2016 Golden Globes recap: was Ricky Gervais offensive or funny or both?

FFN_RIJ_GOLDEN_GLOBES_SET2_011016_51943710

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided, for some reason, to bring back Ricky Gervais as host of the Golden Globes. After three incredibly successful years with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting, bringing back Gervais felt like… backsliding. Some of Gervais’s jokes really landed and some were just groan-inducing. Like, the Caitlyn Jenner jokes could have stood alone, but then he took it too far when he tried to joke about Jeffrey Tambor. Anyway, here are some random highlights/notables/interesting moments from last night’s Golden Globes, and this mostly involves Gervais’s one-liners. Note: this is no way comprehensive! You can see the full list of last night’s winners here.

*Good Gervais jokes: “I want to do this monologue, then go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will find me… snitch.” My favorite Gervais joke: “All these rich, beautiful celebrities having the time of their lives. Let’s hope nobody spoils that. You are megastars with enormous talent. Most of you – some of you just married well.”

*The groan-inducing joke? “I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously – now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere…she showed great bravery. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything.” Then the Jeffrey Tambor jokes about “balls.” He took it to far.

*Everybody makes fun of the Golden Globes: “It’s a bit of metal that some nice old confused journalist wanted to give you so they could meet you and take a selfie with you.” On NBC hosting the Globes: “It’s right that NBC hosts this awards show because they’re the only network that were fair and partial, and that’s because they’re the only network with zero nominations. Nothing in it for them.”

*The Jonah Hill bit. I think it could have been okay if Jonah – who is tight with Leo DiCaprio – wanted to make some jokes about the bear in The Revenant. But A) the bit went on too long and B) we missed half of it because Jonah went off script and started cursing up a storm.

*Matt Damon. Matt Damon actually won Best Actor in Comedy/Musical for The Martian, and The Martian picked up the award for best Comedy/Musical. My hope is that Matty D puts some effort into it and becomes a major spoiler for Leo. Wouldn’t you love that? Matt also presented, and this is how Gervais announced it: “Matt Damon, the only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.”

*The thing with Mel Gibson. We knew Mel was going to be there to present Mad Max: Fury Road. It was a mess. Gervais’s first quips about Mel were awkward, then Mel came out and had a decent come-back (“”). Then Gervais came back on stage and apparently, Gervais asked Mel Gibson “What the f—k does Sugart-ts even mean?” NSFW language:

*Quentin Tarantino & “That ghetto.” He referred to Ennio Morricone’s lack of American awards as “that ghetto,” which really bugged me. In any case, Tarantino had his facts wrong. He claimed Morricone had “never won an award for any one individual movie” at a U.S. awards show. Morricone has won two previous Golden Globes, plus a lifetime achievement Oscar.

Lady Gaga won TV Drama actress. Why does the HFPA hate Fargo?! Also, when Gaga went up to the stage, this happened:

Kate Winslet won. For Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs. I’m not happy about it either. She did call Michael Fassbender a “legend.”

Rachel Bloom winning. She won for Best Actress in Comedy TV show – she was so excited and talking so fast!

Oscar Isaac won. For best actor in a TV drama and panties exploded all over the world. He looked so good!

Sylvester Stallone won. He won Best Supporting Actor, proving that Mark Rylance doesn’t actually have the race tied up, and some people like the nostalgia factor of recognizing Sly. But! Some people are mad because he didn’t remember to thank Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler.

Brad Pitt. He looked aggressively chemical peeled and orange.

Jennifer Lawrence won another award. How many Golden Globes does she need? She’s got three of them now. At least she didn’t fall! She did sound pretty drunk though.

Denzel Washington winning the Cecil B. DeMille Award was lovely. I loved that his wife and kids came up on stage with him. They seemed like a real married couple, and their kids were lovely.

Brie Larson won. She’s waged such an effective undercover campaign, it wouldn’t surprise me if she went all the way.

Taraji P. Henson. She won, she was drunk, and she handed out cookies.

The Revenant is the one to beat? It picked up awards for Best Drama, Best Director and Best Actor. If Alejandro Innaritu wins a second Best Director Oscar for Boy Drama in the Woods, I will freak out. Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor in a Drama and he got the second standing ovation of the night. It was bizarre.

And in the end… this show was all over the place. I felt (and still feel) second-hand drunk from the evening. I will give the Golden Globes some credit: after several really boring awards shows in a row (God, the Emmys sucked so hard last year), it was refreshing to have an awards show that moved quickly, like a drunk roller coaster ride full of obscenities.

  1. sensible says:

He was awesome, American actors need a little truth serum every now and then and he is just the man to do it. I loved how offended Jane Fonda looked, she needs to get a sense of humour. ….but maybe she does after all she went dressed as a lampshade.

    • Palar says:

Agree love Ricky and I love humour!

      • joan says:

He was lame and tame, because his attempts at being “edgy” were not funny.

An outrageously edgy joke that isn’t funny just falls flat.

And because he wasn’t funny, he cast a pall over the entire show.

People who say he was funny seem like the type who just like someone to be mean — and they’re not that far from being Trump admirers.

      • CTgirl says:

No one hires Ricky Gervais and expects him to kiss up to the talent. He is who he is and he’s made quite a career out of being offensive, funny and on point. If you don’t like that kind of humor then turn the channel. Problem solved. What I found interesting is that there were some celebrities who obviously wanted to guffaw at some of Gervais’ quips but tried to cover it up on his more politically incorrect jokes.

    • Melanie says:

I wholeheartedly agree. He was awesome and can do no wrong in my eyes. He even seemed a bit tame this year. Team Ricky!

      • pinetree13 says:

I actually was disappointed because I felt he went ‘too tame’. Maybe my expectations were too high.

      • joan says:

        He was BEYOND tame.

        HE WAS LAME.

      • Crumbedtofu says:

I’m convinced he was muzzled this year. I mean, if you were attending as a big-name celeb, wouldn’t you get in touch discreetly beforehand and threaten not to turn up if you were on Ricky’s jokes list? You wouldn’t take any chances on becoming the laughing stock and meme of the week. For example, Angelina’s Leg has been immortalised in cyberspace.

    • Naya says:

Its not the truth serum part, we love the truth serum. Its his delivery. He peddles in ”isnt this awkward” humor which works great on TV shows but just feels smug on a show like this. He doesnt know how switch on that eye twinkle wink-wink factor that lets you get away with saying the most biting thing about people who are in the room. So while he is accusing his audience of taking himself too seriously, it actually feels like HE takes his monologue too seriously. Thats the real difference between him and Tina & Amy, not the material.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I like that he doesn’t have the wink-wink factor – he’s openly mocking the celebrities and I love it. It feels like he’s pondering to the people watching rather than to the celebirities the way Tina and Amy did. Tina and Amy always felt like they were part of them, and Ricky comes across as on outsider. Wheter he is one, I don’t know. I like him much more than Tina and Amy.

