Iggy Azalea: ‘The artists that criticize me don’t have as much success as me’

iggy remix

Iggy Azalea is dropping a new album, which is why she’s been getting so much press lately, and why she seems to be giving interviews all over the place. I heard her new single “Team” on the radio and I was not into it. I’m saying that as someone who once liked and defended Iggy – I still think “Work” is a good song, you know? But “Team” sucks. And I do think the tide has largely turned on Iggy – while there might be some younger kids who are interested in her new album, Iggy has burned a lot of bridges within the music industry. So what’s interesting is that Iggy keeps giving interviews and fronting like the past year and a half hasn’t happened at all, like she’s still a huge, popular artist. In the new issue of Remix Mag, Iggy says that all of the people criticizing her are just jealous, the kind of reasoning I would expect from a Kardashian-Jenner.

She’s changed her sound for her second album, Digital Distortion: “I love The New Classic, I think it’s a great album. But I do think I lost myself in it a bit because I was so concerned with other people’s opinions.”

Competition & jealousy: “The artists that criticise me don’t have as much success as me, so I think it gets them riled up, because they’re not selling as much as I am. I honestly think that’s what it boils down to…I don’t want to say it’s just people being jealous, but I do think the level of success I’ve had and how many fans I have and the amount of records I sell does have a lot to do with it.”

She loves Lorde: “I almost collaborated with Lorde on this album! I sent her the song and it didn’t get done in time, but it’s one of my artistic goals to collaborate with her. There’s this one song I wrote for the album but it needed a female singer and she was my number one. She was going to do it, she was totally keen, but she was too busy with her own album. I hope it can happen, if not on this album then another. I think she’s awesome.”

She’s just being funny, not bitchy: “I think a lot of times people don’t understand my humor over here and people think it’s me being bitchy.”

[From E! News]

Sigh… I’m giving Iggy a big fat nope for this one. While I genuinely believe that someone like Azealia Banks is wildly inappropriate, problematic and downright unhinged (Banks’ latest is awful too), I also think that the conversations around Iggy – conversations about cultural appropriation, race and more – needed to happen. Not everyone who says something negative about Iggy is “jealous of her success” – there are legitimate beefs and problems with and around Iggy.

Please stop covering her. She’s wack.

  2. Bridget says:

    #surejan

  3. teacakes says:

can Itchy Areola shut up and languish in her well-deserved irrelevance already?

  4. Lucy says:

It has always attracted my attention how many singers/popstars/starlets have this “I don’t care what people think about me” when they become famous, only to come out a couple years later to talk about how insecure they used to feel at the beginning of their career, and how they were always looking for validation from others.

  5. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Uh, she must have gotten it confused because nearly every single artist who criticized her IS more successful than her. In fact Azealia is the only one I can think of who wasn’t.

But Nicki, Q-Tip, Common…they make money hand over fist and have name recognition and respect she’d kill for.

Now the people who supported her? Amateurs and newbies just trying to do a colab and get a radio-hit. CharlieXCX, Rita Ora. Britney was her huge colab and she fucked that up by then insulting her when the single did poorly.

    • Naya says:

She knows nothing of the culture she tried to commoditise if she thinks that she is bigger than all the people you named plus Erykah Badu, Macklemore, Snoop and even Eminem.

Also how could anybody living in the US like Work. The accent on that song is so atrocious it sounds like some SNL actor was intentionally playing up the horribleness for laughs. i get Australians not knowing better but that song is pure comedy if you actually know what accent she is trying to mimic.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Oh Lord, I forgot Eminem, Snoop and Erykah. She’s been criticized by so many people I just listed the top 3 off the top of my head but exactly.

Poor girl is confused as hell because she’s getting ‘criticism’ read: advice from legends while she proudly reps her Kidz Bop rap career with one-hitter quitters.

      • Wren AUS says:

Oh dear lord please do not throw all of Aussies in as Iggy supporters! It’s actually MORE frustrating to hear such a fake accent knowing she should sound the same as us when she speaks. Ew

    • Otaku Fairy says:

That’s what I thought too. Almost all of the artists who criticized her are actually more successful than her.

  6. Whatever1 says:

    Jealous???…… K

  7. paolanqar says:

    Whoa.
Considering she is basically known for constantly fighting with people on twitter and her plastic surgery, this comes off as one STRONG statement.

  8. Alex says:

…ok then. Pretty sure your critics are way more successful than you. And why are you acting like you’ve been in the game that long? You had ONE album and you didn’t even tour. So you probably didnt make much money in the last year. You got roasted over not being able to freestyle, cultural appropriation and your most popular songs are all ones featuring actual singers. Please go have a seat somewhere with this jealousy mess

  9. ooooohyoubetta says:

Lol, I don’t know about for all of y’all, but an advertisement for Banquet 100% natural fried chicken breasts is running directly over her photo in this article.

The perfect pop-up advertisement for such a lame little wannabe slutty country bumpkin.

  11. OriginallyBlue says:

This woman still lacks self awareness. It just boggles my mind how anyone could be so dense.

  12. word says:

Just like the Kardashians, “If you don’t like me it’s only because you’re jealous !”. Yeah, that’s it.

  13. Ramona Q. says:

The flannel around the waist look is stupid. Johnny Depp, Gwen Stefani, Iggy no.

  14. Amanda G says:

I guess she hasn’t learned anything at all about good PR in the last 2 years. I’m over this girl. She can be filed away as a one-hit-album-wonder as far as I’m concerned.

  15. TreadStyle says:

How is she back in the spotlight?! I thought she was done for. Ugh. 🙁

  16. mary simon says:

Iggy got her original botched, flat, tiny cat button nose job repaired. It’s an improvement. She doesn’t look like Hello Kitty anymore.

  17. Beatrix says:

Azealia Banks is crazy but she can spit mad rhymes, if only she got a hold pf her issues she would way more famous than unfamous for bad sh*t crazy things she says and does.
She has talent. She’s mean as hell, and crazy but she rights jer own songs and can actually rap.
Iggy I’m not sure what a talent is apart of by a white woman with a fake butt.

  18. Otaku Fairy says:

I do think that celebrities sometimes publicly attack whoever is more popular than them in order to gain extra publicity and draw attention to themselves (which I think is more about attention-seeking and “look how much more real and better I am than this other star” competition than jealousy), but that doesn’t apply to Iggy Azalea’s situation. The criticism was valid, but she doesn’t really seem to get it (or want to get it) and sees it as just jealousy.

  19. Naddie says:

Mean girl syndrome: “they hatin’ cuz they jealous”.

  20. Esin says:

    She turned into Joan Rivers!!
