Aidan Turner on the ‘rumors’ he’s being courted for 007: ‘There’s nothing in it’

While Poldark fans absolutely know Aidan Turner, I get the feeling that most people aren’t crazy-familiar with him. Much like Benedict Cumberbatch circa 2010, Turner is on the cusp of bigger stardom, and the paparazzi haven’t completely caught up, which means there are rarely pap shots. These are photos of Turner from Wednesday, when he stopped by BBC Radio 1 for an interview to promote Poldark. He no longer has his thick, bushy beard, which he had earlier this summer. Do you like him better bearded or no-beard? I have mixed feelings. He’s pretty handsome both ways though. I think he looks younger clean-shaven.

He’s being photographed more these days, but that’s because he’s being pushed front and center to promote Poldark, and because his name is consistently mentioned as a potential candidate for James Bond. As we discussed on Wednesday, British outlets are getting feverish in the hunt for a new James Bond, and Turner’s name has appeared on many “dreamcasting 007” lists. It’s gotten so intense that Turner is being asked about it consistently too, which happened again during his Radio 1 interview:

Aidan Turner has slammed “rumours” that he’s set to be the next Jame Bond. The Dubliner, who has been rumoured to be the next 007 since early this year, has now dismissed the claims – because Daniel Craig hasn’t stepped down from the role yet. Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1, Aidan aired his frustration at getting asked about James Bond every day.

“It’s just rumours, there is nothing in it,” Aidan said. “There is still someone else playing the role and that’s why I don’t like to talk about it. There is a James Bond.

“You’re chatting about someone else’s part, and Daniel Craig is well hard,” he added.

[From Goss]

Unlike, say, Tom Hiddleston, Turner doesn’t sound like he secretly wants the gig. Turner isn’t going to go on some massive Tiddlebanging campaign for Bond. I respect that. Plus, I do think he’s a little bit young for the Bond role – Turner is 33 years old, but he looks younger when he’s clean-shaven. That being said, it would be fun to have another Irish Bond.

I would NOT have a problem with this casting. This man is so talented. But I still want Idris because he brings a certain-I don’t know-maybe weight or gravitas with him. I feel like when I watch him, there’s something more to what he’s saying or doing in a scene. Plus his looks(superficial, I know but I can’t help it) he is so interesting to watch.

  2. tracking says:

Oh yes. He or Idris would be divine! Just please no Hiddles…

  3. Lilacflowers says:

    I vote No Beard

  4. applapoom says:

I just don’t find him attractive. He reminds of of David Walliams who I absolutely do not find attractive.

    • LadyMTL says:

I thought he looked good in the Hobbit trilogy but in these pics he’s not doing it for me. I think it’s the hair, it’s throwing me off.

In any case, I am rooting for Idris Elba, lol.

    • T.Fanty says:

He looks just like the 1990s Comedian Rob Newman, who was in the Mary Whitehouse Experience. Which is okay by me, as Rob Newman was way hot.

    • Decca says:

Comparing any one to David Walliams is a cruel thing to do.

  5. Justjj says:

1996 Gavin Rossdale has a time machine and is now speculated to be the new Bond? Wow what happened? He’s cute. I wonder what he would look like with a haircut. Team Idris all the way.

  6. Luca76 says:

I was reading on another site that probably they’re actually waiting on DC and these leaks are just to drum up interest in the next Bond and a ‘gift’ of sorts to the publicity teams of the actors mentioned. I totally believe it.

  7. Mia4S says:

What the tabloid press keeps failing to mention is that Daniel Craig has one movie left on his contract. The story about him “turning down another” was that he turned down another contract extension.

If they want him for one more, they’ve got him…….which means by the time a new Bond is needed almost every candidate discussed will have aged out of consideration (including Idris and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend)…which means we get to do all the speculation again. Hooray?

Although Turner might be an even better candidate at that point.

    • V4Real says:

But they can always let Craig out of his contract if they wanted to move faster with a new casting.

