Is Kim Kardashian copying Beyonce or just trying to steal focus from Bey?

kim2

Kim Kardashian published this photo on her subscription app and her social media yesterday. It’s actually an advertising image for Pat McGrath’s latest addition to her cosmetics line, called Skin Fetish 003. If this image feels familiar, that’s because people already think that Kim is styled to look a bit like Beyonce, especially since Bey was wearing cornrows and fur in the Lemonade promotional images:

#LEMONADE The Visual Album Is available now on iTunes, Amazon and TIDAL.

A photo posted by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

Still, this campaign was shot weeks/months ago. There is such a thing as coincidence, and it’s not like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian are the only two people in the world who enjoy cornrows and fur coats. That being said, Kim did try to pull focus away from Beyonce on Saturday night, the night when Lemonade dropped. Again, to be fair, she was at a wedding and had likely not even seen Lemonade. She might not have even known how hard Lemonade was trending on social media. But it was still ODD timing that Kim suddenly began posting a series of graphic images from the wedding. You can see Kim’s Instagram here, and here are some of the SFW photos:

So, was Kim passive-aggressively trying to steal Beyonce’s thunder? If she was, it’s cute that she thinks she’s capable of doing that.

  1. perplexed says:

How do you pull off stealing focus from Beyonce when you have no discernible talent?

And, in case, anyone tries to point out that Beyonce has limited talent, she still has more than Kim! Don’t we all?

    • V4Real says:

It could be a coincidence but how does that saying go.

“Sometimes a coincidence is just very good planning.”

  2. roxane says:

Kim, Kim, Kim can’t you just go AWAY.

  3. artpunk44 says:

    Why not both?

  4. Goo says:

Who cares? Sick of both of them… One wishes she was Black, and the other is desperately trying to be White…. Pity both of them.

    • Dani2 says:

Which one is desperately trying to be white?

    • Naya says:

If you think Beyonce is “trying to be white” you havent been paying attention.

    • AlmondJoy says:

      Here we go again 🙄

    • Brea says:

Yeah, Beyoncé just released an album all about empowering black women but she’s “trying to be white”

      log off.

      • Jules says:

Yep, she has been for years…………..look at her fake weaves.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Jules… I’m really surprised at you. Hopefully you’re being sarcastic. Black women’s reasons for wearing weave and trying to assimilate/be accepted/seen as professional and non threatening etc. have been have been discussed countless times here.

      • Marty says:

@Jules- just becuse a black woman wants wear a blonde weave doesn’t mean she’s trying to be white it means that’s the way she wants to wear her hair. Blonde hair doesn’t solely belong to white people.

And if you want to go deeper into it, many black and brown women change their hair to assimilate into a society that have always told their features were ugly. Their skin, their noses, mouths, eyebrows, asses, and ESPECIALLY their hair.

So frankly I don’t care if a sista wants to wear a fro or a weave. As long as she feels beautiful in a society that tries to tear her down, I’m all for it.

      • Goo says:

It is an opinion, people. One that many, many share. You don’t have to agree with it or even like it…. The skin lightening, fake hair, weaves~shall I go on? All to sell herself and her music. As I stated, it is an opinion! Move on..

      • Kitten says:

        Skin-lightening? Lol…mmkay.

      • WTW says:

@Jules, you do realize that Kim wears fake hair as well. So, is she trying to be white, or just trying to have extra luxurious hair? Weave = wannabe white is a false equivalency.

      • Lex says:

Lol @ Marty – for the sake of a balanced discussion…

if dreads/locks do belong to certain races, then blonde hair absolutely ‘belongs’ to white people. Blonde hair is naturally occuring in white people only. Doesn’t mean that others can’t dye their hair that colour or that it’s wrong for others to like the colour. And it also doesn’t mean it’s the same as white people wearing dreads for ‘fun’. But you can’t say one does and the other doesn’t.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

Celebrities/pop stars/actresses of all races end up wearing some kind of extensions, wigs, or weaves, so it’s pretty ignorant and racist to assume that when a black celebrity does it, it must be about wanting to be white. People have got to find ways to deal with celebrities they dislike besides resorting to tired racist stereotypes. Do you people assume that any cis woman who works to keep up an athletic, lean-muscled body for herself secretly wants to be a man and is ‘not empowering women’ too? Because that’s just how stupid your argument is.
@Goo: Seriously, the popular opinion fallacy? Just because an opinion is popular doesn’t mean that it’s accurate or that other people can’t point out the stupidity and bigotry of it. If you want, there are plenty of other sites you can find where nobody will criticize you for dumb, racist, crap you want to say about people you don’t like.
@Lex: That’s actually a popular myth. Blonde hair MOSTLY occurs in white people, (it’s a rare hair color for the human race anyway. Most teens and adults of any race who you see walking around with blonde hair are not wearing their natural hair color), but sometimes, people of other races- including black people- are actually born with blonde hair.

