

    • Lilacflowers says:

His accent, which was the same one he used in Blow, was all over the place but none of those places were the Southie projects. But it was not distractingly bad and it was not the worst in the film. His performance was very good.

  4. NewWester says:

I would like to see a movie about the life of Jack Nicolson. Leo is starting to look like Jack and that would be an interesting movie.

  5. NewWester says:

I would like to see a movie about the life of Jack Nicolson. Leo is starting to look like Jack and that would be an interesting movie.

    Sorry double post

  6. Liz says:

It’s such a weak year for lead actor that as long as the film gets good reviews, I think he will win the Oscar.

  7. Ankhel says:

Are these people really the best actors this year? Sure, Redmayne’s good and I can’t really remember who Cranston is, but still?

  8. Mimz says:

I’d take Leo over Depp’s sweaty/boozed up mess any day. And I do think Leo is extremely talented and he deserves an Oscar, he deserves MANY Oscars if you ask me. Few artists nowadays commit to the craft the way he does, and really I don’t care for his P*ssy posse, his model addiction (hell, at least he’s not binging on prostitutes and getting wasted/high on a regular basis), so what he does behind closed doors is not my concern. Even when I feel icky about his behavior, he comes and completely amazes me with his performances. I wish there were many more actors that could make me feel like that. Will Smith does, sometimes. I don’t really like Fassy, and I like Matt but I don’t know if he’s better than Leo. And Eddy RedMay(B)e? (Is this a typo on your post? because I love it!) is a great actor and the trailer for the Danish Girl really impressed me. But I do think some actors should consistently do great movies for a few years and deliver great performances to earn Oscars. That’s what sets Leo apart from many of the aforementioned actors.
Fassy whines about campaigning, Eddy does it but he’s “new-ish” in the game, Matt … I don’t know. I always like him in movies but I’m not always Amazed. And Johnny needs to make a few more great movies to convince me that he’s back to my personal “Great Actors” list.

    • Locke Lamora says:

“But I do think some actors should consistently do great movies for a few years and deliver great performances to earn Oscars.” – I completely disagree. Oscars should be given for the one performance the actor is nominated that year, and that performance only. I hate the practice of giving career Oscars, which is what regularly happenns.

I think Leo is a good actor, but not one of the best. Actually, in the few movies of Johnny’s I have seen where he isn’t in full Burton-gimmick mode, he moved me more than Leo. Leo tends to be somewhat mechanic ( with a few exceptions). I don’t care about their personal lives, if they’re not harming anyone, God bless.

      • Rhiley says:

I agree. Leo is good but not one of the best. He is extremely one dimensional, kind of like Brad Pitt, who likely will never win an Oscar for his acting (although, I do think he was really great in Benjamin Button and that will always be one of my favorite movies).

      • Mimz says:

To each their own, Leo blew me away in many movies, and he moved me. I respect your opinion, but to me he is great.
Now about giving oscars to great movies each year, I agree to a certain extent, as I do not believe for a second that JLaw deserved her SLP Oscar. That movie was good, but not great. Oscars are about popularity.
No comparison to Brad Pitt. Brad is one dimensional. And slightly boring. You could pay me and I wouldn’t watch his 3million war movies. And yet, I agree that Benjamin Button was amazing.

      • EN says:

Who is the best then? Leo was great in everything he has ever done and I am not a fan of his.
Who is another actor who has done as much and was equally good in every single movie?
Leo deserved an Oscar 10 years ago already.

      • frisbee says:

@ EN – Who is the best then? Daniel Day Lewis.

      • SusanneToo says:

@EN. Although I don’t care for all his movies, Joaquin Phoenix gives consistently excellent performances. And I like his disappearing act when not working. Or even when working, as he does almost no press, just letting the performance speak for itself.

      • EN says:

I agree on Joaquin, he is one of my favorites. He can do know wrong in my book. ))
I guess I agree on DDL as well but he is not on my radar as he works like once in 5 years?
I was thinking of actors currently on the scene.
Still, Leo is in the same league with them. Thus, deserves an Oscar.

