Melania Trump: ‘I’m very political. I’m not political in public, I’m political at home’

melania us weekly

Donald and Melania Trump cover the new issue of Us Weekly. I know a lot of serious politicos are tearing out their hair about Trump’s lead in the polls, but I find myself remarkably ambivalent about all of it. My thought is… it’s not over ‘till it’s over. Maybe Trump will end up the GOP nominee and maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll end up going down in flames as soon as people actually start casting ballots. Maybe the GOP chickens are coming home to roost on this one. Personally, I think the idea of “First Lady Melania Trump” is kind of hilarious. I don’t even think she understands what’s going on – it’s not that she’s stupid (well…), it’s that she doesn’t really care about whatever Donald is doing. Here’s Us Weekly’s interview with Melania:

Among Donald Trump’s army of advisers is a Slovenia-bred former model. In the new issue of Us Weekly, the Republican presidential front-runner’s wife, Melania, reveals she offers him tips on how to handle his campaign.

“I give him ideas and I give him my opinions,” says the 45-year-old designer of QVC’s Melania Timepieces & Fashion Jewelry line. “Some stuff he listens to.”

And though the mom to Barron, 9, declines to give her take on political issues — “That’s my husband’s job, I leave that to him” — she says she often talks shop with the 69-year-old.

“I’m very political,” she tells Us. “I’m not political in public, I’m political at home.”

Melania adds that she’s not just a “yes woman” to the real estate magnate, known for his controversial positions, including his call to bar all Muslims from enter America.

“Do I agree with everything he says? No,” she admits. “I have my own opinions too, and I tell him that. Sometimes he takes it in and listens and sometimes he doesn’t. But it is who he is, I don’t want to change him. He’s an adult, he knows what the consequences could be.”

[From Us Weekly]

“But it is who he is, I don’t want to change him. He’s an adult, he knows what the consequences could be.” It’s like she’s talking about her child, not her husband. And Melania talks the same way Donald does: in vague platitudes and soundbytes, never offering actual opinions and thoughts on policy. Donald’s big thing is “I’ll be great on ~~~.” Melania’s thing is “I talk to him about stuff. We talk all the time.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is still butthurt about Megyn Kelly, so he’s not going to participate in Thursday night’s Fox News/Google-sponsored debate. Trump originally said he would do the debate if Megyn Kelly was thrown out, but Fox News stuck by their Golden Girl and so Trump canceled. And now Fox News sources are pouring out rage at Trump to every media outlet, talking about his pettiness towards Kelly.

I have to wonder how this works for her, cause yes she is dumb, OBVI he is repulsive and giving her money but like how does this work, Her side boy on staff or is he kept somewhere else? and she just does her nails/hair/ works out/ minds the little Lordling Lunch with Donald and then gets her back blown out by a big sexy ruski named Sergei by 6:00pm EST??

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yep. That about sums it up.

    • GreenieWeenie says:

I don’t know if it’s the wine, but this strikes me as the funniest comment ever.

    • Esmom says:

I can’t imagine any other arrangement, to be honest.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I feel like she’s staring into my soul in that last picture. Sergei is her assistant/pool boy/equestrian trainer who saved her from the snow storm by putting his arms around her. They will definitely run away if Trump doesn’t win, if he does (god lord please don’t) they’re stuck living in the white house all together.

      • CL says:

I scrolled back up to see the last picture and for some reason thought “I wonder if that’s her sex face” and now I can’t stop giggling.

      • GreenieWeenie says:

is it me or does she look like a cat? The kind of cat that just sits there staring at you creepily while you sleep?

      • JenniferJustice says:

Header photo reminds me of that classic painting depicting narcissism where the the women in the background is gazing longingly at her lover but the lover can’t pull himself away from staring at his own reflection in the water. If I didn’t know Trump was looking at the photog, I’d swear he was staring at himself in a mirror.

    • Kitten says:

I feel like Trump wouldn’t allow Melania to have a sidepiece. That would be a violation of their contractual agreement as Sergei would pose a threat to Trump’s perceived virility/masculinity.

    • Lilacflowers says:

She has staff to mind the lordling. And with The Donald on the campaign trail, she has more time for Sergei. It’s all good.

    • KB says:

Lol and that is my favorite comment of the day.

    • Goo says:

Dumb? Might want to do a little research before stating things that are NOT fact.

    • Petra says:

Melania is not very likeable and you can see why Trump is hiding her as she is not good for his image. I actually think Trump will win the GOP nomination and possibly the presidency.

