Leslie Jones’ enthusiastic tweets score her an invite to the Olympics in Rio

You probably remember that Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones quit Twitter temporarily three weeks ago after being subjected to horrific racist abuse. Twitter has typically taken a very lax approach to trolling, racism and personal attacks and Leslie highlighted that issue. After she made some of the tweets she received public, she met with the CEO of Twitter, who banned some trolls for her and promised shareholders that they would crack down on abuse. (Whether that’s happening on a wider scale or not is up to debate.)

It looks like Twitter is now a much safer place for Leslie because she’s been tweeting hilarious videos and live coverage of the Olympics, where she’s enthusiastically supporting Team USA – in full ‘merica costume and with faux Olympic medals! Leslie has a laptop computer with a splitscreen of four events running at once and her TV so she doesn’t miss anything. Here are a few of her tweets but just check out her Twitter for more because she’s following and cheering on just about every athlete.

This cracked me up! The language is NSFW:

Not only will Leslie get a swimcap from the American women’s swimming team for supporting them, including silver medal winner Maya Dirado (see tweet above), she also got an official invite from NBC to come to the Olympics in Rio! NBC Olympics’ executive producer, Jim Bell, tweeted Leslie an invitation.

It’s unclear if Leslie is actually being invited to cover the Olympics, but she sounds like she’s up for it as long as the offer is serious.

As of press time, Leslie was unsure as to whether she would actually go:

Of course everyone is telling her to:

NBC should bring Leslie to Rio and put her on the air as soon as possible. We have a little less than two weeks left and NBC needs Leslie! I’m so glad she came back to Twitter. I’m overseas now watching German coverage of the Olympics and I needed this dose of patriotism. Go to Rio Leslie!

This woman is a treasure! Love her!

  2. turtle says:

    I really dislike this woman.
I don’t care what anyone says.
I feel like she’s a puppet to make black women look ridiculous.

    • Blaire Carter says:

Exactly how I feel about her car commercial and Ghost Busters! I thought I was the only one…

    • I Choose Me says:

How so? I mean I get not liking her personality but wha? I’m a black woman and I don’t think she’s trying to do anything but just be herself.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

How is she a puppet? And how the hell do you get to call her ridiculous? You don’t have to like her but I would really love to know what about her is ridiculous and how it affects other black women. I’m assuming you are one. So why does she have to fit your criteria of how you would like black women to behave?

    • embertine says:

Funny how no-one ever says that Taylor Swift and her Mean Girlsâ„¢ shenanigans make white women look ridiculous. It’s almost as though white people are treated as individuals and black people are treated as tokenised stereotypes.

    • Ciru says:

What upsets me is that we black women are not allowed to be goofy or slapstick. Anything less than pristine, “ladylike” behavior apparently brings black womanhood into disrepute. Why?

    • razqy says:

Black women are not cut from the same piece. They are a rainbow of souls, spirits and shades. Maybe your comment came from a good place but i felt sad for such comment. There are certain humans who are build up with great enthusiasm for life, Positivity and natural love that the majority of society find weird or fake.

      Please believe in free souls.

Sorry English is not my first language. Peace

      • mp says:

It’s like she HAS to represent all black women??? Can she just be “Leslie Jones awesome & goofy person”
She’s a national treasure, you should cherish her!

      • ladysussex says:

razqy I love your comment and you communicated it beautifully! I’m a teacher and I’ve had the privilege of having a few students throughout the years who have THIS kind of enthusiasm for life and I really treasured those students! They are such a gift to the world. I find it so strange when people are offended by that kind of enthusiasm.

    • Nicole says:

Cmon this is the same dumb logic that people use to paint all black people with the same bad brush.
One black person does something wrong= we are all thugs and welfare queens
Muslim extremist commits a crime= 1 billion muslims must all be terrorist
White male after white male commits a mass murder= lone wolf don’t blame all white people. #notallwhitepeople

    • Kath says:

Wha? How can anyone NOT like Leslie Jones? I am a blotchy white Australian, but love Leslie because she is as tall as I am, is funny as hell, and seems to be a genuinely decent person. How is she ‘ridiculous’ in any way?

    • Fl girl says:

      +1

  3. Nicole says:

I need her to go. She’s not the commentator we deserve but we NEED her. NBC coverage is always the worst. It’s why I don’t watch it!

  4. Pinky says:

Alt commentary is needed. NBC’s coverage sux Bieber balls.

I can’t wait for the women’s gymnastics finals!!!!!

    • lilacflowers says:

I do hope they actually show us other teams too. So far, I’ve seen a tiny Brazilian person rule the balance beam – but I don’t think they actually said her name and Oksana Chusovitina do some vaults and maybe one other Russian woman and no coverage of any other teams. Instead, we see swim semi-finals.

      • I Choose Me says:

I’m watching a Canadian channel’s coverage of the Olympics. That’s how much I can’t be bothered with NBC and their so called coverage.

    • susiecue says:

The commentators. Are AWFUL. Thank you.

