Amal Clooney wore Hammer pants for her Berlin date-night with George

Amal and George Clooney were in LA earlier this week, and now they’re in Berlin. George is opening the Berlin Film Festival with Hail Caesar, and Amal is expected to walk the Berlin premiere red carpet with him today. I’m including photos of George arriving at today’s photocall, George and Amal arriving in Berlin yesterday (those are the photos of Amal’s animal-print boots), and photos of George and Amal out to dinner last night the Grill Royal restaurant in Mitte.

In the airport-arrival photos, Amal is wearing a bag by Altuzarra, boots by leo, Current/Elliot ripped jeans and a vest by Tibi. But that ensemble pales in comparison to Amal’s date-night outfit. She’s literally wearing Hammer pants from the ‘80s. My God. I get that we’re supposed to be like “Oh, so quirky!” She’s like the poster child for When Quirky Makes A Wrong Turn. STOP, HAMMER TIME.

As for Clooney’s promotional duty for Hail Caesar… well, the film needs some kind of help. While the reviews were decent-to-good, Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score reflects the fact that the people who have seen it didn’t really like it. The film made $13 million in its opening week, which sort of qualifies it as Clooney’s “latest bomb.”

Those pants are certainly too legit to quit.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I used to question her taste level. She has answered the question.

  3. a says:

Stop trying to make Amal happen.

    She can’t dress herself.

But she is much smarter than most of us so it’s fine.

  4. Nev says:

She is not a fashion plate. At all.

  5. Tania says:

At least she covered her vagine this time. That last dress was too short!

  6. Locke Lamora says:

I love her style. She’s dressed so smartly for her work, I love that her casual style is this quirky weird twee monstrosity. I love it.

    • Sarah01 says:

      Completely agree with you.
She dresses to please herself I love that.

    • QQ says:

ME TOO! i kinda like she has the aplomb to carry some weird sh!t and smile and do her thing

    • Amelie says:

      Locke Lamora-

I have to say that Amal’s weird taste in casual clothes is growing on me…how we dress expresses our inner self. Her casual mode of dress may say that she is playful, wants to push boundaries or draw attention to herself…who knows? It’s not boring. And, Amal appears to have a history-pre George- of dressing ‘on the edge’.

This is all aside from her shameless self promotion, quasi PR-Law (PRAW) professional activities and participation in a contract marriage.

  7. Citresse says:

Is Amal taller than George? I thought George was taller but maybe they’re equal in height in bare feet.
Anyway, another bad outfit. It makes me wonder if she chooses bad outfits to get more attention.

  8. GingerCrunch says:

I don’t want to say what I really think here. But I will SO enjoy checking in throughout the day to read the snark! Already laughing out loud.

  9. lilacflowers says:

If the guy I’m going on “date night” with is going to wear jeans, well, so am I. If he wants me to put in more effort, so must he. George and Amal’s date nights always seem to consist of George wearing the same black shirt and worn jeans and Amal wearing something outlandish.

    • lisa2 says:

It looks like George is wearing the same cloths he had on when they arrived.. she changed into something else. I can see why a guy would think that it was fine to just head out to dinner after a long flight; it has to be exhausting..

      • Amelie says:

lisa2 says,”It looks like George is wearing the same cloths he had on when they arrived..”

I am wondering if Amal’s expenditures on clothes has bankrupted George. If you review all of the photos of him in recent history, he wears either a gray suit with black shirt OR the tan suade shoes, jeans and a dark shirt. In addition to this, he has a couple of faded out Casamigos tee shirts.

      • JenniferJustice says:

It looks like George is wearing the same clothes he wore on Roseanne in 1994. Booker Brooks anyone?

  10. Nicole says:

That baker boy hat is ridiculous, and dont get me started on the boots, ugh.

  11. seriouslysaid says:

I’m calling these maxi-pad pants (they have WINGS).
They’d be perfect with her vulva sweater.

  12. Margo S. says:

I don’t think the Coen’s comments the other week helped. I think those brothers sound like jerks so I don’t plan on seeing it and I can imagine there are people out there who feel the same way. Movie looks dumb too.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

That’s what happened to me, and anyway, it looks garish. Didn’t they do Barton Fink? Didn’t like that.

