Stranger Things will be back next year with 9 episodes, will it be just as good?

Stranger Things (Netflix) Season 1, 2016
Spoilers for previously aired episodes of Stranger Things, mild spoilers for next season
Although Netflix seemed to take their time announcing that Stranger Things would get a second season it was pretty much a foregone conclusion given how much buzz it’s getting. Now we have sweet confirmation that the show is coming back in 2017. EW also has an interview with the show’s co-creators, brothers Ross and Matt Duffer, who give us a vague idea of what will be happening next season. If you’re the kind of person who hates even minor spoilers, please just skip this post and don’t yell at us, but these don’t read like spoilers to me. (I’m ok with learning plot details as long as a show’s ending is not revealed though, so I have a higher tolerance than most.) The good news is that the next season will be slightly longer with at least one more episode, that the Duffer brothers sound thoughtful about it and are trying to create a worthy season two, and that there’s not going to be a time jump at all. Time jumps can be the worst, so I’m glad they’re picking up where they left off. Here’s more:

Four new characters are coming
The Duffers reveal there are four new characters popping up in season 2. “There’s going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn’t see in season 1,” says Matt Duffer. There are nine titles in the recently released teaser, including one called “The Lost Brother.” Could that be one of the new characters?

They won’t say whether Eleven is coming back
While some, including EW’s own James Hibberd, have argued the series should be an anthology, the Duffers opted to tell a continuing story in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. Still, the pair toyed around initially with flashing forward a bit before settling on continuing the story in 1984. “I don’t think we ever thought anthology,” says Ross Duffer. “I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here [in the 1980s], there’s still things that are unresolved.” So, expect to see the return of Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), etc. “We don’t know about Eleven,” says Ross Duffer. “We leave that up in the air.”

They’re trying to learn from good movie sequels
“I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different,” explains Matt. “There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”

Last week the Duffers promised that there would be some kind of tribute to mousy Barb, the sensible best friend who met her demise in the Upside Down. It didn’t sound like they were going bring her back though. Luckily the actress who plays Barb, Shannon Purser, got a new job in a CW series based on the Archie comics, so she’s in demand now. She also is grateful for the fan’s support of her character and told People that it’s been nice to see. Purser said that “I never even hoped that Barb would be received the way she has been. She’s kind of a sad character in her mom jeans, but I think everyone feels like a Barb sometimes.” She added that Barb does her own thing and that she’s “unapologetic about who she is.

The Duffers also told EW that we’ll learn more about the realm of the Upside Down and whatever lurks there. They’re sticking to nine episodes so far for season two because they don’t want it to get unwieldy and they want to tell a “movie-like story where it’s never treading water.” They did that so expertly in this series that I have a lot of hope that they’ll bring us another incredible season.

I liked the series, but Winona Ryder got on my nerves. Don’t know if it was her character or her fidget-y acting, but she annoyed me. Am I the only one?

    • Escondista says:

No you’re not the only one – and I really love Winona -her Jo March is my spirit animal.
But she was a hit exhausting to watch. The kids were perfect!

      • Belle Epoch says:

The kids WERE perfect! So great. Wynona had moments of brilliance and long periods of hysterics tha eventually felt like overacting.

What will the series be without El? Bring back Eleven!!!

      • Olga says:

Oh, totally with you. Annoyed so much.

    • No, you’re definitely not the only one.

I just love, love, love the boy with no front teeth. So cute!

    • mkyarwood says:

I loved Wino in this, guys. She has always had that acting style. But, for me, the real reason she was amazing is that she was the grown up member of the kid’s club. She represents an adult who is pretty mythological to me: still young, still a kid at heart, able to support her kids for who they are. I work hard on this, but growing up a jaded feminist with many demons to confront makes it tough. Wino managed to show us what facing those demons might look like, in a literal sense. I’m babbling now, but Stranger Things has come right when it was needed. Amid a flurry of remakes and ‘homages’ which, to me, seem mostly about one person wanting to tell the story the way they see it. Stranger Things is an homage to SO MANY things, without actively stealing or repurposing. Like Orphan Black, whose direct Prisoner references make me happy. Anyway, I want it to come back, but I’m okay if it’s only 2 seasons.

    • QQ says:

Not the only one I was SCREECHING at my tv calling her Negligent ass Nutbar mom, I truly was like BITCH!!! YOU STILL HAVE THAT LIZARD BOY TO RAISE!! STOP BABBLING!!!

    • Trillion says:

Winona can’t play a mom to save her life. (but hey, maybe she’ll learn from watching all her super awkward scenes with Will and try to improve). All the kids were great except Lucas, but that might be the bad writing for his character more than bad acting. I’m hoping he gets better lines next season.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I think Lucas’s role was so important, but it is hard to play. He was the contrarian, the voice of reality. The story needs that kind of conflict so it doesn’t get too hokey and to move the story along. It’s like “the straight man” in comedy.

      • tealily says:

Aw, I loved Lucas! I thought all of the kids were spot on.

    • Pansy says:

She was very shouty and maybe dirty, but I think it was good because initially her kid was missing! If that doesn’t make you insane with “what if’s,” than what does?! And then she knew he wasn’t dead, but knew she was also maybe crazy. I think, while it was exhausting to watch, it makes sense she portrayed her like that.

