Why didn’t Prince Harry or William ‘cover’ for the ailing Prince Philip last week?

Prince Philip had to cancel an appearance in Scotland last week. The appearance was for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, the biggest naval confrontation of World War I. Philip served in the British Navy, and he’s always been at home around military personnel. His absence wasn’t out of disrespect, but out of health concerns and literally his doctor’s orders. Philip was not believed to be well enough to make the trip. He turns 95 years old next week and while his health has been poor for a good five years now, he still manages to out-work nearly every other royal family member, including all of the under-40 royals combined. So a Daily Mail columnist did have to wonder… why didn’t Prince William or Prince Harry go in their grandfather’s place?

Given his assiduous dedication to duty, no one would have been more disappointed than Prince Philip on learning he was not well enough to attend the commemoration for those who fought at Jutland, the greatest naval confrontation of World War I. A decorated naval officer himself, he above all would have appreciated the importance of the ceremony on Tuesday for the 6,000 British sailors and marines who lost their lives 100 years ago in the most appalling circumstances.

Sadly, we must all accept that Philip, at nearly 95, can no longer be relied on to conduct his duties as he did when he was young. Which makes it all the more surprising that neither Prince William nor Prince Harry immediately stepped up to take their grandfather’s place for the day.
It fell instead to that paragon of royal duty Princess Anne to appear on Philip’s behalf. But with respect to the Princess Royal, she has never served in the Forces (although she has a number of honorary military titles), while both William and Harry have been through Sandhurst and were commissioned as officers.

What a fitting tribute it would have been to the veterans’ families for either of the princes — or even both — to attend in their military uniforms. But no, that would have interfered with their own plans. The Palace says William and Harry’s schedules were ‘private’ on the 31st when the service took place at St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, adding helpfully that they were ‘working’ over the weekend at a charity polo match. Perhaps the poor boys were too exhausted knocking a ball around with a bunch of privileged, social-climbing multi-millionaires to consider upsetting their schedules to commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In fact, it turns out that William, Kate and their adorable children, George and Charlotte, were attending the Norfolk Horse Trials on Tuesday, at a stately pile near their home — and we were treated to happy family snaps to prove it. All very lovely. But a far cry from the small and bleak cemetery in Orkney where the heroes of Jutland were remembered.

Increasingly, with both princes, there’s a feeling they are far more interested in the perks of their ‘jobs’ and not the hard toil of being an active royal. After all, William thought nothing of charging us for a helicopter flight to take him and Kate home from the Buckingham Palace Garden Party last week. How difficult would it have been for him to fly to Scotland?

[From The Daily Mail]

It’s true, on the same day of the Jutland memorial event, William and Kate were getting pap’d at a low-key equestrian event close to their home. William wasn’t even “working” at the EAAA on that day! And God knows what Harry was up to. While I bet the Princess Royal was happy to appear on behalf of her father, the problem is still the same: William, Kate and Harry are the ones who could and should bring the most attention to charities and important events. While Hary is truly forging his own path, Will and Kate don’t have any excuses.

PS… Here are some photos of Harry last week honoring WWII veterans of Normandy on Thursday, June 2. Harry was told off by one of the veterans because he wasn’t wearing a tie.

Is anyone really surprised by this bit of news? I’d be more shocked if Willy actually cancelled his plans and showed up.

    • Senaber says:

See this is what is wrong with Willnot’s strategy. He could have gone to this, via helicopter, for a few hours, then lived off the goodwill for this trip for at least a month.

      • Birdix says:

And it sounds like it would have been an interesting and poignant event. Why not go?

      • Megan says:

Anne was scheduled to accompany Phillip. She did not step in at the last minute. Also, since Andrew is retired Navy, it seems like he would have been the more appropriate choice to replace Phillip.

      • LAK says:

Megan: Andrew was in Estonia and Charles in Romania. Both undertaking Royal engagements. Listed in CC.

William and Harry were the next available set of Royals if anyone was going to step in for Philip.

  2. Alix says:

Hate to harsh on Gingersnap, but he or his brother should’ve stepped up.

Kinda surprises me that Harry doesn’t travel with a spare tie, just in case…

    • abby says:

Nobody had to step up as Anne was always going to be there with her father and husband who both served in the Navy. Why send another royal to cover the event when one is already there? That would make no sense.

      • notasugarhere says:

+1 Abby. In this case, the DM is trying to do a repeat of the Irish Guards story, only throwing an un-deserving Harry under the bus along with W&K.

      • Amber says:

Yeah, I actually think this is a nonstory for exactly the reasons you mentioned, @Abby. It’s also very convenient that it’s an easily defended “softball” of pointless criticism (bonus for them) AND also a perfect distraction from whatever was going on with William at the time, (BIG bonus for Willy). So instead, we’re not expressly going after William (for much of anything really) and how exactly he managed to get from one place to the other. Or that he wasn’t working a EAAA shift. Or how ’bout connecting those dots on William and Kate more often employing a helicopter for personal use and to run back to Amner instead of using it for real royal “work”. Like IDK, attending to the Irish Guard one day and then getting to a different engagement the next. They could’ve even mentioned how Kate’s upcoming events start on June 9th. But she has otherwise done nothing since May 24th. And that was 40-50 minutes at the Garden Party, the Chelsea Flower Show, a day with Ben Ainslie, etc., Otherwise she was just sending letters left and right to her actual patronages. And that next “flurry” of upcoming engagements? A SportsAid dinner and then BRF stuff. Sitting. Standing. Waving. Balconies. Nothing. What do the DoLittles do?

