Sarah Palin: ‘Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am… he’s not a scientist’

wenn22189782

Sarah Palin attended a Washington, DC premiere for the film (“film”) Climate Hustle this week. Climate Hustle, if you do not know, is a right-wing propaganda “documentary” about how climate change isn’t real and it’s all just a massive conspiracy by Hollywood liberals and fake scientists (and the filmmakers trot out a few fake scientists of their own). Over the past few years, Bill Nye has become one of the regular commentators on how climate change is hella real, and he often makes amazingly efficient arguments to prove his point. Clips of Nye’s interviews appear in Climate Hustle, but as you imagine, the propagandists “disprove” whatever he’s saying. Still, Bill Nye’s scientific qualifications are no match for a cut-and-run ex-governor and malfunctioning fembot, you betcha. At the premiere, Palin told the crowd:

“Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am. He’s a kids’ show actor; he’s not a scientist,” Palin pointed out, before accusing Nye of using his position of authority to harm children by teaching them that climate change is real and man-made.

Palin insisted that parents not allow their children to be indoctrinated by fact-based scientific research, urging them to “ask those questions and not just believe what Bill Nye the Science Guy is trying to tell” them.

[From Salon]

Here are some facts… Bill Nye graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in mechanical engineering from Cornell in 1977. He worked at Boeing where he developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor. He helped develop the sundial for the Mars Rover expedition. He has held the position of vice president and executive director of The Planetary Society. He holds several patents. I got all of this information from browsing his Wiki page for a few minutes. He IS a scientist and an engineer. And he makes science, math, astronomy and engineering relatable and exciting to kids. And he advocates for good science, for science free of political agenda. All of that can coexist in one person. Just like dangerous stupidity and a basic lack of decency can coexist in Sarah Palin.

Pulling out hair!! Ughhh. Just. go. away.

    • C says:

Ikr? Btw, how can anyboby defend this woman and her stupidity?

      • aims says:

I loathe this woman. It’s to the point now that I become enraged and I’m normally a chilled out, zen kind of girl.

      • Kitten says:

Me too. There are very few people that I actively hate but she and her ass backwards family fall into that category. She’s just a f*cking terrible person.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@C exactly – and sadly, I know many people who like her! And think she’s awesome. How can that be??

      • Tiffany :) says:

I’m the same way. I am usually indifferent about celebs that aren’t my favorite, but she just pushes my buttons. She is constantly making things like science, learning, eating healthy, etc. political. Science shouldn’t be an “us vs. them” thing!

I will never understand how someone so unintelligent came so close to being vice president. How they were elected governor of a state. What it says about our country truly scares me.

      • SusanneToo says:

Echoing all of you. Loathsome woman, loathsome family. I’ll never forgive McCain. Is there a Nobel prize for stupidest person in the history of civilization?

      • wood dragon says:

No Nobel, but she and her family may yet win the Darwin award.
        Fingers crossed.

      • Magnoliarose says:

My cat’s fur balls are more intelligent than she is. Gross but still smarter than that harpy.

      • Carol says:

I continue to curse John McCain for delivering this idiot upon us.

      • MC2 says:

I agree on all the Palin hate and Nye is the opposite side of that coin. How could anyone bash or hate on Bill Nye the Science Guy?! He’s wonderful & amazing.
Jeez Palin- why don’t go out and try to hunt some stray kittens……
P.S.- I can’t believe people are still thinking climate change is made up. smdh

      • Shaz says:

In a galaxy far far away, there is still no one or thing dumber than this one

      • Cran says:

This is the same woman who could not say what newspapers she reads daily. Question I could answer when I was ten. But then she can see Russia from her house so what do I know.

    • Angelica says:

+1. All I can think is not today. Not today.

    • EM says:

Darn you McCain! I agree with everyone else, this woman & daughters make me want to bang my head against a wall.

    • OlyB says:

Look, I love Bill Nye and also agree he’s a scientist, but he absolutely has a political agenda. He’s a huge supporter of the Democratic Party candidates in Washington state (you’ll see him frequently at NARAL events as well as Democratic Party functions.)

He’s not shy about providing support to his political endorsements. He also recently rescinded his initial support for GMO food labeling in Washington state (again, because the man CLEARLY is on the side of science and reason, although the hippies now hate him).

