Kit Harington on his films: ‘I really regretted them, and I will not do it again’

kit1

As we learned last month, Kit Harington and Rose Leslie are really happening. There were rumors about them for years, basically ever since their characters (Jon Snow and Ygritte) fell in love on Game of Thrones. I do think they started dating years ago, but that it was an on-and-off thing for a while. But they’re “on” right now. And Kit is actually surprisingly sweet about how he fell in love with Rose. Kit covers the latest issue of L’Uomo Vogue – you can see his full profile here. He chats about GoT, Rose and doing Doctor Faustus on the London stage. Some SPOILERS for Game of Thrones, if you’ve been living under a rock! Some highlights:

Maintaining the “Jon Snow is dead” story: “Having to maintain absolute secrecy for so long has been a formidable test for understanding the psychology of other people on the basis of assumptions made. What I realized is that many people feel they have a much stronger connection with Jon Snow than I do”.

He likes pulling his Jon Snow hair back into a ponytail: “It actually helps me to blend in, to not be recognized on the street”

His forays into film: “I made some so-called opportunistic choices for my career in the past. They turned out to be mistakes, I really regretted them, and I will not do it again.”

Doing stage work: “Faustus was the best choice I could have made between the various options that have been presented to me. An instinctive choice, like all the ones I plan to make in the future”.

He’s superstitious about performing on stage: “I kiss a crucifix three times, I blow kisses at the photos of my parents hanging in my dressing room, and I kiss the stage floor three times… The diagnosis is clear, I can see it myself: I’m an obsessive-compulsive…”

He doesn’t watch a lot of movies: “I love cinema, obviously, but I’m not one who sees a lot of films. I don’t like entering the imagination of someone else when I’m working on my own imagination. I experience it as an intrusion, as an overload of work. I dedicate so much time already to work in this period that I have to feel like few free hours I have are exclusively mine. What I do outside of the Duke of York’s? I go to the gym, take photos, mostly portraits, very black and white. Nothing exceptional.”

He owns his own home in Islington: “A real house, with 5 bedrooms, bought with my earnings from Game of Thrones. I am fully aware of what a privilege it is to own a house like this at age 29, when virtually all of my peers in London would feel lucky to own a studio flat.”

His favorite memory from filming Game of Thrones: “The three weeks in Iceland when we were shooting the second season. Because the country is beautiful, because the Northern Lights are magical, and because it was there that I fell in love… If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it’s becomes very easy to fall in love…”

[From L’Uomo Vogue]

Come on, that was sweet! Admit it! I’m the first person to roll my eyes at SadFace Kit, but hearing him talk about falling in love with Rose in Iceland is really sweet. And yes, he sounds borderline OCD, although I think it’s probably more of stage-actor superstition thing, and just his little routine to calm himself. Anyway, this is one of the better interviews I’ve read with him – he even admits that he’s got it pretty good, there’s no whining about being a hunk, and the interview isn’t littered with lies. Yay! As for his “regrets” about his film work… was it Kit being opportunistic, or were those crappy films (Pompeii!) the only scripts he was offered?

Kit’s never been a very good actor but I like him. I’ve always got the impression he’s very self-aware and with a good sense of humor about himself.

    • Bug says:

He was hilarious in Seven Days in Hell. He can do comedy.

      • amilu says:

I was coming here to say just that. He was cracking me up in 7DiH. I would love to see him do more comedy.

  2. Whatwhatnot says:

That was sweet. He’s learning the PR ropes. Always though he was a decent guy. But I’m biased because I love Jon Snow.

  3. Skins says:

I thought “7 Days in Hell” the tennis spoof he did on HBO was really funny

  4. trilby227 says:

I really started to like him he played the tennis player in “7 days of Hell” on HBO. Indubitably!

  5. Cali says:

I really wish they hadn’t killed off Ygritte. But I’m thrilled that at least two of the siblings have reunited..FINALLY. I have higher hopes for the current season just because of this tiny glimmer of sunshine. haha

One thing that strikes me is that it’s okay for some male actors to moan and/or regret their films, but if a woman does it, they’re blasted for complaining and being ungrateful.

    • Lex says:

His love for Ygritte still burns inside him. Will seeing his red headed sister give him some confusing thoughts? Hehe

      • Liv says:

What I thought when they met in the last episode! She’s also a redhead! 🙂 Will they end up together? I mean they are cousins….

  6. Lucky says:

Isn’t his family super rich and even royal?Even if Game of Thrones never happened he still wouldn’t be living in a studio flat.