  13. lisa2 says:

They will be at the Opening of the Berlin Festival.. Amal will get to shine in all the flashing lights of the night. She will get to walk the RC with George and maybe even pose alone on the carpet. The flashes will be blinding. She will do her signature left hand hair touch.. the photographers will call her name and she will smile pretty for the camera.

it will be Amal’s night.. it may even be a bit about George and his movie Hail Caesar. MAYBE..

    • lisa2 says:

      ALL joking aside.

I’m sure she will look lovely at the festival.

      • Suzanne says:

All joking aside..don’t apologize for the truth. SHE makes it all about Amal…by constantly dressing outlandishly…sort of the Lady Gaga of Law and out of Order.
She never walks in or out of any where without scanning the area for the person holding the camera. It’s so freaking obvious she is ON and looking for the lens.
Next George will produce some movie with her in it. It’s coming…Anyone else see it besides me?

      • siri says:

She will do her best, probably in some classic black elegant dress. But since this is Berlin, and not the Oscars or Globes, attention will fully be on George, not her. They have the ritual of letting the actors of the opening film, which is Hail Cesar, to talk to a lot of reporters more or less extensively. So I don’t think we’ll see too many pics of her.

      • dippit says:

@Suzanne – it’s been obvious for ages that Amal is itching for movie ‘stah’ status. There were even rumours of acting lessons.

If George does find a vehicle for her (Jeez that ought to be a big ‘if’ joke but Clooney PR and ego is out of control these days) he’ll probably try to wrap her casting up as some contribution by him to ‘diversity’.

  14. Catwoman says:

Those look like the pants I tried to make in Home Economics class on seventh grade but f&&&&&d up

  15. M.A.F. says:

I don’t think it’s another Clooney bomb as it is for another poor showing for the Coen brothers. Inside Ilewyn Davis got good critical reviews but I don’t think it performed well at the theaters.

    • Ankhel says:

Very few of the Coen brothers’ movies earn more than 10-15 mill on their first weekend. They tend to do better in the long run, and often win awards. The studio bosses apparently know and accept that.

  16. Ms Vogue says:

Cheap harem girl…she never had any taste, and never will! Just because you are able to afford expensive designer clothes due to your marriage, doesn’t equal style…the cap, the boots, the pants just everything is bad, bad, bad…and did I forget always too short hemlines on the Bambi on Ice dresses…

  17. crtb says:

She always looks like she is trying too hard to show that she is her own person with her own style but she just looks awkward and silly. She should meet the stylist for Kerry Washington. Her style would better serve her.

  18. kri says:

Intersectional pants. Who would have thought it. Looks like an aerial of a highway system. dreadful.

  19. Jaded says:

Maybe she was just having an attack of nostalgia for the seventies….then the eighties? I would totally wear those outfits. To a costume party.

  20. Hazel says:

I love her weird style, but those pants! My first thought was what the hell? Anyway, Amal is singular in her style, that’s for sure. We’ll never see anyone else on these get-ups, not even Gwen Stefani.

  21. Gia says:

Yikes! She’s got horrible taste in fashion.

And I just noticed that she looks like a man. It’s the chin, it looks like a man’s chin.

  22. Petra says:

She looks ridiculous. That is all. And attention hungry – again. When is George going to realise what a liability this woman is to him. I mean do any of the posters here want to go and see his latest movie? No. His wife keeps wearing wacky outfits or outfits that should be worn by a woman 20 years younger to get attention. These wacky pants are calculated to get attention.

She doesn’t understand that the attention is supposed to be on George. HE is the one with a movie to promote. Yet she tries to make it all about her. I note that merely for this restaurant outing she has had a blowout and the makeup looks like it was done for her. Talk about high maintenance.

    • Crisps says:

True that! Reminds me of the Narcissism Epidemic (a book). She seems to lack humility as a human being. It’s great to be confident, but she’s kind of delusional about how interesting she is. She’s only famous because her husband used to be A-list and has tried to sell her as a super unicorn, which, while she’s fairly successful professionally, she isn’t either.

  23. spidey says:

That outfit would look ridiculous even on a 20 year old.and Amal won’t see 20 or 30 or…….again.