But he is above all else scientific.

      • ol cranky says:

I’m pretty sure his political agenda is based on science and his support for the Democratic party is probably based on the fact it’s not the party undermining science with a right to impose a rejection of fact based personal religious beliefs on others and trying to gut public education.

There’s no need for the caveat about his political affiliation

      • Kyra says:

The reason he has a political agenda is because of science. Democrats are the only political “side” that justifies its policies with science as opposed to unprovable beliefs. Equating the two — as if both were legitimate perspectives — confuses the spiritual plane with the biological one. Both realms can and do coexist in people’s consciousness, but only science can dictate policy.

  2. vauvert says:

I am torn between wanting to throw rotten eggs at Palin and begging Kaiser to stop covering this dumb, dumb, dumb woman.
Oh, and I adore Nye. He is fantastic and a hit in our house, with a tween who is actually interested in science. Imagine that.

    • Amelia says:

      Let’s petition more Nye posts.
A weekly science related gossip post 🙂

    • Melly says:

Bill Nye was the original reason I got interested in science! Live Hard or Nye Trying

    • tmot says:

I felt so bad for him when he blew out his knee on DWTS! It was actually a relief when they cut him. Hopefully it’s all healed up now, and not one of those chronic injuries that never fully heal.

  3. Melody says:

I would think Palin to be the least likely proponent of asking questions and thinking critically… She should beware what she asks for.

  4. arock says:

    **pounds head on keyboard**

  5. mia girl says:

Stupidity found a nice home in Sarah Palin’s brain, where it met and hooked up with Foolishness, had a couple of kids and named them Ignorance and Idiocy.

  6. Jsilly4e says:

Yes, all great credentials but can he see Russia from his house??!?!

    Didn’t thinks so Bill Nye!

  7. Erinn says:

I still remember watching an episode of Bill Nye where he’s talking about poisonous snakes – something like “if red touches black do x” but if “red touches yellow it’s y”. Similar to the beer before liquor memory thing.

Anyway – I remember being actually distraught over the fact that I couldn’t remember which was the safe kind of snake, and which was the deadly kind – until my mother pointed out that we live in Nova Scotia, and chances are this is not going to be something that comes up.

    • Amelia says:

      Oh yeah, the coral snake!

‘Red on black, venom lack. Black on yellow, kills a fellow’. Or something like that.

      • Erinn says:

Yeah, something like that. But my god, I was terrified that I couldn’t remember which was which.

We have like a handful of adorable wild snake species that hibernate for like the 9 months of winter we have. (It definitely FEELS like 9 months of winter anyway) haha. They’re all very nice, timid ones – basically garter snakes and green snakes… just your garden variety mouse and bug eaters. But in my mind – it would be totally possible to find coral snakes or rattlers if I just looked hard enough.

    • Kitten says:

      Liquor Before Beer, Never Fear
      Beer Before Liquor, Never Sicker

…is what 4 years of college taught me.

      • Amelia says:

        I’m still learning that one . . .

      • mia girl says:

Kitten – I’d always heard that if you drink in alphabetical order you will not get sick/hung-over. This would counter your scientific theory of liquor before beer.

We need Bill Nye on the case!

      • Erinn says:

Whiskey and wine you’ll have a good time. Drink anything else … and …well…you wont? hahaha.

Whiskey and wine are the only drinks that have not betrayed me.

      • arock says:

box of wine, vomit all the time

      • Tiffany :) says:

        Our version was
Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.
Beer before Liquor, never been sicker.

    • Megan says:

I lol’ed over this! I’m the queen of both forgetting facts and irrational fears.

  8. Jsilly4e says:

And what about her daughter’s credentials on teaching abstinence!?!? OMG. This woman and her family make me want to scream!!!!!!!!

  9. Saks says:

Just like with yesterday’s vaccine topic, it is beyond me that people would rather believe in people like Sarah Palin or Robert DeNiro, instead of what real and renowned scientists have proven and discover…

  10. doofus says:

well, if she’s as much of a scientist as he is, let’s put them head-to-head in a debate about science and climate change.

    I’d pay to watch that.