      • Locke Lamora says:

God, no, Leo is by no means in the same league with DDL and Joaquin.
As I said, every time Leo was nominated ( apart from Gilbert Grape) he was nominated along side better performances. And Oscars are not career achievement awards.

    • MrsBPitt says:

OMG, Mimz, it’s like you read my mind!!! I agree with everything you said! Matt D. is usually good, but never amazing! Eddie R. looks like he is very good in The Danish Girl, but he just won last year. Johnny Depp, has made terrible movies the past few years, and been terrible in them…Black Mass was ok, but nothing special…Will Smith, to me, is like Damon….usually good, never GREAT!!! Leo has been consistently great, year after year! The Wolf of Wall Street, Inception, Django Unchained, The Aviator, The Departed, Titanic, and of course, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, in which he should have won the Oscar that year…he was AMAZING in WEGG…and as for his personal life…I could care less…he isn’t married, he doesn’t have kids, he’s not stumbling around drunk…he is enjoying his very, very lucky life! Who can blame him! I haven’t seen Revenant yet, of course…but he does look impressive in the trailer…I hope it’s Leo’s year!!!!

      • Manjit says:

The Wolf of Wall Sheet was the biggest pile of misogynistic poo I’ve had the misfortune of seeing.

      • Pablo says:

The Wolf of Wall Street was about a guy who was super misogynistic. That doesn’t mean the movie is. The main character and his friends were portrayed as major douches, not role models.

      • MrsBPitt says:

oops…Mimz…now, I must disagree with you….My husband (in my dreams) Brad PItt is an awesomely, talented, sexy, handsome, sexy, humanitarian, sexy, wonderful, sexy….well, I could go on and on…..

      • BrandyAlexander says:

If you read the Wolf of Wall Street book, you would realize how terrible that movie was, and how bad Leo was in it. There was only 1 scene in it, which I thought his acting shone. The rest was a comic mockery. And I hated the guy who wrote it/it is based on, and finished the book feeling absolutely disgusted, but the movie was 100x’s worse!

    • Naya says:

I’d give it to Johnny (who really should have won it earlier in his career) before I give it to coke bloat Di Caprio. I think he is an ok actor, not phenomenol and his scummy persona is doing him no favors either. He’ll probably score one some day but I enjoy his sweaty Oscar desparation too much to give him one now.

    • Zayn says:

If Depp won, it would be for his incredible performance in Black Mass, not his personal life/appearance and the movies he’s made the past few years, which are irrelevant. He doesn’t have to prove himself any more. He’s proved that he is as talented as ever in BM.

And DiCaprio is a sweaty/boozed up sweaty mess, too so this is funny.

    • BTF says:

“I’d take Leo over Depp’s sweaty/boozed up mess any day.”

What if Depp’s performance is actually better than Leo’s yet to be seen performance?

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Dicaprio has that argument that he and everybody in the Revenant did suffer for their movie.

After all I have heard of the Revenant I think there is a good chance Leo might get an Oscar for it. Allegedly during the test screenings: there is no dialogue for 30 or 40 minutes but nobody found that odd. Apparently it is masterfully told.

      • Alexandra says:

Yeah, but if you are physically suffering during your performance, is this still acting? Is it acting when you’re reacting to your environment as a person, instead of just immersing yourself as the character? This is something I’m wondering, because they are playing that card of suffering a living hell during the shooting and I feel that it might take away from the actual performance. That being said, unpopular opinion, but to me Leo isn’t that great of an actor to me. He blew me away in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Django Unchained, which was his most laid-back and all-in performance. However, other than that, he’s mostly playing it safe and is sometimes too stiff for my taste. I have a problem with The Revenant though that Leo is NEVER changing the tone of his voice. Take Tom Hardy, for instance. He always models his voice after his characters, but Leo is just using the same tone over and over again. I feel like his boyish voice doesn’t match the rough around the edges character he’s playing. And honestly at this point, Depp IS his toughest competitor in the race, even if CB doesn’t want to acknowledge it. This is the state of the race.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ Alexandra

I am sorry to be that direct but you grab something out of thin air.
The suffering was necessary for the movie as it was a consequence of using the natural daylight and the cold and the original landscape and the long shot. Yes, this kind of suffering is part of the acting performance because you only get these great landscapes in winter if you film in that great land in winter. And for an actor to do decent acting under such conditions is certainly very hard.

