First thing’s first: Dev Patel looks really great these days, right? Right. While the puffiness of his mustache is questionable, overall he looks really good with facial hair, and I’m enjoying his longer hair overall. These are photos from last night’s BFI London Film Festival premiere of Lion, the true story of an Indian man who was adopted (when he was a child) by an Australian couple. The kid grows up and wants to find his birth family, including a long-lost brother. As I’ve said in previous posts, I’m not really into the story and I think it looks overwrought.
Nicole Kidman plays Dev’s adoptative mother in the film and Rooney Mara plays his girlfriend. Thankfully, Rooney’s sour puss did not make an appearance at the LFF. Kidman and Patel paired up to walk the carpet together and they really looked lovely together. Not in a creepy way, just in a “wow, they’re two tall, lanky, lovely people” way. The Sydney Morning Herald claims that Nicole’s performance could earn her an Oscar nomination. As I said, I’m not really feeling it and I doubt that a story about an Indian man would end up getting an Oscar nomination for the white actress, but stranger things have happened.
Nicole wore this Armani Prive Fall 2016 gown in black velvet. I was beyond thrilled when I realized this was velvet – I love when it gets to be the time of year when velvet starts appearing on red carpets! This is good quality velvet too – the whole look is very “rich.” My only complaint about the dress is that the pockets feel oversized and unnecessary. The gown has a really high slit too, so Kidman was Jolie-Legging all over the place. Also: Nicole’s face looks pretty good, right? I’m sure she’s still Botoxing and stuff, but maybe she has a new guy because it doesn’t look overdone.

Dev looks much better with short hair and clean shaven, ala Newsroom, but he’s very goodlooking, isn’t he?
Nicole looks a lot better these days.
Oh, I definitely like him better with the long hair and facial hair, but yes, he’s a cutie either way. And doubly-yes: Nicole is looking great. That’s the lovely face she should have aged into, rather than the frozen landscape she was sporting for a while.
This was quite a big story here in Australia and incredibly moving. For that alone, I hope the movie does well.
Yeah, I remember this being in the news. Incredible story.
Did you watch the trailer? What did you think of Dev’s accent?
I thought it was great, but I don’t trust my own judgement. For some reason, Australian accents (from real Australians) sound weird to me in movies. Everyday Aussies = normal, no accent. Australian news = normal, Australian soaps = normal, etc. Real Australians on the big screen = what the heck? We don’t sound like that!
So, since Dev sounds normal to me (more normal than Nic), I’m wondering if it’s actually closer to the American-Hollywood accent.
‘Jolie-Legging’ – bahahaha
Aside from that, I think the dress is nice but agree the pockets are unnecessary.
Nicole’s face does look much less jacked here.
Agreed. And the dress would look better without the ties. They are distracting and uncooperative?
Best Nicole has looked in a long time.
She looks amazing!
They both look great. I haven’t seen Dev in a long time, he looks so mature now!
I know, it wasn’t that long ago that he was just a kid! He’s clearly at the age where a couple years make a massive difference in their maturity/appearance. My kids are going through that…they were literally kids a couple years ago and now they are undeniably young men. It’s a little disconcerting and bittersweet.
Anyway, I do think Nicole looks lovely, too. The dress is a little overwrought but the general effect is nice. Velvet is also one of my favorites.
Dev is only 26? Just looked him up on IMBD.
A beautiful man indeed.
Kidman has the best legs in Hollywood – as someone with muscular calves I am so envious!
She could get a nom, if deserved, for Best Supporting Actress; there’s nothing inherently wrong with that.
Nicole schooled the Jolie on how to do the leg. Perfect.
She is a queen on the red carpet. Remember the chartreuse silk dress? I still swoon whenever I see it!
Yes, I remember that dress. I always love her clothes.
Ditto.
Nicole looks amazing!
She looks great! I can’t help it side-eye this casting a little bit though. Is she really old enough to play his mother?
He’s 26, she’s 49 so yes.
The movie looks good. Will have to look out for it. Glad to see Patel getting meatier roles.
I like the look, and her makeup is fantastic. She always looks good with strong lipstick.
She looks gorgeous and confident.
Not a fan of the way she dresses. This is the best I’ve ever seen her look.
She looks stunning.
I’m quite keen to see this movie – I hope it’s decent. I find it amusing that Dev has had to adopt an Indian accent in so many of his films, despite being a born-and-bred pom! The Aussie accent shouldn’t be too difficult for him.
Nicole looks so life-like
Lol. She looks less jacked in some ways but I still get the sense it’s hard work for her to smile.
They both look great. I’m not feeling Dev’s mustache, I prefer a full on beard but I do like the longer hair look.
She looks wonderful, but the pockets on the dress serve no point whatsoever and cheapen the look.
Being adopted, im super interested in this story!
Nicole looks great and Dev looks soooo much better with facial hair.
Love everything about this look. Highlights her long, slender figure and her gorgeous skin. She looks spectacular.
Im happy she is less Granny freeze than she was a few years ago. She still does her lasers and some Botox and fillers but it’s less intense And thank got she chilled on the lips. Her mouth was always a good feature and she looked dumb w them over done.
Google earth covered this (he found the location back using street view)-and yes it was a ad-but OMG it’s amazing and one of the few times a google ad made me cry. It’s a powerful story and I’m glad they made it into a movie. I don’t think it’s overwrought-it’s just really really moving.

OMG Scal- I got teary eyed too. So nice that his adoptive mother put that map up and so nice that he is financially supporting his birth mother.
I immigrated to Canada from India when I was about 5 yrs old and I’m easily able to identify my pre-5yr old memories because , visually, they all take place in a tropical climate. And that is the quite limited extent to how I can relate to this incredible story.
Go Nicole…she looks stunning here. Love everything – dress, shoes, makeup. Dev looks good too – I’ve always liked him. I didn’t realize he was so tall – or maybe it’s just the visual of Nicole finally standing next to a man who’s taller than she is. Looking forward to the movie.
Dev is a total hottie. I love me a tall lanky man.
+1, as do I haha
They’re both absolutely gorgeous! And yay! The movie sounds great.
I feel like the dress could lose the huge bowties or whatever, but they both look great. I’m all about more Dev on my screen.
I love women who severely Botox, because they always forget about the neck. She has a 49 year old neck, but is trying to look 15 years younger in her face (and there’s nothing wrong with having a neck your age, we’ll all get there).
How did her face recover so well?? Courteney Cox needs to get in touch with her people.
Tear jerker story backed by the Weinsteins – I’d be shocked if Kidman WASN’T nominated.
She looks lovely.
Wow, Nicole looks gorgeous!
Is it creepy that I think they’d make a super hot couple.? Dev is looking super hot … we need way some movie sex scenes with him so that I can get me some glowing skin…
I red the real life kid accidentally went missing when going to wrong train or something like that. So he reserached the train rates as an adult to find his home village. It was really moving story.
Love velvet and this dress is amazing on her. Her face has settled down thank god. Also approve of Devs longer hair and mo very cute.
Dev is adorable.
I love a big mustache. Dev looks very handsome. I have been thinking NK looks much better these days. Happy, healthy, more relaxed. Good for her. She looks lovely here. The dress works on her, hair, makeup, styling all very well done.