  24. BrandyAlexander says:

Well, I’m clearly in the minority – but I love the outfit with the hat and the boots. I just wish the pants weren’t ripped at the knees. That’s the only part that I don’t like.

  25. Amelie says:

I like the idea of the outfit black chic crop top with loose harem pants. Depending on the tailoring some harem pants can work but I do not like the harem pants here or the pattern. They are too parachuty.

  26. Clairej says:

Maybe people are now blinded by their dislike for George – there seems to be a bit of resentment. I think she looks fine, not screaming for attention. The hammer pants aren’t particularly showy and aside from the tears in the jeans she looks normal. Know it seems sort of suspicious this whole marriage, but George seems very nice and looks happy so whatever.

    • noway says:

You do realize you said the hammer pants aren’t particularly showy. Isn’t that an oxymoron? Sure they aren’t neon, but by definition hammer pants are showy, don’t think MC Hammer wore them so no one would notice him.

  27. siri says:

There was a press conference for the opening film, Hail Cesar, and a Mexican reporter asked Clooney what, besides making movies,he does to ease the refugee crisis. He snapped at the journalist saying :”I spend a lot of time working on these things, and it’s an odd thing to have someone stand up and say, ‘What do you do?’ That’s fine, knock yourself out. I have gone to places that are very dangerous and I work a lot on these things.” Then he mentioned he’s gonna meet Merkel on Friday, asking the journalist: “I’d like to know what you are doing to help the situation?” Unfortunately, there is no video yet, but the reporter seemingly answered the question very precisely. It’s interesting that people start to question the ‘humanitarian’ efforts of the HW elite, and their place in this world. And I don’t understand why Merkel would meet with him (and probably Amal)- what for? PR for herself? Jesus, I thought she had better things to do.

    • Crisps says:

Look up that Paul Theroux article about celebrity mythomaniacs.

      • siri says:

Thank you!! What an interesting read! I always suspected the kind of aid those people think about has more to do with their need to feel important, and shows a complete lack of understanding of the real troubles of those areas they so vehemently use as their playground. I also think that quite a bit of the money going in isn’t really spent in a productive way, or flows back in one way, or the other. Theroux makes it very clear, and this man really knows his subject. Thank you again!

    • Dari says:

I could not believe Merkel said she would meet with him. With the
major german bank going under you would think this would be as low key as possible.

      • dippit says:

Interestingly, when Merkel’s spokesperson was asked about detail of a meeting with Clooney for Friday they “could not immediately comment on plans for a meeting”. That is an odd response for the Chancellor’s office to make if it has been set as part of her official diary in advance.

George certainly covered his mouth a lot during his protestations to the journalist asking about what he has done. His body language was very defensive, evasive, and a little contradictory as to the truth of his words.

  28. Grant says:

I actually don’t hate the hammer pants and I covet her beautiful hair. That is all.

  29. jojo says:

holy shhhhhh that is a lot of fashion for a very small woman.

  30. benchwarmer says:

I used to love wearing hats like that, I think I was copying JLo. And I thought I wore my mine well past their expiration date, it hurt to get rid of them when I finally let them go. It’s not that those hats look bad on people, it’s just they were so popular during a certain time period that it’s hard to detach it from that time frame.

  31. Nic919 says:

She tries too hard to seem quirky which is why it doesn’t work. She can’t pull off casual wear credibly but she generally does better with work attire. The quirky outfits wear her and not the other way around.

  32. Goldenretriever says:

For some reason, of late, she seems to take her fashion inspiration from the teenagers of early the 90s.

  33. Goldenretriever says:

I can’t edit my comment that should read …of the early 90s.

  34. Kate says:

Hail Caesar only cost 22 million to make, and it will reach that domestically this weekend. It’s not a bomb. It’s a small film made for a niche audience, that happens to have some A-Listers in it.

Like Woody Allen, the Coen brothers films rarely make major money, but they always make a good to great profit on a relatively small budget.

I wish people would stop calling every film that doesn’t over perform a bomb. A bomb is a film like By The Sea, a film that couldn’t even make a third of it’s minuscule budget back, or a blockbuster like John Carter that cost hundreds of millions and barely made 20 million profit.
