Adele in deep red Giambattista Valli at the BRIT Awards: stunning or blah?

wenn23547903

Let’s not pretend last night’s BRIT Awards were about anyone else than Adele. I mean, I’ll cover some of the other people and fashion moments, but Adele gets her own post. Adele decided to forgo her usual black, structured gown for this flowy Giambattista Valli gown that looks like something Stevie Nicks would have worn 30 years ago. Even though there are VERTICAL RUFFLES happening, I’m still sort of into this. That’s the power of a bold red/wine/burgundy. Plus, she matched her lipstick to her dress and it looks surprisingly awesome.

Unlike the Grammys, the BRIT Awards nominated Adele in five different categories (the BRITs cut-off date must have been December). And out of five nominations, Adele won FOUR. Because they love her. Because she’s Adele. During one of her wins, Adele used her moment to thank her label – she’s with XL and Columbia – for letting her “embrace the fact that I am a woman.” Then she said: “… and I would like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.” You can see the video below.

Here’s a fun fact though: Adele mainly deals with the UK label XL Recordings, but in America, Columbia distributes her music. Columbia is owned by Sony. Sony also partnered with Dr. Luke to create Kemosabe Records. Kesha’s signed with Kemosabe, and that’s the contract she’s trying to void. Sony connects them all, and if Adele wanted to throw her weight around, I wonder if she could go up the chain to Sony? And considering Adele’s reach and power, it’s a HUGE deal that Adele used this moment to publicly support Kesha.

Oh, and of course Adele performed at the BRITs too. She did “When We Were Young” which… I like. It’s a better song than “All I Ask,” which is the song that got f—ked up at the Grammys. This is probably the best live version I’ve heard of this song.

I hate the dress, but her makeup is perfection.

  2. lower-case deb says:

    that performance dress!
i know that the middle detail is supposed to be like an art deco tower or something, like a stylized empire state building,
but it just looked like the whole of her body is giving the middle finger the whole time she’s singing.

    red IS definitely her color.
but that ruffle is not her dress.

last night was the Adele Show at the Brits (it really feels like it especially when she starts chatting with the audience rather than doing straight up acceptance speeches).

is this going to be what it’s like in all of the musical award shows all the way up to next year’s Grammys?

    • McLori says:

I thought it looked kinda like Captain American, but I really liked the shape compared to the first dress.

  3. cubfan34 says:

    It makes her look heavy.

  4. Mia4s says:

Glad she had a great performance! Sad day when the Brit Awards are better produced and run than the Grammys!

And bravo on the Kesha statement, simple and effective. Sadly I doubt they would respond to her in private. She’s doing the only thing that might work, publicly embarrass them.

  5. shannon says:

How come I can’t have this hair?

  6. Micki says:

I think this colour is beautiful on her, but the dress on ist own is only MEH…

  7. Lucy says:

LOVE. She brought it. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Brits ended up being everything the Grammys wanted to be and more. It sounds like it was a nice show.

  8. Lizzie McGuire says:

The color of her dress is really pretty & flattering but I wish it was her Grammy dress instead. What I love is her makeup & hair, damn that’s one of her best looks ever.

  9. Jenns says:

She is so beautiful. I love when she wears prints and colors.

  10. savu says:

I LOVE it. Simply because she looks like she loves it, you know? Both looks are killer.

  11. Mandy says:

I cut my hair because of Adele. I haven’t had shoulder length hair in years. I love her, she looks fabulous!

  12. InvaderTak says:

Dress: not good. Hair and makeup: perfect.

  13. Kate says:

Oof, there’s a difference between wearing a push up bra and hoisting your boobs so far up they start doubling back on themselves. Not a good look.

That song is so by the numbers its verging on parody, but she sings it well. Her shoutout to Kesha was lovely.

    • Amelie says:

“there’s a difference between wearing a push up bra and hoisting your boobs so far up they start doubling back on themselves.”

LOL. this happens all too often in women’s formal fashion. I think the hint of decolatage is much more sexy & powerful. Re: dress, Adele has an ample womanly shape and I am glad to see this while so many that see a stick figure as the ideal beauty. Having said that, IMO, she needs a more structured look; the gown she is wearing looks as if she is trying to conceal her ample shape. And, it makes her look larger than she is. The color is divine on her though.

  14. Sisi says:

Great to finally see her in a soft fabric. We don’t see that often with Adele.

  15. kri says:

Hair and face are perfect. I like the color of the gown, but ruffles should only be inside of a bag. I love her for speaking up for Kesha!

  16. Darlene says:

I hate the dress! Why lose so much weight only to hide your figure under miles of fabric? Even her arms are obscured.

  17. lucy2 says:

The dress is a bit ruffled for my taste, but the color is great on her and she looks fantastic.
I love that song, I will have to watch the video later. Glad she had a good performance after being upset about the Grammys mess.
Good for her for sticking up for Kesha, especially since she has a business relationship with Sony through Columbia.

