Renee Zellweger on rumors that Kenny Chesney is gay: ‘that made me sad’

'Bridget Jones's Baby' Berlin Premiere
These are photos of Renee Zellweger at the German premiere of Bridget Jones’ Baby on Wednesday. She’s wearing a bizarre black Monse one-arm dress with a high leg slit, ruching on the side which leads to a giant bow, a folded flap at the neckline, and even more unnecessary details like a bubble arm with a cutout across the top. It’s like a bad 80s prom dress made in home ec class.

Renee has a new interview with The Advocate and I’m struck by how much she sounds like Ashley Judd here. In fact she’s been sounding like Ashley Judd for a while in that she uses a lot of big words but doesn’t say much. Everyone is focusing on her comments about whether Kenny Chesney was gay. She said that the story is made up and it makes her sad, but there’s a lot of word salad to get through.

Do you have a similar gay confidant?
I’m lucky to have handfuls. The majority of my closest friends are gay, and I have my pearl. I went to Miami for New Year’s Eve some years back with him and his boyfriend, and we got paparazzied on the beach. We had a very Bridget Jones moment: He had no desire to be photographed in his trunks, so he told me, “You need to get out of here and go for a run right now!” Some tabloid ran the photos and wrote, “Has Renée finally found her pearl?” I was like, “Aww, he’s my pearl!” He’s family to me. We dated for a minute, actually.

After citing “fraud” as the reason for annulling your marriage to Kenny Chesney in 2005, many media outlets alleged that he must be gay.
I forgot about that. It’s a pretty big thing to forget, isn’t it? That made me sad. It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.

Were you tempted to publicly jump to his defense?
Well, I’d said all I needed to say on that subject. I’m an old-fashioned gal who doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to hang out your laundry on the lawn. I feel you devalue yourself as a human being when you share very personal things with a bajillion strangers who are making fun of you. I just don’t see that there’s any dignity in that. But sometimes it is difficult to just let something be what it is, especially when it’s unnecessary ugliness. Once you’ve said your piece, shouldn’t that be enough? And why is the ugliness that’s perpetuated in the media so attractive to people?

In Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’s lesbian twist, Bridget got a surprise snog from a female admirer. Has a woman ever expressed her love for you?

Yes, thank goodness. But I loved her differently. We talked about it, we laughed, and I was happy she trusted me and that we have a relationship where we could have that conversation.

[From The Advocate]

I actually remember those photos Renee mentions where she was running at the beach after being spotted with a male friend because she had a portable CD player with her. Although it was many years ago (it was before smart phones) hardly anyone was still using portable CD players back then. I think I found those, that was in 2006 and people were speculating about Renee’s love life because she had recently split with Kenny Chesney. She eventually went on to date Bradley Cooper, and we know how that turned out. She seems happy now in her relationship of over three years with Doyle Bramhall II.

As for whether checking “fraud” on her divorce papers meant that Kenny Chesney was gay, Kenny has explained that it was a legal decision in order to obtain an annulment. He insists he has a “long line of girls who could testify that I am not gay.” Kenny went on to clarify that he’s slept with well over a hundred women. Renee’s comments here remind me so much of her other recent interviews in that it’s hard to tell what she’s saying other than the fact that the media notices and speculates about her life and she dislikes that. She has an issue with not speaking plainly. I did really like what she said about a female friend who expressed a romantic interest in her. That was sweet.

You know , for all the fuss that’s been made over her face, here she just looks like an older, thinner Renee Zellweger to me.

I like what she said both about ‘gay’ being used as a pejorative and about not airing her laundry. I always have more respect for those who can manage not to play out their splits in public.

    • TreadStyle says:

Omg my first thought was this! She looks like the old Renee again! It caught me off guard, how did she do that so fast?!

      • Amy says:

How is this possible? I think going back has got to involve more magic than what she did when she messed with it in the first place. The eyelids alone. What?!!

    • Pamela says:

I noticed she looks like her “old” self too. Weird.

  2. hnmmom says:

I cannot stand to listen to Renee talk in real life. She has this very cloyingly precious way of speaking, makes me want to stand up and start screaming. I feel like she is acting more when she is being herself than when she in on screen. Plus add in her weird use of big words and everything feels off. Something nice: her legs look awesome.

    • KikiGee says:

I agree. She always seems overly mannered and timid. She used to be a competitive runner so I’m not convinced she’s this delicate little flower.

    • QQ says:

YESSSS everything you Said, Marion Cotillard sometimes gives me the same vibe but with more pot

    • Tifygodess24 says:

Years ago when she was still married to Kenny chesney she came into my best friends restaurant where I was also working. She was nice but kind of an odd presence. Almost uneasy. She was in town because Kenny had a concert close by. No one bothered her and she was able to quietly sit at the bar. I don’t remember much else except she literally drank our salsa for her meal. No food. Just salsa.

