Karlie Kloss covers WSJ Mag: ‘I want to be doing my day job for a very long time’

23-year-old über hyphenate – model/entrepreneur/philanthropist – Karlie Kloss is featured in the upcoming holiday issue of WSJ. Magazine. The shoot took place at Elon Musk’s Space X rocket manufacturing facility in California. Karlie shows her patriotic side in red, white and blue fashions, posing with rocket technology like the Dragon spacecraft, which will eventually carry passengers into space.

Karlie, who turned heads in a metallic Chanel dress at the British Fashion Awards on Monday, posted a behind the scenes video from the shoot on her YouTube channel. She also posted the cover photo to her Instagram account with the caption “This was the coolest. Ever.”

Karlie definitely keeps herself busy. In addition to being the Brand Ambassador for L’Oreal Paris, Karlie has also been signed to endorse 12 brands in 2015 including include Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, and Marc Fisher. She talked about her ambition and more with WSJ Magazine:

On the paparazzi: “There’s no getting used to that.”

Her modeling career: “I’ve had a firsthand education from the greats, whether it be seeing [photographer] Steven Meisel set his lights or having Oscar de la Renta drape a gown on my body.”

Her long-term ambitions: “I want to be doing my day job for a very long time. But I also want to grow businesses and make a meaningful impact.”

[From WSJ. Magazine]

To her credit, Karlie is working hard to make a difference. Not only did she start the charitable organization Karlie’s Kookies, benefiting FEED and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (which is why a tin of these healthier cookies costs $25…ouch.), she also paired with the Flatiron School in Manhattan to offer a scholarship, #KodeWithKarlie. The scholarship, which was launched to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM, gave 21 recipients free tuition at Flatiron to take the same coding classes Karlie took last year.

Wow. Talk about having a back-up plan. I can’t even keep one full-time job. You can’t help but admire Karlie (even if I am slightly jealous about her accomplishments at such a young age). She definitely puts the “model” in “role model.”

I find models confusing. They all look the same to me? Fun story: I was in a train going from New York to the Hudson Valley, and looking for Wifi I see “Karlie’s Iphone” on the screen. Two seconds later, mile-long legs walk down the corridor, carrying Karlie herself- looking like a very tall college girl. So normal looking. Except for the miles of leg.

    • Naddie says:

Tell me about it. I once dared to watch them on the catwalk and ended up scared, because they all looked like clones.
But you see, she might look normal in New York, but where I live she’d be worshipped. Yeah, racism.

  2. Bishg says:

I like Karlie. I follow her YouTube channel and she seems like a genuine person.
I hope she doesn’t drop out of NYU and keeps up with the amazing work she’s been doing.

    • Loulou says:

I feel pretty basic admitting this, but I like her too. She seems nice and I like that her interests go past just modeling. And I think more young starlets should promote going to school and learning code.

  3. Saphana says:

Ambition is one thing, being born white and beautiful is such a huge advantage its not even funny. she wouldnt be where she is based only on her ambition. i mean we live in a world where people get awards for looking good.

    • INeedANap says:

But she’s doing the right thing with her privilege — helping others who don’t have the same. Props to her for using what she was to give the rest of us a leg up.

  4. Allie says:

I have nothing against Karlie, but this was so boring. She is so boring. And it’s not hard to become all of those things when you’re rich and have connections. Pretty people have such an advantage in life.

    • Saphana says:

exactly, she cant be a role model for anyone because she has all she has from outside factors. its not like she had a great business idea and is mad succesful even at a young age because of that. no all her opportunities come from her looks.
role models should be people who worked hard and/or are smart.

      • Jay says:

But how do you know she hasn’t worked hard/is smart? Being pretty opens doors for sure, but I think it takes more than that to have career longevity. Guess we’ll see!

  5. Little Darling says:

She used to annoy the heck out of me…something a little eager beaver that was unappealing. And she didn’t seem very bright.

BUT she’s winning a soft spot with her whole young girl coding to empowerment angle. Damn her for making me change my hardened heart!!

    • Val says:

Same here! I never liked her, and I don’t think she’s particularly beautiful.. plus I hated her in the VS fashion shows.

BUT, she’s growing on me and now I’m more ambivalent towards her… she seems aight.

  6. Jbean says:

Or you could say “She puts the ‘role’ in ‘role model'” (just a thought).

  7. OrigialTessa says:

I randomly flipped through an InStyle recently and she was literally in every other add. She’s HUGE right now, probably the biggest model in the world. It’s remarkable how much more work she gets than other models. She’s cornered almost half the market.

    • teacakes says:

She’s been huge for 8 years now, which is astonishing considering that her rise happened before instagram etc were a thing and that most models (those without famous relatives_ were lucky if their It status lasted more than a few seasons.

  8. teacakes says:

You know, I used to think she was plain and nothing much to look at, but that changed after actually seeing her on the runway/seeing some of her editorials. She’s not as gorgeous as Christy Turlington or as striking as Gisele, but on her, that plainness actually translates to a surprising level of versatility as a model – she looks equally at home in an Express catalog as she does modelling Dior (this was Galliano-era Dior, btw). This doesn’t happen with every plain model, but she really does change her vibe according to the shoot, instead of being flat and bland throughout like some.

It helps that she actually appears to have some life behind her eyes, because a vapid soul usually translates to bland, samey shots and trust me, those are NOT a pleasure to see in my Vogue/Harper’s/Elle etc editorials! Dead eyes just make me cringe.

  9. Happy21 says:

And people say Kendall Jenner is not model material, besides being a good person I do not get the appeal of this one – at all!

    • teacakes says:

Sorry, but that bland robot Jenner girl isn’t even close to model material and would be nowhere near a high-fashion runway if Kanye hadn’t married Kim and promoted the sh-t out of that family to the high fashion world. Karlie has an expressive face, that’s one thing KJ has yet to show.

  10. Salty says:

She comes across as a bit flakey. She needs a better vocab. And I don’t find her that attractive, though she has a great body for the catwalk.

  11. minarets says:

“Karlie shows her patriotic side in red, white and blue fashions. . . .”
“Karlie, who turned heads in a metallic Chanel dress at the British Fashion Awards on Monday,”

Is this gossip or an ad/breathless celeb coverage? A lot of Corey’s posts sound like this… Where’s the objectivity?

  12. It’s great that you are getting thoughts from this post as well as from our dialogue made at this time.
