Kate Moss: ‘I think I’m normal, I don’t know why everyone makes out I’m mental’

moss edit

Kate Moss has something specific to promote. She’s collaborated with the French label Equipement for a line of ready-to-wear clothes. She launched the collaboration earlier this week in London, and now she’s on the cover of the new issue of The Edit. It’s not just an editorial either – this is a real, honest to God INTERVIEW. Kate Moss rarely gives interviews. When she does speak, she usually says that she learned how to keep quiet from her ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp, who told her “never complain, never explain.” I would assume that The Edit had this piece written up more than a week ago, because they literally mention Depp in the first few words of the piece, even though Moss doesn’t reference him at all in her interview. You can read the full Edit piece here, and here are some highlights (she’s pretty chatty!).

On her daywear: “I can’t be bothered to get a look together. But at night, I love dressing up. I go all out.”

She stores her “vast archive of iconic pieces” off-the-grid. “I’ve got a special, secret place… I’m not telling or somebody will burgle me. I learned the Rolling Stones have an archive and nobody knows where it is, even their children!” Is it like a hangar of clothes? “No hangar,” she scoffs. “I’ve lost a lot of stuff over the years, but I’ve still got some.” And what will she do with it all? “I’ll save it for my daughter. I bought her an Ossie Clark dress, you know the one that Twiggy wore in that Richard Avedon [shoot], that white chiffon with leaves on? She doesn’t like
anything at the moment. Fingers crossed [she will].”

She goes to her country home in the Cotswolds every weekend: “It’s just heaven, being able to walk around and have space, without people being there”

Her 20-year-old goddaughter Ella Richards: “Aw, I love her. Now she comes to my parties, and her parents don’t. She stays at my house, and they go, what’s she doing? And I’m like, she’s fine. It’s so much fun! She says, ‘I’ve got nothing to wear.’ And I’m like, ‘Here, darling!’ She’s the same shoe size, it’s perfect! I’m watching, though. I’m like Mama Kate, I have so many godchildren. I’m really strict, but I think they quite like it. [Lila] says that I’m stricter than other parents.”

Does she nag her daughter or her godchildren? “No, I don’t, because she knows, she does it on her own. No, I’ll go like this” – she lifts her sunglasses and fixes me with a stare – “and I don’t have to say anything. You’ve got to get a look down. Girls, you have to scare them, otherwise they will take over.”

She just loves kids: “Adults can be so boring.”

She’s normal: “I think I’m normal. I don’t know why everyone makes out I’m mental.”

She requested McDonalds at The Edit shoot: “Cheeseburger and fries. I can’t do lentils at work.”

Taking a part in the Absolutely Fabulous movie: “I just like comedy; I like taking the p*** out of myself. I’m comfortable with that. I wouldn’t feel comfortable being serious… It was just amazing to be in a room with [the characters] Eddie and Patsy and Saffy and Bubbles; it was like a dream. It was 10.30 in the morning and Eddie was opening bottles of champagne for me, real bottles. They were like, ‘We usually use ginger ale, but for you we got real Bolly!’”

On David Bowie’s death: “It was such a shock. I can’t believe it really. I hadn’t seen him for a while, but he always sends me a message on my birthday, well, he has done for the last few years.”

What Bowie was like as a friend: “I knew he would always have my back. Like Lee [Alexander] McQueen. There are people who believe in you, that don’t give a s*** what people say. And [Bowie] was one of them. He would read [or] he heard stuff, and he would check in, ‘Are you alright?’ When Bowie [sticks up for you], you feel better: ‘It’s fine, Bowie loves me, I don’t care what others think.’”

[From The Edit]

I don’t know, when Kate Moss says that she eats cheeseburgers for lunch during a shoot, I sort of believe her. I believe that she was drinking champagne with Jennifer Saunders at 10:30 am as they filmed AbFab. I believe that she thinks she’s a good mama-Kate, although her godchildren probably know that if they stay over at Kate’s house, they’re going to get whiskey for breakfast.

As for the vast collection of stored clothes… sigh. There are certain fashion people whose archives I would love to go through. Kate is one of them. Naomi Campbell is another. And Andre Leon Talley, who apparently does have an actual airplane hangar full of archives. But Kate’s is probably the best? Maybe.

I would love to see this secret place.

  2. Eleonor says:

I would kill to make a trip in her fashion archive.

  3. Helen says:

What would be lovely would be if this thread could happen without anyone saying “she looks terrible, it’s because she drinks and smokes, ugh, she should keep her mouth shut.” Just because it would be such a nice change 😍

    • TG says:

      I think she looks beautiful.

    • Eleonor says:

We are too used to the L.A. plastic faces, to appreciate a woman who let herself age in the natural way.
People are mad at Brigitte Bardot because she has let herself age, but I’ll take her anyday.

    • Boo says:

NO. No it wouldn’t be lovely because it would mean we lived in a make-believe land without opinions and with no free will. People don’t have to look up to others just because others find them attractive. Grow the hell up.

  4. Nev says:

    Awesome.

  5. Erinn says:

I just find animal print soooo tacky looking.

Beyond that – I have very little knowledge of this woman outside of her being THE model for quite some time. But even crazy people don’t think they’re crazy, so I mean, her comment doesn’t really help haha.

  6. Jayna says:

All those little remembrances of Bowie made me tear up. I’m still so sad about his passing.

  7. What is it with normal schtick for famous and wealthy people these days? No, she is not normal, she is a fashion icon. Graceful and Confident, with her fair share of controversies. I like her massively. No one can ever replace her in fashion department. Today’s ” models” like kendull , gigi blah blah are like plastic bots, totally forgettable.
I think she is mental in a weirdly cool way!

  8. Size Does Matter says:

I want to look like that in a hat. I try and it looks like I’m playing dress-up. And oh the different ways to take the quotes given recent news “never complain, never explain.” Was he talking about her referencing him and their relationship?

  9. Name says:

Because Pete Freakin Dougherty you drunk cow. Jesus she is stupid.

  10. Ann says:

Love her – she never gives beauty or diet tips!

  11. Hejhej says:

I really like her. Lovely with an actual interview too.

  12. Narak says:

This was the perfect way to wake up. I love her.

  13. Lucy says:

She seems lovely! I like that she rarely gives interviews, but I also enjoy reading her.

  14. Dubois says:

I really like her, but she sounds a bit shallow here. Like there’s not much to her life except clothes, parties and preparing her kid and god kids for more clothes and parties. That and being insulated from people saying bad things about her.

    • TAXX says:

She’s been a supermodel since she was 14. And I dont think she’s been around any influences who would push her towards education. So her intellectual development is probably not really strong. And intellectual development is not at all encouraged in the fashion world.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

Mossy doesn’t need to apologize for who she ain’t. No pretense of reading scientific journals in her spare time. No desperate need to speak out on behalf of global what-what. She works hard, plays hard and is amazing just being herself.

  15. KiddVicious says:

If they ever remake The Graduate she should be Mrs. Robinson. She has that 1970’s divorcee’ look about her.

I like her, she’s had a very interesting life. And I’d like to know how she’s “lost” a lot of her clothing.

  16. guesto says:

Rock on, Ms Moss. She is, and always has been, beautifully, deliciously and uniquely herself and, in a world that I think has totally lost touch with what that actually means and looks like, she continues, along with my Tilda, my Emma, my Erin and my Annie, to be one of my shining no-f*cks-to-give lights. 🙂

  17. Sara says:

She looks horrible and so does johnny they so belong together! Johnny and Kate are both single so they need to get together and go to rehab!

  18. Clairej says:

    She is incredible

  19. raincoaster says:

The Kardashian Kontouring isn’t doing her any favours.
