Kendall Jenner: ‘I’m very intuitive, so I’m good at feeling out how people are’

June July Cover

I’m slowly coming around to Kendall Jenner-as-model. I used to just roll my eyes and mutter about nepotism, but as Kendall’s modeling career gets more heat and she gets more editorial work, I’m not hating it. She photographs well. She looks a lot like a young Ali McGraw, and I love Ali McGraw, so it’s a good association. I don’t even hate Kendall’s new cover editorial for Harper’s Bazaar, shot by Karl Lagerfeld. The photos are sort of pleasantly bland. I think she was going for sexy and modern, but that’s not coming across (though her hair looks great). Anyway, while I’m currently okay with Kendall’s career, you couldn’t pay me to find her an interesting interview subject. She’s not as vapid as Kylie, but Kendall just is NOT interesting. Even doing a dual interview with Karl Lagerfeld doesn’t make her more interesting. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

On being raised in the public eye: “We were brought up in this abnormal world, if that’s what you want to call it. I feel like a lot of people say that kids who grow up in that kind of world go crazy. But it has everything to do with how your parents raise you. I was raised so normally, or as normally as I could have been.”

On what she thought she wanted to be when she grew up: “I’ve always loved animals. I rode horses for 10 and a half years, so I thought I was going to be a professional horseback rider and then a vet. I used to play these vet video games.”

On meeting new people and being closed off: “I’m not super open to new people. I have a small group of people I trust. I’m very intuitive, so I’m good at feeling out how people are, like if they have bad intentions. Sometimes I’m very closed off, which annoys me, but I think it’s for the best.”

On her taste in music: “I went to Justin Bieber’s concert the other night. Of course I have the fever! He’s a really good friend of the family’s, so we all went to support him. Kanye went two nights in a row. He’s a huge fan – I was shocked. He was dancing around the whole night, having so much fun”

She loves Beyonce too: “Beyoncé. Oh, my God, are you kidding? I am 100 percent a huge fan of Beyoncé. If I see her, I will faint. I’ve met her before. I just get really nervous and quiet—I just shut up and bow down.”

She’s stalked by paparazzi: “Yes, they wait outside my house every single day. It’s so crazy to me because it’s stalking at this point. When I say every day, I’m not kidding. I don’t understand how that is legal. There should be some kind of Sunday off or something.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

I look at paparazzi photos all day, every day, and so I end up getting a sense of who the biggest paparazzi targets are. And much like the Elizabeth Olsen thing, I have to wonder if there’s something I’m missing? Is Kendall Jenner as famous as she thinks she is? Unlike Olsen – who really seemed to have inflated sense of her own celebrity – Kendall does get pap’d when she’s working in Paris, or at LAX, or at a nightclub, or filming KUWTK. But… there aren’t photos of her every day. And I’m pretty sure the whole clan lives in a gated estate, so how are there paparazzi waiting outside her house every day?

Wow. She doesn’t seem like a very good model? Except for the glossy photoshop and professional make up half the women on my Facebook page have pictures taken in the same pose and look just as good and often better.

  2. Nancy says:

She was force fed into this life by her “normal” mother and sister. To even whimper about the paps outside her door is rather a moot point. Ask and you shall receive. I get so confused when anyone regardless of their age thinks Justin Bieber is talented, why do they think that? Oh right, he’s a good friend of the family, especially Kourtney and Kylie….

    • Fran says:

Nobody seems to remember a very old KUWTK episode where Kris Jenner organised Kendall first audition or smth to be a model. She was YOUNG and she hated every second of it. She was crying and throwing a tantrum because she was shy and she couldn’t handle to be in public.
So, yes…this must rrrreally be a labor of love, or rather a diabolical act by mama Satan Jenner.
Also, that cover? Ugly. Doesn’t even look like her!

      • Nancy says:

I remember it Fran. I watched the early years. She made a portfolio and Kylie was extremely jealous and tried to ruin it for her. Kim took her to NY and wanted her to do runway, which at the time Kendall wanted no part of. In the confessional, she said, Kim was jealous because she was too short to do a runway. I’m not proud I know this much. Ugh.