      • Margo says:

I agree with goo whiter as the years go by. I met Beyonce when she was in destinys child, she looks very different to me now.

    • Rhoda says:

Want’s to be white??? I can only chuckle to myself on that one.
      Thanks for the laugh.

    • Tiffany27 says:

      @Goo

Here’s another reply that you so desperately wanted. I’m feeling charitable so here you go.

    • QQ says:

Dont feed the troll today sistren, Not on Lemonade Week, Month of Prince’s glory departing this plane, when we got Tubmans added unto our glow…just dont (this too could apply to Paying attention to Kim’s bird ass Stunts as well come to thibk about it!)

      • AlmondJoy says:

😩 thank you for bringing things back into focus QQ. You’re so right. Let me get to work and focus on stacking these Tubmans 😩

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Just like that QQ reminds us how good the Lord is and how beautifully things are progressing. Ransoms mad about a black woman being proud and vocal in her boackness. Harriet Tubman about to stare every racist individual down from their pocket book and the conversations about race and progress still growing.

        Thank you QQ.

      • LookyLoo says:

I can’t wait to say “stacking these Tubmans”! Whaaat! Shout out to @Almond. :-).

      • Fee says:

Don’t see or ever saw Beyonce as wanting to be white, that’s a first for me. My issue is she lives her life free of black n white issues but brings out the black more when she needs publicity, like ALLcelebrities, sports n musicians, they talk a good talk but when the cameras r off, where r they than? What has Beyonce done for her community? I never checked but her fans might know. She grew up upper middle class n her profanity lyrics are too fake for her. She has class, doesn’t need to be trashy

      • AlmondJoy says:

Lookyloo: I’ll never refer to it as a $20 bill again lol. When I go to Bank of America and the tell asks how I want my money back I’m saying “All Tubmans.”

      • AlmondJoy says:

Fee: look up Beygood, Global Citizen and Chime for Change. That’s a good place to start. You’ll see all of her philanthropic efforts. Currently she has a special fundraiser to distribute water to Flint, Michigan. We only hear a small percentage of what she does, but with a little research you’ll see all the good she’s trying to accomplish.

      • Tiffany27 says:

*Hands raised and waving to the good word from Lady QQ*

      • Sadezilla says:

        Well-said!

      • suzysunshine says:

I swear this is my last comment on the subject of Lemonade! I’m getting way to riled up about this issue and I’m just a middle aged, white woman. I’m the mother of a young adult daughter and I’m grateful to artists who are willing to raise the level of discourse beyond the superficial. Thank you @QQ, @AlmondJoy et al who look beyond the obvious and are making thoughtful, intelligent comments that raise the level of discussion beyond the frivolous, ignorant and one-dimensional. OMG seriously–LEMONADE is about so much more than Becky & hair!!

      • teacakes says:

@Fee – I’m not a fan but it came out earlier this year that Beyonce and Jay-Z have provided bail money for quite a few arrested Black Lives Matter protestors, and that they’ve supported the movement in other ways too. And someone commented about Beyonce donating something like $7 million on the quiet in a previous post, so at the very least, she has put her money where her mouth is, long before she actually spoke about it.

      • Jwoolman says:

I hadn’t even realized people were working to get Tubman on the $20 bill. Wow. A woman who actually did something more useful than planning and waging wars and represents all the others who did the same on whatever scale … A real model of courage and refusal to just accept the way things are (as humans tend to do as they just try to survive) and a very practical response to evil. We need more Tubmans in the past, present, and future.

And she’s on currency people will actually see! The ATMs will be churning out her image every day!!! Can’t get cash from an ATM without seeing her! (Well, once they run out of the other guy.) We can pull out a twenty dollar bill from our pockets and tell the story of the real American heroes to our children!

I do remember when people were working to get a federal holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr. But I never thought it would happen until it did. Good thing other people were more optimistic and persistent. Another wow. A holiday for a man who promoted and represented nonviolent resistance to and noncooperation with evil rather than the usual tired list of warmakers and invaders. I do hope J. Edgar Hoover is spinning so fast in his grave that he stays permanently dizzy in his afterlife (which hopefully is suitably warm).

    • CornyBlue says:

Log off. Go to sleep. When you wake up troll better.

    • Kyle says:

Lol. If anything Beyonce is desperately trying to remind everyone she’s black. All her songs have southern hood accents now and she never says words properly anymore while singing (not that all black ppl do that).

  5. Birdix says:

You get the feeling they might not be invited to many weddings after this…

  6. Castor & Pollux says:

I wish wish wish fur would stop being a thing. So cruel, so garish.

    • Erinn says:

Agreed. I understand like… my grandmother owning furs that my grandfather brought back from way up in Northern Canada much more than people buying furs today. Those furs had been made for the purpose of staying warm in horribly cold climates, and before we had so many alternatives. It still bothers me, but it’s at least understandable.

But I just can’t understand how people keep buying NEW furs. I live in community that has a ton of Mink farms. And it bothers me. Not only is it cruel, it’s also contaminating the lakes around them because they’re not dealing with the waste properly. It’s a lose lose.

      • Wren says:

Exactly. Fur was a necessity for people in extreme climates, and may still be (I refuse to delve deeper into that argument). There was a very good reason to wear fur in certain regions, especially in the days before central heating.

However, the vast majority of us, especially people who live in freaking LA, fur is NOT necessary. It’s a ridiculous luxury that is not only useless but promotes a cruel industry that is deeply under regulated. I absolutely hate that it’s a fashion thing. It’s not even like these morons hunted and killed the animal themselves, which would at least be an accomplishment of sorts. No, they plunked down money for something soft and expensive with nary a thought about how it came into existence. Utter rubbish.

    • Classy and Sassy says:

ITA, and I’m surprised Beyonce doesn’t get more flack for this. I kind of wish she would.

      • WTW says:

A former coworker of mine hated her because of the furs and the weird purse made of ostrich and many other exotic animals. He was also livid that time she wore that leather outfit with cow markings to a vegan restaurant.

    • Magnoliarose says:

I agree. Like Erinn my grandmother had furs and stoles that she left to my mother and they still sit in fur storage. She has no idea what to do with them all. But my grandmother is from a different time.
Fur is ugly to me and the only thing I see is animal cruelty when someone wears it when there are plenty of fake options that look just as good.
I was disappointed that Beyonce wore it at all. Kim is shameless so no surprise there, but I wanted more from Beyonce.

      • mp says:

hey! there are places where you can donate fur coats for animals that need it (injured or orphan), i found this website: http://coatsforcubs.com/

      • Sadezilla says:

@mp, great link, thank you! I don’t have any furs, but sounds like a good way to recycle furs.

      • Magnoliarose says:

THANK YOU! mp, I sent the link to my mother. It would be nice for some good to come out of it and my grandmother would have liked that. She had dogs she adored and loved animals in general. I can’t thank you enough.

    • Angelica says:

I agree. Of all the injustices towards animals that people try to justify (zoos, eating meat from big, ruthless companies, scientific testing), fur is by far the most senseless. Farms that raise beautiful, wild creatures just to beat with a club and skin alive FOR FASHION. It’s disgusting. I’m not even a die-hard activist, I just like to know the facts of anything I participate in that involves animals and fur is my ultimate scum-of-the-earth trigger. I fu**ing can’t.

    • Kyle says:

Is it “real” fur, though? If it were PETA would be all over her or atleast would have penned an open letter by now.

  7. Tifygodess24 says:

Oh trust me, that family knows what’s trending and when they need to step up their game. Not only did they want to overshadow Beyoncé but they also didn’t like the attention Prince was getting. So besides the photos they (Kim and Khloe) started trolling their negative comments on Instagram as well. Everything they do is planned for publicity, I don’t even believe they know how to live an actual authentic life anymore. If they don’t get attention and money they melt.

    • claire says:

It was such a hilarious juxtaposition though. While Beyonce was putting out this creative masterpiece, Kim was showing what she had to offer, and it was nothing, and try-hard and pathetic. There was just no match. Watching her get dragged for it was pure entertainment!