Natalie Portman won an Oscar for Black Swan because she kept telling people how much she suffered e.g. how much she trained ballet. Then people found out she actually had a ballet double who would do the most difficult parts for her. And she had some seriously good ballet teachers. But no teacher will help you under such conditions as in filming the Revenant.

I think Leo’s voice is not as versatile as that of other actors. But he does change it to fit the character and the scene. He does accents. He has a great range from whispering to conversation (Blood Diamond, at bar with jennifer conelly) to cooky talk (Catch Me if…) to serious talk (Wolf oWS, his interviews) to expressing emotions (Body of Lies, torture scene) to shouting insanely (Departed, with psychologist). And his narrations in films are great, too (11th hour).
You haven’t seen the Revenant yet nevertheless you judge Leo’s voice in it?

      • Alexandra says:

        @Pondering thoughts

I forgot mentioning Shutter Island which I think was an underrated performance. I know people were all about Inception at that time, but I found Shutter Island to be the superior one.

It was a legitimate question I had. How much of an acting job is it, when you have all the tools there to make it convincing (nature being a b*tch, working under harsh conditions, sleeping in an animal’s carcass, etc.) vs. a restrained performance where you have to work your magic in a basic setting? Sure, it takes a committed crew to work under the conditions of The Revenant shooting, but I feel that working in challenging conditions might ironically make your job as an actor actually less challenging, because it’s the actor immersing in the environment rather than the actor immersing into his character. But what do I know?

Actually, even if you take the ballet scenes away from Black Swan, I believe that Natalie Portman’s performance is still effective and gripping in itself. And while they definitely made a fuzz out of the ballet scenes, even if she would have been the one suffering in training, the suffering isn’t part of the performance, but the performance is a consequence of the previous suffering, while in The Revenant they were suffering AS THEY WERE SHOOTING the movie and it was something they all put in their performances.

Well, I have seen the trailers, where he definitely speaks and I’ve seen his character, so while it’s not enough to judge an entire performance, it is to give me an idea about his voice, which always sounds the same to me and in this context, I feel like it doesn’t fit the profile of the character. I’ll see it and make my final judgement on the film as a whole; Alejandro is always blowing my mind with his films and they leave me either a mess or in a state of bewilderment. That bear attack will be brutal. I might be appreciative of Leo’s performance though and it will probably help the fact that it’s a ‘quiet’ movie, without too much dialogue.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ Alexandra

Every setting is supposed to support the actors performance. Even when the setting is kind of “opposed” to the actors part then this creates a very interesting tension, too. As a whole that is a ridiculous point.

Natalie Portman did suffer while she filmed the movie because she trained ballet before and during the filming. And yes, in “Black Swan” the suffering of the protagonist due to injuries due to hard ballet training is part of the performance as well. The protagonist kind of “dies” for her ballet performance. Portman herself suffered during the gruelling ballet training. And Portman’s character suffers both from injuries due to training as well as “injuries” due to psychological stress or disorder. So Portman/Black Swan and Dicaprio/Revenant are somewhat comparable in reference to “suffering”: both the actors and the movie characters suffered.

And yes, even if you take the cold away from “the Revenant” then Dicaprio’s performance is still gripping and effective – based on the trailer. Did you see him crawl out of the grave? Did you see him when his son got killed?