He was tame this year, but all in all, I liked his jokes. The only one I felt was too awkward was the Mel Gibson one.

      • tracking says:

I agree, Locke Lamora, I like him, but thought the Mel Gibson jokes went too far.

      • tracking says:

        Comedic low-hanging fruit, I guess.

      • Naya says:

Funny, the only “joke” I actually gave him credit for was the Mel Gibson moment. Like I said, I find Ricky awkward and painful to watch and if there was one person in that room who does deserve an awkward and painful time, its Mel Gibson. Ricky gave me no laugh out loud moments but at least I had a brief moment of satisfaction at Mel Gibsons expense. Grateful to Ricky for that small crumb at least

      • SloaneY says:

That’s what makes his humor (and Brit humor in a lot of cases) different than American. There’s no qualifier. There’s no wink-wink-nudge-nudge. I like it. Some people don’t.
I don’t think the Tamboor stuff landed well, but the rest of it was pretty good. And why in the heck did they ask Mel to be there in the first place? Why didn’t they ask Bill Cosby too and double down on the awkward?

      • V4Real says:

Ricky was good in my opinion. And it’s not just the American actors @sensible, it’s all actors. I quit prefer Gervais over Tina and Amy. Both times he hosted he gave me more laughs than they did.

@SloaneY Didn’t they invite Mel because of Mad Max Fury Road? Anyways I don’t see why some people are so shock that Mel was there. This isn’t the first time Mel has appeared at an award show since his crazy outburst. Wasn’t he at the Golden Globes with Jody Foster in 2013? He didn’t present but he was sitting at her table.

      • Naya says:

Mel has the starring role in an upcoming movie, so he is predictably back at image rehabilitation. Expect him at all manner of public events for the next few months.

      • Nic919 says:

That Matt Damon intro was amazing and then Damon’s reaction to it even better. Most of the people in the crowd are egomaniacs and need to be brought down a peg or two. No one’s life is going to change after watching the Revenant and Gervais used the perfect tone. I agree the Tambour riff wasn’t really funny, but the rest of the stuff was on par. I mean Lady Gaga was a perfect example of overblown ego. Too bad he couldn’t have come on after her ego trip.

      • sweetpea says:

@naya – I totally agree with your comments about Mel Gibson. Mel Gibson is a bigot and needs to be given a hard time. And Ricky’s comments landed there.

    • Cynthia says:

Exactly, he was the only reason I watched. Not only Jane Fonda , Lily Tomlin as well. Every time they did a close up of her she was covering her mouth aghast

      • Fee says:

Maya, why so hard on Mel Gibson. Its been 10 yrs , u have effin pedophiles winning awards, but Mel presenting a film is Ricky’s time to ridicule.

    • Decorative Item says:

Completely agree. They live in enough of a bubble of self adoration and really do need a reality check once in awhile. If they don’t get checked they tend to take themselves too seriously and, inevitably, try to preach their bubble knowledge to the “ungrateful” masses.

      • Susan says:

Agree. I adore him. The self congratulatory stuff needs to be tempered and he’s just the guy to do it.

      • V4Real says:

I think that applies to all actors no matter the country.

That being said I was happy they invited Ricky back. He didn’t disappoint.

Was that disgust Leo showed for Gaga? No gif needed, Leo created his own.

      • Kat says:

Agreed. I also couldn’t believe the groaning from the audience over Ricky’s joke about Roman Polanski. Really, folks??? Was it too soon for all of you? So we can all agree that pedophiles are a$$holes, unless of course they’re talented directors, then they merit unwavering adoration — idiots!

    • Pinky says:

I was gonna skip the whole thing, but I watched a half hour just for Ricky and laughed.

    • JudyK says:

Love Ricky and agree w/ your Jane Fonda and her prune-face comment.

Thought Ricky went too far w/ the Mel Gibson thing, but, other than that, loved him.

The person I found offensive and not at all funny was Jonah Hill.

      • Cranberry says:

        +1
Pretty much agree, but people here think Ricky is above everything in Hollywood and that celebrities need to be brought down a peg by him. But Ricky’s got an major ego too, and his Mel Gibson comment proved it. That comment wasn’t about justice or entertainment, it was Ricky retaliating out of ego instead of doing his job and staying relevant to the occasion and to the audiences (including TV viewers not just the celebrities).

    • Nev says:

      Yes he was amazing.

    • MickeyM says:

He was hilarious. Agreed: go Ricky. Also – a point he was kind of driving at – these celebrities are assuming the risk agreeing to go. Did anyone see Alan Cumming’s reaction when Ricky was with Mel? THE BEST!

    • Eggland's worst says:

Upvote. It reminds me of a few years ago when Stephen Colbert went as his CC character for some awards show and really laid into the celebrities for their arrogant self-congratulating behavior. Sometimes these people need to be knocked down a peg or two. I thought he was hilarious and I am not even a fan of his.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Amen to Jane Fonda needing to grow a sense of humor, though it’s a bit late now for her to change. I was once at a party for her when I still lived in SoCal, and I will NEVER forget the angry, superior look on her face when some young adoring woman approached her and raved about how much she had LOVED Jane in Barbarella, the movie that Jane was trying hard to forget at that time because she felt it undermined her efforts to be a serious political force. (She was still married to Tom Hayden then, and they were working hard on their Campaign for Economic Democracy–but Tom was never humorless like Jane.) Everyone in the room froze at that moment, and then Jane walked on without a word, just a cold, brisk nod. It was one of those moments where time really does seem to stand still. I flashed back to that moment so hard last night when I saw that same look on Fonda’s face again. Even the whipped-cream ruffles couldn’t soften it.

    • Carol says:

I like Ricky Gervais and I especially love when anyone ribs the entertainment community. But some of his jokes just weren’t funny. I could care less if something is offensive as long as it is funny. But some of his jokes just didn’t land and they sounded a little stale. I do have to admit that his Affleck joke was priceless.

  2. Kath says:

I find Ricky immensely smug and irritating, but that Ben Affleck line was gold.

    • Ally8 says:

My fave was the one about JLaw and Schumer: “It’s like they never had a friend before.”

      • perplexed says:

        Yeah, that line was funny.

I didn’t get the Jeffrey Tambor jokes, but maybe that was my own fault — I’m not up to speed on what’s going on there.

      • Cranberry says:

@perplexed Not worth explaining. The jokes were totally lame and flat. The worst of the night after his stupid Mel Gibson c*ck-fight retaliation.

    • Glimmerbunny says:

Loved the Ben Affleck joke, best line of the night for me.

I think the entire show was pretty funny though, albeit a bit messy.