    • ladysussex says:

Strange I was looking for the “big words” in the interview and nothing stood out to me. Maybe she just reads a lot? I’m sensitive about this subject because I once had a boyfriend accuse me of “using big words” to sound smarter than him (I honestly have never done such a thing, but he was projecting his insecurities) but I’ve just always been a big reader/writer. But dammit when I see Blake Lively interviewed, I SWEAR she looks up big words and tailors her stories to include them. I think it was Jimmy Fallon’s show where she told an entire story just to use the word “septuagenarian”. BL is so contrived and I can’t stand her. But RZ, I just don’t see it.

  3. Beer&Crumpets says:

That IS a weird dress, but…. I’m strangely attracted to it. I could never wear it- on me it’d look like a pumpkin wearing a hefty bag- but if I *could* wear it right, I would. I think I like BECAUSE it looks like all the 80s prom dresses mutated into one mega Voltron of a dress. And then sent that dress to Finishing School.

Maybe shorten it a little, though. That mid-shin hemline…. awkward. What do they call that tea- length? Hack off an inch, maybe 2.

  4. Naya says:

If you read between the lines I think she is unable to deny ihe rumor plainly because it was probably true or atleast true in the sense that she discovered him in some same sex activity. Her issue seems to be the tone of the stories and the fact that theres nothing more damaging for a Nashville star. Its hard place to be in; either deny the truth or let him live with the repercussions of the truth. Anyway, I hate her baby doll voice but I really like her as an actress and person. She had a great run in the early noughties.

    • sherry says:

I don’t know if he’s bisexual or not, but I do know about 6 years ago my husband and I went to a really great restaurant in downtown Nashville to celebrate our anniversary. One of his former clients was the manager and came over to talk with us. He told us Kenny had been at our table the night before with a very pregnant woman and they were all over each other. He said it was “indecent” to watch them because they were so inappropriate.

By his “slept with 100 women” comment, I would guess he’s a frat boy that never grew up and I always wondered who that woman’s baby belonged to.

      • Kelly says:

I was down in the Virgin Islands some years ago sitting in a bar when he came in with his girlfriend of the moment, promptly ditched her, and tried to pick up every other girl in the bar for a threesome. She was NOT happy. Whether he is bisexual or not, he definitely loves ladies. I always took it as she caught him cheating or something, or finally found out about his drug habit, not that he was gay.

BTW, the owner actually threw him out of her bar when she saw him in there-she told us not only was she disgusted by his predatory behavior, but he had refused to pay a large tab once because he thought he was entitled to free stuff and he had stolen her logos for one of his tours. Never really looked at him the same way after that.

      • Christin says:

It doesn’t surprise me to hear these stories. My friend stayed in touch will him until he apparently became ‘too’ successful to communicate with those who supported him long ago. She mentioned how he would begin bragging or acting big for his britches, as we say. She’d then bring up the days when he was playing a couple of local dives with a handful of people present. He would get the hint and thank her for reminding him to be humble.

Once he adopted the whole island living / Buffett wannabe persona, he stopped staying in touch with a lot of the locals who helped him in the early days.

      • JenniferJustice says:

Most of his songs are geared toward college kids, college life, drinking beer and having sex with randoms. The rest are Jimmy Buffet knock-offs – living the life on some beach and hooking up with locals.

What does that say about a person? He can only impress the young and stupid or the foreign and naive. He cannot impress a peer. That is all.

    • Esmom says:

That’s how I read it, too. I think she’s saying so many words because she’s trying to be truthful yet discreet.

The dress is crazy but she’s making it work. She looks great.

    • holly hobby says:

Wow thanks for the Kenny Chesney/Renee stories. These sound fascinating!

    • ladysussex says:

Naya I was thinking exactly the same. I read it as “It’s sad that they used the word ‘gay’ as a pejorative.” and not “It’s sad they said he was gay because he’s not.”

  5. Franny Days says:

Kenny Chesney gives me the creeps 😒

  6. AlleyCat says:

I hate Kenny Chesney’s response to being asked if he was gay. I slept with over 100 women! I am the most manly person ever!

  7. Shady says:

I actually feel that Renee speaks very clearly. Maybe it is unusual to have a celebrity speak with this combination of insight and dignity about the cruelty and humiliation involved in some celebrity gossip items.

    • sherry says:

Me too. I think she’s very thoughtful and deliberate with her answers as opposed to just saying whatever pops into her head.

      • Stumpycorgi says:

Agreed. I also don’t understand the “big words” complaint. Nothing she said sounded try-hard to me, and in any case, why is it a bad thing for her to sound intellectual? I also appreciate that she takes a stand here. It’s all too easy for female celebrities to claim they have no opinion on social issues (eg, “oh no, I’m not a feminist– I love men!”) so as to appeal to the masses.

  8. Cinderella says:

Maybe it’s just me, but these more recent photos of her look more like her old self than ones taken months back. Especially the eye area.

  9. Livethelifeaquatic says:

Have you listened to country music lately? Especially songs by male artists? They all must have the same writers. Of course it is unacceptable to be gay…most of the songs are about getting a girl to sit in the passenger seat of the man’s manly jacked up truck. It’s laughable. My husband likes country and I can’t stand it for this reason. I prefer my community eclectic station…I would actually rather listen to soft jazz…anything but today’s country, which sounds more like pop to me.