    • Bridget says:

Leo is consistently good but not great. The years that he’s been nominated and lost someone legitimately much better walked away with the trophy. I don’t care for his personal life, but more than that I think his persona has trickled down into his work. He strikes me as someone that is so used to being a superstar and is so used to doors flinging themselves open in his presence that it’s like he doesn’t have the skills to really work a room. He is usually the person being wooed, and you can tell.

  9. Boxy Lady says:

What about Tom Hardy? He’s Leo’s costar in The Revenant plus he has that film where he’s playing both of the Kray brothers.

    • Naya says:

Agree, Hardy should be on that list for Legend. And Idris as well for Beasts of No Nation

Edit: Just remembered Idris probably supporting cast.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Hardy went too far into caricatures with the Kray brothers, IMO. Idris should be nominated, definitely. But isn’t Beasts of No Nation a TV movie or something like that?

      • Naya says:

Thats what I thought, until I watched the Krays interviews. Hardy was actually spot on with both guys.

No, Beasts of No Nation is not a TV movie, lol. Netflix is just the newer, smarter distribution model now. The critic and audience buzz for Beasts was so good, its getting a big screen premier to make it eligible for award seasons. Although, I’m pretty sure that the rules will soon be changed to allow direct entry for digitally streamed movies. Most young viewers reserve the Theatre experience for blockbuster 3D movies anyway and would rather watch serious film in the comfort of their home.

      • Nic919 says:

Idris is being pushed as supporting actor. Having seen Beasts of No Nation, he is good but not the main focus of the movie, which is about the boy.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Hardy will be up for supporting for “The Revenant”, not lead.

  10. Danielle says:

Boy fight! I doubt this story is true, but hope it is, because its pretty funny.

    • Shambles says:

IKR? At least they’re pitting the boys against each other now, too. All I see is an amusing story about the two poster-boys for “how to murder every inch of hotness left in your body.”

      • SusanneToo says:

        So true, so sad.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Actually I find neither that disgusting if you consider that they are 40-something. There are a lot of 40-something-ers who are far far less hot.

Oh, and not everybody is genetically as blessed as Brad Pitt.

And yes, it might be amusing to watch if they are pitted against each other. Though I believe both have enough experience with the media so they won’t start an open war of mud-slinging.

As for their private lives: no prostitute scandals and no oopsie-baby-its-not-mine stories. No domestic violence. Depp apparently has (had ?) a difficult relationship with liquour. Dicaprio is into ambitious barely-legals. But that ain’t illegal nor should it affect the way their art is judged.
Though it does make them sleazy in my opinion.

      • Alexandra says:

Depp’s 52 already and apart from acting like a middle-aged man cliche with the Amber rebound, he’s a pretty decent man. I mean, that was a big deal and I kinda hated him for that, but he could have done worse. He’s been struggling with alcoholism for years and for the past ones, it has been getting more serious, but I hope he can sober himself up and stay that way. He’s been looking healthier lately.

  11. anne_000 says:

I haven’t seen any of the movies, only some of the trailers, but I’m a sucker for Cranston and biopics, and I think he’s the best actor overall of those mentioned in this article.

    • Rhiley says:

I agree. He has a JK Simmons quality that I think the Academy loves so with the right balance of people seeing the film Trumbo, critical support, and some light campaigning on Cranston’s part, he could be the winner.

      • Jane says:

His movie didn’t get very good reviews. He’s out of race, he’s not winning anything.

      • hmph says:

Did he get good reviews for his performance? Because that’s what matters, not whether or not the movie itself was any good.
Marion Cotillard won for her performance as Edith Piaf but the movie la vie en rose was shite.

    • Nic919 says:

I saw Trumbo and while Cranston is good, the movie itself is a mixed bag and so his performance may get lost in the shuffle. It is viewed as a bit too comedic for a blacklist story.