  2. Miss Grace Jones says:

I just don’t believe that Trump or his team actually want him to be president they just want validation for their racist xenophobic views. I can’t realistically imagine him getting the actual presidency and honestly his whole campaign seems like a dog and pony show to distract from some of the shadier democrats like Hillary Clinton. His campaign is like something out of a political satire and I just can’t look at it realistically? It’s like a really long drawn out joke. As for his wife she’s full of hot air.

    • Luca76 says:

I would have agreed with you months ago but he’s in a double digit lead in New Hampshire which is only a few weeks away. His narcissism lets him believe he’s capable of being president. Now the idiots who are voting for him? The Republican Party as a whole? They need to do some self assessment about how they’ve let this blowhard ignorant racist be their new mascot.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

While I’d prefer Bernie to Hillary, given that Hillz and the Trump ( & Bill Clinton, to boot) have long been friends, I am beginning to wonder if Trump is a double agent for the Dems, a straw man candidate. His viewpoints have long been quite liberal, it is difficult to believe he now truly espouses the opposite points of view. I think he’s just effing over the Republican party- even paid the Tundra Twit to stump for him to steal support from Cruz, whipping up the insanity of the Tea Party base, and forcing the majority of the big R players to publicly claim they would support him were he the R nominee. I think he is gleefully playing an incredibly deviously brilliant divisive role.

It’s a win/win- Bernie(!) or Hillary, Democratic White House/liberal SC appointments. And a Trump win would be the same, regardless of the hoo ha he spouts while stumping.

There is an anti-Trump ad out now that shows snippets of interviews over the years wherein he speaks highly of Hillz, and of being pro-choice, anti-gun and as liberal as the day is long. I really think he’s pulling a fast one on many, many people.

      • Lama Bean says:

The double agent for the Dems has always been my theory.

I also don’t think he actually wants to be president. I think he just wants to win.

      • Tina says:

I read a story a while ago that said that Bill Clinton had a phone call with Trump in which he encouraged him to run. Bill denied it of course, but I can absolutely see that happening. It’s a good strategy. Bill has his flaws, but he is a superlative politician and a very smart man.

  3. aims says:

All I can say is Bernie Sanders 2016!

On a side note, I went over to visit my dad on Sunday. His neighbor across the street had a Trump supporter sign in his front yard. I said rather loudly, ” oh my god!!!” In disgust. I cannot believe anyone would want to support this maniac.

    • Miss Grace Jones says:

Have you seen that video of the little girl sobbing in joy because her mom was taking her to see him in person? Now *that* was terrifying.

      • aims says:

I did Miss Grace. It was horrifying. I can’t wrap my head around Trump or his supporters. It makes zero sense to me.

      • Nikki says:

It IS terrifying. My landscaping nursery has a picture of Trump on the wall. I assumed it was a joke, so I just said, “Can you imagine how he’d deal with foreign policy?” And the guy said,”Well, it couldn’t be much worse, could it?” And started saying why he likes the Donald. This may be petty of me, but I told my husband I won’t go there again. Bernie.

    • Esmom says:

Someone in my neighborhood has one and I gasped when I saw it. It was originally on the lawn but now it’s on the inside of the front window — I’m guessing it probably wasn’t safe from pranksters outside. Really they might as well have a sign saying “Idiots live here.”

    • Alex says:

Gross. I have a sticker that says 2016 idk…not Trump though. Cause honestly if there’s anything that is making the world WTF at us right now its the fact that he is the lead.

      • Goo says:

No, the rest of the world is saying WTF were you all thinking 7 years ago…

      • Jib says:

@Goo, really??? When Bush left, the world hated us, we were involved in two wars still, and leaders though Bush was the idiot that we know him to be. Obama has gotten us out of wars, and is respected by leaders across the world. Just because a certain percentage of the US is racist and hates him doesn’t mean we made a mistake. At all.

      • Nic919 says:

The rest of the world is saying that Obama brought the US back on track and while it is not a perfect country, it will be a mess if Trump is president. No way the Donald actually wants to put the work required to be president.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Goo–the rest of the world was ecstatic when we elected President Obama.

    • LadyMTL says:

A friend and I were talking about Trump last week and we were laughing, because she’s Latina and I’m Arab (albeit not Muslim)…we were like “he’d kick us both out of the country, wouldn’t he?”