  3. Sixer says:

Celebrity lust aside, I was so glad to see an Oscar Isaac win. Show Me A Hero was (after Leftovers) the best American TV I watched all year. Perhaps more impactful for me because I had no idea how the true story all turned out? He was sublime in it. And I may have gone against the grain in disliking Ex Machina, but that dancing scene was a little piece of film genius and he was sublime in that generally, too.

    • Dani2 says:

He was one of the few deserving winners of the night, so happy for him. And I agree that he was great in Ex Machina, both he and Alicia were phenomenal in that film and I wish he had gotten even half the attention she’s gotten for that role.

    • Lindy79 says:

Agreed, I was also happy to see Maura Tierney win for The Affair.

      • Kitten says:

So freaking happy Maura won as I a LOVE her so damn much. She out-acted Ruth Wilson (as well as West and Jackson) this past season. To be fair, the scenes they wrote for Helen gave Tierney ample opportunity to flex her acting chops, more so than the other characters. Still, her performance was a stand-out on Season 2 for sure.

    • lilacflowers says:

Happy to see both Oscar and Maura win. Maura elevates everything she appears in.

      • Pinky says:

Except ER. Otherwise, yeah. Adore her.

      • QQ says:

Amen!! But also can we right quick?? Fargo Shut out?? Gaga Rewarded for AHS?!? What?? im into B horror and Camp and even I could not make it past the third ep. Of this season of AHS!

  4. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Pssh, how can you sum up what went down with Taraji by saying she was drunk and she handed out cookies.

She rightfully called out the awards mechanism and did a smart two-level joke. “You want a cookie for that?”

    • Naya says:

I loved Taraji saving a cookie especially for Leo as if to say ”why you so thirsty these days? Have a cookie. Chill”

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I love Taraji! She was my favorite part of the GG, well other than the Ben Affleck joke. Leo’s face when Gaga bumped into him, I loved that she didn’t even look. Also I know the scale for “I want an OSCAAH” starts from Michael Fassbender (0) to AnnE Hathaway(20) but can we know replace it with Leo? Leo’s thirst is so much I was expecting him to belly cup himself & said that he was pregnant or that he was so in love with Lukas Haas (camera cuts to Lukas Haas smiling adoringly at Leo while he blows him a kiss). It’s too much, even AnnE wasn’t this thirsty for the OSCAAAH.

      • Nic919 says:

I am no fan of Leo, but Lady Gaga was so up her own ass that I actually like Leo a little better after that incident. Leo is thirsty but lady Gaga is delusional about her acting abilities.
And Kirsten Dunst was amazing in Fargo and should have beat Gaga.

  5. Down and Out says:

Not to defend it, but I thought the QT ‘ghetto’ comment was a sarcastic remark about film scores being looked down on, not specifically about Morricone.

    • Melanie says:

That’s how I took it as well.

    • Brittney B. says:

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure “ghetto” was problematic for reasons that have nothing to do with the composer.

I understood what he meant, even if it was a bit elitist (or self-deprecating, since movies are his life): that movie compositions are in an artistic wasteland compared to “real” music. He was using “ghetto” in the traditional sense of the term.

But in the US, “ghetto” as a pejorative is kind of inextricable from the “ghetto” adjective that describes anything in poor black communities. I honestly don’t think it’s how Quentin meant to use the term (though advocating for Black Lives Matter doesn’t exempt powerful white guys from racism)… but the term is too loaded, especially because…

His speech came *right* after Jamie Foxx pretended to announce Straight Outta Compton as the winner for best score (it was a Steve Harvey spoof, but it also reminded everyone that the movie wasn’t even nominated; it deserved way more awards love, and this ceremony was pretty whitewashed in general). Jamie also presented right after Quentin’s speech and immediately called out the “ghetto” part… leading me to believe he took it the same way I did at first.

    • ab says:

that’s how I took it as well, that he was using ghetto in the older sense of the word. but I immediately realized that it was a bad choice of words and that he’s going to catch shit for it.

  6. serena says:

Wtf did Leo had to laugh at Gaga for? Rude. I’m also pissed The Revenant is doing so well, I hope Leo doesn’t get an Oscar ’cause I don’t think he deserves it (and I don’t like him lol).
Damn give some awards to Spotlight and Mark Ruffalo!!!! Gah I’m so angry!
Also Jlaw for Joy? I’m sorry for all the Jlaw-loonies but this movie is a mess imo.. Maggie Smith on the other hand should have got it.
Not even talking of Kate Winslet… Seriously always the same people!

    • Evasmom says:

Serena, Thank you. I completely agree!

    • Naya says:

Agreed. I have no problem with people at home laughing at winners but contestants should shut up. You are part of the circus Leo, you dont get to laugh at the other clowns. I’m so glad Gaga spotted him on that moniter and gave him a proper body check as she passed. Rihanna does this ALOT too. Like she waits for the camera to land on her and then openly titters at whoever is on stage (Britney, Arianna) . I know they are all mean girls but thats especially nasty particularly when she herself gives incredibly unremarkable stage performances. Clowns dont get to mock other clowns, you clown.

      • serena says:

Yes! I don’t like Gaga a lot, and I’m sure someone else should have gotten that award (like Kirsten Dunst), but that is no way to act towards a fellow nominee – and yes it was aimed at her- . Gaga surely isn’t an amazing actress but she delivered and she worked for her success, wheter you like her music/act or not.
Leo on the other hand, might be a brilliant actor, but he is not only rude and disrespectful but also want us to believe he is a feminist and everything else. He doesn’t care, he’s just game for whatever he can do to win that Oscar. If he does win it, he’ll be even more smug than he is now. I can’t stand that.

    • tracking says:

Yes to all of this! But please, Leo, tell us more about the persecution of women.

    • Yepisaidit says:

A variety reporter said some voters didn’t even watch gagas American horror episodes and voted for her just because they wanted to, lol. Maybe the same happened with Jlaw performance

    • Cynthia says:

It does seems like he was talking to someone and laughing and what they said. Lady gaga just happen to walk by. But even at that, Lady Gaga is no actress, the fact that she won among all those other actresses says everything about the Golden Globe.

      • V4Real says:

Look at it this way. Lupita won and no one knew who she was until 12 Years A Slave. She won an Oscar based off one small performance that people had seen her in.

Take Jennifer Hudson into account. She wasn’t an actress. She was a singing contestant on American Idol who later became a professional singer. She was given the role of Effie in Dream Girls and won an Oscar for it. So why not Gaga. She’s actually quite good on American Horror Story.

      • wink1970 says:

He didn’t laugh at GaGa, he was laughing at Matt Damon if you look at other clips/photos taken. She walked past, made a concerted effort to side step & nudge him, presumably for the coverage she knew it would get.

      • V4Real says:

@Wink Wasn’t he laughing when her name was called as the winner hence the reason for the intentional nudge she gave him as to say I saw you laughing at me. Hence his reaction to her nudge.