  12. Rhiley says:

I don’t think Leo is going to win the Oscar this year, or any year for that matter. I think he and Depp are going to cancel each other out. I am not so sure the Academy likes it when actors talk about the difficulty of a shoot, and thus far, that is what Leo’s campaign has been, him talking about how difficult it was and how cold it was and how he put everything into it. Furthermore, the movie looks more like a video game and less like an actual movie, so I wonder if perhaps it is going to be a little too violent for a December opening. We’ll see. I agree, though, that the field of Oscar contenders this year just isn’t there so it really is anyone of these guys’ statute.

  13. CornyBlue says:

The whole of this Oscar talk with will this white guy get it or the other white guy get it and actual people fighting over it is the tangible version of the hashtag #FirstWorldProblems.

  14. Maya says:

I think Leo will be massively disappointed if he doesn’t win next year.

He is pulling all the stops and is even campaigning this time around so it will be a massive blow for him if he doesn’t win.

  15. Nancy says:

There are a few actors that never get recognized with an Oscar, or if they do, late in their career…..Pacino and Paul Newman come to mind. Leo will get one eventually or if not, a lifetime achievement award when he’s an old guy.

  16. Elsa says:

Depp was excellent in Black Mass. And Smith is out of the race actually. Leo is a great actor but he seems so thirsty for an Oscar that it’d be funny if he doesn’t win this year. Current lineup is Dicaprio, Fassbender,Redmayne, Damon, Depp at most sites. Michael Caine and Tom Hanks are serious contenders though. No Will Smith.

    • EN says:

I think Tom Hanks will take one of the spots .
It is shaping up to be an old timers Oscars if we get Hanks, Depp and DiCaprio nominated. That will be fun.

I heard that Sir Ian is also campaigning for Mr. Holmes.

      • Holmes says:

I hope that’s true. I loved Mr. Holmes. Imho Sir Ian definitely deserves to be included in the awards discussion.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, Sir Ian is definitely campaigning. Mr. Holmes is now available for streaming and he’s promoting that as much as he did the actual release. And it is a nice performance but a long shot.

  17. Honeybubble says:

I hope Leo wins, he’s long overdue an Oscar. He’s consistently great and obviously picks movies because he wants to play the characters and puts every bit of effort into it, he doesn’t phone in performances for big money like most actors do. He’s the one actor who I look forward to seeing what he does next. I like Matt Damon too, not as much as Leo though.

  18. Minxx says:

I would love to see Leo’s face if someone snatches “his” Oscar yet again. He’s a good actor, soemetimes very good (Django) but I never forget it’s Leo playing a character. I’d love to give it to anyone but him. I know it’ s not fair but he’s just too thirsty – can’t stand it. I don’t think it’s going to be Johnny, he said he doesn’t want to win. I think it’s going to be a surprise.

  19. lila fowler says:

The Revenant just had a screening last night and people were rapturous. Oscars for everyone including Leo and Tom Hardy.

  20. Skins says:

It seems everytime somebody plays a real life character they are declared an Oscar contender. Being made up to look like somebody and imitating their mannerisms is not great acting IMO. I think Leo is way more deserving than Jack Sparrow

    • Zayn says:

You have not seen Leo’s performance yet.. And have you seen Black Mass? “Jack Sparrow” did a great job in it.

  21. MonicaQ says:

This man just needs to have a son named Oscar so he can finally quit.

  22. Zayn says:

Rooting for Johnny. Adored Black Mass.

  23. jessia says:

I think its high time Depp got an Oscar, Sorry but he is long overdue for one . Leo ehhh… he can wait a few more years can’t he?

  24. Squiggisbig says:

I actually wonder if this was a story fed to the tabloids by johnny’s people. I would think Matt or maybe Redmayne/smith are bigger conpetition. Fassy won’t campaign. Although perhaps Leo feels that Matt is no competition because of all of his mattsplaining controversy from a few months ago.

I think this is a very weak field this year which should help Leo as he was basically rightfully looked over in the last, with the possible exception of his what’s eating Gilbert Grape loss. He’s definitely a consistently entertaining actor but he’s no Daniel Day-Lewis. Also a few people have mentioned that his personal life doesn’t matter and of course it doesn’t except that this is basically a popularity contest and literally every best actor winner since 2006 was married at the time they won (I can’t remember what month Redmayne got married but it was in 2014…so close enough).