Though we were lol’ing about it, it is quite scary to consider how many people really do support him. I’m not even American and I cringe at the very thought of President Trump.

      • aims says:

It would be hysterical if it weren’t so scary. I cannot believe he’s gotten this far. He’s openly hateful to anyone who isn’t a white rich man. I think it’s so telling how out of touch the republican party is.

    • Kitten says:

I love Bernie for his liberalism but he lost me along the way. Some of his proposals are…unrealistic. I’m sad to say that I’ve lost the confidence that I had in his leadership.

That being said, I still like him the best of the bunch, which really isn’t saying much. There is no candidate that I’m truly, genuinely excited/enthusiastic about. There’s nobody who represents my liberal ideals while having the experience and fortitude necessary to work within the constraints imposed by the GOP.

I see Sanders as being another Obama in the sense that he’ll get blocked at every turn and won’t be tough enough (moderate enough?) to hold his own. I could be wrong, but that’s where I’m at right now.

      • aims says:

For me Bernie is the only one that excites me. Because out of everyone I believe he’s honest . When he speaks he means what he says.

I also feel that Bernie would get blocked by his opposition.

      • Kitten says:

Totally understandable. I really admire Bernie’s passion and authenticity too, aims. I’m just not 100% confident that he can stay strong in what is such a volatile and divisive political climate.

      • AntiSocialButterfly says:

I think he is the best, fairest, and most just candidate, but sadly is too revolutionary in his ideas to get anything done for precisely this reason. Implementation would be impossible with a House continuing to be held by (R)s.

      • aims says:

I definitely understand what you’re saying about being bulldozed. Bernie is such a nice man and so is Obama for that matter.

It’s frustrating for me that people put their political party ahead of the health and well-being of the country.

      • K says:

A big difference between Sanders and Obama (apart from Sanders’ long public record) is that Obama was beholden to the large lobby groups due to their campaign contributions. That is partially the reason for the deficiencies in the ACA. Ultimately, he wasn’t free to upset the applecart that much. Congress was obstructionist as well, of course.

Sanders wouldn’t be indebted to the same large groups.

      • isabelle says:

Think we’ve been fooled into thinking his ideas aren’t possible. Through media, corporate thought and how politics works here. Most of Europe runs on the ideas he supports. It would be hard for him to pass things but he has been in Congress for a very long time and probably has more support than Obama did or will. Voting for him even if it’s a lost vote, cause seriously he’ll probably be the only peoples candidate I’ll ever get to for in my lifetime. Do hope Bernie supporters calm down in Hilary bashing. She isn’t a horrible choice and some of his supporters are making her out to be worse than Trump.

      • Luca76 says:

I don’t support Bernie and I don’t think I’ve been fooled. I just think strategically he is the wrong choice. I also think the Clintons are damn good at governing no matter what their faults. I wish there was a more viable candidate but I think anyone who believes that Sanders is viable in a national election is fooling themselves. Right now Sanders seems OK to the general public but that’s because they don’t know much about him. When people say they’d vote for Hillary they actually mean it. Love her or hate her she’s been more vetted than any candidate ever.

      • isabelle says:

@luka I probably should have worded my statement better. Didn’t mean non-Bernie voters were being fooled just meant we’ve been fooled into thinking some social programs won’t work or can be implemented. Corporations (especially insurance companies and pharm companies) profit from us not having them. So they lobby against reform and sale too us its impossible. Bernie or no Bernie, they will continue to do this. Totally understand why some people wouldn’t vote for Bernie and Hillary is the more sensible candidate. Definitely voting for Hilary is she is the elected Democrat.

      • Petra says:

Bernie is well meaning but on some issues he has no idea. I’m not American and I live in a country where we used to have basically “free” university. (When I attended university it cost $300 a year for tuition in total and the government paid me $100 a week just to go). It was a disaster. It created “professional students” who would enrol in degree after degree and others who would just flunk courses all over the place. They didn’t care because they didn’t have to pay for it. There were people repeating the same subjects because they kept failing 3 times – they didn’t care, they weren’t paying. Also free university means not means tested and there was a guy at university who’s father was worth $300 million and he still got his free university course. I think university should be cheaper in the US – like $7,000 a year for tuition. But it should never be free. If Bernie is up against Trump, Trump will be President of the US. Bernie is too left wing.

    • isabelle says:

Well I’m a Bernie fan but people think the same things about us.