      • Nic919 says:

I really doubt Gaga gave a performance that was to the level of Lupita in 12 Years a Slave of Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. Besides Kirsten Dunst was amazing this year in Fargo. There is no way Gaga was as good.

As for shade, while Leo is getting blamed, it looked like Queen Latifah was not appreciating her speech either.

      • V4Real says:

I’m no Gaga fan. Never have been. I’ve been watching AHS since the beginning. She wasn’t bad in it. Dunst was good and perhaps in your opinion she should have won.
But Lupita’s acting wasn’t that great as well. Tell me what was so amazing about her telling her owner that she went to get soap to wash her body. Sometimes these award shows give it to who they want to just because. It’s like they flip a coin or something. Look at Kim Basinger winning an Oscar for LA Confidential. What was so amazing about her low key performance.

      • Locke Lamora says:

It looked to me like he was laughing at something else, she bumped him unintentionally, he made a face as anyone would if they were bumpede into – no one was in the wrong, people are just making a story out of nothing.

    • CK says:

The movie, Joy, was a mess, but in almost every positive and negative review, J. Law’s performance is cited as a standout. Great performances can and should win in terrible films. That’s how she got nominated and won.

    • Cee says:

I watched Jobs this Friday and while I thought Sorkin winning for best script was an insult (honestly, Jobs was a disaster and the result of a weak script and bad editting) Kate Winslet and Fassbender were the film’s saving grace. I actually believe Winslet deserves the award. Many people complain about the accent work, but it sounded realistic – those of us with english as a second language often find our accents shift and change a little over time, sometimes being all over the place.

    • Well says:

@Serena Yes to all of this!!

    • claire says:

I don’t know if he was laughing at her or with someone else on something different, but if he was laughing at her who cares. She bought the award. No one has to bow down to her.

    • sarah says:

The Revenant was AMAZING. I can’t even put into words how beautiful the film is. The beyond belief scenery, the animals, the acting, the how-on-earth-did-they-shoot-this feeling you feel the whole time.. it’s a VISUAL experience if anything since there is not a lot of dialogue and the characters speak native american languages, french, and frontier accented English (my mom had a hard time understanding Tom Hardys american accent).

The standouts for me were: Forrester Goodluck (Hawk, Glass’s native american son), Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson WHO WASN’T EVEN INVITED TO THE GOLDEN GLOBES?!? Yet Ex Machina, Brooklyn, The Revenant were all nominted (and The Revenant won). Just insane, a film he has a big part in (3rd lead character) wins and he has to watch from home? And Katy Perry, Zendaya, non nominated non actors get to go?? Disrespectful and tacky..

      • Cee says:

It’s great to know the movie holds up to its hype. Personally I’m a fan of Chivo, which is why even though the film has leaked, I’m waiting for it to open in theatres where I live.

      • Eggland's worst says:

Gerard Butler was sitting at the table Fassy and clan was at and I was wondering about that myself. I have a redhead fetish (to a fault) and I would have drooled if Domhnall would have been there. Boo golden globes boo.

  7. AlmondJoy says:

You forgot the whole Jamie Foxx debacle.

Creed was amazing and everyone in it did a great job. I was so happy for Sly but really upset that Ryan Coogler and MBJ didn’t get nominated. And THEN, on top of that, Sly forgot to mention them. I’m not sure how you remember to name tons of people but forget the director, but I’m hoping it was just an accident. He’s spoken really highly of both Ryan and MBJ in the past.

    • Naya says:

He speaks well of MBJ but then I think thats partly because Michael comes at him with incredible reverence. With Ryan I always sense a strain. To be honest, I think Sly is conflicted about all this. He spent 40 years trying to legitimize that franchise and these two kids succeed with one easy shot. Sure its his characters but what does it say about his captaincy that he had to relinquish control for the world to take a serious look at the work. Anyway, he better make it up to them for that omission.

      • tracking says:

I don’t agree with this take. Rocky Balboa was very well received, and Sly seemed happy with that as the closeout of the franchise. He seemed excited to be part of a reboot with a fresh take imo and has spoken very highly of all involved.

      • Naya says:

“Sly seemed happy with that as the closeout of the franchise” Let me remind you the numerous times he has publicly retired Rocky or Rambo over the decades only to resurrect them again. Every sequel is always the “last” until a great offer comes along. This is who he is, the Sequel Prince …some say the Sellout Prince. Nobody reasonably believed that Balboa was the Rocky close out, comeon. Its Sly fgs! Just as nobody should reasonably believe that he wont be pushing Ryan and MJB for a Creed sequel in a few years. As for speaking highly, perhaps its genuine, perhaps its for the cameras. But theres no doubt that the very definition of a bitter-sweet moment is finally winning award recognition after 40 years in the cold but only because somebody else was finally in charge of the characters you created.

“I think Sly is conflicted about all this. He spent 40 years trying to legitimize that franchise and these two kids succeed with one easy shot.”

Rocky won an Oscar for Best Picture. Sly was nominated for best actor. Though he didn’t win he wrote that script. I think that’s legit enough. And yes Balboa was well received.

And it’s a given that there will be a sequel to Creed, no secret there.

Though he might not be some people cup of tea I admire the man for what he does. He didn’t sit back and wait for opportunities of acting jobs to come his way (though he was never hurting for work) he made it happen for himself. He created franchises such as Rocky, Rambo and now The Expendables.

      • AlmondJoy says:

I’m not sure Naya… Even in the behind the scenes footage I sense a great respect between Ryan and Sly. And they seemed really close, almost like family. And I’m SO glad he ended up thanking them later, as was posted below.

      • Naya says:

@V4Real “Rocky won an Oscar for Best Picture. Sly was nominated for best actor. Though he didn’t win he wrote that script.” Yes. In 1976. So as I said, 40 years in the cold. Sly isnt the meat head his audience decided he was, he is actually a pretty smart guy who wanted Hollywood legitimacy but found himself locked out from that world, so he settled for cash grabs. This man created two smart, poignant films (Rocky and First Blood – sure he didnt write the book but really culled the character) then proceeded to trade the nuance in for endless sequels in which the characters devolved into caricatures, pandering to the lowest of his audience. I know he attempted to reel it back with Rocky in Balboa but it still wasnt enough for award love. So as I said, it took Ryan and Michael to turn 40 years around.

      • V4Real says:

So I know he attempted to reel it back with Rocky in Balboa but it still wasnt enough for award love. So as I said, it took Ryan and Michael to turn 40 years around.

Or maybe it was just a case of it’s time this person won. Just like with Kim Basinger or Al Pacino, it’s the make-up award, it’s your turn and now here’s the chance to give it to you.

Also the Rocky franchise didn’t take a turn for the worse or in your words become “caricatures” until after Rocky 4. Rocky 2 and 3 received good reviews plus did well at the box office and while Rocky 4 reviews were not that great it was a high grossing film. Let’s not forget that no matter how many bad reviews a film gets if it is selling at the box office that’s what seems to count. So of course actors and film execs are going to push for sequels until it’s no longer a money grab.

      • Jib says:

@V4real, and when Rocky won Best Picture, Stallone yelled, “We won the big one!!” even though he didn’t win the Oscar for actor. I’ll never forget that. He just loved that movie, as it was all him.

    • Nik says:

Once SS realized he forgot to thank them, he appeared back on stage but this was during the commercial break so it didn’t air.

He called Ryan a brilliant filmmaker and thanked for Michael and Tessa “for doing all the work”.

      http://www.vulture.com/2016/01/stallone-forgot-to-thank-ryan-coogler-and-mbj.html

    • msd says:

Yeah, according to people who were there Stallone did thank both Coogler and Jordan. He seemed to finish, music started, then he came back to interrupt the music but by then they’d cut to a TV commercial. He’s given them both a lot of love in interviews so it’s just Twitter knee jerking. Coogler said he didn’t know that bit wasn’t included on the telecast until someone asked him if he was upset (he said huh? no).

  8. Cynthia says:

” I will freak out. Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor in a Drama and he got the second standing ovation of the night. It was bizarre.”
No, No, say what you want about Leo. He is a womanizer, his fetish for blonde, waif like models, blah blah. But you cannot take away the fact that he is a great, phenomenal actor. He is up there with the Deniros, and Denzel, hence why everyone stood was for him.

He takes his craft very seriously

    • Betti says:

Phenomenal is a bit of a stretch – he’s a good actor alright but needs the right script and director to shine. He’s been thirsty for an Oscar for many years and has been picking Oscar bait roles for years as well. He’d have got one sooner if he’d didn’t have the immature frat boy rep that he does, it kinda over shadows his on screen performances. He’ll get the Oscar purely to make him go away not because he really deserves it. Personally I think the other best actor contenders this season gave better performances than him. I love Bryan Cranston and think he should win more as he has real talent and is not super thirsty and desperate for the validation unlike Leo.

      • SugarQuill says:

You know, if somebody dedicates their entire career (spanning 20+ years in Leo’s case) to picking great, interesting projects and turning in reliably strong performances, I don’t think that that can simply be dismissed as ‘thirsting for an Oscar’. Here’s a shocking thought: maybe Leo actually cares about leaving behind a great body of work. He didn’t go the easy Matthew McConaughey rom-com route after Titanic and picked interesting projects since the very beginning (unless, of course, you are about to accuse an 18-year-old Leo of caring solely about winning an Oscar).

+1 to everything you said, Cynthia. I get that his personal life may not be to everyone’s taste, but people seem to be bending over backwards to bash him and his performances (undeservedly) and turn every single word and gesture into further ammunition against him. He deserved this award every bit. I hope he wins the Oscar too, just so I can see all of his detractors here frothing at the mouth in anger.

      • SloaneY says:

Agreed. He is good in some roles, great in others, but I wouldn’t call him phenomenal.
The problem with him is you always know it’s Leo. He doesn’t blend. He’s not a chameleon.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Yes, he takes his craft VERY seriously. And himself as well. He’s a solid actor who has made smart career moves, picking roles that suit him. That in and of itself is quite an achievement. But he is always Leo. Yes, De Niro is always De Niro as well but that’s his trademark. With Leo it’s more like he only has one speed. I don’t see him doing comedy for example. I think you need to be really good to do comedy and I have my doubts that he could do it. If he could, he wouldn’t because it’s not award bait and not “serious craft”. That’s why – aside from the model issue – I don’t think he’s that phenomenal.

Btw, does his name alone draw people to the theater? If Jake G. is in a movie, I might see it just to see his performance even if the material is mediocre. Leo? Eh. He picks REALLY good material. That’s part of why people think he’s a great actor.

      • SugarQuill says:

@littlemissnaughty, have you seen the Qualuudes scene in The Wolf of Wall Street? I thought that was quite a fantastic bit of physical comedy from Leo. The entire theatre was actually in tears during that scene. I’d also like it if he made a comedy, I certainly think he has the chops to pull it off, but as long as he makes good movies, the genre is irrelevant to me.

I’m not sure that there is any actor/actress out there anymore that can draw people to the theatre simply based on the fact that they’re the ones starring in a particular movie. And even if there were, Jake G is not someone I’d ever put in that category. Remember the flop that was Prince of Persia, Jake’s bid for Movie Stardom? The era of Movie Stars is over. People don’t even flock to theatres anymore when it’s a Will Smith or Johnny Depp movie. And those two used to be as close to a sure thing as you could get.

Leo does pick really good material, but I think that’s a talent in and of itself. Not one real dud in his filmography, and it’s not like there aren’t other actors out there with the same kind of access to good scripts and directors. *shrug*

      • Lilacflowers says:

The qualudes scene was brilliant but sadly, it was the only watchable scene in that three hour salute to misogyny

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Problem is that dicaprio has such a very remarkable face and he gets papped in everyday life a lot lot more than other actors. The papparazzi hunt him when he buys groceries,… that is surely not necessary?

Otherwise I think he vanishes and his movie characters appear. If you compare him in as a slink conman in “Catch me if you can” and as a toughman in “Body of Lies” or in “The Departed” then he looks and plays his character very very different.
I was also very very amazed how he played the High School teenager AND the older more mature Frank Abagnale in “Catch me if you can”.
Or compare the delusional dandy in “Great Gatsby” and the CIA(?) agent in “Body of Lies” and the fraudster living the high life in “Wolf of Wall Street”.
Or “Great Gatsby” and “The Departed” because in both he was a blonde.
Or try Calvin Candie in “Django Unchained” and “Wolf of Wall Street”.

I think he has quite some range. I was really impressed with his Calvin Candie character.

      • V4Real says:

I think Leo can do comedy, after all it is where he pretty much got his start as a kid on Growing Pains and Parenthood. There’s a difference between can’t do comedy and not wanting to do comedy. I liked his acting In Django Unchained as well as that scene in Wolf Of Wall street. I was laughing so hard tears came out. And I’m glad you mention Catch Me If You can. The man even had me laughing in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

Preacher: “yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death”
Jack: You wanna walk a little faster through that valley”

I’m sure a lot of people laughed at that line in Titanic; they did in the theater I saw it in. It’s all about timing and delivery and he has that. Hate on Leo, don’t hate on his talent.

  9. Emma - The JP Lover says:

Yay, Matty D! I think he was more surprised than everyone else when his name was called. And didn’t Luci look lovely? 🙂

I can’t understand how the actors in Ridley Scott films win Awards and the films Ridley Scott ‘directs’ the Award winning actors in win Awards, but he never does. What is up with that??? 🙁

    • V4Real says:

Was The Martian really a comedy though?

      • HollandW says:

The book was. At least, that is how I read it. It wasn’t written as a serious drama, that much is for sure. I laughed out loud many times, while reading. Maybe that is why?

      • Pondering thoughts says:

There is such a sub-category as “Tragic Comedy”. Does usually have a happy end.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@V4REal, who wrote: “Was The Martian really a comedy though?”

I saw it twice and both times the audience (myself included) laughed many times. I also laughed many times while reading the book. I agree that the film was ‘not’ a comedy, but perhaps the Foreign Press placed it in the Best Comedy or Musical section because the screenwriter managed to capture the humor in Andy Weir’s novel.

      • AJ says:

There is more comedy in Martian than the Big Short tbh.

  10. Yepisaidit says:

The Leo/ gaga thing was weird. Did she really scare him that much when she bumped his arm or what? That face he made was …weird. Does he think gaga has cooties?

    • Ally8 says:

That’s how he reacts whenever touched by a blonde over the age of 23.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

        🙂

        🙂

        🙂

      • kri says:

        LOLOLOL!!! You win Ally8!

      • V4Real says:

        Perfect reply at Ally 8.

But perhaps he was picturing her wearing that meat suit and no one, not even Leo wants a slab of raw beef brushing up against them.

But in all honesty I think it’s like some have already said, he knew he was busted for laughing at her win.

    • Naya says:

We think he was laughing at her win, she saw him on the monitor and leaned over especially for that brush past, sort of to shade him for his shade. Hence the “oops, busted” look on his face as she passes.

      • HollandW says:

He was joking and laughing, but don’t think about her winning. It could be that she took it as such. She def had plenty of space to walk past him without bumping into his elbow.

      • Tiny Martian says:

Except he wasn’t laughing at her, he was laughing at Matt Damon. I have no idea why she shoved him, but it came across as rude. Maybe she assumed he was laughing at her, because no one should laugh during “her moment”? Or maybe she was just upset that he wasn’t giving her win his full attention.

Regardless, I didn’t read it as a “busted” look, either. I don’t think he realized it was her until he looked up, he just wasn’t paying attention. Once he did notice, it seemed like more of a “WTF?” eyeroll to me.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Yep, I think she shoved him purposefully. It wasn’t as if he had stretched out his arm across the aisle but in order to shove him she had to come quite close.
He just wondered where that shove came from.

Well, Lady Gaga is known for seeking attention …

      • Miss M says:

She shoved him on purpose. You can see she had plenty of space and she leaned her body towards him. She probably assumed that he was laughing at her. Everything is about her, I suppose…

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

Yeah I totally agree with all of you. Personally I love Gaga, but she definitely pushed Leo. Everything I’ve read online so far has made a fuss over him making that face without acknowledging that she totally pushed him on purpose and he made that face in reaction. It seemed to be like she assumed he was laughing at her or she found him being lost in his own conversation to be rude during her big moment.

      • MB says:

Pretty shocked to read that people think she did that on purpose….

Firstly, she just won an award that she couldnt have possibly thought she would have won. She was probably nervous as hell, she had an incredibly long walk from where she was sitting to the stage, she was making her way through the tables of all the big movie and tv stars with a camera right in her face. While we tend to make fun of JLaw for always falling over, I am constantly amazed when award winners manage to keep their shit together without bumping into people and tripping over – I would be freaking out! Im really not sure I can accept, from a logical perspective, that Gaga would be so composed that she not only would be processing Leo’s expression as a reaction to her winning, but also bump into him on purpose as payback. Thats just not realistic.

    • claire says:

She didn’t really ‘bump’ it. She intentionally knocked it out of the way. I thought his face was a hilarious appropriate reaction. She’s insufferable.

  11. lisa2 says:

I just noticed that there were a lot of people NOT clapping for Gaga..

  12. Blackbetty says:

I love Ricky but Americans dont seem to find him funny? I live it when he talks honestly aboyt Hollywood.

    • Shannon1972 says:

I don’t know…I’m American and I just adore him. Just watching the video of his monologue above made me laugh out loud several times. I guess it’s like anything else – people have their own taste in humor. Personally, I will watch him in anything.

    • CornyBlue says:

I know people hate to hear this but British humour and American humour is different. One is not better. it is different.

    • V4Real says:

I’m American and I love his humor.

    • Deedee says:

I like it, but I eat snark for breakfast. 🙂

    • Ash says:

I’m American and couldn’t stop laughing at Ricky’s comments.

Hollywood folks need to get over themselves.

  13. Mandy says:

I thought he was okay. I did miss Tina and Amy! His line about the show being so long and the award not meaning anything got old. And his thing with Mel was just weird!

  14. Nancy says:

I can’t sit through these things anymore, but I did watch his monologue. He is so funny to me and he has the balls to bust the balls of the fancy elite people. I think for the most part he is liked or they wouldn’t keep having him back. He gets the joke….even if he is the butt of some of them.

  15. Esther says:

im all for a lot more snark and mean comments at award shows but Ricky is too much about himself imho. i dont want to hear a comedian talk about how hollywood is oh so scard of him and how mean he is and what else he does. he always talks about not caring what people say but just by the amount of times he says that it shows he cares a lot. he also is constantly retweeting good reviews.

showing Harvey when Ricky talked about companies buying awards was my favourite moment.

    • Miss M says:

My take about him talking about himself is that he cannot go as hard as he wishes to because he was told not too… So, since he cannot do it, he will tell you why he cannot do it. LOL

  16. Louise177 says:

Ricky can be funny but I also feel like he can be mean spirited. Some jokes are uncalled for and seem to be about causing outrage.

The thing I hate about award shows is that so much is taken out of context. Leo could be laughing at anything. Somebody could have just told a joke. It’s unfair to claim it’s about Gaga.

Everytime Brad shaves people claim he has massive amount of plastic surgery. Beards always ages him. Besides wouldn’t surgery last more than a few months? Within a week people will say how old he looks and Angelina sucked the hotness out of him.

    • Tiny Martian says:

I agree with you on most points Louise177, except for regarding Brad. His face really looked off to me. What happened to his wrinkles? All of a sudden he looks younger than Ryan Gosling, who is 17 years younger! I thought he looked really creepy and baby faced…..like Benjamen Button level creepy!

    • Camille says:

Louise177, I agree with you and thought he looked good. People just like to pick on him. If he was looking haggard like Gibson or Depp his detractors would say stuff too. The man can’t win.

      • Rosalee says:

Pitt is a handsome man, but he did look very refreshed. I know 52 year-old men and believe me none look as good or as timeless as Pitt.

  17. Ankhel says:

I personally thought the joke about Jenner and female drivers was insensitive. People love bashing that family, and why not, but Gervais made an ordinary woman’s brutal death part of a joke at a glittery awards show.