    • mia girl says:

Nye has more scientific knowledge in one fingernail clipping than Palin and her brood have put together x 10000000000.

And what does it really matter if he is technically a scientist or not when she and others supporting this stupid movie ignore 99.9% of all scientists anyway?

Calling her a moron is a scientifically proven insult to morons.

    • Esmom says:

YES. Someone needs to make this happen. Maybe then she’d scurry away once and for all.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

That would be So Much Fun!

    • Tiffany :) says:

People on my facebook feed heard a debate was happening and they were giddy. I looked into it, and it seemed that she was just going to “debate” clips of him talking.

I wish she was stupid enough to debate him live. That would be some serious entertainment.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

And Donald Trump wants her as part of his cabinet.

  12. Rachel says:

    Oh no she didn’t!

Usually, I pay her no mind because… well, that needs no qualification. But when you insult Bill Nye, a line has been CROSSED!

    • Tiffany says:

I agree. You do not mess with Bill Nye. I just take it personally.

She is saying what she is getting paid to. Someone cut her a check.

  13. Dunne says:

LOVE the Bill Nye side-eye picture at the end.

  14. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

i have nothing remotely polite to say about this woman so I’ll fill this time with a stirring rendition of the Bill Nye theme song.

  15. Wellsie says:

I’m honking for more Bill Nye coverage, less Palin! lol

  16. Murphy says:

Well good luck getting anyone ages 40 and under to support you in this Sarah, we all watched Bill Nye on TV growing up and we all love him and we all know he is a real scientist.

Also you are here-by banned from the Universe of Energy ride at Epcot. Forever.

    • Dlo says:

Why did you bring age into this? I am well over 40 as are many of my friends and there is no way we would ever support a talking rectum, shame on you

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Dio’s right; a lot of us elders ; ) love Bill Nye too. Palin’s appeal is to stupidity, not age. If anything, it’s painful to be an older woman watching younger mothers skip vaccinating their kids because they know better than science.

  17. me says:

He has a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, which technically makes him an engineer not a scientist. I believe you need a PHD to actually be considered a “scientist”. But he has A LOT of experience in the field of science. He is helping to create some amazing things. Palin needs to read up.

    • lower-case deb says:

i always thought he has one in natural sciences or math because hasn’t he got a BSc? but engineer is close enough. and his many honorary doctorates in science…

Betcha Bill Nye does more for science and STEM education in one day than Sarah Palin does in her whole life!

that last pic is so funny!
it’s like he’s saying “Sarah, i heard you say the word Science, but i don’t think it means what you think it means.”

      • Kaiser says:

Engineering is a science, an applied science. He is a scientist.

      • lower-case deb says:

now that i thought of it… indeed it is!
i’m just thrown by the degree name, i guess. my husband is a mechanical engineer and he has a B.Eng so somehow my brain just went BEng=Engineer, BSc=Scientist

i keep forgeting that it’s probably only down to the different institutions and how they name their courses and honors.

it seems that i have indeed earned Bill Nye’s Side Eye too! but hopefully not as bad as Palin?

    • Kitten says:

That’s not true at all. As long as you’re practicing in the profession, you’re a scientist.

Source: I have two friends and a cousin who are research scientists. I also have another friend who is a scientist who has his PhD. The only difference really is the salary–he makes more money with that title.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

Yeah, I think it’s about doing research – research using the scientific method.

Degrees can be so misleading. Some people get MA but have to do real research; others get an MS for which they had to write a long essay; a lot of that has to do with the historic roots of their particular degree programs.

Doctoral degrees vary too. You have to look at what people are actually doing. People trained to the PhD or post-doctoral level in the sciences are more likely to do scientific research, but they’re not the only ones.

If Nye was an “applied” scientist, he’s certainly earned his honorary title by now.

    • Kelsey says:

      Me,
While you definitely don’t have to have a PhD to be considered a scientist (you are thinking of Doctor) my husband is a geotechnical engineer (civil field) and he and his colleagues are often referred to as engineers and scientist. Since engineering falls under the science umbrella, it is not a stretch to consider an engineer a scientist.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

If they are doing science-based research using engineering methods, sure. I think people can also go in and out of acting AS scientists, though. Actually doing science – formulating testable hypotheses and testing them using a series of observations.