  4. MelissaManifesto says:

I hate to judge a woman by only her looks/body, but try as I might I can only see Melania Trump as ONLY a trophy wife. She was a beautiful, successful (?) model who married a rich man, a story that has existed since the beginning of time. She wears expensive clothes (nothing wrong with that), she’s tweaked to almost oblivion, but I don’t see her with the grace of Jackie O or the chicness and smarts of Michelle O. I really just can’t and I so desperately want to…

    • Esmom says:

Agreed, a woman of substance she is not. At least she’s not pretending, in the way that Sarah Palin does as she tries to convince us she is informed and intelligent.

    • V4Real says:

And there’s a reason she’s not political in public. The engine is running but there’s noone behind the wheel.

      • Kitten says:

LOL. Exactly. Who does she think she’s fooling? Although, I suppose Trump’s followers are used to suspending disbelief.

    • Amelie says:

My take on Melania is different. She speaks five languages and studied design & architecture at the university level while building her modeling career in Slovenia. She emigrated to the U.S. and continued her career in modeling-apparently successfully. IMO, she is much more her own woman based on what she has accomplished-on her own merits-This contrasts with women who for example marry/hitch their wagon to a Hollywood star as a way of getting ahead.

Re: Trump, I will say this, his success is a reaction to what career politicians haven’t done…I don’t know what will happen in the election, but I wish everyone who is running would listen more to what the electorate is saying and revisit what the concept of governance is per the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

      • MelissaManifesto says:

Thanks Amelie! I didn’t know any of that about her, but her public persona is so bimbo/trophy wife-y. I just don’t see why Trump’s people wouldn’t capitalize on her background to forge her a decent public image.

      • Nikki says:

I also thank you, Amelie. Very interesting!

      • Locke Lamora says:

But that’s why it’s so baffling. Why would a woman from a prosperous background, from a prosperous country who is successful in her own right marry Trump. It does not make sense.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

See, I didn’t know any of that about her. That is interesting.

      • V4Real says:

“My take on Melania is different. She speaks five languages and studied design & architecture at the university level while building her modeling career in Slovenia. She emigrated to the U.S. and continued her career in modeling-apparently successfully”

See I did know this about her. I read her Wiki page as well. She studied design & architecture but never finished. We also don’t know how far she got with her education. Maybe it was too difficult for her so she took another path. She was a model but not a household name. She was smart enough to hitch her wagon to Donald Trump’s star. She accomplished her goal. She’s a trophy wife and that’s pretty much it.

Let’s not forget that George W. Bush went to Harvard. Did that make him smart? He was a C- student.

      • Lama Bean says:

Amelie, I agree with your assessment of Trump’s success. I also think Bernie’s success is due to the same thing (and disdain for Hillary). The only difference is one is talking xenophobia and demagoguery and the other is talking about equality and fairness.

And, I just realized Donald and Melania look just alike. Both have that squinty eye smizing-not smizing look.

      • Amelie says:

        V4Real, Et al

Trump has provided information about his wife in interviews; Wiki is not my only source. I don’t know why questions about whether she completed her studies or not are an issue. I have personally known numerous people who were smart enough to get into college, but didn’t finish for whatever reason. Famous examples of this are Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. They did pretty well without the old sheepskin!

IMO, Trump is not dumb. It has been fascinating to watch him over the months. He has managed to position himself as the candidate to catch. I have also watched the more traditional candidates scurry to catch up with him and frankly piggy-back on issues that appear to garner him support.

Bob Gates has a new book out on leadership and he is making the talk show rounds promoting it. He has identified a list of characteristics for leaders which folks could apply to the candidates. IMO, none of the front runners have the right stuff, but that’s just my opinion, although Rand Paul comes close.

      • V4Real says:

I think we all know Gates and Mark didn’t finish college. Mark is actually from the area I work in.

But I still think Melania is not that bright and nothing more than a trophy wife.
Mark Z. is from the area I work in. I’m willing to bet if you match her wits against Mark and Gates, they will come out on top every time.

And even smart people can show their ignorance as Trump has.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@v4real, actually W went to Yale, probably as a legacy, and was assigned tutors to help him get those grades. He went to Harvard B school to get out of his military stint early. He was at the B school at the same time as Rimney and rumors are Romney helped him with the course work while he hung out at a country western bar.

      • DTX says:

Are we really comparing MELANIA TRUMP to Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg??!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Every time she opens her mouth, she confirms how simple she really is. She never says anything of substance, even if it’s not political. She just says superficial, completely vague things. Like when they asked her for advice on making a marriage work she said, “Separate bathrooms, that is key” with a straight face. She was not being cheeky…she is just hopelessly (and albeit harmlessly) DUMB. I don’t hate her though, I don’t doubt that she could probably be quite pleasant IRL, but I’m not going to go around labeling a f8ck*n rocket scientist either. Let’s face it…she could never go toe to toe on ANY political matter with any of our current or former first ladies. Maybe only with Sarah Palin, LOL

      • Locke Lamora says:

How do you go to college as a legacy? What does that mean? Pretty sure there’s nothing like that in Slovenija.

  5. Peanutbuttr says:

Reminds me of that quote from Sex and the City. “I’m literary. I read. I’ll sit down and read a whole magazine from cover to cover.”

  6. OSTONE says:

At first I thought this clown was going to be our side show. We joked about it at first, then we got #1 in the polls and a lot of people were already calling him President Trump. Which is crazy! What does it say about us as a society? I not laughing anymore. This dude could be our next president.

    • Esmom says:

I understand your disgust and panic but I honestly think he can’t win. If Romney and McCain couldn’t, then I really don’t think he can. I’m guessing many of his supporters couldn’t find their polling place if it smacked them in the face.

    • Alex says:

Good thing is Sanders is polling ahead of Trump currently. The thing that will screw us is if Dems don’t vote because they are butthurt over their candidate losing.

      • Esmom says:

Even if their candidate loses, I don’t think Dems would not support the nominee just because they’re hurt. They’ll know how critical their votes are.

      • BendyWindy says:

I can’t stress how important this election is. Justice Ginsburg will likely be retiring. I don’t want Trump picking the next Supreme Court judge. I hope the Dems show up, regardless of who the nominee is.

      • Luca76 says:

Honestly as much as I like Sanders it would be a disaster if he gets nominated (and I’ve been familiar with him for years because he lives in a neighboring state and he used to do a lot of interviews on our public radio). because Micheal Bloomberg whose a moderate billionaire would enter as a third party candidate and eat up the independents. Then we’d get President Cruz if we are lucky (Trump makes him look sane but he’s almost as bad) or God forbid Trump.

I think strategically Hillary is the candidate to rally behind. It’s great to push her to the left but I think Sanders supporters have the potential to do the same damage Nader supporters did in 2000.

    • Luca76 says:

He’s not #1 in National polls. He’s number one in the Republican Party. Hilary trounces him. Unless Bernie gets nominated and then Bloomberg steps in. Then we get President Trump.

    • kanyekardashian says:

Relax, he doesn’t stand a chance of being president. O’Malley will drop out at some point and Bernie or Hillary is all Trump would have left to battle as the nominee. He can’t win against either of them.

      • LNG says:

But, as Luca76 said above, if Bernie is the democratic nominee then Bloomberg will likely run as an independent and the votes will be split – ensuring a republican victory.

  7. Tiffany says:

So when he attacked Megan after the first go round, she was sent on vacation to appease him. Now that he is affecting their bottom line, of him attacking her again, it is they are going to support her. Nope, not transparent at all Fox News.

    • Nick says:

I’m not sure your point but I think the ratings for the debate would be higher if Trump participated. So by not having Trump attend (rightfully standing up for their employees), Fox News’ bottom will be negatively affected.

      • V4Real says:

What they should have done was found another moderator to replace her so Trump would be in attendance. But unbeknownst to him the replacement moderator would ask him even tougher questions than she did.

  8. doofus says:

so much SQUINT in that pic.

wtf about him ditching the debate? so, he can’t face tough (ahem) questions from a “journalist”…how is he going to handle other world leaders? congressmen? judges? cabinet members? “yer a loosah and I don’t talk to loosahs!”

he is such a wimp…can’t handle questions about his own behavior or when asked for details of his plans on anything. just “takes his ball and goes home” like the little whiny b*tch that he is.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

      +1234569….

    • Kitten says:

ITA, Doofus. What about this man screams “leadership” or “strength”?
He’s just a petulant, insecure brat.

      • doofus says:

what kills me is that his camp released a statement of how this “shows guts”.

NO, IT DOES NOT. it shows that he’s a scaredy-cat. if he had “guts”, he’d show up to face her questioning.

he’s trying to dictate format/moderators and, FOR ONCE, he’s getting push-back and he doesn’t know how to handle it other than run away and declare himself the winner.