And I always knew Kenny was gay. Hopefully in the future there will be more out artists in Nashville and just in general.

    • sherry says:

I live in the Nashville area and the only country musician I listen to and buy their music is Miranda Lambert. I have loved her music for years.

I just downloaded Vice the other day and love it.

    • Christin says:

I don’t listen to any current country (radio) for this reason. The songs are mostly interchangeable redneck lyric pop.

Kenny did have a couple of good ballads earlier in his career. When he got into a more islander frat boy style, I stopped listening. He may have adopted that style to carve a niche for live performing.

  10. Christin says:

Kenny was a scrawny guy who went to college with me. He dated or was friends with several people I know. They don’t believe the gay rumors (though bi is certainly possible). He was obssessed with music, and that dedication obviously paid off (he makes a fortune from touring).

I’m happy that he made it big, but the bragging comments about women are too much. He was NOT a stud muffin in college. He played small local venues and often had just a few people in attendance. My friend who stayed in contact with him after he started getting famous, laughs off the gay rumors. She says he definitely enjoys women.

When he played a local venue once his fame was on the fast track in the late ’90s, some girls were cat-calling and asking him to turn around and show his butt. He finally commented that no one wanted to admire his rear when he was at the area college years before. He blended into the background then, playing with a bluegrass band, and I think that stuck with him. Maybe he over compensates now, who knows.

    • LizLemonGotMarried says:

ETSU represents! Class of 2002 here, I remember dating one of the frat guys and he showed me Kenny’s frat picture on the wall of their house. (Lambda Chi maybe? I went through a frat boy phase.)

      • Christin says:

Hey! Class of 1990 (same as Kenny). His last name was misspelled in one of our yearbooks (fraternity group photo – can’t remember the specific fraternity name).

He’s playing Bristol tonight (first time playing in the Tri-Cities since the time he accepted his alumni award at the Appy Fair in ’98). Some of the UT fans are giving him grief for being a fair-weather type (off and on) fan. I’m sure it will be a huge turnout, regardless.

  11. QQ says:

What in the Project Runway Hell is she wearing?!?! this looks like the one they send home for poor tailoring, bad choice of material and generally bad proportions… and then Heidi wears it at the premiere of a Box of Cereal

    • I Choose Me says:

Giggling at ‘the premiere of a box of cereal. ‘

    • ladysussex says:

LOL I was thinking similar thoughts, QQ, but I thought it was just me and my strange aversion to asymmetry. It really does look like a fledgeling designer’s attempt at being edgey and groundbreaking by “breaking all the rules”.

  12. Melanie says:

I thought I was the only one who was having a problem understanding her answers lately. And, she dated her gay friend “for a minute”?!

  13. I Choose Me says:

I guess I speak word salad then. Could she be more straightforward, sure, but I understood her just fine. She’s not Kristen Stewart level of inarticulate.

Oh and she’s got great legs.

  14. K says:

Is she squinting more in these pictures to look more like her former self?

  15. KiddVicious says:

I was going to say if the sleeve wasn’t on that dress it would look nice, sort of a classic one shoulder, then I saw the close up. Nope. It does look like a homemade prom dress.

I don’t listen to country music so I only know of Chesney from Renee. There’s something about the way he looks that makes me think sex with him would bony and quick, like rabbits. I’m now thinking it’s quite possible for him to have had over 100 women, and probably all in the same night, that’s how quick it is. 😀

    • CaryleBee says:

KiddVicious: Hehheheheheheheheheheh! Rabbits. That’s it, that’s what I was thinking exactly.

In person he’s rather small and hairless and always made me think of a Chihuahua. He comes across as a man who doesn’t really like himself and attempts to gather his self-worth from trying really hard. Must be exhausting.

  16. kellzbellz says:

Is this what passes for “big words” in the age if Twitter? “Unnecessary?” “Devalue?” “Perpetuate?” These are more middle school words than college words.

  17. holly hobby says:

Yay Renee’s old face is back. Please don’t do whatever you did before Renee.

  18. Matchday says:

Everything seems to disgust or make Renee sad these days: press intrusion, society’s views on female beauty, gossip, rumors that she married a gay man.

If this movie tanks, I don’t doubt she’ll find a scapegoat to blame and then be disgusted/saddened by it.

  19. JRenee says:

Definitely more like her old self.
    I understood her just fine.
Still seems like she didn’t deny the rumor.

  20. Bread and Circuses says:

I don’t much like that dress, but I sure love those shoes, especially from the side.

And she looks squinty again! Which is a good thing, as far as I’m concerned, because she looks like herself again, and she always was lovely. 🙂

  21. Miranda says:

I must admit robinson.buckler @ Yahoo. com is really a genuine man when it comes to getting an ex back, i never believe that my man will ever come back to me not after the wonderful work done by ROBINSON BUCKLER, my man is now with me he loves me like never before. What could i have done…