  5. Sixer says:

    She should go!

Meanwhile, here in the UK, we have the hilarity of #OlympicNan (swimmer Adam Peaty’s grandmother and actual worldwide trending hashtag) tweeting her bunting like there’s no tomorrow. May the universe bless her.

My favourite Olympic relative is still Burt le Clos being interviewed after Chad won gold in 2012, though.

    • lilacflowers says:

Unbelievable. Unbelievable. He cannot be believed. Unbelievable!

I will agree with him that that is a beautiful boy.

    • Sixer says:

Burt became quite the celeb here during 2012. It was all very sweet. I like the relatives going bananas during the Olympics.

      • Maum says:

Bert was hilarious. I remember watching it live and it was really spontaneous and cute, I liked that he’d basically misplaced his younger son in the chaos of the victory/medal ceremony.
Minutes before Chad le Clos had been crying like a little boy, wobbly lower lip and all, through the SA national anthem.

They’re BBC favourites, unlike Sun Yang and Yulia Efimova who have been openly and repeatedly slated as drug cheats. Good to see they have given up on political correctness re bans.

  6. LadyMTL says:

I enjoy the Olympics but man, she takes it to a level that I find kind of exhausting. Split screens? 4 events at a time? Goodness. I applaud her enthusiasm but I need a nap just trying to imagine being THAT into it.

If she does go to Rio I’m sure she’ll improve the broadcast, because so far what I’ve seen from NBC isn’t great (I watch everything on CBC here in Canadaland).

  7. Barrett says:

Can nbc hire her as new Olympics anchor?

    • lilacflowers says:

She is under contract with NBC for SNL, which may allow them to use her for other things.

  8. EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

Her tweets have been killing me. This needs to happen!

  9. Tiffany says:

I am surprised she was made an offer after her late night appearance. Best GOT commentary l, ever.

  10. Insomniac says:

She cannot possibly be worse than some of the current NBC commentators, who felt the need to inform me last night that falling off the beam during a gymnastics competition is “not what you want.” No kidding?

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Oh god, is this a worldwide thing? I swear the Eurosport commentator for Germany is the WORST sexist ever. During the ’80 Olympics he kept commenting on the Chinese team’s styling. “I’m not sure that much glitter is really necessary.” You’re talking about teenage girls you freak. Focus! Their expert constantly sounds like he wants to punch him.

      • Amaria says:

I think it is. Generally speaking, Polish sports commentators love to state the obvious, they also like weird metaphors. “Losing that goal was not in our interest” – o rly?!

      • littlemissnaughty says:

I totally meant ’08 Olympics. Good god.

    • susiecue says:

YES. Someone came out teary-eyed during the Opening Ceremonies, and Matt Lauer says, “This is the EMOTION of being here tonight.” Shit really Matt? Thanks, I was so confused

    • Devereaux says:

…no it CAN’T be worse than the coverage in the UK!! It is AWFUL!

Sorry, British people, but it IS.

I tried watching the women’s gymnastics last night and it was a *disaster*. The BBC gets a feed direct from Rio, so they aren’t in control of the cameras, or the editing. I missed most of Simone Biles, nearly all of Gabby Douglas. They put the camera on the gymnasts while they were sitting on the bench -and left it there!

We could HEAR what was happening. The sound of a landing, the punch of springboard. But we couldn’t SEE it!

Even the commentators were frustrated, saying “we’d much prefer to see what was happening…” They had to resort to having former Olympian Beth Tweedy DESCRIBE what was happening. Because that’s what you want on your TV, frickin’ radio commentary like its frickin’ 1920!

      Sigh.

How I pine for the pre-packaged 8pm NBC show. It may be cheesy, but at least you get to SEE it *weeps Olympic size tears*

I love it, and the last photo with the boy taking a selfie gives me life; my phone currently looks like that with the cracked screen courtesy of my 21 month old son 🙂

  12. Lucy says:

Leslie reacting to things is currently my favorite thing.

  13. sunsetsnow says:

It seems…exhausting and attention seeking. If she is a genuine fan then I am glad that she is having fun. It just feels extra.

    • Erinn says:

That’s where I’m at with it, too. I feel like… it’s just so over the top.

I have no hard feelings for Leslie, but from what I’ve seen I just don’t think her brand of comedy is my favorite… if that makes sense. I watched her on Seth Myers talking about GoT and I did find parts of that super amusing. But I just don’t mesh well with people who are THAT loud haha. If it was just… a few clicks lower in volume, I think I’d like it better – I’m a lot more introverted than that.

I have a friend who’s SUPER loud and has a ridiculous (and amusing) laugh. Whenever we go out for drinks with him, I go through varying levels of feeling self conscious if the rest of the crowd is relatively chill. I’d never trade him for anyone else, but sometimes I just feel very aware of how many people are looking at us when he’s especially loud. Ultimately, it’s all on me and my own insecurities though.

  14. mp says:

I don’t mean to sound over the top, but isn’t this like her patriotic duty??? 😀

  15. Nona says:
