Zayn Malik on being a Muslim pop star: ‘I try not to comment on politics’

zayn1

A year and a half ago, I was pretty much convinced that Zayn Malik was a snotty little a—hole. I was convinced that leaving One Direction was going to be his biggest career blunder ever, and a blunder he would be trying to walk back for years. I was wrong! Zayn launched himself as Zayn 2.0, talked some sh-t about 1D, released a popular solo album and started dating Gigi Hadid. While everything’s not perfect – Zayn still struggles with severe anxiety, apparently – he does seem healthier, happier and more independent these days. Zayn covers the new issue of Highsnobiety Magazine, something I have never heard of before now. The interview is pretty good – you can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Don’t call him a celebrity: “I hate the word celebrity. I think it’s a dangerous road to go down, thinking of yourself as a celebrity, because then you somehow automatically think that label makes you superior to other people. Some people just want to hang around you because they know your name, so they think that means they know you, and I can see through that bullsh-t a mile off.”

One Direction’s grooming policies: “We were literally meant to ask permission before we changed our hair or like, grew a beard. It was ridiculous.”

Leaving 1D: “I don’t think you can ever be prepared for something like that. I knew there would be a big reaction in the press, because there was so much attention on us at that point, but I had no idea how fans would react.”

Whether he considered the reactions of his impressionable young fan-girls: “I try not to take [my actions] into consideration too much because if I did, I’d never do anything. It’s a lot of pressure. I never claimed to be a role model, I just make music.”

He tries to stay authentic:
“It’s cynical to say, but I think to really ‘make it’ in a commercial sense, you have to be a bit of a faker. If you’re not going to be fake, then you need a really thick skin. You have to not give a sh-t what people think about you. You have to guide your own career and not follow other people’s expectations of what kind of artist they want you to be.”

Being attacked for being a Muslim pop star: “Generally, I try not to comment on politics or controversial issues in public because I don’t think that it’s my place. I struggle with the invasion of privacy that comes with this job. I also think one of the most negative aspects of being in the public eye is that you have no control over people’s perception of you.”

[From Highsnobiety]

His non-answer for the question about his religion is interesting and diplomatic. He’s been accused of bringing “jihad” to pop music (???) and just this past May, Azealia Banks went off on a particularly unhinged and flat-out racist rant against him on Twitter. Zayn has never really gotten political about the fact that he’s Muslim and half-Pakistani, and I would argue that Zayn sees himself as a pop star first and a Muslim man secondly. But maybe I’m wrong – maybe he can be all of it, all at once. All that being said, I dislike the “I never claimed to be a role model” argument. There’s a balance between making the kind of art you want to make and simply acknowledging that your fanbase is mostly made up of incredibly impressionable tween and teen girls.

  1. Jack Daniels is my patronus says:

Maybe he sees the level of vitriol that is experienced by some when they voice their opinions and he doesn’t want any part of that.

He’s starting to grow on me.

    • Jen says:

I agree-I don’t blame him for not discussing his faith during an age where Donald Trump is a presidential nominee.

      • Anthi says:

He actually commented once about a year ago I think about the Israel/Palestine situation and particulary what was happening to Gaza athe moment (and honestly I agreed with him, short of) and he received a massive backlash, so I see where he’s coming from when he tries now to be diplomatic.

  2. Xav says:

he is one good looking dude

  3. Nicole says:

Pretty sure he tried to alllivesmatter some people recently and got dragged by his fans. So not exactly the truth.
Also I’m not sure why he keeps landing covers. His album wasn’t a hit…it was #1 for a week and virtually disappeared. No follow up single either. So not what I call a success. It will be interesting to see if Niall fares better…his single was good too.

As for anxiety I hope he learns to manage it so he can do what he loves to do. Everyone deserves that.

    • FingerBinger says:

All of this. His album flopped. It wasn’t popular at all.

      • zozigr says:

Not true. #Update Zayn’s debut album ‘Mind Of Mine’ has gone Silver in the UK (today)
Platinum usa, uk australia france etc

    • Naya says:

That first single was a smash hit. It was every where for awhile. He could have leveraged that into a Nick Jonas type of career but he barely promotes his work and thats not his fault. To be so talented and yet crippled by anxiety is terrible. It’s still early days though, he can still figure it out and come back. Someone needs to sit him in a room with Beyonce to teach him how to hide behind a stage alter ego.

    • Jessie says:

      @ Nicole

You completely left out the bit where he was put in a category with bieber and other white boys and said to be a white boy whose exploting black music and never has experienced police brutality etc. This was the context and his response should be seen in its context where a Muslim brown man was attacked for not understanding being seen as other which is incredibly offensive to Muslims. He was foolish to reply but you made it sound as if he tweeted that out of nowhere. Muslim men and women are experiencing police brutality and suspicion all over the world every day. Zayn himself is from a deprived primarily Asian area in the north of England It’s mess up to compare him to bieber and jonas bros. it’s not only him that lack knowledge.

  4. Val says:

I’m not sure why it should matter that he’s Muslim. Does anyone ask other pop stars about their religions (or lack thereof)? He is right to not have answered that question.
He does have a song (songs?) in Urdu, which is cool, I think it’s great that he respects his heritage.

Anyway, he is very handsome and his music is enjoyable.

    • Heat says:

      My thoughts, exactly, Val.
It rather annoys me when his religion is brought up in interviews, when that is not the case with other pop stars.

  5. Lyka says:

I’m also half-Pakistani (also on my dad’s side) and am Muslim and speak Urdu and have tattoos and listen to pop music and am a perfectly average person just living my life. I can’t help but love how Zayn being a pop star just kind of quietly normalizes my experience, and while I think it would be dope if he was more vocal about being Muslim and South Asian in the Western world, I don’t fault him for just doing Zayn. As @Val said before me, he even did a lovely Qawwali-inspired track in Urdu on his record, so it’s not like he’s shy about who he is. No beef with this one.

    • QQ says:

I super duper LOVE that about Him, This very Moment I consider it such a Baller move that his put a song in Urdu and it wasn’t explained/translated for middle America or fans. nothing It was in, it was beautiful and next track, that intrigues me

  6. Ayra. says:

“popular solo album” wouldn’t go that far, the first week sales were decent, then it flopped..hard. People know him, he’s popular but that didn’t equal in album sales. He’s at about 500k in sales since March.

    • Leah says:

Not true. He’s on top 20 of the top selling albums of the year. Hardly a flop. The thing is that nobody really sells albums in bucket loads anymore. Apart from the major stars ( Beyonce, Taylor etc).

  7. Melody says:

Top photo gives me Willmer vibes. I’m disturbed that I also find it attractive.

  8. AlleyCat says:

I’ll always have a soft spot for him, but he has annoyed me so much since going solo. He continuously says that he hates being a celebrity yet he dates Gigi, and then they frequently call the paps. The only thing he talks about now is how he disliked 1D. It made you who you are, so just keep that silent! And it’s been more than a year! His album was a complete flop regarding sales, so I feel like he dates Gigi to remain in the public.

  9. Z says:

His album didn’t flop. I saw an article recently that showed the highest selling albums of the year on pure sales, and he was at 19, with over half a million sold. With streams, the number was higher. He could go platinum easily if he manages to win any type of music award or can get his anxiety under control and do a mini tour. Niall’s song is terrible. I haven’t been able to listen to the whole thing once

  10. Lucy says:

I feel bad for his struggle with anxiety, but I also still think he’s a snotty a-hole, simply because he hasn’t done anything that shows me otherwise. As I said before, it’s great that one of the most popular popstars at the moment is a Muslim guy, but I wish it was someone else.

  11. Leah says:

He did actually tweet some political stuff (pro- Palestine) when he was in 1D. There was a big backlash so i can understand why he stopped commenting, especially in the current climate.

  12. QQ says:

    Thoughts:

*I LOVE his face, he is a beautiful Guy

*Love MoM still and Cruel, I Really like his musical Vibe

*I Wonder honestly and in No shade to what degree he is Struggling with anxiety vs his management keeping him away to build an air of Mystery and exclusivity, Like again I’m genuinely curious if this is a cynical calculation or his management giving him a wide berth to work on his anxiety issues, I wonder cause his music and voice are popping but he is truly and well not touring/and pulling out of appearances so this has to affect their bottom line… or does it not matter cause he is “good”

  13. annaloo. says:

When people say that they don’t want to be role models, I find this a very disingenuous statement. An actor wants an audience, a performer wants applause — you are choosing to place yourself in front of others for their approval, their money, their love. While I’m not saying that you have to live the life of a penitent monk or nun, let’s not kid ourselves: pop music is for youth, and youth copy their idols. It’s a position of responsibility whether one wants it or not. I think this kid is fine, and good luck to his career, but we have so many people these days that want to take no responsibility for their actions or words, that give insincere apologies and extreme narcissism. I just feel that one thing comes with another, and the success comes with some modicum of responsibility.

    • Wren33 says:

But I don’t think “serious” musicians, like rock bands are expected to be role models. Just some pop stars that have youngish audiences. Getting acclaim for talent is different than saying “all kids should live as I do”.

  14. Margo S. says:

Can i just say damn Zayn. You are hot as hell! And I actually like what he has to say! Win win!

  15. Chaine says:

He’s hot now that he looks like a man and not a hairless teenybopper.

  16. Emylee says:

He’s not really a practising Muslim like other are not really practising catholicism etc..
So I am not even understanding the question about his beliefs

  17. Jessie says:

    He’s so effin pretty! 😍

  18. MellyMel says:

    His face 😍😍😍…so so gorgeous!

  19. Fadella says:

I don’t get why people call him a flop (his album is in the top 20 biggest sellers in the US, and number 1 for debut albums this year). I’m rooting for Zayn, there’s something about him beside his looks and talent. I love his first album and am looking forward to hearing the second one.

  20. mary says:

I love his album, I still play it. I don’t blame him re avoiding political discussions. I have noticed that when this kid says or does anything the UK media and the 1D fans aggressively harass him. That Azaelia Banks thing was fricking insane . By the way whenever you see someone post that his album was a “flop” its sure to be a bitter 1D fan , he needs to shake them off .