    • WTW says:

God forbid Prince get attention upon his death! How dare he?

  8. Narak says:

The coat makes Kim look like a well groomed Sasquatch.

  9. aims says:

Firstly, gross. That picture with her and Kanye is now burned in my brain.

Secondly, it must burn her ass that Beyonce has talent. Yes, beyonce is tiresome and all the things that people have said. But there’s no question the girl can sing and seems to be smart enough.

Kim just can’t seem to take a weekend off. Between her dressing inappropriately for a wedding or wearing a ridiculously tight clothing. It’s all about Kim.

    • Wren says:

Kim is smart enough to know that if she does take time off she’ll quickly become irrelevant. See how we’re paying attention to her? No attention is bad attention. She knows she’ll fade fast if we quit talking about her.

Beyonce, on the other hand, can take time off and still be Beyonce. Without attention there is no Kim. Whether you like her music or not, Beyonce has an extensive body of work that will live on well after she fades from the spotlight. Kim does not and she knows it.

  10. Turtle says:

Its not beyond me that Beyonce was wearing Kims uniform of fur, leggings and stupid shoes in Lemonade.

  11. lou says:

Kim’s cornrows look so fake! There’s no hint of stray hairs. Beyonce’s look far more real. I know Kim’s image has been ‘shopped to Shoptown, but still. Her real hairline is that creepy.

The pics of her and Fish Sticks make me want to vom.

  12. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Nothing a Kardashian does is by accident.

They’ve been taking a beating in terms of reputation lately and having so many of their business ventures fail/people actively mocking them because of Rob and Chyna.

I’m sure on some level they were trying to pull focus (it feels a little too coincidental that Kim posted her first pic at 8:59 a minute before the 9pm premiere of Lemonade) because between Chrissy Teigan’s baby, the celebrity deaths, and etc. no one was paying attention to them.

  13. MiniMe says:

Well, it would be entertaining to see the rabid fans of the Beyhive go after Kim. That would be a Twitter/Instagram battle of epic proportions!

    • NewWester says:

Imagine if the Beyhive also went after Kanye too! Twitter/Instagram would have a complete meltdown!

  14. Pepper says:

The Pat McGrath campaign was shot long before Beyonce released that image. They aren’t even that similar, and the product has been slated to come out today for months.

The wedding photo’s seemed more like a Kanye thing to me what with the weird countdown and faux artiness.

  15. Pandy says:

Oh please. Of course she was. Pathetic.

    • JFresh says:

+1 So obvious it’s kind of staggering…. Like, she really, really does not have her own thing. She must feel so bereft inside. Can Kris Jenner send her daughter to school for a degree and training in a trade of some sort? I wonder if Kim has ever read a book. Bet she hasn’t.

  16. Talie says:

They had a flop week for attention. Even Kylie and Blac Chyna barely got any attention because Prince died just as they were playing their games.

  17. CornyBlue says:

Beyonce is legit one of the most stunning and captivating woman I have ever seen. Thats all I got

  18. Harryg says:

For some reason this look makes me think of the monster-creature in “Alien.”

  19. sherry says:

I don’t think she was copying, I think she’s just desperate for attention (as always). I was wondering the other day what Kim will be doing in 15 years when she’s 50 and some other hot woman is sucking up all the oxygen and no one is paying attention. Especially if it’s her younger sisters.

    • Kyle says:

That’s an interesting thought. I remember I never thought Paris Hilton would go away when I was teen – the poof – she was gone and can’t pay a pap to follow her silly arse now. Kim helped that happen but her time is coming. I think society’s just about done with these famed4nothing troupe. With social sites even talented celebs feel like famous for nothing dolts too so who needs a Kardashian to hate anymore?

    • AlmondJoy says:

Random question, but are you Sherry from Crazydaysandnights?

      • sherry says:

I’m not the Sherry you’re thinking of, because I remember that Sherry. I haven’t been on that site in a couple of years! But thanks for reminding me, I may go check it out again!

  20. Ji-yun says:

No contest between the two. Beyonce made something culturally significant. Kardashian piggybacks on the zeitgeist and makes merry appropriating aspects of the culture that Lemonade celebrates, a culture that seemingly the entire Kardashian/Jenner clan wears as a costume in some ill advised tomfoolery in their Calabasas mansions. Beyonce wins this round and all future ones in this contest.