But where was Harry? Don’t know. Maybe volunteering? He may have been working on the concert for Sentebale? He might have been sitting on his butt eating bon bons. I don’t know. The point is it’s not that difficult to imagine Harry doing something. He at least had other engagements later in the week.

      • Zimmerman says:

@Notasugarhere It also seems someone has it out for Harry. We all know he does care and does far more work than William. Someone’s on a mission to lump them together when there’s no reason too, other than make William seem like he’s no different than any of the other ‘non-working younger royals.’ Not buying the assult on Harry. William is in line for the throne and should have taken this on.

  3. “social climbing multi millionaire’s”….LOL
Daily mail isn’t being their sugary self anymore. They are asking questions!

I think IUCN should put british monarchy in their Red data book as endangered mammal species.

  4. Tia says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they wouldn’t let Harry go because it would draw too much attention to Will and Kate not being there. Alternatively, I’d be interested to know what Harry was doing (probably not on a jolly at a horse show).

    • Nic919 says:

Harry at least attended another event that week after the polo match on the weekend. What did Will do?

  5. Sixer says:

When I am Glorious Overlord, I won’t even let them near my chariot. Unless it’s to lick mud off the wheels. They’d have to hitch hike to Scotland. For the plebs, I will be a benevolent dictator.

  6. abby says:

You are wrong. Anne was not stepping in for her father but was always scheduled to attend the event with her husband and her father. It was simply not necessary to send an additional royal to Scotland as Princess Anne was already scheduled to be there anyways. I’m all in favour for holding the younger royals to account, but this time criticism is far stretched. This was a good and balanced decision by the palace.

    • GiGi says:

This. There’s plenty to actually be critical of that this sort of heaping on actually takes away from the real issues. So, yes, criticize them for their actual faults – they’re plenty enough you shouldn’t need to create false outrage stories.

    • Tourmaline says:

Agree, I don’t think Princess Anne who is a formidable person would have looked kindly on Will or Harry suddenly being foisted into the event that she was long planning on attending.

  7. kat says:

Well, I gather William is kept very busy round the house.

  8. Rapunzel says:

    Thoughts:

    1. Will and Kate’s schedules should be so busy that they are not available for filling in.

    2. But if Anne was scheduled, no need for another person. She’s probably happier not having to hang around the Cambridges.

    3. Harry needs to separate himself from his bro/sis-in-law. #freeHarry

    4. I do not envy #poorJason’s job.

    5. Who wants to bet we’ll see George/Charlotte at Trooping the Color to distract from this?

  9. Melly says:

I love Harry and I think he does wonderful work for his charities, but he should have worn a tie to the veterans event.

    • Christin says:

I agree. Business casual is not the best idea when honoring a group in the 70-up age range. All the vets are dressed with ties, and it makes Harry’s open collar show up even more.

However, at least he showed up and appeared engaged.

  10. The Original Mia says:

Harry was told by his staff a tie wasn’t needed, so he didn’t wear one. Seems there was a bit of confusion about the dress code as other veterans were their sans tie.

William is so pathetic they don’t even bother to ask him to do stuff. Anne didn’t need him there so it actually was fine in this case. I doubt William would have gone even if asked. He had staged family photos and polo to do.

  11. Rebecca/Becky says:

While I agree with the criticism, the same could be said for the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York if they were available.

Edit: looks like they were unavailable

As has already been pointed out Princess Anne was already scheduled to attend

  12. TeamAwesome says:

    #freeHarry indeed.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it on a bleary eyed Monday morning, but this just smells misogynistic to me. What, Anne can’t handle this on her own? The second most capable woman in the Royal family, after her mother? No, she wasn’t in the Navy, but that doesn’t make her less able to honor the service and sacrifice of others.

  13. Pants says:

I don’t think it’s fair for Harry to get grief for this considering he works more that Will and Kate combined. Let them get off their lazy butts for once.

  14. ABC says:

It’s neither here nor there to me whether they attended or not, I’m just here to say they missed out – St Magnus Cathedral is a stunningly beautiful, peaceful and spiritual building with some amazing stained glass windows and some of the friendliest volunteers I’ve met. I’m sure Anne had an amazing visit, respected the people and the occasion and did the BRF proud. But even Anne is ‘getting on a bit’ and I do wonder what more is required to entice the younger set to put duty before pleasure. They get the best of everything, free travel to some wonderful places, don’t have to wait in line and just have to smile a bit and say a few words to ‘earn’ their enormous privilege. What more do they need before they will finally start doing some real work?

  15. Stuffapea says:

If I recall correctly, Charles served his military stint in the Royal Navy and thus, would have been the logical choice to replace his father. Why no backlash against him?

  16. Cerys says:

Can’t say I’m surprised at William not stepping up and offering to go. Even if he had been asked I’m sure he would be too busy with
private /family events. Harry had been visiting veterans and does seem to be taking on more duties so I could excuse him. Anne did a better job than Moany Willie would have done anyway.
Loved the old soldiers telling off Harry for not wearing a tie. He took it well.

  17. Starlight says:

Let’s face it the Daiky Mail knows these two are very slow or reluctant to step up to the a rapper and increase their work schedule Infact only a few months ago the Prnces Trust hinted a new head would have to be found in the future as replacement to Charles but this has all gone very quiet. I think the DMis waiting for some backbone for the future.
