David Schwimmer refused to appear on ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’

THR2

I’m not sure what kind of interest there is in FX’s miniseries, The People vs. O.J. Simpson, but this week’s Hollywood Reporter cover story will make you more interested in it. I was kind of meh on the idea of a miniseries about arguably the most famous criminal trial in modern history, but after reading this THR piece, I’m kind of into it. They used good source material, and the actors they hired to play these iconic/infamous people are intriguing. I personally think casting Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark was a master stroke, plus Courtney B. Vance as Johnny Cochran is *perfection*. But most people are excited about John Travolta as Robert Shapiro. Not to mention Selma Blair as Kris Kenner and David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian Sr. Which brings me to the most important excerpts from this THR story: the parts that involve the Kardashians before Kim made everyone extra-famous with her butt.

First of all, this piece isn’t all about the Kardashians at all. Everyone involved in the miniseries has interesting stuff to say, like Cuba Gooding Jr. admitting that it wasn’t until just now that he really understood the pain and loss the Brown and Goldman families felt, or the story of how Ryan Murphy basically kissed John Travolta’s ass until Travolta agreed to do this role, or Travolta admitting that he sought advice from Oprah and Steven Spielberg about playing Shapiro. The most interesting part, to me, was when the actors talked about whether they met their real-life counterparts. Cuba gave a well-reasoned explanation for why he had no desire to meet O.J. Travolta never spoke to Shapiro, but Shapiro wrote him a “supportive note.” Marcia Clark and Sarah Paulson went out for drinks after Paulson wrapped on the series. And Selma Blair is now so tight with Kris Jenner that Kris had Selma over for Christmas. The funniest part? David Schwimmer talking about how he did his research into the Kardashian clan:

David Schwimmer spent two-plus hours on the phone with the late Robert Kadarshian’s ex-wife, Kris Jenner, from whom he says he learned “how much a man of faith Robert was, how he prayed at every meal and before every big business meeting and how he was this very compassionate, generous guy.”

Then Schwimmer adds with a chuckle: “The producers of [Keeping Up With the Kardashians] had asked me if I wanted to talk to the daughters, too, but I didn’t feel that was necessary. And they wanted to do it on camera.”

The Kardashian daughters, then just children, do pop up periodically in the series. The most memorable if somewhat cringe-worthy scene comes in episode three when they’re seated with their father at L.A. fixture Chin Chin being lectured about fame. “We are Kardashians, and in this family, being a good person and a loyal friend is more important than being famous,” he tells them. “Fame is fleeting. It’s hollow. It means nothing at all without a virtuous heart.” Though the family did go to the Chinese restaurant, Karaszewski and Alexander acknowledge taking creative liberties with this conversation. They did the same during episode two, when the daughters turn on the TV, see their father reading Simpson’s suicide note and begin chanting, “Kar-dash-i-an!”

“Larry and I love irony, and we thought what if we just heightened this idea that by watching him on the TV that one day inadvertently creates the Kardashian empire,” says Alexander. “[Robert] would be rolling over in his grave.”

[From THR]

Ha, why does Ryan Murphy hate the Kardashian family? Why does it feel like David Schwimmer was dripping with sarcasm when he talked about Robert Sr. as a man of faith? Why even include a scene with Robert Sr. telling his children that fame is hollow and fleeting? See, I do think this is going to be fun/scandalous/interesting. And I do sort of love that Schwimmer just flat-out refused to be on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Ross Gellar has standards, bruh.

Yikes! Travolta looks terrible on that cover.

  2. Pinky says:

    Hot mess? Yeeees!!!

  3. NewWester says:

“Fame is fleeting. It’s hollow” That in some ways explain why the Kardashian ( and Jenners) are so into hustling for the almighty dollar and being popular. They know when the fame is gone so is the money.
Was Robert Kardashian Sr alive when Kim’s infamous pOrn film was made public? I wonder what he would have thought of that

    • LAK says:

Robert senior died in 2003. Long before the infamous tape and subsequent fame.

Based upon publicly available information, it’s highly probable that Robert senior would have HATED the K Klan as much as we do.

IIRC, from an early Hollywood’s true story E special, before they started retrospectively curating ie lying about their own history and before they had turned into the juggernaut they are, Robert Sr made Kim take regular jobs when she finished high school eg in his office and later as a stylist. Pretty sure he is the reason Kourtney made it to college. Robert Jr went to college because it’s what Sr would have wanted, NOT Kris. Robert Sr wasn’t a famewhore nor was he into hollywood values though he was very successful. Even then, Kris Jenner’s fame thirst was evident. They talked about her wanting the hollywood life and chasing the hollywood life. It would seem that Robert Sr’s death released her from having to account for her kids morality and she could advise them to pursue the path they all currently pursue without the counter balance of disapproving Robert Sr.

It’s so weird how they all talk about him and visit his grave to approve their famewhore decisions when he disapproved so much in life.

If he is not rolling in his grave, he is definitely astonished at their famewhore ways.

    • word says:

He died the same year Kim and Ray-J filmed the tape. The tape stayed in Kim’s hands for 3 years before it “mysteriously” got made public (after Paris got famous for her tape and Kim got jealous). Had Kim’s father been alive, there is no way in hell that tape would have ever gone public. PMK on the other hand, probably wished Kim had made more.

  4. Fee says:

The Kardashians are gonna milk this for all its worth. On their show, on their social media n infamous sources say….

    • Loopy says:

The world has gone mad, why are they even being featured in this series they were kids, they just being used to boost ratings.

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

So true @Loopy! It pisses me off that when looking back at the OJ case, people are actually trying to link the Kardashian family to it as if they played some major role. No one knew who they were. People only knew who Robert was. Kris Jenner and Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Rob were completely irrelevant. This is a really lame effort to boost ratings.

      • pf says:

Actually Daria people who followed the case did know of Kris Jenner. Whether or not she overexaggerated her BFF status with Nicole Brown Simpson is one thing, but she was at the trial, did interviews, etc. but yeah, no one knew of the Kardashian children back then and I wish it stayed that way.

  5. Maya says:

David is a underestimates actor and director – he was the best of the Friends crew and should have been more famous than the rest of them.

    • Tala D says:

      Agreed.

    • Snugglekitty says:

      I completely agree!

He consistently acted brilliantly as Ross, my favourite character on Friends. I find him wonderfully nuanced and utterly perfect with comedic timing.

Great actors all around in this OJ Simpson piece actually, will be worth watching

  6. Nancy says:

The Kardashians will milk the attention from this film like they’re milking a cow for their last meal. I would watch the film as the OJ saga was everywhere back then even though I was a kid I remember. On an early KUWTK, Kris threw herself on Robert Sr.’s grave ala Madonna in Truth or Dare on her mothers grave. She is relentless in her quest for attention. I hope the film succeeds on its merits, they do have good actors….and not the fact a Kardashian was involved. David aged nicely it seems…..he is a much larger man than Robert K. was, but can pull it off. I always thought he was underrated as an actor and overshadowed by Jennifer and Courtney after the series ended.

  7. mememe says:

Am I the only one to think Schwimmer is a terrible choice to play Kardashian?

    • FingerBinger says:

Schwimmer is a good choice. He does resemble Robert Kardashian. He could be too tall. Kardashian was kind of short.

    • Kitten says:

      I actually think he’s a great choice. I think I’m gonna watch this…

      • Armenthrowup says:

Me too! It’s gonna be cheese-tastic! (And BTW, I’m kinda hot for Schwimmer – I’m at that age :D)

  8. Abbott says:

The Kardashians got shaded by a man who makes his living off of Friends reruns. I love it.

  9. Mylene-Montreal says:

I have a good feeling about 2016 ….. Kanye produce Rihanna album it’s not out yet its already a flop, this guy refuse to be on the reality show, balmain take real top model for they last campaign and realise the Kardashian did damage to the brand and kocktails with khloe will be be a major flop right ? …… i drink my coffee and i smile right now ………………………

    • Chrissy says:

Here’s hoping it’s the beginning of the end for that grotesque family….

    • me says:

Also Kanye’s new song is horrible and getting extremely bad reviews. I too feel this year will finally be the end of the Kardashian mania.

    • claire says:

I was pretty happy to see Maddy Zeigler win the People’s Choice award thingy the other night over Kylie. That was fantastic!

    • Wentworth Miller says:

@Mylene-Montreal: What’s the story with Balmain, that u speak of?
I use to check for their clothes but I turned away when those people linked themselves to it.

      • paolanqar says:

Balmain used Cindy, Claudia and Naomi for its latest campaign.
It goes without saying that the difference between real old school models and famewhores turned into models is gobsmacking.

  10. Regina Phelange says:

This is going to be the greastest mini series of all time.

    • Babycakes says:

LOL! I think I’m going to really enjoy it. Looks so loopy with its casting and the writers’ “artistic license”- its gotta be good right? Can’t wait:)

  11. Miss Grace Jones says:

This dude has a very sad mouth. Like it makes him look very unhappy.
On another note I only saw one trailer of this and I admit when he said ‘I’m not black–I’m OJ’ I kinda laughed because WHAT

    • NewWester says:

I have a feeling that this mini series will have an epic amount of “WTF” quotes. Can’t wait to watch this mess and then see the comments on Celebitchy

    • Lisa says:

No seen trailer but it reminds of when Chris Rock said something along the lines that being rich is almost as good as being white

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have mixed feelings about seeing this. I was fascinated by the original trial and watched as much of it as I could. I was stunned by the outcome and outraged by the callousness of people cheering outside the courtroom in the hearing of the families because OJ had gotten away with slitting the throat of two innocent people. I don’t know if I want to bring those feelings back up again.

Love that Schwimmer blew off KUWTK.

    • AmyB says:

I agree with you GNAT….I too watched the trial as it unfolded and was horrified when OJ was acquitted! It was incredibly sad to see how our justice system failed miserably and I cannot imagine the pain and anguish Nicole and Ron Goldman’s families went through. But I absolutely love that Ross refused to appear on that show! Schwimmer was the best one of the bunch on Friends in my opinion…..

  13. B baby says:

“Ross Gellar has standards, bruh.” I don’t think it’s anything to do with standards. it’s Hollywood elitism and I actually think less of celebs who do this the way he does as if it’s something to be proud of. There seems to be plenty of useless, mediocre, fame hungry celebrities who came up through less than noble means but it seems like certain celebs only want to the target the “d-listers”, it’s a cheap shot.

    • SloaneY says:

I didn’t get any shade from the article. Tone of voice is hard to relay in print. I also don’t think him saying he didn’t want to be on the show is a cheap shot.

      • SydneySnider says:

SloaneY, that’s how I read it, too. People choose to be seen or hang out with some people and not others. We all do it, and celebrities are no different. Personally, I’m surprised by the number/calibre of celebrities who do associate with the KJs, with some even giving the impression they are suddenly best friends with DemonMum and her spawn. For example, Ms Blair was invited to KJ’s Chrissy shindig. And accepted. Then I recall Jennifer Lawrence’s recent cringeworthy antics. People are free to associate and make friends with whomecer they desire, and it’s great that even the KJs have friends. For all I know, they might be sweet people in private, but I can’t help but remember what that fashion critic/writer said about being “tainted by the Kardashian stink”… Not judging, just observing. Loyalty is very important.

    • Marigold says:

All he said was he didn’t want to appear on the reality show. How is that elitism? Honestly, what value would it have brought to his role? He talked to Kris for two hours-who was an adult when all this took place. The sisters were children, who likely barely understood what was going on. I don’t see why it’s such a big deal that he didn’t want to guest on KUWTK.

    • justagirl says:

How do you see it as elitism? It’s a movie about the Simpson trial…the Kardashian kids were children when it took place. They would have little of relevance to contribute, since the topic is a specific case, and their father’s professional life.

Of course he’d chuckle at being asked to talk to the daughters on-camera – it’s such an obvious, tasteless attempt by the K-producers. The very concept of having a heart to heart about someone’s late father on-camera seems odd and gratuitous. And, again because the movie is about that sad case, it would also be heartless & inconsiderate towards the Brown & Goldman families. They don’t need any more ties to the K-circus.

  14. Lucy2 says:

I’m strangely curious to watch this. I still remember sitting transfixed by the white bronco chase, and the day of the verdict everyone walking around campus listening to the radio, waiting for news.

Who else think Spielberg did a hearty eye roll when Travolta called him for advice on this?

Glad Schwimmer refused that show, but should’ve known better than to call Kris for info- everything out of her mouth is a lie.

  15. Ramona Q. says:

Schwimmer didn’t quite “refuse” to be on KUWTK, he DECLINED to do a taped Q&A. That’s different.

  16. Bolt says:

Those are great camera angles to make Cuba look taller than everyone else.

  17. me says:

I don’t understand what big role Kris Jenner or her kids had with the OJ trial anyways? They don’t even need to be mentioned in the miniseries. It’s just to grab some younger viewers perhaps. I have zero interest in watching this as we all know the details of what happened (those of us old enough to remember). Moving along…

    • CK says:

Ryan Murphy doesn’t have the restraint necessary to avoid using Kris Jenner or the kids. After years of watching his shows, that’s the usual reason for when something completely unnecessary and exploitative happens. No one tells him no.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

@ME: I watched the trial on YouTube not too long ago and I don’t even remember her being a part of anything. The only reference to them I remember was OJs lawyer, Robert. I’m younger, and them being sorta kinda adjacently sideways kinda mixed into the trial doesn’t make me wanna watch it.

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Jenner was in the public with Brown’s family ( she was her best friend) whereas her ex-husband defended Simpson

  18. Lama Bean says:

I may watch just to get my dose of Courtney B. Vance. That man’s voice is like butter.

  19. CK says:

Am I the only one that has come to dislike those that seek attention off of hating/slamming the Kardashians just about as much as I dislike the Kardashians? I might be biased because I tend to avoid the Kardashians like the plague and only get my exposure to them thanks to people complaining about them, but I feel like things like this just feed into the already inflated Kardashian bubble. We could exile the Kardashians and everyone who likes them to a deserted island, but we’d still have to deal with someone trying to get publicity over hating them every single week. Rant over.

I don’t think that Ryan Murphy hates the Kardashian family. I just think that Ryan Murphy will do anything for attention and I say that as someone who loved most of Nip/Tuck, Glee, and AHS. I’m surprised he hasn’t had a Kardashian stand-in on AHS get slaughtered yet.

    • ERM says:

I actually don’t think enough people speak up against the Kardashians and by not doing so they have continued to get into the mainstream ….

    • Josefina says:

I’m tired of people acting like someone speaking against the Kardashians is some sort of heroic act. Everyone outside of her fanbase knows exactly what they are and avoid them. Much like you, I’m informed of the very actions of the Kardashians because of their haters, not their fans. Buy their overpriced products and make them rich. Complain about them in the internet and make them more famous. Ignore them, and they’ll slowly go away.

      • Wentworth Miller says:

I swear, I’ve never seen anything make more sense.
That’s the same thing that happened with Paris Hilton. All over the place then slowly went away

    • katie says:

Actually, too many have been kissing KarTRASHian ass for tooo long! It’s nice to see REAL stars put them in their place…at the bottom of the trash heap, where they belong!!!

  20. serena says:

I’ll watch this, I’m sure it’s interesting and I kinda like David Swimmer too.

  21. word says:

Were there no Armenian actors to play that role? We complain about “accuracy” in movies, and yes I know this is just a miniseries, but come on. Why is no one commenting on the fact that a non-Armenian is being cast to play a man that was 100% Armenian?

  22. Jenna C says:

I saw David Schwimmer at The Spotted Pig in NYC – in fact, we were asked to hurry up with our dinner because it was his bday and they wanted our spot for his party! We were just leaving the restaurant when he pulled up in a cab with his wife. She is gorgeous, and he was very sweet with her. We noticed all kinds of famous folks showing up to join them for their shindig, though everyone was trying to be low-key.

Not a moment later, we rounded the corner, and – no joke – saw Justin Theroux sitting on stoop chatting on his cell! Was he headed to the party? Or was he in town and snubbing David again – just like he and Jen did with their wedding? We didn’t double back, but I’ve always been dying to know!

    • me says:

I think it sucks you were forced to hurry up with your meal because of his bday. Why didn’t they just have the table reserved well ahead of time instead? I hate how celebs get treated like they are God or something. Ughh.

  23. NeoCleo says:

I really hate that the Simpson trial is being framed as “the trial of the century.”

Wasn’t there a little something called the Nuremburg Trials back in the 1950s that prosecuted and jailed a bunch of Nazi war criminals? I don’t know, maybe I’ve got the wrong attitude but somehow one does not measure up to the other.

  24. Josefina says:

Idk how this will turn out. I read Murphy wants it to be serious, but he just loves camp so much. That whole trial was a circus so I actually think camp would be a good way to go, but it could offend the families of the victims. And then there’s a character called Kris Kardashian and well…..

  25. My Two Cents says:

I vividly remember the whole OJ trial and it’s characters. Somehow, I doubt this will be anything close to reality except repeating things said in court maybe. I couldn’t stand Marcia Clark back then. If they want to portray true Kardashian life back then, they need to include Kris and her illicit affairs.