  18. lower-case deb says:

in that picture where she’s in her singing dress,
she crosses her legs, right? but is it because of the legth of the dress that makes it less like “i need the bathroom quick” like the other women and more like a matron in the old movies?

  19. Alex says:

Her publicly supporting Kesha is yet another nightmare for Sony. Because yes Columbia Records is under the Sony umbrella and lets be real no one is dropping Adele. So for her to make a pointed statement at sony is awesome…I hope she takes it further in whatever way she feels she can.

Sony PR must be running around with the hits they keep taking

  20. grabbyhands says:

The color is gorgeous on her, but I think if this had been like, a tea length dress with shorter sleeves it would have been a great look.

I think she is still getting used to how her body has changed and that she can wear different stuff now. It is a hard mindset to break yourself of.

  21. NeoCleo says:

I don’t like the red caftan-like dress but she is so pretty anyway. I beet she chose that dress to be comfortable while waiting on the awards portion of the show.

The dress she wore while performing was far more flattering.

  22. taboo says:

    That’s way too much makeup.
I’m really surprised that most of you like it. She’s so pretty naturally, but it’s clown-like.

  23. sauvage says:

Stunning. Stunning, stunning, stunning. Had I been there (which, for obvious reasons, I was not; I’m not a musician, let alone a famous one), I would have run up to her, told her she looked absolutely stunning, and then I would have hidden in the bathroom for the rest of the show out of fan-girling embarassment. Did I say STUNNING already?

  24. Roller74 says:

Makeup is spot on. The dress reminds me of 50’s boudoir. All that’s missing is a cigarette and a martini.

  25. Lakeridge says:

Oh my gosh the ruffles on that dress are so “TJ Maxx Clearance Rack (Women’s Sizes).” I can’t even.

  26. KBeth says:

I like the dress! I think she is so pretty.

  27. jammypants says:

    She’s breathtaking.

  28. Breakfast Margaritas says:

She has a beautiful face! I love her makeup. I love this deep crimson red on her. I do not like the design of the dress. Whoever her stylist is, needs to remember that she is a young woman. Queen Latifah and Octavia Spencer are 2 large but well styled women on the red carpet. They don’t drape themselves in excess material or wear skintight dresses on the red carpet either.

  29. Wilma says:

How come her eyes look smaller these days? Is it make up? I honestly think she looked better before with her sixties style. She’s still a pretty woman, but she was stunning to me.

  30. Keisha says:

The dress shape is not the best on her but the color is GORGEOUS on her, the best color I’ve seen on her!! Her hair, I just love it and it makes me itchy to cut mine shorter. Her make-up is always spot on too – she really has a BEAUTIFUL face!!

LOVE that song, makes me cry, reminds me of my Aunt and Uncle who were teenage sweethearts – she just passed with him at her bedside and he told me towards the end, they reminisced together so much about “when we were young”!! He used those those exact words!! The entire song is beautifully heartbreaking.

  31. Hummus says:

She’s a human-sized blood clot. That is all. (Her lipstick is fab though.)

  32. mo says:

Awful dress, boring hair, great make-up!!! Time for a new stylist and hairstyle.

  33. Timbuktu says:

So, after the Grammys fiasco, I went on YouTube to hear it, and ended up listening to her other big event performances, notably the old Grammys with “Rolling in the deep” and the Oscars with “Skyfall”. I have to say I was underwhelmed in both cases, even though those are supposed to be good performances. In “Rolling in the deep” she sounded downright sick, in “Skyfall” she sounded audibly nervous, not as good as on my CD.
I was almost ready to conclude that she doesn’t do well live, but then every time I hear her sing off the cuff, like on the Ellen show or in that British karaoke cab, she sounds fabulous.
    I’m confused now.

Also, I don’t get the hate for “All I ask”. I honestly think it’s the prettiest song on her latest album and I am not surprised she picked it for the Grammys!

  34. caitlinK says:

It’s amazing: even in stills, when she’s not paired w her beautiful voice, this woman still appears both commanding and mesmerizing…Normally I don’t like makeup color (esp. lipstick) that precisely matches one’s clothes, but this is such a resonant, rich cranberry red, and flatters her so much, that it’s an exception. I think she looks lovely, but she’s at her loveliest while she’s singing, for then she looks so freed of earthly impediments and cares, like someone at the height of their truest self, their purest calling and vocation.

  35. spidey says:

Must be something wrong with me because I think she is overrated

    • Spinach says:

Nope, lots of people think she’s overrated. To me her voice has zero emotion and aesthetics. It’s kind of flat and colourless and expresses little feeling. It reminds me of being tryhard gritty after a heartbreak and hanging around in daggy bars with dodgy singers.
