Lady Gaga & Kate Hudson do Versace for the Met Gala: terrible or fun?

There was a notable lack of Versace on the red carpet at the Met Gala last night. Part of that is cyclical – Versace, as a fashion house, has been on the down-swing for several years. Part of it is by design though, as in Donatella Versace only wanted to dress a handful of women. I don’t know if Donatella wanted to dress Kendall Jenner, but that’s the way it happened. I kind of think Donatella only meant to dress Kate Hudson and Lady Gaga. Gaga and Kate posed together on the carpet and I think we’re meant to compare and contrast and treat these two looks as part of the same theme. So what’s the theme? Robot bride and groom? Theme: looking terrible.

Is it weird that Kate Hudson’s Versace is more offensive to me than whatever Gaga has going on? I mean, we expect this sort of nonsense from Gaga. She can clean herself up and pretend to be mainstream for a few months, but eventually the Old Gaga will come out and she’ll be staggering around a red carpet in her bedazzled panties. Kate Hudson KNOWS BETTER than this. Kate Hudson should have just said no to this origami bridal nightmare. Also: I hope to God that’s a wig on Gaga. I hope she didn’t honestly do that to her hair, although who makes a wig that looks like that? It’s like Joan Cusack-in-Working-Girl style.

Gaga the 80s want their wig back.

    • Kitten says:

And Kate got extensions really quickly huh? Guess she finally realized how awful that bob looked on her.

  2. Tifygodess24 says:

Good grief. No. On both accounts.

  3. mme says:

I like the bedazzled thing Gaga is wearing inside. it looks like something Beyoncé would rock on stage.

    • Fran says:

Yeah, with a skirt or a pair of pants the outfit would have been good!

    • Mgsota says:

Yeah, call me crazy but I really like Gaga’s look from the waist up. I even like her make up and hair, it just works for me! I HATE her shoes though.

  4. Zadie says:

Gaga really needs to stop messing with her hair, the hairline is becoming a disaster.

  5. hey-ya says:

…don’t you see Kate’s laughing…maybe she wanted something different…Gaga always wears the same style shoes tho..

  6. D says:

How does Gaga walk in those shoes? Does she have great balance or do her assistants carry her around?

    • Annaloo. says:

It’s great balance. I saw a clip of her climbing the stairs in those things.. She was gliding.

Seriously, Snapchat has the best coverage of this event! I can’t shut up about it

      • CoKatie says:

I gotta tell you, Annaloo, that is ah-mazing. I see so many beautifully dressed women worldwide completely DESTROY their appearance by not being able to walk in high heels. It just detracts from them. I think I’m picky about it because I can. Pretty much any height, effortlessly (thanks Mom for all that training! ).

But I COMPLETELY bow down to Gaga. Those shoes are something else, and like you said, she GLIDES in them. Wow! I couldn’t do it.

Kate Hudson is such a wannabe Goldie Hawn from circa 1970. Always copying her grin, smile and poses at events. Don’t get me wrong: She is a beautiful girl. But that same image all the time makes me yawn. Cut to Susan Sarandon and her beautiful daughter.

While I like what Gaga is rocking here, I don’t think it goes with this venue. The Grammy’s perhaps? I would love to see her do something more traditional, but a Gaga twist at something like this.

  8. Jayna says:

The detail on Gaga’s outfit is beautiful, but the problem is the bottom half or lack thereof. She’s worn a dance outfit a million times with her clunky shoes, so it’s just another day for Gaga. The hair is a disaster. It is so ’80s.

I adore Kate’s and she looks fantastic. I thought it went with the theme, didn’t it? I’m unsure. I think I understand the theme, but then I don’t get it a lot on many of the outfits, where they even followed it at all.

    • Mimz says:

I also love Kate’s look and I think it went with the theme. I have no nice words to say about Lady gaga so I’m not going to say anything at all.

    • Bridget says:

It feels like a bad copy of on the McQueen outfits Gaga wore when she first hit big. And Donatella is no McQueen

  9. mellie says:

How in the world do you make Kate Hudson look a bit heavy?! This dress did it, from the side it looks terrible. There are no words for Lady Gaga’s mess….

  10. Dangles says:

Gaga looks bad in a bad way. She looks like an extra from Beyond Thunderdome

  11. Rae says:

    No. Just no.

  12. Annaloo. says:

Kate Hudson’s Snapchat makes me hate my life. It also makes me wonder when she ever sees her kids, she’s never home. This dress looks like she’s in another one of her bad romcoms. Not her best.

  13. Jenn4037 says:

Pants or no pants, I think Gaga is theme approprite.

    • Mixtape says:

Agreed! Plus, when it’s everyone else’s night to go a little Gaga, Gaga has a lot of pressure to up the ante.

  14. Marianne says:

Lady Gaga’s look is a bit too rock n roll, but at least it looks more futuristic than Kate’s look. I think Gaga should have chose a different wig/make-up.

  15. Sisi says:

Gaga’s jacket kinda looks like a motherboard circuit, which is cool.
It seems Kate’s dress is made from sewingpattern parts, so an hommage to construction, which is a nice idea, but the execution is poor. Their looks both try and show what’s on the inside it seems.
    they aren’t strong enough though.

In general there was just too much bridal wear at the gala imo. Very boring.

  16. SilkyMalice says:

Why does Gaga always want us to look up her nose?

  17. Tig says:

It’s too funny- I watched Hayley Atwell on Lipsynch Battle. The shoes she had on for her Gaga number are better than the shows Gaga is wearing here!
Didn’t FKA Twigs wear Versace? It wasn’t too theme-y either, but she looked amazing.

  18. lucy2 says:

Gaga looks horrible. Kate’s is pretty bad too.

  19. OTHER RENEE says:

Forget the awful hair and outfit, what has Gaga done to her face? So bland, so unrecognizable!

  20. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Love Kate’s look, the layers of playing and folds look so beautiful. She was one of my wins of the night for staying on the freaking theme.

As for Gaga…everything about this look was sad. Everything. Literally everything.

  21. Happy21 says:

They both look terrible. That being said, however, what Lady GG is wearing looks pretty comfortable compared to some of these dresses I’ve seen.

  22. Carol says:

Gaga is a throwback to the 80s here. Kind of like Cher. I don’t even get Kate Hudson’s look. What’s futuristic about Kleenex?

  23. kri says:

    I can’t.

  24. tacos and tv says:

I’m saying yes to kate’s dress. She looks great and I like that dress a lot. I think it brings drama and it’s rather fun. I can’t with Gaga anymore. Actually, I stopped “can’ting” with her a long time ago.

  25. Jade says:

Sorry, I love Gaga’s costume. Fits the theme to a T. It’s a costume. However, I do wish there was a nice bottom instead of going bottomless again.

  26. rudy says:

The dress Gaga wore to the after party was so much better.