      • Fran says:

Nancy, ahah yes, me neither, I used to watch it sporadically on E!. Those times have long gone, but that really made an impression on me because I really felt for this little girl not wanting to do whatever her family wanted her to.

    • Chelly says:

I must admit i truly hate what im about to say bc I am in no way a Beiber fan & never caught the “fever”…not even a chill, however (deep breath), the kid is actually talented. He really can sing, he really can dance, & he really can play several instruments. But hes such a troubled douchy kid that all of that is swept under the rug at this point. Ok…i’ll jump off this soapbox now & cut my tongue out

      • Nancy says:

        LOL!!!

      • susanne says:

I never heard his music until recently, and then fell in love with whatever that song is…Love Yourself. Stuck in my head for weeks until Prince passed, and now it’s His Purple Majesty playing 24/7 on my mental playlist.
It’s embarrassing. i have a tween daughter, and I used to tease her about the Beibs, even though she’s not into him or any of the boy band stuff (thank you, universe). I had to own up to my problem and take the abuse.

  3. Kitten says:

I’m starting to wonder if I might still be drunk from last night because I actually liked this interview.

  4. Felice. says:

Thing about paps find their houses is that I believe you can register under a different entity so your name isn’t on public record. Maybe they find that out too but who knows. I’m not a home owner so I don’t know how accurate that is.

    • Fee says:

Their known to call paps in advance and let them know where they’ll be. No other side roll celebrity has paps up their behind as much cause no one knows their schedule. Unlike them who supposedly work hard yet r seen filming around l.a,

  5. Mel says:

I’m sorry but I just see “vacancy” in her face. She has no spirit or oomph. A hot bod does not a super model make….

  6. Myrna says:

    She’s gorgeous.
I feel like she gets a lot of hate simply because she’s part of that vile family, which isn’t fair.
I’m a fan and rooting for her – hoping she surrounds herself with good people and finds a way to mature and flourish.

    • Starkiller says:

I get what you’re saying-she shouldn’t be judged, it’s not as if she asked to be born into that family. But There are millions and millions of people who get a lot of hate because of their family, or because of where they were born, or because of a litany of other reasons that they never asked for and are totally out of their control. Is it fair? Of course not. Is it part of life? Absolutely.

  7. Candy says:

I like her. I think she is doing the best she can with the life she was dealt in this world.
I mean, she could have turned out like Kylie who ovbiously has issues…..

    • Nancy says:

I agree with that. Kendall has always seemed like the Marilyn Munster of the family. She’s pretty without being fake like all of her sisters. She is Marsha to Kylie’s Jan. She has said many a time, she spends most of her time away from home, which in her case, is a smart choice.

    • Lynnie says:

The only reason she didn’t turn into Kylie is because she was genetically blessed. Otherwise I could see her growing up to be a mixture of Kourtney’s profile and Kim’s quiet mean streak.

Kylie probably wouldn’t have turned into Kylie either if it wasn’t for her needy personality and ability to be influenced super easily.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I watched their show ( and I’m not ashamed! I am a little bit lol) and Kylie is much nicer than Kendall. Kendall always seemed bratty and rude. She was either sulking or throwing hissy fits. Kylie just seemed needy and abandoned by everybody.

      • Taki says:

I agree. I thought at first Kendall is above them, but she’s more of a diva than Kylie is.

  8. Lex says:

The thing is, her modeling career is actually going downhill. She barely got booked for anything the past few seasons, especially if you compare her to her counterpart Gigi. She only has a few contracts with big names, and she barely gets magazine covers. She is not a great model and its reflecting in the industry. Maybe she’ll get a resurgence, who knows. The girl is incredibly dull though.

  9. Mar says:

Hate that cover but she’s growing on me

  10. mary simon says:

Intuitive. Kendall’s first four syllable word. Work it Kendall!

  11. Patricia says:

She should have been a vet instead. She could have gone off and owned the most beautiful ranch money can buy, and lived out her life helping animals.
But wait, she wouldn’t get any attention that way.