    • tsc says:

I think it’s Rose’s family that is super rich. But he also might be rich, idk

    • belay says:

      No.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Actor Kit Harington Insists He’s ‘Not’ Posh Despite Having Royal Blood:

Harington said that his grandfather was a baronet and that he is a descended of Charles II. But, this does not mean that he grew up like a rich kid. He said that it is infuriating when journalists immediately stereotype him as a posh actor. He also stated that his mom shares the same opinion and she has been telling him to inform the journalists that he went to a state school and not to a preppy boarding school.

Harington attended the Sixth Form College after going to Chantry High in Worchester, England. In his interview, he shared that it was difficult to make it in the acting industry as an actor, especially because he was not independently wealthy. After all, the big break for any actor cannot be predicted and it may be around the corner or years away.

    • Size Does Matter says:

I thought his dad owned a bookstore or something, and that’s why he read all the books before being cast.

    • Cee says:

I think he meant it as being able to buy his house with his own money instead of having to ask mummy and daddy for a loan or the gift of a house/flat.

    • HappyMom says:

They are both from aristocratic families. His may not have much money now, but they definitely have an impressive lineage.

  7. belay says:

I met him after performing Dr.Faustus (very intense).

He was so sweet and charming. Lovely guy!

  8. Maria says:

“If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it’s becomes very easy to fall in love”

finally an actor who admits it.

  9. Pinky says:

I hate to be so shallow, but…can someone please get that girl some tooth whitener? No, not veneers or braces or anything excessive like that. Just a little peroxide and baking soda.

    • AG-UK says:

Are you kidding this is England they aren’t that bothered. I think now they seem to be but normally I would say no. This is just my opinion as an American living here for 17 years.

    • Lex says:

      Yeah, no,
The rest of the world doesn’t have the weird obsession with stark white teeth – it’s unnatural and creepy. Her teeth are not yellow at all, they’re a natural shade of white (not bleached to death).
You are the weird ones, not the rest of us.

    • Linn says:

Yep, please let’s have him ruin what’s probably perfectly healthy teeth just because some people have a crazy obsession about unnaturally white teeth.

    • Valois says:

Baking soda sounds like the best idea ever… much wow.

  10. Fan says:

I hope he is not talking about Pompeii. That’s my favorite film.

    • sills says:

I loved Pompeii! I love anything historical re-enactment-like, cheesy though it may have been it was a fun ride through what must have been a horrifying moment. And Kit got the job done.

  11. FingerBinger says:

That Michael Jackson styling on the cover gets a thumbs down.

  12. ReineDidon says:

I have always felt he is very sweet, charming and overall a decent human being.

But, aren’t we going to talk about how bad that magazine cover is ? 🙈

    • Olenna says:

I like Kit but, yes, let’s talk about the cover. It’s tragic. Tragically funny. I laughed when I first saw it. He looks like a gangsta-playa vampire.

  13. Soprana says:

In defense of his GOT acting, Jon Snow is supposed to be kind of a sullen grumpycat, not exactly personable. The role isn’t necessarily juicy, unlike Tyrion or even Ramsay. That’s a tall order to play for any actor regardless of skill level.

  14. elns says:

    1) Aww shucks for the on set love. Because I love them together on and off stage, Just sweet and genuine looking. I bet they bicker over laundry. “I don’t know! What can I dry? What do I have to hang?!?” “Just wash your own crap!”
    2) That magazine cover is hideous. Greasy werewolf in a high school stage set of Into the Woods. He is so much better than that! They had so much to work with and they give us that, sigh.
    3) I find it interesting people have a hard time understanding that just because someone in your family had money at some point or you have a famous family doesn’t mean everyone in that family lived the fancy life.
    4) he should watch more movies, even shitty movies. his PR is improving, but I think it could help alleviate that SadFace Kit thing even more.

  15. BB says:

I have a friend who worked in a hotel(bar) were Kit stayed, and he said Kit was a very nice and down-to-earth guy; Kit even invited him for a smoke and a chat. That alone makes me like him, but he always comes off as a sweet and decent bloke

  16. TreadStyle says:

What in the world is this photo shoot theme? Interview w a Vampire? It’s really bizarre looking. He does seem likes nice guy especially talking about falling in love, that’s really cute!

  17. Dara says:

I like her very much – although I haven’t seen much of her work. My feelings for him improved when I heard they were together.

  18. Lucy says:

I know most people usually make fun of him here, but I think he came across well in this interview. There’s really nothing negative that I can point out about him, and the bit about Rose was sweet. But seriously, watch some flicks, Kit!
