Jeff Bridges: ‘I’m a Hillary supporter and I don’t go the Trump way’

Jeff Bridges is an embarrassment of riches, when you think about it. He’s always been handsome, and he’s aging beautifully and naturally. He seems to treat everyone with respect and love. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. He does so much for charity, especially his work with No Kid Hungry. He’s also responsible for creating some amazingly iconic film characters. And after all of these years, he doesn’t mind talking about those characters even if he’s supposed to be promoting one of his new movies. Bridges has a new interview in The Daily Beast to promote his new film, Hell or High Water, but he spends most of the interview talking about The Dude from The Big Lebowski. And he talks about politics! And how women are amazing. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

Does Jeff Bridges abide Donald Trump? “For my money, it’s really shocking and like being splashed with cold water to see what America is really like. As an actor, I like playing the underbelly of our society and seeing our darker sides. We have a lot of fear in this country, and fear can motivate us to do some frightening things—as it’s done in other countries as well. I don’t dig Trump or follow what he has to say, but I find it fascinating that he’s surfaced in the political arena. But I’m a Hillary supporter and I don’t go the Trump way.”

He loves The Big Lebowski as much as you love it: “That’s one of my favorite movies I’ve ever been involved in, and that’s due to the Coen Brothers. They’re masters. They know how to make a movie so well, and do it apparently effortlessly—but I know that’s not the case. They put a lot of effort into it.”

Jeff Bridges wears jellies, just like The Dude: “I use elements of myself—I see my parallels with a character—and find similar things in my own personality. As far as The Dude goes, I had a lot in common with The Dude in my younger years. A lot of the clothes he wears are mine—the jelly sandals, the T-shirts, and so forth, and you mentioned “abiding,” and I share that with The Dude. I do my best to abide with whatever is going down, and I’m sort of Buddhistly bent myself. My dear friend Bernie Glassman, who’s a Zen master, he came to me one day and said that, in some circles, The Dude is considered a Zen master…”

How he feels about Hillary Clinton considering he has three daughters: “I think it’s wonderful that that’s going down. Culturally, we can benefit by bringing women into the mix. We’ve had this patriarchal thing going on for long enough. Women are so, maybe this is just a male perspective, but for my money, they’re so connected to life in a way that men aren’t. They’re able to give birth, have children, and it’s literally a part of them. They perhaps have a stronger capacity for caring than males. I know that in the Native American societies, women were really in charge: the women chose the chiefs. It’s taken us a long time to come around and see the light on that score. I think it’s a wonderful thing.”

[From The Daily Beast]

If this was someone else, I might mutter something about “hippie nonsense,” but since it’s Jeff Bridges, I’m on board. A think some men – mostly men who have close relationships with their mothers, sisters, daughters and/or wives – think like this. They think womanhood is an automatic connection to the earth and cosmos, that women are just more centered and peaceful than men. Do women have a stronger capacity for caring than men? If we do, is it nature or nurture? I have no idea. But I do like that Jeff isn’t a Bernie Bro! Thank God.

I love him. Fabulous Baker Boys is one of my favorites. I crashed into him in a restaurant a few years ago (I wasn’t watching where I was going and he stood up right in front of me) and he was charming and delightful

So jealous!!!!! Would love to bump into Jeff, he’s the senior cuteness!

So funny! Glad to hear he’s a delight!

I sat next to his mother-in-law on a flight (so random) and she was just gushing about what a good human being he is. She even got out family photos from her purse!

  3. Nev says:

    Hotness.

  4. Tiffany says:

I watched his episode of American Experience a couple of years back and I walked away with a new appreciation for him. He really did not sugar coat his dark times and fidelity and how he got to the place he is now. He did not try to rewrite history and it was nice to see.

Love him! I’ve worked with End Hunger /No Kid Hungry and it is legit.

Side note: that pic in the grey suit is giving me all kinds of creeps. It looks like a child’s hand is in his right pants pocket. Look closely, but be warned….

His wife and daughters are very lucky women. I’ve loved Jeff since I saw him in Starman, or was it Sea Hunt with his Dad? (God, I’m getting old!)
He seems like a very down to earth, giving person. Gorgeous, too.

    • Esmom says:

For me it was Against All Odds. Swoon.

      Love him.

      • Tourmaline says:

Ooh yeah Against All Odds! He was freakishly gorgeous in that.

