Gina Rodriquez gave her Golden Globes gown to a teen to wear to prom

Who wants just a good, old fashioned feel good story? Well, I won the lottery for feel goods today so here you go. Back in January, Gina Rodriguez looked amazing (again) at the Golden Globes (photo posted below). Jessica Casanova from New York thought so too and took to Twitter to let Gina know:

Instead of just sending back a smiling emoji, Gina kicked into Awesome Mode and sent this response to Jessica:

After a back and forth, Gina sent Jessica her 2015 Bagdley Mishka gown and a video telling her to have the time of her life.

As we reported back in January, a high schooler named Jessica Casanova tweeted at the Jane the Virgin actress complimenting her Zac Posen Golden Globes dress and saying she would love to wear it to her own prom. Rodriguez promptly replied, saying that while the Posen gown didnā€™t belong to her, she did still own the black strapless dress she wore to last yearā€™s ceremony in which she won the award for Best Actress and would be happy to donate it to the teen for her big night.

And Rodriguez took her fairy godmother duties seriously, because she made Casanovaā€™s dreams come true, making good on her promise of prom night perfection. And better yet, the teen even got a special video message from the actress who, according to ET, told her, ā€œJust know I love you. Iā€™m so proud of you. Iā€™m so excited for you. You look beautiful and everybody will remember it ā€” especially you!ā€

I am not a big proponent of fans asking celebrities to prom/balls but I think loaning red carpet outfits would be a great alternative. I realize that any celebration can be very hard on clothing so there is a concern for getting the item back in decent condition. I have no idea how you would vet the recipient. Apparently, others loved the idea of borrowing Ginaā€™s dress too so they started an idea of ā€œSisterhood of the Traveling Gina Golden Globes Dress.ā€ Gina loves the idea too. There is no mention of who gets the gown next but it would make a wonderful travel diary; each recipient takes a picture in the gown and posts it to, say, a dedicated Facebook page. We could see how each one interpreted the look, where the gown went, stories from the events.

As we mentioned before, Gina co-founded of the Naja by Catalina Girard lingerie line who recently came out with nude underwear in every skin shade to support diversity. I wonder if she included some nice foundation pieces when she sent Jessica the dress. Bottom line (non-intended pun) Gina just keeps rising in my estimation.

Gina has a lot of dresses I would like to borrow

      HONK FOR GINA
She seems like she has her head screwed on straight, and like she’d bring both red and white to a girls night in. My kinda gal.

I remember seeing this twitter exchange and being so impressed. Also the girl later suggested that this specific dress go to someone else next…kind of like a pay if forward. So wonderful of gina

Me, too. I only just started watching Jane the Virgin after I found out she was dating Ben Schwartz. Love him, and I’ve only heard good things about her and the show. You guys were right — the show and the cast are adorable. I’ve been binging on it for the last week.

The fact that she even responded and THEN followed up with action! The more I read about and see of Gina the more I love her. She radiates positivity and I think she’s very genuine.

I was shocked at how much I loved Jane The Virgin, I need Netflix to get Season 2 with the quickness!! I binged Season 1, assuming it would be there.

Gina is fantastic, what a great idea for use of the gowns. Some celeb should jump on this, and make it a thing. Donate your dresses to high schools.

  13. Green Is Good says:

What a lovely woman, to do such s nice thing.

  14. Alarmjaguar says:

Just to give Gina a shout-out, she’s producing (and possibly starring in) a new web-series that looks great. It is called Gente-fication

I guess I’m the only one who sees this as a blatant PR grab. Oh well, even if it was, the prom attendee seems to have had the night of her life, which is what really matters.

On a similar note, I would like to borrow the red dress she’s wearing in the second pic from the bottom…that belongs in my closet. Anyone have an ID on that? I’ve been out of the game too long and really miss RCFA at times like this.

    • Marianne says:

Whether or not it was for PR, it was still incredibly nice and something she didn’t have to do.

    • amilu says:

I googled it for you — the red dress is by Haney. $2,135 (on sale for $1,495) Haney Red Off-the-Shoulder Ruched Stretch Crepe Dress. You can find it on net-a-porter.

That’s awesome. The ripple effect of kindness is immeasurable.