  9. minx says:

Trump guarantees a Democratic president, so, I’m good with that.

  10. Naya says:

I cant mock Melanias mind. However stupid she is, its pretty clear that the Donald is the real dumb bell in the family.

  11. Sid says:

Who’s worse? Her or Georgina Chapman?

    • GreenieWeenie says:

omg. I play Lainey’s game of Picture Him On Top Of You and just…how, womankind. How do we find ourselves here. You know Weinstein has zero redeeming qualities too.

  12. Pants says:

Considering that Fox is *the* network for the republican side, it’s actually kind of stupid for him to alienate them and have them talking smack about him to the constituency he’s targeting. But what do I know? Keep it up, Trumpy.

    • Dom says:

I agree. This makes me think that if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination he will run as an Independent. Even though he said he wouldn’t. The idea of Trump as POTUS really freaks me out. He made some kind of comment about his dedicated supporters and how he could do no wrong in their eyes, that he could shoot someone and they would still support him. I know he wasn’t being serious but, what the…? I think that that comment speaks volumes on his character.

    • Naya says:

Nah. Fox has always asserted that the “media” is controlled by the political establishment and that has been their basis for the claim that they are “fair and balanced”. Trump is just bringing their own argument full circle. If the media runs the agenda of the political elite and Fox is a media outlet, then Fox runs the agenda of the political elite. So now Fox viewers are questioning the Fox agenda and Trump is capitalizing. I assume these “discerning viewers” will switch off and start getting their news from cray-cray Youtube channels and blogs.

Dear God let him win that nomination. It all but guarantees a Republican defeat.

  13. Marjalane says:

For those of you that think Trump can’t or won’t or shouldn’t win- Get out there and DO something; Vote for another GOP candidate when it’s your state’s primary. ANYTHING. I can’t believe how many people are 100% behind this fool, and they are crazy and organized. The apathy towards voting at all in 2016 will be over the top if it’s Hillary and Trump- they’re both awful. but Trump is crazy, and has the emotional maturity of a six year old bully.

    • V4Real says:

Hilary might not be the cream of the crop but at least she has experience in politics and knows how to run a campaign without acting like a 14 year old bully. Trump is dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to politics. He should just stick to what he’s good at and that’s business. Then again he did file a few bankruptcies.

      • Kitten says:

        Absolutely.

      • doofus says:

but he’s not even good at business. besides the bankruptcies that you mention, some financial analyst did an analysis of his wealth now vs. what he would have had if he had simply left his inheritance where it was and not invested in anything, including all of his real estate.

spoiler: he would have had more had he not done anything with it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He is not good at business and his wealth comes from inherited real estate holdings, which will always generate substantial revenue, enough to pull him about the bankruptcies his bad business decisions create.

Like Hillary or not the two shouldn’t be compared.

  14. BNA Fn says:

Anyone noticed her right fist is clinched shut? I’m guessing she must be repulsed to touch him.

  15. Crocuta says:

What I find amazing about Melania is that while her English is still only so-so (for a person living in the US for more than a decade), she forgot how to speak Slovenian as well. I saw her interview a couple of years ago and she sounded like she was struggling. I get it that you can forget your language if you always speak another one, but with her English does that mean she doesn’t speak any language fluently at all?

    • Nic919 says:

Well if you cross reference where Wikipedia says that she speaks five languages, it says she speaks “Austrian “. And that same website has her born in 1974 and 2 inches shorter than Melania’s own website.

She was smart by marrying a rich guy and having a kid to lock down child support if he cheats on her. Not much else smart about her.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Someone has fixed the Wiki entry to read German instead of Austrian. Which makes me wonder: does she really speak German fluently, or were they referring to the Slovak in error (as it is spoken in southern Austria.)
Also, linguistically Slovak and Serbian are very closely related.
        Just interesting stuff to observe.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Slovenian, not Slovak ( Slovak is from Slovakia). Serbian and Slovenian are maybe linguastuically close, but completely different languages. Serbian is similar to Croatian and Bosnian.

      • Crocuta says:

Well, since both her English and Slovenian are clumsy, I wouldn’t put much faith in her French and German. I think she has Serbian listed because all Slovenian people of her age had to learn Serbo-Croatian in school so everybody speaks at least a bit of what is today Serbian and Croatian. But that’s far from fluent usually. Although people like to brag they speak Serbian and then do some mish-mash of Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian and hand gestures.

  16. Joni says:

So she’s just as vile as he is? Got it.