    • Anne tommy says:

Good point, ankhel. I find It hard to laugh at Gervaise’s stand up and Unlike a lot of the Audience, it’s not because I’ve had too much Botox.

    • Locke Lamora says:

i think he did just the opposite – he showed how in the adoration Caitlyn ( rightfully) got people forgot she (unintentionally) killed a woman. A woman who wasn’t famous so she can be easily forgotten.

      • AJ says:

Agreed, I’m glad he went there since no one else in celeb world wants to do it. We’re all supposed to pretend like she’s an incredible, amazing person.

      • Ash says:

Same. I thought he making a point about how Caitlyn was let off the hook for unintentionally killing a woman.

  18. CK says:

I thought Ricky Gervais was terrible. I get that we all love it when celebrities get torn a new one, but he barely went after the people in the room. He just picked low hanging 2015 fruit. He was much much better in years past, but it seems they had to defang him and go after everyone else. Also, I found it irritating that folks in the room found the trans and alcoholism jokes hilarious, while turning into little babies when he went at Roman Polanski. Seeing a room full of straight non-trans people being fed trans joke after trans joke just so they can laugh at others and not themselves just killed it for me. Rant over.
I’m happy for Brie Larson, but I think the actors are going to rally around Saoirse Ronan. If she takes the SAG and the Bafta like I suspect, that will probably
push her ahead in the Oscar.
I’m also glad that Leo is getting his Oscar because I’ve had it up to here with all the “It’s a crime that Leo doesn’t have one” nonsense. The guy got nominated and beat multiple times. Career longevity is a reward unto itself. I’m sure he’s great in the Revenant, but I wish his pr would try to sell his performance instead of his “snubs”. So yay, Leo will get an Oscar and that line of thinking will die.

    • CK says:

I probably would have given Gaga’s award to Dunst, but I do appreciate the Globes reveling in perceived irrelevancy, saying f*ck it, and just throwing some major curve balls. It’s a different group of voters with different tastes and it’s nice to see that once and a while. As an avid award’s show watcher, some shockers are always welcome.

    • Lipreng says:

Thank you! The trans phobic trend last night was horrendous. I also found it particularly disturbing how funny everyone found the joke regarding Caitlyn Jenners vehicular manslaughter. It is ridiculous how offended people acted over the Roman Polanski comment. Disgusting.

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

@Lipreng, I agree with you on this. As for how funny people found it, I think the majority of the laughing the celebs do when Gervais is host is nervous laughter in the hopes that he won’t come for them next. They’re all balls-less and afraid of how they’ll be perceived if they call something out for what it is, which in this case was classless.

    • Josefina says:

Agree 100% on Leo. He’s got several nominations for a relatively young guy. Gary Oldman has only been nominated once, and Alan Rickman has never been nominated. Now THAT is a real crime.

Tbh, I’m not really excited for the male actor category this year. Hand it out to Leo and let’s forget about this whole thing already.

      • CK says:

If 2015 didn’t happen, I’d be rooting for Matt Damon to upset. He was looking very delicious as he collected that award though so I’m torn.

  19. Snazzy says:

I just came here to say that I have not yet read one article on the GG coverage – I just saw all the titles about the fashion and THANK YOU writers of CB – they were wonderfully creative and witty ,made me laugh out loud and overall just made my afternoon better 🙂

I will now get back to work and am looking forward to some wonderful reading when I get home this evening 🙂

  20. K says:

Ricky was good, I loved the Ben Affleck bit and thought Matt Damon was funny in how he handled it.

Overall I thought the show was terrible, seemed like almost all the winners were in the back so they couldn’t have time to speak, then they were ill prepared and long. I think Denzel who seemed geniune in his speech and is family is adorable and Brie Larson were the only ones that gave decent speeches.

The bits were terrible the only one I found funny was America and Eva about the names that was great but other wise it felt unrehearsed and terrible.

The Tarentino “ghetto” comment was offensive and I loved the camera guy panning to Regina King’s face and that he was called out on stage right after by Kevin Hart.

  21. Rux says:

I liked Ricky; I liked that he does not care who he offends. Also, I do not care about Mel Gibson but I still poke fun at my husband and call him sugar tits every now again when he is taking too long to get ready.

  22. Adrien says:

Ricky also benefited from the system so why is he acting like he’s some George Carlin of hosting. Also, calling Caitlyn Jenner, Bruce? Really?
I don’t think Gaga deserved her award , such Pia Zadora moment, but I like her character in AHS. She’s very campy. At least now she’s got something Madge doesn’t have – an acting award.

  23. CornyBlue says:

So i heard he called out Weinstein? I missed that. Anyone got any details?

    • Bree says:

Ricky said something in the line of ‘Why wouldn’t actors come to the Golden Globes when their film company already paid for their award’ Then the camera cuts to Weinstein who was laughing hysterically (because what else was he supposed to do lol)

  24. InvaderTak says:

Ricky had about 2 moments that were good and that was it. The problem isn’t that he uses mockery in his humor, the problem is that he isn’t funny enough. He has no nuance, no cleverness about his humor at all. Why don’t they pony up next year and get either Jimmy Carr or David Walliams? Or both? That would be funny IMO and they both know how to host. They’re really famous in the UK, posher accents so no one can claim the Americans won’t understand them. Because seriously, I can’t figure out why/how Ricky got the job in the first place or why he keeps getting rehired.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I nominate Franki Boyle to host the Golden Globes in 2017.

      • InvaderTak says:

Lol that would really get the job done and be funny for sure but I don’t think he’d be able to because of his fear of flying. Have to put him on a boat over here lol

  25. Bree says:

You forgot the ending when the credits where rolling, Ricky: “From myself and Mel Gibson, Shalom”

  26. Daria Morgendorffer says:

I think he’s great. What a breath of fresh air. At the end of the day, the ridiculousness of it all needs to be considered. This is a room full of multi-millionaires giving each other awards and blowing smoke up each other’s asses. They need a presence like Ricky Gervais to come through and bring them back down to reality.

I like the celebrity BS just as much as the next, but the god-like status that actors are granted IS ridiculous. While the rest of us go out into the real world, they get paid millions to pretend to be other people for a living.

I love his joke about Jennifer Lawrence, which might get me some hate here. He had a real point when noting that she makes millions. I totally respect her and agree that she has a right to earn as much as men and even more and it is astounding to learn that sexism in the workplace and pay inequity is an issue women are faced with across the board. But it can also be a bitter pill to swallow when so many women in the real world are struggling to keep food on the table or clothes on their children’s backs. I’m just saying.

Award shows and celebrity worship in general is all undeniably pretty silly. Gervais only points that out when he hosts.

  27. Saks says:

My favourite presenters were Eva Longoria and America Ferrera.

