Jared Leto on Kanye West: ‘I really appreciate his ability to speak his mind’

I said earlier this week that I actually enjoy Jared Leto’s style. I like his style because I like the fact that he really cares. He’s not a dandy like Eddie Redmayne, but like Redmayne, Jared loves clothes and it shows. He doesn’t think it’s wrong or weird or bad to wear cotton-candy-pink trousers with a shamrock-colored coat. And because he’s feeling himself in this outfit, it does work. These are photos of Leto at last night’s London premiere of Suicide Squad. His ensemble is Gucci, of course. He actually sourced the coat at the runway show, when he lit up like a little kid as the coat came down the runway:

That’s sort of adorable, right? Anyway, what else is Leto up to? He’s on the cover the latest issue of GQ Style, and he talks about his feelings regarding the greatest celebrity beef of our time, Kanye West versus Taylor Swift. Leto – surprisingly? – stays neutral, but offers compliments to both.

Speaking with GQ Style for their latest cover story, Jared Leto, 44, positioned himself as Switzerland in the divisive battle between Yeezy and T. Swift.

“He’s a friend and has always been. Kanye has always been the nicest person to me, kind and generous. I think he’s a talent, and I really appreciate his ability to speak his mind,” Leto, who occasionally hangs out with the West, explained to the men’s fashion mag. “I’m very different. I’m very careful and cautious because I don’t want to deal with the other things that come along with speaking out like that. But I do appreciate that in other people.”

When it comes to Ye’s enemy Swift, Leto is also a big fan: “She’s great. She triggers a conversation with myself about what’s possible. And you know, the thing I like about Taylor is she’s a self-made woman. I see that in my mother [Constance Leto]. There were probably points in Taylor’s career where someone else maybe would have been knocked off balance by criticism or other challenges, and she just kept marching forward.”

[From Us Weekly]

Leto got into some minor drama last year when a video was released of Leto listening to Swift’s music, assessing that music and then saying “F–k her. I don’t give a f–k about her.” Leto faced the wrath of the Swiftloonies, but he made amends by tweeting this, which I actually thought was kind of shady: “The truth is I think @taylorswift13 is amazing + an incredible example of what’s possible. If I hurt her or her fans my sincerest apologies.” I thought that was Leto’s nice way of calling Taylor basic, but it’s water under the bridge. So do you think Leto will be added to Taylor’s lengthy sh-t list? Or did Leto say enough to avoid controversy from both camps?

    of course he does, lmao

  2. Kate says:

I’m so baffled by him. Sometimes I think he’s amazing and then other times I can’t figure out why I ever thought that.
I think he is mad as a hatter, as many celebrities tend to be, but he’s also a creative genius, which is probably why he and Kanye get along.
I hate this outfit but it does work on him. On anyone else, this would be the very definition of ridiculous.

    • als says:

I think him and Kanye get along because he worships Kanye and has gone out of his way to draw his attention. Other than that, I haven never seen Kanye going out of his way to invite Leto to his shows, to mention him or anything like that. They did a little music collaboration a long time ago.

But Leto is definitely a fan and he is right, he definitely is the not the kind that speaks his mind, more like the political kind.
However, he would be more popular if he dared to be more upfront.
Taylor Swift is even further away from him than Kanye so I don’t think she is paying attention.

    Happening.

  4. MissMerry says:

this outfit…I want to knock it but I have a belief that men’s fashion is so boring and restricted that I can’t knock this outfit because men deserve to have fun and more options with fashion like women do.

It looks kinda silly now, but I hope that more crazy unique mens fashion starts appearing and men really feel themselves in it and rock it so we get used to seeing it and can start to appreciate it.

    you do you, crazy man.

This is the only thing I like about him now. Wearing this… I mean. It’s almost an outfit version of the 60’s Joker..

    • sanders says:

MissMerry, I feel the same way about men’s fashion. I’ve loved both his outfits that have been posted here. Finally some colour and drama in men’s clothes.

I love the pink and green combination. It reminds me of Indian saris which will mix a lot of different colours together that you rarely see in Western clothing. In a way it reminds me of the colour combinations you might find in a tropical environment.

Funny I can see the connection. They share the same try-hard-constant-neediness that annoys me to the point that I can rarely watch or listen to either of them. My default reaction to both: 🙄

  6. Megan says:

When is it ok to wear socks with Gucci loafers? Never.

  7. Naya says:

Strange man wears strange clothes. His reaction to that hideous coat is everything though.

  8. AlleyCat says:

I dont agree that Taylor is a self made millionaire. She came from a rich family, her father bought part of her record company in the beginning, her family moved her to Nashville so she could start singing. That to me is not self made. I’m not saying she didn’t have a hand in her own success, but do I think she would have made it big if she grew up poor?

    • Nina says:

self made is a silly term anyway. no person in the world is self made.

    • Ennie says:

Princess Stephany of Monaco tried to make it in the music business and only lasted 2? records. I vaguely remember a song, Hurricane or Irresistible it was the name maybe. That’s it.
It takes something else to make it and last in art (any type of art) besides having means.

  9. ElleBee says:

He borrowed that coat from Duchess Kate but it’s new because she didn’t go to the Irish Guard parade this year so she didn’t get a chance to wear it.

  10. Mia V. says:

He didn’t needed to insert himself in the conversation, but due to the bad reviews of his Joker, he probably needs to push attention away of his performance and still be on the trend issue.

  11. Nina says:

everytime there is a thread about bad encounters with celebs Leto always is featured very negatively.

  12. LinaLamont says:

    Make him go away.

  13. MickeyM says:

What I think is crazy is Jared the fashionista is also a bad ass rock climber, and loves our national parks. See these series of shorts he directed about climbing legends. Jordan Catalano is a Renaissance man!

  14. Lucy says:

He’s making it happen. The fashion show picture is hilarious.

  15. Nancy says:

Jordan Catalano is a strange one, but is a good actor. I can actually see he and Ye being buds as neither are what one would call conventional. I don’t agree about Swift tho….she is hardly self-made. Her parents played a big part in uprooting their existence in order for her to live her dream. She sings ok, writes ok, but is hardly Joni Mitchell. I don’t understand the hype about her. Maybe Kanye did play a big part in making her a topic of conversation. Certainly hope it quiets down. If she marries this Tom person, it will stop her non stop in your face romances and maybe she can just focus on music.

  16. Sparkly says:

Careful, Jared. That kind of sentiment can push a loon into politics.