  21. Nancy says:

Is the sky blue? Of course she posted the pics to shade the shine on Lemonade. If the Kardashians aren’t trending, it’s a bad day. She can’t use talent, she has to rely on her ginormas mammary glands and bigger than Manhattan butt which I’m guessing she thinks are special. Earth to Kim, they’re not.

  22. Jean Grey says:

I know we all dislike Kim, but she’s been rocking this look since the winter and before Bey released formation. Is she an attention whore who’s probably revelling in the publicity? Absolutely. I dont care enough either way but it’s not like Beyonce hasn’t been accused of stealing before anyway

  23. anniefannie says:

The posting pics 1 minute prior just seems sooo suspect. But what truly baffles me is does KK really feel she’s on a level playing field? Beyoncé just released an epic album addressing far reaching societal issue’s vs vomiting inducing pics. If it was an attention grab its a major fail and KK looks endlessly foolish…

  24. lizzie says:

these kardashian girls need to stop with the cornrows.

    • JFresh says:

Do they have people around them telling them that it’s okay, and that it looks good on them? BAFFLING.

    • Santia says:

Oh, stop! What are these “cornrows” you speak of? Them there are “boxer braids.” They’ve been re-branded and re-named, don’t you know?

  25. Guest says:

Can we talk about thee fact, that some people would consider this family as “fashion icons”
When they wear a style until the wheels fall off?
Kim with her jackets slung on her shoulders. Kim with her choakers.Kim with her braids. Kim with her ugly nude colors. Kim with body suits. Kim with her braids.Kim with her fur coats.Kim with braids.Khloe with braids.Kylie with braids.North with braids…
That’s literally all she does. She wears the same thing. Then her family get a whiff of it and wears it to death.
When Kylie said she started wigs, she ment she introduced it to her coven so they could wear it forever.
Every K/J has been wearing them.

  26. me says:

Why does Kim’s name always have to be added to anything and everything? Even when Prince died, when MJ died, the Kardashian’s names were being thrown around. Now Beyonce puts out a new album, and guess what? Kim’s name is being bounced around once again. Enough already.

    • Mare says:

To be fair, Kim was mentioned because Prince told her to get off the stage. That was funny!

  27. lucy says:

Whatever Kim’s doing, we don’t care.

  28. Deedee says:

Kim has been wearing braids and fur since forever. Khloe too, I think. It is so old.

  29. drnotknowitall says:

I’m pretty sure K would have seen stills or footage of Lemonade before it came out, thanks to her hubby. Since the Klan has no creativity or imagination and they all steal ideas and looks, I am going to go ahead and say yes to your question. Kim is a talent-less user and opportunist.

    • suzysunshine says:

Yup–she’d likely have access to stills. Photo after photo exists of the Kardashians stealing a look and taking credit for it as their own. Kim and her family are nothing to aspire to and contribute nothing of real value beyond click-bait. I was amazed at the people jumping on the empowerment bandwagon when she recently posted her semi-nude from a couple of years ago. Kim is not about female liberation or empowerment. She is about marketing and manipulation to monetize her own brand. She shouldn’t be shamed or trolled for posting whatever she wants–but let’s not pretend she’s some sort of symbol of originality, artistry or female empowerment.

      • drnotknowitall says:

I remember about 20 years ago, people who were celebrated (celebrities) were people who had talent or an important voice. It was always like that. I don’t understand what changed. I look at the world my children are growing up in and it saddens me.

  30. Mrs. Odie says:

Kim: (whiny, nasal, uptalking) I need attention.
Kim’s team member #1: You could post another naked selfie.
Kim’s team member #2: I have one Photoshopped and ready to go.
Kim: (whiny, nasal, shrill) We just did thaaaat.
Kim’s team member #1: What about corn rows? Armenians don’t have corn rows. And people pretty much consider you white anyway.
Kim team member #2: Armenians actually qualify as caucasian. In fact, the Caucasus Mountains are partly in Armenia.
Kim (whiny, nasal, etc.): Oh my gawd! You’re fired! I don’t even know what you just said right now! Somebody call my hairdresser! Corn rows will be amaaazing.

  31. NewKay says:

She’s just one giant walking cultural appropriation. She just needs to stop.

  32. missmerry says:

im late to the party but i think ti’s hilarious how Cardashian has no baby hairs and Beyonce’s are just perfect.

goes to show not every woman has to laser away her insecurities