    • jessia says:

The Danish Girl got terrible reviews and Redmaynes performance was nothing to speak of. This is def Depps year. I think Leo will be nomiated too.

    • Jane says:

“I would think Matt or maybe Redmayne/smith are bigger conpetition.”

      They are not.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Depp has three previous best actor nominations. He has always reached out and maintained good relationships with older co-stars. Some gone like Brando, Christopher Lee, Susan Tyrell, whose medical bills he paid, and some still here like Judi Dench and Martin Landau and they and their friends are the voters. Other co-stars like him. Black Mass is a comeback performance of sorts and it is a good performance, which is also very different from the roles he received nods for before. Depp, at this point, is a strong contender.

Also the reunion with Benny & Joon co-star Julianne Moore at the podium would be sweet

      • Alexandra says:

Benny & Joon is such a lovely movie! The scene where they are watching that B Horror Movie featuring Julianne’s character always gets me, hahaha.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The cast of that little movie, all of whom were pretty much unknown at the time, was phenomenal. A real treasure trove of character actors. Yes, Julianne’s B-Horror Movie scene is fantastic. And when he swings by her hospital room window – that scene kills me.

      • Alexandra says:

Or when he’s doing the bread roll dance like Chaplin in ‘Gold Rush’. Johnny’s entire performance is based of legends of the silent era, like Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. The window scene is so damn charming – and it almost kills him too. Literally :D.

  25. Jane says:

Fassbender and Redmayne are not really stronger contenders than Depp. He is such a huge star and and a certified icon, he could campaign hard and take it away. It would be well-deserved. Loved him in Black Mass.

    • EN says:

I think Redmayne will be nominated. But he is not getting a second Oscar in a row.
I have a feeling that Fassbender won’t be nominated because he doesn’t campaign enough. Why would anyone want to invest in him if he is not going to give it his all?
And for what he would be nominated – Macbeth? I saw a trailer and Ididn’t see Oscar level acting in there. Granted, of course, it is only a trailer.

I think the real competition is Depp and Hanks.

    • Marianne says:

Johnny may have the bigger star power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything at the oscars. The golden globes sure. Johnny has more crap under his belt now than good.

      • Jane says:

Well, his great performance means a lot. His classics still outweigh the few flops he’s had recently. He’s being considered for Black Mass, not Mortdecai. I don’t see what his past few movies have to do with anything.

  26. Lilacflowers says:

I think I’ll reserve judgment on who deserves a best actor nomination until I’ve seen Trumbo, The Danish Girl, Youth, Legend, and The Revenant, and a few other films. I don’t understand how people can say someone deserves an award without having seen the performance and the competition.

As for Leo, I think he needs to lighten up about his career choices and stop trying for an Oscar with every film. Do a rom com. I’m still traumatized by his J Edgar Hoover and The Wolf of Wall Street was one of the most misogynistic pieces of garbage I have ever sat through – all 3 hours of it.

    • Marianne says:

Well Wolf of Wall Street was…kind of a comedy. I feel like that’s the closest Leo has gotten.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The qualude/staircase scene was hilarious and also the only part of the movie that was bearable to me. He CAN do comedy. He did comedy long ago in his career but over the past decade, he seems to just want to go for “serious actor” Oscar-baity roles. He should do some more comedies.

And for anyone who says that film was not misogynistic; there was no real comeuppance for the way he treated women, including two wives, one of whom he raped – yes, that’s the character part, I know, but still AND Jonah Hill gets to stay fully clothed and use a prosthetic penis (not that I want to see Jonah Hill naked) while Margot Robbie has to go full frontal nude. And that’s not going into all the other scenes with naked women and fully clothed men.

  27. Holmes says:

Cool, so it’s going to be the battle of bloated messes who were formerly hot (though k never thought Leo was).

