Gillian Jacobs tries ‘not to let on how nervous I am, to appear confident’

I know Gillian Jacobs from Community, where she played activist screwup Britta, a character who had just enough knowledge to assume she was right but not enough to know what she was doing. Britta so predictably botched everything that they turned her name into the verb “brittaed,” as in “you really brittaed that up.” Jacobs is a talented comedic actress and I’ve always had the impression that she was as confident offscreen as she came across while delivering deadpan lines.

She’s starring in the upcoming Netflix show Love, directed by Judd Apatow, which premieres on February 19th. It’s already been renewed for a second season. Jacobs, 33, plays another character who doesn’t have her sh*t together, and in a new interview with Bustle she explained that she’s grown a lot personally but can really relate. She said that she feels like a fraud sometimes and doesn’t understand why people put faith in her. This made me sad to read, but I’m almost 10 years older than she is and am in the “I don’t care” phase. I think I could have related to this when I was in my early 30s. Here’s some of what she said.

On starring in her own show
“I’m trying not to always let on how nervous I am, to appear more confident than I actually feel. Because I feel like at earlier points in my life, I would’ve just gone, ‘too hard, too scary, people are gonna realize I’m a fraud.’ [However I am] at a point that I kind of want to scare myself.”

On her first real foray into leading actor territory
“I’m trying not to always let on how nervous I am, to appear more confident than I actually feel. Because I feel like at earlier points in my life, I would’ve just gone, ‘too hard, too scary, people are gonna realize I’m a fraud.'”

On playing her flawed character Mickey in ‘Love’

“As an actor, I’m glad. But if she were my friend, I’d be pulling my hair out.”

“I was the friend that my friends worried about… their lives and careers all seemed to be moving forward, and I felt kind of stuck. 10, 15 years ago, I was in a place in my life where I was making not as extreme, but similar choices.

On testing herself
She picks projects that challenge and “intimidate” her — or, as she quotes, “in the words of Shonda Rhimes, saying ‘yes.'”

On overcoming fear

“Even though I have the voice in my head that tells me I can’t do it, I’m just gonna try… I keep wanting to try and use different parts of my brain, challenge myself in different ways, and feel like I’m taking on new roles in my own life. That’s so cliche.”

[From Bustle]

I feel like giving her a pep talk. “You can do this, you’ve got this. You’re funny!” She’s not navel-gazing so much as vulnerable and honest about what she’s going through. Bustle also pointed us to a brief biographical article which Jacobs wrote for Lena Dunham’s newsletter, Lenny, last month in which she explains how she got into acting and was put on academic probation at Juilliard. It’s a good read and goes a long way toward explaining her personality – her parents divorced when she was young and she’s a people pleaser – and her career choice. Now I’m excited to watch Love and I hope it turns in more steady work for her. It looks like she’s well on her way.

Here’s some of the editorial and you can see more on Bustle. All of the clothing is from Modcloth, which… you can tell. She deserves more sophisticated styling. (Update: Gillian is also in “Halston Heritage Bonded Crepe Cutout Dress, a Halston Heritage Satin Faille High/Low Skirt, and a T Shirt Lipstick Attack from Yeah-Bunny.PL.”)

She’s beautiful but I think she looked SO much better with bright-Britta-blonde hair.

Oh, I think the opposite re:hair color, I find she looks way better with dark hair; to me, it brings some color and vivacity to her very pale complexion. But I am a sucker for brown chocolatey hair, I usually prefer it on anyone!

      • eo says:

Love her hair color! So refreshing to see someone without the obligatory yellow helmet, dark roots, dark eyebrows

    • Erinn says:

Really? I think the brown suits her more. Maybe a less intense blonde would be nice… I found the Britta blonde was too brassy of a blonde a lot of the time.

    • pinetree13 says:

I liked her better blonde too. Also this shade of brown with the much lighter ends just looks like box dye that’s fading faster at the ends because of damage. It’s not a nice shade of brown. If it was a deeper chocolatey colour I would like it better. But she really looks great blonde.

She’s a great comedic actress and I loved Community but I won’t be watching Love. I just CAN’T anymore with the Apatow produced hot-skinny-chick and goofy-looking dude who hook up. I realize that happens in real life plenty, and the show might be funny, but I just can’t support it on my screen anymore.

I enjoy some of Judds comedies but still wonder what kind of writer has so little internal reflection. I mean sure he and his buddies Rogen, Sandler and Kevin James married the conventional beauties despite what they bring to the table looks wise, but they had other “compensatory” attributes. The male characters he writes are bot successful or well respected or wealthy, they are just stupid physically unattractive man-boys who bizarrely attract the exact opposite of themselves.

    • lila fowler says:

He and Sandler have not changed in like 20 years. Their sh-t is old and tired, just like them. I wonder if Apatow is going to force his untalented daughters into this production as well? The King of Industry Nepotism, truly.

    • Esther says:

that he still does it after him and Seth Rogen were called out on it after the Elliot Rodger killing spree is crazy. he really does not see the damage his male entitlement flicks do. yes women are visual too and yes you’ll have to deal with it without killing people.

  3. Lindy79 says:

I really like her and will be watching this when it’s aired

  4. Lucy2 says:

I’m happy for her that she has a new show, I hope it is successful. She comes across as very honest and likable in interviews.

  5. Neelyo says:

She was the most charming RuPaul’s Drag Race judge ever. Don’t know much else about her, but I love her because of her appearance on that show.

  6. ell says:

this mousy brown does nothing for her. it’s is my natural hair colour (i dye it blonde) and it really washes pale skin out.

  7. Caela says:

I basically love her because of Community so I will definitely check out her new show regardless of Apatow being involved….

    • North of Boston says:

      +1

I find her really charming, she was really game on Community, and I find myself rooting for her in whatever new projects she does.

  8. sauvage says:

In case you like Gillian Jacobs and haven’t seen the film yet: Please do yourself a favour and watch “Life Partners” with Leighton Meester. It is a wonderful, heart-warming, wise film.

  9. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I didn’t realize what range she has until she played Adam’s new gf on Girls. Wow.
