Ricky Gervais is gearing up to host the Golden Globes: excited or meh?

Los Angeles Special Screening and Q&A of Netflix new series 'Derek'

Ricky Gervais is hosting the Golden Globes on NBC for his fourth time this coming Sunday, which makes me happy. He hosted the Globes from 2010-2012 and is returning after three very successful years of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey doing host duty. How did the discussion get back to Ricky doing the Globes? I am sure it had to do with ratings, maybe sadism was a catalyst, I don’t know. Ricky claims he turned them down at first. I am an award show junky so I would watch were it hosted by a sleeping duck, but I am still optimistic. The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Ricky recently and it’s a good read. The whole article is here. Below are a few highlights:

NBC is the only broadcast network with zero nominations this year.
Yeah, well, I’m surprised they did that well. That’s a joke, don’t print that!

Is it true that you were the one who brought John Oliver to Jon Stewart’s attention for The Daily Show?
Yeah, I think my input has probably been greatly exaggerated. I don’t think I had any influence other than Jon asking me if someone might fit in.

You carry a pint of beer onstage at the Globes. Do you bring that yourself or does the Beverly Hilton provide it?
I think it’s a half. I don’t think it’s a full pint. I just keep having them top it off backstage. They provide my beer for me. I do love the idea of me turning up with a six pack, like I’m having a barbecue. Shorts, six pack, and then it’s straight out on stage. That’s sort of what I want to be like. I don’t like the fuss. I don’t want rehearsals, I don’t sit down and have a team of writers. I come up with ideas as I go along — if they’re good enough I remember them, and then I go out there and do it.

Have you looked at the nominations this year? Are you rooting for anything?
No, I haven’t seen a lot of films. The first film I’ve seen and I absolutely love was Black Mass.

Johnny Depp was snubbed, actually.
Wait, they nominated The Tourist but not this one? What’s going on!?

You’ve never done any musical numbers or skits. Why?
Who wants to see that? Who wants to see someone showing me they can sing and dance? I don’t care. Tell me a joke.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

How quickly he tap dances away from that last question about musical numbers. There is nothing Ricky wants to avoid more than discussing his former over-moussed, skinny tie wearing Seona Dancing days. Bitter Heart, Ricky?

If I am being honest, I love Ricky. I didn’t always; I disliked The Office (his) and held it against him. Then I watched Extras and fell in the kind of love that greatly obfuscates my view of what is good and rational (this happens all the time, just fyi). I understand fully that Ricky lives so far up his own @$$ he pays his colon rent but I generally find him funny. I hope Ricky is on his game not just cruel like his last stint in 2012. In a year that offers bear violation and a US election as material, he should have enough topical material to avoid alienating the entire room. Why is Stephen Merchant not co-hosting with him? Couldn’t you just see Stephen slowly slide his hand over Ricky’s mouth when he is the only one laughing at his jokes? I also want to see what Jane Fallon is wearing, I usually dig her red carpet style.

I think they bought him back because most of the actors nominated are not huge names and they need someone to pull in the audience to get interest up.

This is not about talented actors and such. But BO wise most of these films didn’t hit a bit audience. So they need something.

I DON’T like him and don’t think he is nearly as funny as he things he is. Especially since he spends most of his time laughing at his own jokes.

    • Fallon says:

I loved him in Extras, because it was basically about him becoming an a-hole and then realizing he’d become one.

But I agree, I don’t always find his humor at the Globes to be good. I think it’s because he’s confined to the pre-written jokes, so they don’t flow naturally. Also, he usually seems like he would rather be anywhere else.

  2. Betti says:

I can’t stand him, he’s really not funny and his head is so far up his own ass am sure he can see what he had for breakfast. The Office is the only thing he’s done that i find remotely amusing.

    Hollywood you can keep him.

    • La La Land says:

He’s the worse comedic wannabe next to Jon Hamm … but at least Jon Hamm’s image isn’t that infused with comedy as this gross trollop. I’ve never understood the allure of this guy in film, series, or any part of media.

Also, I seriously doubt RG ever had the talent to come up with a story idea for the Office or anything of the like. He must have been more of an investor and ‘Ben Afflecked’ some of the premise of the British version.

disclaimer: Ben Affleck never was the main writer of Good Will Hunting .. it was that other guy, Matt Damien–duh. Affleck just knew more folks in the biz while he was trying to become a seasoned actor.

  3. ell says:

same. i hated the office with a burning passion (still do), but extras was just brilliant. generally i like him. he has moments in which i can’t stand him, but overall i think he’s very funny.

  4. Dorothy#1 says:

    love him!! I’m really excited.

Anyone watch An Idiot Abroad? So funny! Ricky is a genius. 🙂

    • Melly says:

I loved Idiot Abroad and The Ricky Gervais Show. I follow Ricky on Twitter and he is consistently funny. I will always be a fan of Mr. Gervais!

    • Sarah01 says:

      Totally agree!

    • Belle says:

Love Ricky and I adore Karl! The Idiot Abroad series are the best thing TV has produced in a long, loooooong time.

I never watch award shows, but with Ricky hosting I will. He’s funny & smart and has no fear of the giant egos of Hollywood. It’s gonna be a right laugh!

      • Dorothy#1 says:

Omg Karl is awesome!! Plus the episods are re-watchable!! I follow Ricky and Stephan too. They make my life happier.

      • Shannon1972 says:

Karl completely flipping out over the faulty jet pack, while in a canal in Venice, makes me laugh every time I think of it. After the somewhat odd Venetian costume party (which Karl DESPISED), that was just the icing on the cake of his trip.
That show was genius…and you’re right, it holds up to multiple watchings.

  5. Aussie girl says:

I understand fully that Ricky lives so far up his own @$$ he pays his colon rent. Gold!!! Nice one Hecate.

  6. Nancy says:

He is a funny snarky guy. He keeps those pompous folks dressed in their finery at the edge of their seats hoping he won’t say their name. Let them squirm, because these award shows are so long and boring, we need someone like him to keep us awake.

    • pinetree13 says:

I fully agree. Him making fun of celebrities that actually get offended because they are normally surrounded by brown-nosers and yes-men 24/7 is the best part!!!! Please Ricky, alienate everyone in the room for my amusement!

  7. oliphant says:

The office was not my cup of tea, but Extras was amazing and The Ricky Gervais show is even funnier-animated versions of podcasts- check it out if you haven’t seen 🙂

plus he’s a fierce advocate of animal rights, which makes me love him 🙂

    • t.fanty says:

I LOVED the Office, and I love Ricky with Stephen Merchant. I kind of got Ricky-fatigue, but when he started being an animal rights activist, I got back on board. I think he knows he can be boorish, but I love seeing him channel his pit-bull mentality at people who fully deserve his wrath.

      • SloaneY says:

I loved The Office and I loved Extras even more. He is a truth teller, and some people just don’t like that kind of humor. I know people who worked with him and said he can be an @$$, but he is supremely confident and great at what he does. They also said Stephen Merchant is a sweetheart.

  8. TheOtherMaria says:

I’ll watch only because it’s fun watching someone NOT kiss celebrity ass….

    • GingerCrunch says:

      Yassssss!!!

    • FingerBinger says:

Award shows are all about ass kissing. They’re getting awards. People don’t go to these events to be insulted.

      • Josefina says:

Complaining about ass-kissing on an award show is like complaining about violence on a boxing tournament. If you hate it so much, just change the channel.

    • lisa2 says:

There have been awards shows for YEARs. I don’t get why people are all all lets bitch at the celeb because they are at an event that’s purpose is to celebrate their work. If people don’t like celebs butts being kissed then why watch the shows to begin with.

      • pinetree13 says:

But that’s exactly it…these award shows are in danger of going extinct BECAUSE people ARE ‘changing the channel’ in droves. Watching celebs get made fun of is harmless fun (really, they can go home and weep into piles of money and then visit fan sites for compliments) and it can boost ratings of these boring shows.

  9. t.fanty says:

I think he’s a good host. He’s funniest when it isn’t about him.

Best Ricky Gervais guest sketch? I’m torn between Liam Neeson and Ian McKellan.

  10. grabbyhands says:

I appreciated that the last time he hosted celebs got so butthurt about how he was poking fun at them, but having said that, his schtick gets old fast.

I feel like as far as he is concerned either you agree completely with everything he says and does and are worthy of praise and notice or you don’t see everything his way and are a target for constant verbal abuse. I had to stop following him on Twitter because I got tired of his rants.

    • Josefina says:

His is one of the worst celeb twitter accounts out there – and that says A LOT. Any criticism tweeted at him was met with a rant and the guy was always trolling people so they got mad. He’s got the mindset of a 12 year old.

  11. jugstorecowboy says:

I really liked The Office, but adored Extras. I think he’s funny, but can also be really grating. He needs Stephen Merchant for grounding (and likability).

  12. kri says:

I like him, too. I have a bad feeling it’s because he’s British. I’m one of those people who needs a Tshirt that says “If You Are British I Love You And I will Clean Your House As Long As You Keep Talking”. Or maybe not. That’s alot to fit on a Tshirt. someone help.

  13. Josefina says:

He’s the very worst kind of comedian, imo. Offensive for the sake of being offensive and not funny at all. He’s like Louis CK, if Louis was an unfunny douchebag.

Good thing I never cared about the GGs.

    • KB says:

Everyone gives him credit for “telling the truth” but Amy & Tina did it and were actually funny. I don’t dislike him because he’s insulting people. I dislike him because he ONLY insults people. Then he does that dumb smile and laugh and says he’s going to get in trouble for it. Blech. He’s terrible.

  14. Armenthrowup says:

    Is it 2005????

  15. Coconut says:

I’d rather watch the show with a sleeping duck than RG!!!

    • La La Land says:

+10000000000000000000 … and yet posts like yours are the MINORITY on this thread.

      so fked up

i really am in La La Land

  16. Lou says:

I don’t think he and Stephen Merchant have a great relationship these days. Steve has nothign to do with the new David Brent movie. I think their relationship was always only professional, they are so opposite i doubt they were ever ‘friends’ as such, but they seem to have distanced themselves from each other totally now.

I don’t mind when these hosts tease the celebs who can take it and who will laugh it off. I don’t enjoy seeing him target somebody when they are down already or who it would upset, unless its a douche like Cosby obviously.

Ricky and Jane have been together for over 30 years. No marriage, no kids and no intentions of it. They seem to have a great life with homes in London and New York, travelling in private planes, helping animal causes close to their hearts and both doing what they love. I’m sure it wasn’t all plain sailing before Ricky found success but i must say, i envy their lifestyle now. For anyone who doesn’t want kids/marriage and who feels judged – point them in Ricky and Jane’s direction – Life can be very very good without any of that!

  17. Miss M says:

He is surprised as I was that Johnny Depp did not get a nomination, hahahaha

  18. Lisa says:

    Definitely meh.

  19. knower says:

When I heard Mel Gibson was attending……

    f**k that show.

  20. Whitney says:

He has the most annoying laugh that I’ve ever heard. Barf.

  21. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Excited! I love Ricky. Love love Tina & Amy. Alternating them makes me happy.
I only wish the GG’s didn’t have the hosts vanish for such long periods of time.