  28. knower says:

I’m just going to say it: I don’t think Leo takes ANY creative risks and that is why he has not won an oscar.

    the end.

  29. Tessd says:

Leo will get the Life Time Achievement award, I’m certain of that.

As much as I liked The Martian how can you compare Matt’s work with Leo and Eddie’s acting acrobatics?

But then again, when was the Oscar given out for the best acting performance?

    • guest says:

Thanks. Totally agree with you. Such a pity. So many great actors who were very very good in movies but never got the recognition.

  30. MND says:

I generally don’t care about the Oscars but I hope Leo wins for no another reason than it’ll piss a lot people off.

OMG! I finally understand what the Oscars are all about.

  31. guest says:

Damon for an Oscar? For what??? The Martian? Seriously? I really really hope that people are joking. I mean, the Oscar became a joke during the past years, but i swear to God, if Damon gets nominated for a movie like this one, I will never watch the Oscars again. I like Damon, he seems to be a great actor and guy but please, once in a while people should get nominated for their acting skills. Acting. Which means no suffering bodywise or whatever. I have the feeling that you just have to lose or gain weight, walk around like a homeless guy or whatever, and you get your Oscar. Tadaaaa. Acting wise I would give it to Fassbender or Redmayne (who cares if he won it last year? if he is that good, he should get it again) and Fassbender got very good reviews for his acting in Jobs. And like Laurence Olivier once said: Why don’t you just try acting? It still is unbelievable for me that Fassbender did not get one for 12 years a slave. He was brilliant. I bloody hated him in that movie. As for Leo. I honestly do not understand how people can say that he is only a decent actor. He is just awesome and the best of his generation. Just have not seen his new movie yet. So I will have to wait.

  32. Dara says:

I’ve only seen a preview for the Revenant, but I was underwhelmed to be honest. It looked dark (both actually and metaphorically), ugly, bleak and seemed like every character was morally compromised – which probably means critics and Academy voters will be orgasmic over it and it will be nominated for everything. But it won’t get my money.

Spotlight is my current favorite, both in acting and story. It’s a true ensemble, and every actor in the cast hits it out of the park, but since none of the roles are super-showy when it comes to actor-ly technique all of them might be long-shots for any nominations. I can see Michael Keaton or Mark Ruffalo perhaps getting nods in the supporting category though.

I haven’t seen Room yet but since Brie Larson seems like a lock for a Best Actress nom, does Jacob Tremblay have a shot at anything?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Jacob Tremblay is astounding to the point of being mind-blowing and, to me, his performance was even stronger than hers and she is very good. Joan Allen is also very good.

  33. Pineapple says:

I hate those psycho-pathkillers-are-so-interesting-and-complex films, so I’ll root for Leo. Why do people watch those gangster films and think they’re so deep and reflect reality? Not mine, thanks. Leo’s a great actor. Johnny specialises in eccentrics and crazies only.

    • Jane says:

You need to see Johnny in Finding Neverland, Donnie Brasco, Blow, Public Enemies, Arizona Dream, and Chocolat, etc. He is versatile and good at playing roles “normal” roles.

  34. Mollie White says:

That was hilarious! Very well written!

  35. kate says:

I think Depp actually has a good chance this year. Hanks will probably be nominated, but won’t win. I don’t think The Danish Girl is a good enough film to get Redmayne a second Oscar in as many years. Fassbender’s film bombed and while it was a good performance, it was also one of his weakest. Smith’s film doesn’t look great, and he’s reaching Cruise levels of Scientology nuttiness which hurts his chances. Trumbo sucked, so I don’t see Cranston getting a nom.

Ignoring the wild cards, that leaves Damon, Depp and DiCaprio. If it comes down to who voters like more, that’s Damon. If The Revenant isn’t Leo’s best work and it comes down to a career achievement award, Depp’s far more overdue. If he pulls himself together a bit, plays the game a little, he could easily take it.

  36. Sid says:

I really don’t want Leo to win. Anybody else please!