    • Arpeggi says:

Holding a BSc means you’re a bachelor of science, hence you’re a scientist. Having a PhD makes you a Doctor (of philosophy)… And that doesn’t matter much anyway, a research technician that holds a professional degree in a scientific field is just as much a scientist. Your training and your occupation makes you a scientist, your diploma and personal achievements (publications, patents, etc.) is telling of your expertise in a given field.

Source: Myself, as a holder of a MSc (Master of science) and working in Academia

      • Robin says:

Um….no. Having a BSc means that you took enough math and science courses as an undergrad to qualify for that degree as opposed to a BA. You can earn a BSc in non-scientific fields. Having a BSc does NOT automatically mean you are a scientist. And having a PhD doesn’t mean you’re a doctor in the field of philosophy. It means you hold a doctorate in whatever field you studied. The “philosophy” part of it originates from the Greek “love of wisdom”.

      • Arpeggi says:

I’m very aware of all these things, but if you hold a BSc in a scientific field, you can thus be deemed a scientist as opposed to needing a PhD to call yourself that. In both cases, you’ve received a scientific training. The difference lies in your level of expertise in a specific field, a bachelor degree being more general (you learn, but contribute little) and a PhD meaning you have substantially contributed to a specific field (through publishing your data in peer-reviewed journals, etc.). Ok, sometime the substantial part seems highly subjective, but that is the idea. The doctor (of philosophy) thing is more a joke because the term doctor is most of the time associated with medical doctor (MD), and especially when you’re in health sciences, you spend lots of time having to explain that you’re not that kind of doctor/doctor in training. Though it comes with certain advantages: I had friends getting better credit rates because banks would see “Doctor” and “Faculty of Medicine” and think they were med students instead of PhD students…

But my point remains the same: anyone trained in a scientific field and working in a scientific field is a scientist (and yes, engineers can be called that too)

      • Who ARE these people? says:

You really have to look at the training and the occupation. As for faux doctors, I think people mostly are impressed by the stamina it takes to make it through a doctoral program.

      • ohdear says:

WATP: They aren’t ‘faux doctors’ – the doctorate indicates depth of study. The type of study indicated field – medical (MD), Naturopathic Doctor (ND), A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) education (EdD, which is usually applied research to an institutional related aspect of education) or PhD – the ability to formulate a question of study and proceed through the philosophical professes of question, debate, examine, gather, analyze and interpret data, and formulate a theory or observation. A medical doctor isn’t the only kind of doctor out there.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

Oh dear I was hasty, I should have clarified about subject doctorates other than medical science.

      • ohdear says:

no prob WATP : ) we have such a heavy focus on MDs and PhDs in North America it seems the others are less valued. This has been a great conversation to read.

      • Greenieweenie says:

You can do a research Masters or a taught Masters (professional degree). You can also do a research or a taught PhD.

I did a taught Masters and a research PhD. I was accepted into a research doctorate program on the basis of my list of research publications–not on my degree category. Actually ended up making my dissertation a lot harder to write since I had virtually no formal research training up to that point.

It really is your job experience that matters more. Certainly for Bill Nye, it makes no difference whether or not he has an advanced degree. Same for Bill Gates and anyone else who is employed doing the work.

    • Larelyn says:

I’m late to the party, but I have a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Sciences. My sister has a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry. She is a Scientist III working in a pharma lab, and I’m a Programmer/Analyst II working in an IT department. It’s not the degree that makes you a scientist, but the job you do.

    • bunny_ears says:

I would argue that if you work in a science field (especially Boeing is engineering/science heavy), you’re a scientist. Even though Nye isn’t in industry anymore, he was a scientist once before, unlike Palin…. -_-

I’ve gotten the chance to meet Bill Nye in person several years ago, since he goes back to Cornell every year, and he is one of the COOLEST people I’ve ever meet. Even though I don’t agree with his political views, he’s a smart cookie. The engineering school at Cornell is a pain in the bottom, and mechanical engineering is the hardest program in that school.

Meanwhile, I have no idea where Palin went to school (did she even go to college?). So maybe she should shut up instead of going toe-to-toe against an Ivy League grad.