  17. GreenieWeenie says:

Why is he so patchy looking on the cover? Is this fake tan wearing off, or are the cells in his skin collapsing under the damage accumulated over whole years spent in sun beds?

  18. Nikki says:

I can’t STAND Trump, but I don’t understand why her comment was so bad. Whether it’s your spouse OR an adult child, people are entitled to their own opinions, which may or may not agree with yours. To me, this is a healthy attitude. I think you express YOUR opinion, but the other person should be free to disagree. Hopefully a married couple share the same basic values, though, or they’ll have a rocky road deeply disapproving of each other..

  19. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

    God Bless Melania.

Like many immigrants I know she’s doing a job a U.S. citizen wouldn’t touch and for not NEARLY enough pay considering how disgusting the labor is.

  20. Jaded says:

My boyfriend, who’s American (I’m Canadian), has an interesting take on Trump’s run for POTUS. He’s in the race merely as a figurehead or cheerleader for the uber-right-wing Republicans, to stir the pot and ignite massive media coverage because, let’s face it, he’s Donald Trump and he does and says outrageous things that generate a massive amount of attention. At the end of the day, though, he’s a businessman who wants to continue making billions of dollars and doing business – he won’t be happy on a President’s salary or living such a restricted life. He knows that he won’t actually become President, but is doing a great job rallying the most strident Republican base with his idiotic rhetoric.

    Thoughts?

    • Maggie says:

Canadian here. I agree for the most part with your comment. I find Trump to be very pro American and bang on regarding the Middle East however he lacks a filter and becomes overly emotional. That’s when he says idiotic statements. He’s manipulating the election like its a reality show.

      • Amelie says:

As I have watched Trump, IMO, he was initially in the race to influence current policy. Per some of his earlier interviews, I think he questioned whether he could win the nomination etc. But, as things have evolved, IMO he is now REALLY running. But, the question is, what will happen at the GOP convention? I think there is likely to be a lot of back room maneuvering to avoid giving him electoral votes.

    • Luca76 says:

Respectfully I say Nope. To simplify this the big money on the Republican side would have gladly had Trump be a kingmaker campaigning and doing media appearances to rev up the base but he’s trouncing their candidates (Christie and Bush etc). This is why The National Review and Fox are basically s***tting themselves and begging for anyone but Trump or Ted Cruz to get the nomination.

  21. Tessd says:

I’m from Eastern Europe and Melania is what many women of our culture aspire to be – a dumb fox as you call it in the US.
Melania was never an actual super model in the same league as say, Heidi Klum. She left her native country as many models do because that’s what her job required her to do and eventually landed in the US. The only known modeling pictures of her that are circulating online are either nude or the swim suit kind. If she had been busier, there would be more of her work available. She had never done a cover until she met Donald and became his official girlfriend.
Now, Eastern European women are raised with the idea that a truly smart woman knows how to make her man think he is the boss in the family while she’s enjoying the money and security he provides for her. Keeping up appearances of an adoring wife, looking beautiful and living the life of luxury. Donald might be a terrible husband or an OK one – how many fantastic husbands are really out there? – she is the only one who decides if this is something she can live with and clearly she can. She got everything SHE (not every woman) wanted – a son and tons of money with not a single financial worry for the rest of her life. Voila! She is a dumb fox!

I don’t think she believes he will win. She probably doesn’t care either way – it’s not like she can stop him. Do you know what Jackie Kennedy (who wasn’t keen on the idea of becoming a First Lady and everything it entailed) said about her husband running for President? Something along the lines of “if I didn’t let him he’d be like a tiger in a cage…” I bet Melania knows exactly what Jackie meant.

    • DTX says:

I think you are right. I loathe Trump but she seems harmless to me, as she seems pretty content to be a rich man’s trophy wife living in the lap of luxury with future firmly secured. She has already accomplished her dream so she is very “meh” on being anything else, especially if it involves the work required with being a first lady. I don’t think she’s really counting on having to do it but doesn’t want to rock the boat with her crazy husband.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Well, I’m from a country next to SLovenia and you’r completelly wrong and quite offensive. We are not raised that way at all. Maybe Melanija is, but most of us are not. Also, Slovenia is a Central Europan country or Southeastern European if you really strech it.

  22. isabelle says:

She is morphing into him, they look alike.

  23. Giddy says:

I identify with what Melania said. After all, I am very much an astrophysicist at home; just never in public.