      • Mia4S says:

They could…but why? Criag is the best reviewed and most financially successful Bond ever. Producers are not going to want to take a risk until they absolutely have too. It’s possible sure; but all the talk that a new Bond is some kind of certainty right now is just silly. Spectre was not that well reviewed and still made $880 million dollars (!!!); more than most comic book movies. They don’t want someone new right now, trust me.

      • Lilacflowers says:

She doesn’t want to let him go. She wants him to do more films than the one more he has left. All this “next Bond” stuff is coming from the British tabloids and being picked up by other media outlets. The Bond people have nothing to do with it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Exactly. Craig has not asked to be released from his current contract. Barbara Broccoli has not shown any inclination to release Craig from his contract obligations. Hiddleston has actually pointed this out several times during interviews. Barring something completely unforeseeable, the next Bond film will star Daniel Craig as James Bond.

      • mom2two says:

This. Daniel Craig will be doing the next Bond movie, no doubt.

I think Aidan Turner would be a good choice for Bond, out of all the candidates mentioned. I like Idris for the role too but by the time the next Craig Bond movie is out and the next movie is ready for a new Bond, he will be too old at that point.

I gotta give a no way to Hiddleston, Tom Hughes, or James Norton-all of whom seem wrong for Bond. Both Hiddleston and Norton seem to work better as a Bond villain and Hughes I think works better in the Ben Whishaw role.

Yesterday’s article mentioned Charlie Hunnam as a possibility, I could see that. I’m personally campaigning for Richard Madden, I think we are long overdue for a Scottish Bond and he’ll be the right age by the time they are ready to reboot the role.

  8. Sharon Lea says:

Yes!!! He would be great. He has depth in his eyes, Bond is a smart thinking man and he fits this character.

    • ds says:

The eyes, yes! It must be because of the eyebrows but damn, when they do close up of him in Poldark I’m done for good. If I’d just seen his photo it wouldn’t do a thing; but on screen he’s got a great tormented, edgy vibe. I like him.

  9. Rinakaterina says:

He is so charismatic on screen! He has that something that catches your eye! I definitely root for him as Bond, he will do a fine job. As for Elba, i vote for him only because it would be nice to have a black Bond for a change.

  10. QQ says:

eh i Like him but he looks too .. floppy and Hipstery for this

  11. NeoCleo says:

I will watch the hell out of anything this man appears in. Actually, I believe I have done so.

    • Angel says:

‘And then there were none’ falls on floor:)

      • Ally8 says:

Yep, that one converted me to the Turner cause. But he needs that exact haircut for Bond. For a good time, google the images under:

Aidan Turner And Then There Were None

  12. Madpoe says:

Oh baby have not seen him in a dog’s age.

  13. Colleen says:

Love this actor!!!! Can’t wait for the return of Poldark this month!

  14. AgeofBellendia says:

He’s so beautiful it makes my eyes hurt 😀

  15. Iknowwhatboyslike says:

I just discovered Poldark this past weekend. Watched the entire season in one sitting. I’m still in shock that my kids allowed it. Loved Aiden as Poldark. But this picture, at first glance, i thought it was Joe Jonas.

  16. Trixie says:

This is the super hot Aidan Turner people keep going on about? I don’t think he’s good looking at all. Definite Nope on him playing Bond from me.

  17. saltandpepper says:

Hiddles for Bond! He’s old-fashioned, he’s suave, he’s handsome, he’s classy. Stop the rumour mill. He’s got the role bagged.

  18. Kate says:

Anything this man wants to do is okay with me

  19. Spiderpig says:

I’m highly biased but my sweet talented friend Bertie Carvel would be perfect casting. He’s been suggested for the role before in the press.

  20. Camille says:

He’d make a good Bond, far better than Tiddles *shudder*.

Another guy to throw in the Bond casting mix would be Dan Stevens, I watched him in a movie recently – ‘The Guest’ and both my husband and I thought he would make a great Bond.