    • Bonzo says:

Yeah, I didn’t find her performance memorable like I did in Heathers. The kids were all great as well as Chief Hopper.

I do hope they take the current story and move it in a new direction, answering a few questions from season 1 and inviting a lot more questions as the story evolves.

I love all the 80’s movie references… it made me think nostalgically on my childhood for the first time instead of trying to repress the memories.

  3. ell says:

yes!!! from what they’re saying they’re doing everything right e.g. trying to make a good sequel as opposed to rehash what they already did. i’m super happy, can’t wait.

    • tealily says:

Yes! As much as the first season felt like it should be a one off, I have to admit I am excited to watch more. What they are saying is very encouraging!

  4. original kay says:

Hmmm. I don’t think I’ll watch. The first season was just that good, and it concluded and what else is there to add? Sometimes it’s better to just let things stand alone.

Like Bloodline. Season one was magnificent. They story, the twists, the way they started at the end and worked it through for us, dropping hints and clues. It was superb, imo.
Season 2 was just a story. Start, middle, end. It was ok, not great. I won’t watch Season 3 if they make one.

Sometimes a 10 episode mini series is a far better option. 🙁

    • Bonzo says:

That’s a different take on Bloodline than I’ve seen anywhere else. They’ve said season 1 wasn’t that great, but season two was really good. I love Kyle Chandler and only stuck with two episodes of season one, so I wondered if I needed to give it another shot and make it to the second season.

      • original kay says:

I don’t know what to advise, I would always say watch til the end because it’s masterful, to me. Get through a bit of the family interaction parts, and watch how it all unfolds. Nothing is as it seems, nothing at all, and the writers were fantastic at revealing slowly what actually happened.

Season 2 was basic, to me, just another TV series with plot development and “how do they get out of this?” opposed to “what actually IS this?”
I don’t know if I’m explaining it well enough to do it justice Bonzo.

I loved Season 1. I loved Danny and fell for him, his story and why he did what he did. Since you haven’t seen it that’s all I’ll say- no spoilers. 🙂

Ok, watch it. Just binge watch it all. 🙂

      • bonzo says:

ok, ok, I’ll give it another shot. If only because of my love for Coach Taylor, even if he has taken a dark turn!

      • tealily says:

I loved both seasons of Bloodline, but they were very different. Season 1 was such a great, slow burn of a story. Season 2 gets more complicated, dealing with the fallout of season 1, but it’s telling a different story. Season 1 is all about the family history, season 2 is about the family’s disintegration. Bonzo, give it another shot, but just kind of let it take you along for the ride. It’s so worth it.

  5. Ji-Yun says:

The group of kids in this were so very good. And so very cute and lovely in the interviews I’ve seen since. May they never change *crosses fingers*.

  6. kri says:

I loved it so much. They just honored that time period. And the cast was amazing. I saw David Harbour acting alongside Vincent Donfrio (one of the best) and I knew he was just as good. He was awesome on this show.

  7. Qjoi says:

In the grand scheme of things I know this is the lowest on everyone’s mind, but I hope Mike and Eleven get to go to the Snow Ball 🙂 That being said, love the show and can’t wait till’ next year!

  8. MI6 says:

    OMG I LOVE THIS SHOW.
I’m watching it for the second time since you miss so much being scared sh*tless.
The underlying message is really deep and I love the metaphors. It’s the thinking man/woman’s horror/scify series.
I have a question, though: If it was lured by blood, why didn’t the monster eat the children? Barb looked intact and I know Will hid from it, but the monster seemed to devour the scientist from the first episode and also Dr. Brenner. Right?
This has been bothering me and I want to hear other people’s theories.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t think we know what happened to Dr. Brenner. Same with the first scientist. From what I saw with Barb and the first kid, the monster takes people back to The Upside Down. He doesn’t eat them on the spot, he overtakes them.

      • bonzo says:

Imma kinda hoping Barb & the others make cameos in the 2nd season. I can’t believe any of them are dead yet.

      • MI6 says:

That makes sense, Tiffany, since Will was coughing up that gross stuff in the finale. (I couldn’t even watch). So perhaps its spawn are transmitted to the people it kidnapped and returns with them to the rightside up? I wonder if Dr. Brenner is going to be back too? It seemed like he got pounced on pretty good at the end.
Bonzo, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but #RIPBarb. She’s dead and gone. Apparently the actress who played her has got another role.
I still don’t know how she died.

  9. paleokifaru says:

So happy to hear this! I was late to the game and just binge watched it last weekend.

  10. d says:

Happy to hear it got another season, I love the first, although I thought there were some weaknesses, imo. Much as I love Winona, I thought her performance was one of the weaker ones – I agree with comments above. Just “too” whatever and she did NOT give off a mom vibe at all, even a harried single parent mom. More like a woman who has to look after kids, than a MOM. But hopefully she’ll get better. I questioned some plot points and whatnot, but willing to see where they go next season. I was ok with Barb dying, although I did think it was weird people didn’t seem THAT concerned with her disappearance. But I’ve been told that was the time; people were kind of whatever. I took off for a short time when I was a teen – I finally turned around because I hadn’t really planned on needing supplies…no one noticed I had been gone or they pretended not to…my parents were very not sympathetic.
I thought all the kids in the series were GREAT and they had good chemistry.