  24. word says:

He probably told her she’s not allowed to speak in public. Women should be seen not heard lol. I can’t believe this man is winning in the polls. It just proves how insane the majority of Americans are (not to mention racist and sexist). It does feel like we are going backwards in time. Not progressing at all. WTF?

  25. bcgirl says:

She’s still doing the “smouldering eyes” look for the camera.
‘squinting bedroom eyes’ for first lady.

  26. lunchcoma says:

I don’t actually care if the First Lady is interested in politics or not, or even whether she’s smart.

That being said, I don’t know why Trump’s campaign keeps arranging interviews with Melania. Sure, Bill Clinton is well-known, but many people running for president have kept their spouses more in the background. How often do we hear from Jane O’Meara Sanders, Heidi Cruz, or Columba Bush? If Melania prefers to be in the background, it wouldn’t be hard for her to take on fewer gigs of this type.

  27. Sarah01 says:

She is very political privately, I believe that look who she married, a rich old white billionaire – that takes planning, cunning and execution like all politicians.

  28. whatevers says:

Honestly everyone is predicting Republicans to get pushed out in the upcoming elections. Frankly I don’t feel sorry for them. You can’t be misogynistic and racist and then let the head clown push that out there to people and think that POC and women are voting for you. We outnumber you. You are not winning anything.

  29. My Two Cents says:

I find it so ironic how media and dems condemn and misquote his statement saying he wants to ban all Muslims from the US. He didn’t say that. He said we need to put a temporary hold on letting them all in until they can be properly vetted. Many agree now that Germany and Sweden is having an onslaught of rapes and crime. The way the far left thinks frightens many people for the safety of our country. That’s why some like Trump. Hillary wasn’t even successful as SOS but people think she can be President? Bernie’s ideas will never fly. Jeb Bush no way. None presented so far can help us.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Refugees seeking residence at present are already vetted for an average of nearly two years.
Setting different requirements for observers of any one religion is quite clearly against the Constitution.

  30. Lili says:

I don’t think Trump really cares about how smart any woman in his life is. If he was he would have stayed with Ivana. Ex Marla seems to be the least intellectual of the three. I think he actually has distain for really smart women, hence his feud with that Fox newswoman and his firing of Carolyn, his right hand woman from the Apprentice show a good decade or so ago.
    It’s different with his daughter,
since she is not his wife and is helping him build his empire. All he seems to want is a trophy wife now, just to look good at his events, have a kid or two, leave him alone when needed, boast how great he really is,etc.
    And Who’s Sergei???

  31. lurkingweirdo says:

grrr. posted comment in wrong thread. Keep movin’ folks, nothing to see here.

  32. Goodnight says:

How can any American be ambivalent – even AMUSED – about the idea of Trump leading your country?

I feel like that ambivalence is the big issue here, like enough people in the US are thinking ‘Oh, he won’t actually WIN’, and they have faith that enough people hate Trump and think he’s a joke to ensure he won’t become the GOP candidate and if he does, he won’t become the POTUS.

The thing is, if everyone assumes that other people will vote against him and they don’t vote against him themselves, there’s a real danger the rabid minority might put in enough votes to elect him.

That’s the problem with America’s system – voting isn’t mandatory, so only people who actually care about the outcome vote. It’s a system that allows the minority to actually elect someone the majority of the country doesn’t want voted in.

  33. LAK says:

I like that she’s not playing the ‘little woman standing by her man’ games required of women when their spouses are running for public office.

She’s not going to be an elected official, they don’t need to be joined at the hips and if she wants to do her thing whilst he does his public office thing, that’s much better evolution of women’s roles than to pretend she’s suzie home-maker to help his run.

    • Lili says:

Except it won’t be that easy. As a trophy wife AND potential 1st lady, she has to make public appearances to show her support and boost his campaign, making him look better than what he is. Just like others did.
And she’s at a very delicate stage in this kind of relationship. She’s at the age when both Ivana and Marla were “dumped” so to say. So she has to watch her step. Someone like Trump will find something wrong with her and start looking for that new trophy at anytime.
Maybe he’s watching his step since switching wives during a campaign will definitely sink his image permanently. It’s going to be interesting what happens if he’s not elected.

  34. Amelie says:

Wow, there are obviously extremely strong feelings about Melania. I wonder what the Bernie fans think of his wife, Jane… she certainly has some issues in her past. And, I haven’t heard anything about her campaigning for her husband.