  12. SJO says:

Whatever. I think I’ll just keep “rolling my eyes and muttering nepotism”

  13. UCatwoman says:

Yep, those vet video games totally teach you what need to learn to be a vet. As opposed to say, interacting with animals and shadowing workers in a vet clinic. I got my MD by playing Operation. Nailed that funny bone every time!

    • Hazel says:

      My thought exactly!

    • susanne says:

That was so odd…I’m imagining a game in which you have to click to feed, water, and medicate animals, clean out their cages.
This is a perfect metaphor for how the K Klan sees the world, regular things like occupations.

  14. guest says:

I love how this family turns on someone whenever they break up ,I just read a headline about Kim saying, “Kim Kardashian Reveals Kylie Jenner & Tyga’s Relationship Made Her ”Uncomfortable,” Says Their Romance ”Broke” Blac Chyna’s Heart”
Okay? so why didn’t you sit Kylie down and tell her this?
How come Khloe and the reast of the family talked crap about Amber and Chyna when they expressed their betrayal? Tyga is trash, but you didn’t show any remorse about the relationship at all.
Chyna was the bad guy before, but now since the public warmed up to her all of a sudden you felt bad back then?

    • Lynnie says:

I absolutely hate Tyga and his evil groomer ways, but I hate how the Kardashians always try to wash their hands of it and appear saintlike even more. Takes two to tango

  15. ohdear says:

I only read the caption, I have no interest in reading about this family, but I do worry about the ability to read social cues and feelings for a generation/segment of the population of kids raised by moms with botox. It must be weird to meet someone whose angry at you and their face contorts after engaging with adults whose faces do not move. (disclaimer – I get botox for migraines – my injections are in the side and back of my head and a bit at my temples, and I can move my face so I am not bashing botox. But hollywood kids must be impacted by the lack of facial cues from the adults in their world. It would be an interesting study.)

    • guest says:

I read somewhere that botox makes it hard to emote, and I emoting is tied to are feelings. So when people aren’t physically able to smile, because of botox its harder to get happy…IDK, don’t quote me on this..I may be wrong. (I probably am)

      • susanne says:

There is definitely research out there on smiling and how it can effect the brain- a feedback loop sort of thing.
This makes perfect sense to me. There is nothing like the feeling of laughing and smiling until my face hurts. I was just talking to someone an hour ago about how good laughing is- we worked a bit too hard at work today, got kinda punchy and all Friday on a Thursday. We needed some good laughs and took them; a good day.

    • Ayra. says:

I have this mental image of someone screaming at me but their face is stuck pouting, I’m chuckling a bit too much right now.

  16. Ayra. says:

She irks me. But what I find interesting is that many people have said that between Kendall and Kylie, Kendall is the one with the worst attitude and Kylie’s actually quite nice. I mean, when looking at the (old) KWTK episodes, it’s not that far fetched to believe it too.

  17. Sharkeee says:

This might sound odd but even though I don’t think she’s a great model, I think it’s good that she has her modeling career. Even though she didn’t go to college, in some ways modeling offered some similar opportunities: living independently, meeting peers from all over, and learning from influential people. She doesn’t live in the shadow of that Calabasas enclave and I think it’s for the best.

  18. Izzy says:

Obviously not that intuitive, or she’d know how much most of us want her and her family to just go away. 4EVAH.

  19. rudy says:

She sounds cute in the interview and looks gorgeous in the photos.
But the pictures are boring. Clothes are boring. Colors are boring.

  20. huncamunca says:

Although we do have a recent crop of Instagram models with famous parents, nepotism in the fashion industry is nothing new at all. In fact, most of the UK models (in particular) came from wealthy, aristocratic families. I’m not saying this practice is right or fair, but it’s been a standard.

  21. Ruth Nineke says:

Kendall has her own condo in LA. I love the show. She’s pretty boring and shy-ish but I think she absolutely has the body of a model and photographs phenomenally. All the rest is exactly what it is. Just wanted to let the writer know she doesn’t live in Calabasas with the rest.
