FKA Twigs refuses to use the word ‘fan,’ thinks the word is ‘derogative’

FKA Twigs surprises me a little bit. I’ve been reading and covering her magazine interviews for several years now, and I think I can safely say that she does not enjoy being interviewed. She doesn’t enjoy the process of sitting down with a person and trying to discuss her music, or how she feels about dancing, and she especially does not enjoy talking about her private life. So it surprises me that not only does she continue to give magazine interviews, she seems to keep getting bigger and higher-profile magazine covers. She was just on the cover of Allure’s May issue, and now here she is on the cover of Elle’s August issue. Elle calls her “The New Prince” which… no, not really. While Prince & Twigs met before his death and he reportedly liked her and her music a great deal, no one should call Twigs “the New Prince.” I doubt she even wants to be called that.

The Elle photoshoot is interesting (you can see the whole shoot here), but I’m not sure about the nose bridge ring. I tried to look that up to see if it’s called anything else besides “nose bridge ring” and I think that’s what we’re calling it. Is this the new trend? I hope not. Elle released a few quotes from their cover story too:

Why she puts her work into the world without warning and won’t discuss any project until it’s completely finished: “People talk too much. Everyone’s always chatting and not delivering. I’m the opposite. I like to just deliver.”

Why she refuses to use the word “fan”: To her, it feels “derogative,” so she opts instead to call them “people who like my music” or “people interested in me as an artist… They don’t influence what I make. But they have a role in us all coming together and creating something genuine.”

On being in the public eye: “Being in the public eye is so weird. People want to shame you. It’s not a celebration of a talent.” She speaks wistfully about an era before social media, when Josephine Baker could dance on tables all night, then “go out for vegetables in her T-shirt” the next day and not have it all documented.

[From Elle]

I suspect that Twigs probably would be able to go out for vegetables the next day without being photographed, if only she wasn’t engaged to an actor who became very famous for playing a sparkly vampire. The interest isn’t in Twigs’ career or music as much as her romantic life. That being said, she does a good job of staying undercover. There aren’t many candid photos of her these days, which is probably by her design. As for what she says about not calling her fans “fans,” I don’t understand the big deal about those semantics. Twigs has FANS and that’s not a derogative statement.

She’s getting more pretentious by the minute. Her music is not my thing, so maybe that’s why I don’t get her.
Very pretty though. I like the nose bridge piercing better than the septum ring.

  2. ###stainless says:

The nose bridge thing isn’t bad but the earring loks too long, like her ear is gonna tear or something…….I’ve seen lots of ladies with torn ears and it’s kinda gross. She looks great though

  3. Luca76 says:

Maybe she’s trying to differentiate her actual fans from the crazies that are only interested in her because of who she’s dating?

    • Anname says:

Can you imagine if Rob and twigs were like Hiddleswift? 😂 They try to keep it low key and very rarely speak about each other at least. That relationship has brought her to a greater audience, but it’s also brought her a lot of grief. The awful comments on her Instagram and stuff like that have caused her to pull back on how she interacts with her fans (if I can use the word fan, lol?). I would imagine she is still trying to figure out how to balance her sensibilities with having a viable career, because there definitely seems to be some disconnect there.

  4. FingerBinger says:

Fan is short for fanatic. Calling those that like her music fanatics is a derogatory name to her.

  5. M.A.F. says:

There is no such thing as the “new *insert singer*”. There was only one Prince. Period.

    eyeroll

I think the notion of ‘fans’ has become derogative, she’s right. Perhaps before it was different but nowadays look at how fans act and are treated by their ‘idols’. If the artist is attacked, the fandom goes on vicious retaliation. Artists themselves use their fans in the most humiliating ways possible (look at Bieber).
I don’t think there’s much respect anymore for the notion of fans. Artists just use and abuse them.

    What a try hard.

  9. Trixie says:

To me she just sounds like a pretentious a-hole. If she doesn’t want to be too famous and just wants to focus on her music and art, why is she promoting herself by posing for big magazine covers and giving interviews? She could easily be all about the music and art and be under the radar and never pose for magazines or give interviews. There are many other artists who do that. She’s trying to be so counter-culture while still playing into the big celebrity machine.

    • Hannah says:

Pretensious? I don’t agree but ok u can see how some think so But asshole? Where are you getting that from? Is she rude or mean? Seems like you just don’t like her, it doesn’t make her an asshole.

      • Starkiller says:

Her fiancé is rude and mean as hell. Water usually seeks its own level. It’s not unreasonable to imagine she might be rude and mean to some degree as well.

    • JenniferJustice says:

Her pretention and faux hate of the game while playing parts of the game that aren’t even necessary sounds just like Kristen Stewart. Now I finally understand the attraction Robb has for Twigs – because he obviously likes pretentious young women who pretend to resent the spotlight. She may not look like KStew, but I see a similar personality.

Pretentious people are usually some degree of a$$hole. To say someone is a nice pretentious person is a bit of an oxymoron.

  10. Tiffany says:

I can see a little bit where she is coming from. Fan is short for fanatic and in a Tumblr, Instagram world……I can see what she means.

    • Dana m says:

Prince was interviewed once saying the same thing. Fan is short for fanatic and he would rather not use the term “fan”.

  11. ###stainless says:

Are u sure she’s even got fans or just saying this sh*t to justify herself

  12. Hannah says:

    Slay Queen! She looks amazing.

  13. Gabriella says:

I really want to like her, but I can’t. I dislike her music and her persona, even though I find her visually interesting.

  14. La Ti Da says:

Am I the only person taken aback that she has an pierced angry red vagina hanging from her ear?

    • Hannah says:

I love her but thanks for the laugh! 😂 Someone should start a band called angry vagina,

      • outoftheshadows says:

Actually, if you look closer, the flower has a rather phallic-looking stamen which is also pierced cleverly… lots of sexual visual puns there. I actually love it. And her.

      • outoftheshadows says:

And it’s an anthurium… the flower, that is. My dad grows them.

    • AnnieRUOk says:

I love that earring. Its vulva meets phallus with a piercing. Very intentional. But it’s the kind of thing that is not realistic outside of the fashion editorial.
It’s like $700 dollars. Can’t afford that. But if H&M ripped it off, made it less ridiculous, and more cheap (quality and price 🙁 ..) id buy it!

  15. Eleonor says:

    Love the cover.
And I have a question: the open mouth-thing. Does she have a condition which does not allow her to close it ???

  16. Chinoiserie says:

Nose bridge actually looks nice on her, much better than nose ring.

  17. Kerry says:

    @kaiser

She got that out of the Prince handbook, who always used to say “fan is short for fanatic. Who wants to be called a fanatic?”

They were very close and she spent a lot of time talking music and FAMS (what they both preferred to call people who enjoyed the same music/musicianship as them).

  18. Bethany says:

Sometimes I think she looks rather sexy but most of the time she creeps me out. There is a weird vibe about her that is very off-putting. Rob certainly has strange taste in women – he likes them dark, petite, full of angst and pretentious.

  19. Darlene says:

    She’s gorgeous.

  20. what's inside says:

I think I threw up a little bit…..what is is with these people?