      • whyme says:

I forgot about Against All Odds. My first rated R movie. My older sister took me. I was 11. Dang what was she thinking?!? But man he was the ultimate hotness in that movie.

      • Skyblue says:

        Against All Odds-those long legs-sigh

    • Bella bella says:

Loved him in Starman. He was brilliant in that movie.

@Lisa, who wrote: “I’ve loved Jeff since I saw him in Starman, or was it Sea Hunt with his Dad? (God, I’m getting old!)”

I’m came here to say I think Jeff Bridges was robbed of an Oscar for “Starman.” I’m sure I saw him in other early films (and perhaps, too, on “Sea Hunt” with his Dad), but I absolutely loved him in “The Last Picture Show” (1971).

  7. doofus says:

friend of mine used to bartend in CA and met him the night he won his Oscar. said he was the NICEST guy and let everyone take picture with him, with him and the Oscar, and with JUST the Oscar.

  8. whyme says:

Love him. He’s an amazing actor. Especially in the movie Vanished with Kiefer Sutherland. He actually made me repulsed by him. And that’s a hard thing to do cause the man is hot!!!

My first movie with him was when I went to see Tron and as a little kid I remember him being so good looking. (The new Tron movie was disappointing.)

  9. whyme says:

It’s also nice to see an older actor married to a woman that is his contemporary. They both have age spots on their hands. I find that oddly comforting.

    • SusanneToo says:

They met around 74/75 when he was making Rancho Deluxe(in Montana iirc). Think she was a waitress. 40 years-that’s something of a record in his business. He caught my eye in Last Picture Show.

  10. aims says:

He’s lovely. I’ve seen his interviews and the way he talks about his wife makes my heart melt. There was a story a few years ago, when he won his Oscar. He would go into the kitchens of these galas and make arrangements with them to give the left over food to food banks and shelters. That made me a forever fan of his. He grew up privileged but he still has compassion for others.

    • Esmom says:

That’s so awesome. I wish I had the initiative to be able to do that. The more I hear from him, the more I love him.

    • SusanneToo says:

I’d always heard that his parents were lovely people who raised their kids right. Not at all “Hollywood”.

  11. Sam says:

He’s awesome. I remember when he won his Oscar and was doing interviews and somebody asked him about his dad, who had passed away. And he got genuinely emotional and said he dedicated his win to his father, who always encouraged him to pursue acting and whatever else he wanted. And it was so sweet and genuine and cool to see – a real change from the canned Oscar speeches – absolutely no pretentions.

  12. Catelina says:

I had such a thing for him in Jagged Edge. Really a cool guy.

  13. annaloo. says:

I love it when couples look like a matching set…especially when they’ve been together so long 🙂

  14. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

    Well hot damn.

I admit I didn’t know a lot about the man before but I am now firmly on the Jeff Bridges train. What an intelligent empathetic interview.

Wow…I’ve been missing out on his amazingness all this time???

  15. nicegirl says:

    Yay!! Love you, Jeff Bridges.

  16. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I love his character’s speech at the end of “The Contender,” where the President defends his female pick as V.P. I know Bridges didn’t write the speech, but he does a great job delivering it.

  17. lucy2 says:

Such a talented guy, and he’s so interesting to listen to when he does longer interviews.

  18. dj says:

I have loved Jeff Bridges and his brilliant acting forever (“Sea Hunt”?). Years ago we watched a Mother’s Day Special and his family was on it. He has a very tight-knit family from all their stories. All his siblings (5 total, I think) and mom talked about how each child got a their own special playtime with mom and mom would do whatever activity the child wanted…just one-on-one. You could see the love shining in each of their eyes as they told how mom would crawl into a teepee and play Cowboys & Indians (that is what it was called back then) or pretend to shoot at each of them or play tea party or whatever. OMG I wanted his mom to be my mom so badly after watching that special! His dad was on it too. The kids that were actors were also laughing about Lloyd being completely into nepotism. The boys would talk about a new movie role and he would say “is there a part for your brother or me in it?” It was so hilarious. They all had a huge sense of humor about themselves and awareness. Also, Beau Bridges was filming a TV movie that LLoyd had a part in…dad said I don’t want to have the damn fish tank behind me in this scene. Beau Bridges said “Fish made you a star old man!” Best line ever!