    • Jwoolman says:

A Ph.D. Is not needed to be a scientist. In many scientific fields, including engineering (which is applied science), the first professional degree is the Bachelor’s degree (college degree). Graduate from the college program and you’re ready to hit the ground running in your field. The Master’s or Ph.D. typically focus on more advanced theoretical work which is more needed if you are going to teach at college or grad school level or if you are a theorist. Higher degrees can make it easier to get promotions in some circumstances, but if you just like messing around in the lab or out in the field that might not matter. (The promotions are likely to take you away from the lab and field work and be more administrative.) But experimentalists like me can get real jobs and do real science with a Bachelor’s degree. My Ph.D. is useful in my work as a scientific translator and looks nice on the resume, but many scientific translators do not have one and do good work with a B.S. My Ph.D. coursework helps me deal with more mathematically advanced topics, but most of the chemistry journal articles and patents I translate honestly don’t require it. My pharmaceutical/clinical trial work certainly doesn’t.

  19. anne_000 says:

What’s the point of Palin saying children should ‘ask those questions’ if the answers are only going to be science-based and therefore contrary to her political ideology-based delusions?

What is it with the far-right in this country when their idols are so stupid? Why is stupid a much sought-after quality for them?

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Questions like when Bristol asked her, “Mommy, why do they want to put their pee-pee there?”

  20. Esmom says:

Some wise CB’er quoted Isaac Asimov yesterday — it’s just as appropriate in this context:

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

    Sigh.

    • jsilly4e says:

I remember this from yesterday! I did a screenshot of it to save it. It’s very appropriate for this post. Sigh is right.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

I remembered it too! Great quote. I have friends who seem proud of their inability to grasp/disinterest in science … and then want to argue about its findings anyway because of this strange reasoning that they’re just as well equipped to argue anyway. No they are not!

  21. Lilacflowers says:

So, Todd is all better now after breaking almost every bone in his upper body just a month ago?

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Yeah. But it due to the laying on of hands and use of snakes. Sarah didn’t let medical scientists near the poor man.

      • lilacflowers says:

Well, thank God she had all the witches exorcised out of Alaska. Otherwise, Todd would have been done for.

  22. This Face Believes You says:

Thank you for the photo of a side-eyeing Bill Nye. I laughed so hard I choked myself! At this rate it will take some extremely destructive climatic events for people to stop this tripe. It infuriates me because the majority of people shilling so hard to deny Climate Change are too old to be affected by it. They are mortgaging the futures of later generations to protect their way of life. In a perfect world the homes and businesses of the Palins and their like would be the first to be destroyed.

    • PK says:

When shifting weather patterns, record heat/cold, sinking coastal cities, widespread creature extinction and crop failures start killing and displacing more white people than brown ones, I’m sure they’ll get right on that. Like anything else that disproportionately affects the world’s poor, it tends to work really well as population control.

  23. blairski says:

Applause! Well said and thank you. Please DON’T stop covering her, we need to know what she’s saying because other people are listening to her!

    A special place in hell…

    • JustCrimmles says:

…which is here. On earth. Because this black hole of common sense and logic and reason exists, with a huge enough platform to spout her nonsense. If Jesus took this wheel, he’d probably steer toward the nearest tree.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

Jesus would put her behind the wheel and stick a smartphone in her hand.

  24. Robin says:

She’s an idiot. And he’s not a scientist.

    • Dlo says:

Um OK not sure how you reached this conclusion with all of the excellent explanations upthread. Maybe you should go read them

  25. lower-case deb says:

meanwhile, i like how she dresses to promote Alaska in the top pic. her white dress reminds out of season tourists of Alaska’s glittery pure white snow powder, her bag reminds leisure hunters of Alaskan grizzly, her ring reminds us of Alaskan moose.

while, the cuff band reminds patriots how she is the Alaskan Xena ready to smite Putin if she ever sees him step on her backyard… cuz she can see him. he better not try.

  26. Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

    Her stupidity physically hurts me.

  27. Lisa says:

I grew up in Seattle in the 80s and 90s, back when Bill Nye was the Science Guy on a local sketch comedy show called Almost Live! He also acted in various sketches. He is a multi-talented guy! If you want some entertainment, I encourage you to look it up on YouTube. Sometimes the experiments failed (it was, after all, live TV), which made it that much more fun.

I was going to write that Palin’s problem is that she can’t understand how someone who is a scientist (as Nye is) would also be entertaining, but then I realized I’m giving her too much credit. I don’t think she’s capable of even that level of thought.

    • wood dragon says:

They used to show it on Comedy Central back in the 90’s. He played a crime fighting super hero called the Speed Walker, I think.
      Funny show.
I especially loved their crime fighting slo-mo fighting ninja too.

  28. Sarah Palin, Ms Alaskan Pioneer herself, supporting a climate change truthing “film” is just fucking peak ignorance. More so than her claiming Nye isn’t a scientist. I run a vegetable and flower farm and I’d like her to try and farm for just one season and see what it’s like. When everything is freezing in late spring after almost no winter. When there is no rain to be seen all season and crop ruining frosts pop up in late summer. What a blight this woman and her whole schtick is to the world. The bears will surely eat her up, bedazzled vest and all, when her precious state melts into a beach.

  29. PK says:

Alaska’s economy runs on oil, so it’s understandable they’d fight the transition to renewable energy sources tooth and nail. She’s just the cripplingly stupid standard bearer of the ignorance, egotism and shortsightedness that’s opened up a multi-billion shortfall in the state budget, so . . . . . good luck to them with that.

Squeezing their eyes shut, sticking their fingers in their ears and screaming at the planet to “CHANGE BACK” is what passes for strategy for Palin and other big oil cronies. History will remember them as the grubby little caesars who screeched away on their fiddles while the planet burned.

  30. pinetree13 says:

    I love Bill Nye!

    Also, Climate change deniers…sigh.

  31. Pansy says:

Legitimate question: why does the ultra-right say there’s no global warming?? How is climate change related to politics at all? I ask this as someone who’s moderately conservative. I do not get the association at all!

    • Who ARE these people? says:

If this question is indeed legit, here’s how it goes:

      Fossil fuels cause climate change.

Fossil fuel companies make huge profits.

Fossil fuel companies share some of their profits with politicians.

Fossil fuel companies deny climate change.

Politicians who get money from fossil fuel companies deny climate change.

Politicians help fossil fuel companies avoid regulation or reduction in the use of their products.

Fossil fuel companies continue to enjoy huge profits.

It’s that simple. Profits from the over-consumption of fossil fuels are used as political hush money.

      • Tiffany :) says:

        Well done!

      • bondbabe says:

Well done, indeed! Can this be taught to all children? Because apparently there are some “grown-ups” who just can’t seem to or refuse to grasp this, and are thereby accelerating the extinction of our planet.

My goodness, how can it be denied? Just yesterday a report came out that the start to Greenland’s ice melt THIS week is the earliest date on record.

Thank you! So money. Money is why they don’t “believe” in it. And the ultra right Americans just drink the kool aid I guess.

  32. Heather H says:

Just came here to say – Please stop feeding the troll by saying her name in the media!!!!!

  33. Dlo says:

I will never forgive McCain for pushing this person on the American people. Why does he hate us?

  34. Lara says:

What a freaking moron. Go away, Sarah. For the sake of humanity just go the hell away.

  35. Chitownmama says:

Kaiser, you couldn’t have said it better…”just like dangerous stupidity and a basic lack of decency can coexist in one person”. !!! Somebody needs to put this woman in her place. As the saying goes, you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

  36. hogtowngooner says:

Sarah Palin is as much of a Vice President as I am.

  37. elns says:

Making me feel good: “And he advocates for good science, for science free of political agenda. All of that can coexist in one person. Just like dangerous stupidity and a basic lack of decency can coexist in Sarah Palin.”

Thanks for that, I can let go of that Palin taste in my mouth now. ha!

  38. Tara says:

He is a scientist! She is so stupid. Just because she only knows him as a children’s TV host does not mean he doesn’t have the science educational background. She needs to check her facts before she opens her mouth with lies.

  39. Tastykakes says:

I’m not american and don’t know a heck of a lot about this Sarah Palin but I’m concerned about her mental acuity. Do they let her drive? I don’t think she should be driving.

  40. Redgrl says:

She is dangerously stupid. I just can’t. Can’t. Every time I see this white trash inbred hack my blood pressure goes up. She is actually bad for my health. Honk for Bill Nye!

  41. jc126 says:

Even if he is not a scientist – he bills himself as the Science Guy, after all – it’s not like he’s presenting himself as a climate scientist doing the research personally, he’s talking about the subject By her logic, she should only ever speak on the subject of “communications” since that is what her degree is in.

  42. donna says:

The latest Sarahpac numbers report have come out, and they are not good. She is hemorrhaging money, spending more than it takes in, for many years in a row, declining constantly. Not much on hand now, so the situation is dire. She will continue to take any appearance that will help pay the bills. It is getting embarrassing.
The next thing we will see her do are commercials for senior supplemental life insurance, and home security and gold bars or something. It’s really bad.

  43. Dr. leroy Poop says:

Simple Sarah failed out of 4 colleges and finally graduated from a non-competitive college in Idaho with a Journalism degree. She really wanted to be that lamestream media she whines about.

  44. Jwoolman says:

Sarah or her sources might mistakenly assume that he can’t be a “real” scientist because he doesn’t have a Ph.D. and thus the title “Dr.” But the Bachelor’s degree in engineering is actually a serious professional degree and when he got it (especially from Cornell) it was all he needed to be a real engineer (more equivalent to a Master’s degree today). A non-thesis master’s degree only takes about a year to get. I have an M.A. in physics only because while in the Ph.D. program, I accumulated enough coursework to qualify. When I was teaching, there was a 3-2 program for engineering students (3 years at a liberal arts college and 2 years at an engineering school) which resulted in a master’s in engineering. Some fields have moved toward the Ph.D. as a needed degree for professional work – that’s really the case today for physics (a college degree is not enough) and to a lesser extent for chemistry (my two fields). Probably a Master’s is expected for chemists today, although a Bachelor’s really does provide the training needed for laboratory work (my B.S. is in chemistry). But not so long ago, the Bachelor’s degree was the first professional degree in the physical sciences and certainly provided a sufficient education to do real work in the field. But the Ph.D. in engineering and in geology, for instance, is really mainly needed for those who plan to teach at college level or above. Most engineers and geologists don’t need it. They really are ready to work after their Bachelor’s. In other words, every field has different expectations for what degree is needed.

So Bill Nye the Science Guy is indeed a fully qualified and fully credentialed scientist and engineer, both by training and work experience. He’s very good at it, also. Sarah might borrow videos of his shows from the library and learn a little something.

  45. Jjdoodle says:

How dare she! Bill Nye is a national treasure.

  46. umila says:

All I can hear is Charlie Day in the back of my mind saying, “You sound like a dumb science bitch”. This lady irks the ever loving crap out of me. My B.S./BA was in Biochem/Anthropology. There are many definitions for a scientist….research scientist, political scientist, etc. As someone mentioned above, an undergraduate degree doesn’t really qualify you to certain titles these days. However, you also have to look at the context of WHEN that person was getting a degree and the amount of experience they have. In my opinion, practical experience says a lot more than book experience. The necessity of continued education depends on the field (as Jwoolman expressed).

I love Bill Nye. He got me excited about science as a kid when I would have been happy to believe that women had two avenues: nursing and education. I’m not downing on those professions whatsoever. My sisters are nurses and people don’t realize the amount of hard work/education they go through to be qualified. Same with educators. They don’t get paid enough for the amount of work they take on. I’m just saying that it got me exposed to other possibilities. Someone please tell me what Sarah Palin is contributing?

On a side note…It makes me super happy to see the diversity on these boards. I have visited Celebitchy ever since I started university and there are lots of fond memories attached to this site.

I honestly think she’s smoking meth. She’s definitely on something and I think it’s more than booze. Rx pill + booze? She’s a little speedy though, which makes me think meth. Something in the milk ain’t clean.

  48. Ursaline (Ursula) says:

Magnoliarose, your comment was awesome. I needed that this morning.

  49. Elena says:

Snort! He’s not a scientist? Seriously

I choked on my coffee. Good, good laugh. Bill Nye has more congitative function in his feet than she has in her entire brain.

    Take a walk, cur.