Yaassssss for Gael García Bernal winning for Mozart in the Jungle!!!! I’m happy for Alejandro G.Iñárritu for best director, say whatever you like but he is an outstanding director (Yet I’d have love Spotlight to take Best Movie award).

And for the ones I think shouldn’t have won:
    – Kate Winslet
    – Jennifer Lawrence
    – Lady Gaga
    – the boring song from Spectre
    – The Revenant as best movie, I think Spotlight is a better movie as whole.
    – The Martian & Matt Damon (The martian is not a comedy and although the movie was great his performance was average)

    • Daria Morgendorffer says:

“Yaassssss for Gael García Bernal winning for Mozart in the Jungle!!!”

This, completely. Love him and that show.

    • me says:

I too enjoyed Eva and America. They were funny yet classy. By the way I am enjoying America’s new show “Superstore”. It’s funny and different.

    • Crumbedtofu says:

Winslet and Lawrence have had way too much and both are mediocre actors who do similar things in every film.

  28. Love-ricky says:

Kate swindler is obsessed with buddying up to the boys and never ever mentions her female colleagues, whether it’s Leo or fassbender or whomever, she’s just that girl…we all know one.

  29. Olenna says:

Someone sent me this link to a clip from Ricky’s HBO show, Extras. Sometimes it helps to laugh when you feel like crying. RIP, Mr. Bowie.
    http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2016/01/11/david_bowie_s_hilarious_extras_segment_video.html

  30. me says:

It seemed as if everyone was giggling throughout the show. What happened during the commercials? It seems as if that’s when the real funny sh*t went down.

I can’t stand him. I don’t get why people suddenly feel so bad about ass kissing in award shows. Eh, they are hanging out awards? Celebrating people and kissing their asses is more or less the point? That’s like complaining about violence in boxing matches.

I’m all for celebs getting reality checked, but I hate to see Ricky Gervais seen as some kind of hero. He’s an overpaid actor as well, and he’s got one of the most inflated egos of the room. Go check his twitter. This guy loves reading people but he HATES to be read.

Totally agree. Maybe that’s why he gets such as negative reaction from the audience; because they don’t have a chance to make a response. That’s what’s so much fun about the brit panel shows and chat shows; the banter. It’s not an attack that the stars just have to take like this can be. This format can work but it needs someone funnier and more clever than RG.

  32. Keaton says:

Ricky’s manner is really smug and irritating to me. But he legit made me howl with laughter several times during the show. As the night went on the celebs seemed more and more smug, insider’sh self-congratulatory and I was more and more on Ricky’s side. I laughed so hard at that Ben Affleck joke.

  33. Crumbedtofu says:

He was a bit flat and not offensive at all. I suspect they had a big list of actors you can’t touch (people ringing up in advance and threatening to boycott) so the organisers gave him the list. He was funnier in previous years when he had carte blanche.

  34. sweetpea says:

Oh I disagree about the Mel Gibson business – Ricky was spot on there – totally uneven elsewhere I aggree but I liked his beginning bit – It should be awkward for Mel Gibson – he is an anti-semite with a holocaust denying father. Sorry – but I’m glad that wasn’t easy for Mel Gibson…Staying till the end and hearing Ricky Gervais say – ” From myself and Mel Gibson I say Shalom” was priceless

    • Crumbedtofu says:

That’s hilarious. Mel Gibson presenting to make it seem like he can laugh at himself (when we know he has mental health issues and I don’t say that in a mean spirited way) was weird.

      • sweetpea says:

But Bigotry isn’t a mental health issue – its an asshole issue

      • Crumbedtofu says:

True, and no excuses, but I do think he’s an alcoholic and has addiction issues. I’m just saying he needs professional help AND to take responsibility for / be called out for his repugnant views.

I love Rickys jokes in this over PC culture of ours.

  36. Kym says:

    Love him.

  37. La La Land says:

Unfunny, annoying, stick up his snarky, pig faced, tiny peen-arse thinks drinking a pint is cool and tee hee funny … like ooh I’m British and cool!

    B****
gtfo … the US. England take him back. I implore you!

AND THE THING IS I AM THE ONLY ONE SAYING ANYTHING REMOTELY NEGATIVE OVER THIS BARF. THIS MUST BE HELL!
WHERE IS YOUR INTEL AND GOOD TASTE IN ROBUST COMEDY LADIES??

I DON’T GET IT … I just don’t get it (head shaking downward)

  38. SashimiV says:

Ricky is AWESOME!! These egomaniacs have zero sense of humor. Get over yourselves.

  39. jinx says:

Loved all of it. Have to say it’s one of the best award shows I’ve seen in a long time. It had it’s mix of wow’s and wtf’s all wrapped in a big bundle of fancy dresses and smug faces. I paused the show when the camera panned over the audience and it was hilarious to see the mix of peoples reactions – a lot of them were bored, talked and laughed while certain people were presenting – but I loved how Jim Carey came out – everyone was focused on him with smiles so good for Jim. He had everyone’s attention unlike a lot of other people. I think my biggest wtf moment was the results for best comedy – even the people who hauled themselves on stage to get that award were like – for best comedy? really?? Hell, we’ll take it.

  40. Blip says:

    My favourite bits:

    1. Gervais calling the awards for what they actually are and Harvey Weinstein’s reaction to it.

    2. Caitlyn Jenner breaking down female stereotypes but not doing much for women drivers. Fantastic.

    3. Ocean’s Eleven and Ghostbusters remakes being made for less money because of a female cast. Insanely good, so on point.

I find Gervais grating a lot of the time but he’s getting so good at hosting this event.

  41. Mrs. Darcy says:

I’ve only seen clips online because I’m in the U.K. I thought the monologue lacked pace, was stilted and awkward, and Ricky was shrinking into his persona too much. His best GG’s zingers in the past were more dazzling in their un-flinching ness. His repetitive remarks like “I don’t care, don’t give a f- etc” took away his power and were unnecessary. I think he knew he was never going to have the room but he could have told a few more general Hollywood jokes to get the atmosphere less defensive. It was fun seeing Brad Pitt and Matt Damon crack up despite themselves, but there was a very precious china cups vibe from most of the crowd that was super lame to watch/ actually made me wish Ricky had really gone for it.

  42. KCat says:

He had me cracking up. I have no sympathy for Mel Gibson.

  43. Me ThreeI says:

The only good part about these way tooooooo many awards shows is when the host is at least a little bit funny. Have to admit I’m over these kind of shows. Maybe it’s just that there are too many. Maybe it’s that I find it galling how much these over paid celebs are making, many for movies that tank. All I know is that it seems like they spend most of their time applauding each other for their or so difficult lives as actors. Way too many awards shows! I don’t even watch them for the fashion anymore. Don’t have to since I can come here and see what everyone wore. And, to continue on with my rant…most of the fashions were blah. Meh!
