Duchess Kate in a $400 Self Portrait dress at London premiere: cute or nope?

wenn29968350

Doesn’t it feel sometimes like the Duchess of Cambridge regresses? Like, she’ll have a few months where she behaves pretty well and there are no gaffes or wardrobe malfunctions, and then she’ll go away (on vacation, perhaps) for a month and when she comes back, it’s like she’s forgotten how to do everything? That’s what this event reminded me of – how Kate falls back into bad habits, especially when she’s “forced” to do an event on her own. Last night, Kate attended the London premiere of A Street Cat Called Bob, a premiere which benefited one of her patronages, Action on Addiction.

First off, Kate chose the wrong kind of dress for an evening premiere in November. I thought that perhaps this was a winter white, something rather heavy and substantial. But no. It’s a light, summery frock and I can’t even tell if the eyelet/crochet fabric on top is lined. In some of the photos, I don’t even think it is. Plus, the dress has a giant slit to the thigh, so of course with such light, summery fabric, the skirt blew open and everyone at the premiere got a good look at Kate’s duchess-thighs. Because we can’t go a month without her skirt blowing up or falling open. The dress is an off-the-rack piece by Self Portrait. It costs £320, or roughly $400. She also cut costs by not getting the dress tailored, or tailored well, because I swear the intention is start a rumor about a third pregnancy.

True story: Paris Hilton wore this same dress last week, at the amfAR gala – go here to see the photo. Um… Paris Hilton wore it better? At the very least, the fit is better on Paris.

And no worries, Kate did get to meet the cat, Bob. Bob is a lovely, slightly grumpy ginger kitty who behaved very well at his premiere. Kate seemed to like him a lot and Bob allowed Kate to pet him. Bob’s scarf is the best part about this post.

  1. Lorelai says:

    Nope!

It looks exactly like at least three other dresses she already has.

I also wouldn’t choose white for November.

    • LadyMTL says:

Winter white can look amazing if it’s done right, but this really misses the mark. I do like the fact that she brought in the red purse and (albeit bleh) shoes to match with her poppy and contrast with the white, but that’s about it.

      • Lorelai says:

@LADYMTL, I agree, “Winter White” *can* be gorgeous, but this…isn’t it.
I don’t know if it’s the material or what, but this dress looks out of place for this time of year, somehow.

Also agree about the shoes and clutch. I would have fistpalmed if she’d shown up with the nude shoes & clutch again!

      • Eleonor says:

I think if she had a chignon a tiara, everything would have been muuuuch better. or at leas much royal.

    • mbh12 says:

I don’t understand why she wore something so see through . In some photos you can see everything. Glad she wore underwear or is that top a body suit?

The dress looks a tad too big on Kate, although she does wear this color white well. I don’t like the way this dress or outfit fits her though.

She sounds so pretentious and fake in the video when she speaks. Marble mouth, she sounds like she’s trying to sound more aristo. royal than William now. She sounds like marbles in her mouth.

Also the hair, the curtain of hair with the skirt like a curtain blowing open, it’s all too much. It looks sloppy for some reason. imo

On a positive, she seemed happy to do this royal duty .

I loved how Bob the Cat ignored her or couldn’t be bothered. LOL So cute.

    • Poppy says:

I just can’t believe that after 2 tours full of brand new designer outfits, she’s still wearing new ones every time she appears in public – & not all decent outfits at that! The black Lace Temperley dress that she originally wore to the War Horse premier would’ve looked great! Or if she was desperate to show off her legs how bout the dark green McQueen she wore to the BBC Sports Awards – that shade of green real!y suits her. She needs to start & use some common sense where her spending is concerned – especially as its other peoples money! Us Brits are getting really peed of with her!

      • Mare says:

If she wore the same dress a second time, she’d get called out on that. $400 is pretty inexpensive for a dress compared to what some of the red carpet strollers wear.

      • Poppy says:

” I will not be purchasing new outfits for every formal occasion. I cannot be expected to wear a new outfit for every royal engagement. I am not a fashion model. ” quote by Kate in 2011. Being a member of the British Royal Family is first and foremost a job – a job of representing Britain, the Commonwealth, its people & its interests. All that’s been talked about regarding the premier is her dress, the cost, does it fit properly, is it see through, the revealing thigh-high split! Nobody has talked bout the cause it was in aid of! After nearly 6yrs as a royal if she hasn’t realised by now its not about her its about the cause, then she never will! By re-wearing outfits she already has in her “work” wardrobe, the spotlight will shine on charity/cause. And if anybody moans cause she’s re-wearing outfits – if its good enough for more hard working members of the royal family then its certainly good enough for her. Can you really imagine the Monarch would pay $6000 for a D&G dress???

  2. lightpurple says:

    I’m here for Bob.

  3. Clare says:

Self Portrait have some wonderful dresses and she chose THIS? Jesus.

And I’m sure she is trolling us with these choices – I mean, that slit? How is that appropriate when you’re out there representing the Crown?

  4. Ms. Turtle says:

It’s not my favorite thing she’s ever worn but I don’t mind the thigh split. It’s a movie premiere and she’s not 50. She needs to take more fashion risks IMO. I’d ditch the suede shoes. Her shoe game is the pits.

    • Bitchy says:

The dress is not lined entirely. You can see that the line of wholes below the bosom is darker. That is the case because the dress is not lined entirely and because the bosom casts a shadow so that the wholes below the bosom appear darker.
Btw. there seems to be some skin-coloured strip as lining over her bosom.
Nope. Doesn’t befit her status. She ain’t Paris Hilton. Respectively she isn’t supposed to be like Paris Hilton. Paris wore it rather well.

The way Kate wears this dress – or the way the dress wears Kate makes me think of a very cheap woman at the cote d’azur looking for a sugar daddy. Those girls do look like her in a pretend-to-be classy way which is always a tad desperate-trashy and you never know what kind of sugar daddy they are looking for (for a ring or not).

      • mbh12 says:

I don’t understand why she doesn’t take all this into account before she chooses something and knowing how Windy it was outside and see through skirt area in front of the lights. Why isn’t she getting these things down to a science yet?

    • Nic919 says:

The slit was more noticeable because of the gusty wind outside at the premiere. There was an almost flash again. As if windy weather in November is something uncommon. You don’t see it in these photos but video shows that it was going to be another India cenotaph situation without the crotch clutch.

  5. BearcatLawyer says:

She could not decide between wearing a doily or a tablecloth. So naturally she wore both.

  6. DavidBowie says:

The dress is ok but those horrible shoes are another story. With all the wonderful choices in this world why, why, why does she have to wear such awful shoes?!?! Queen Letizia or Princess Mary need to intervene NOW.

  7. BooBooLaRue says:

    THAT KITTY IS EVERYTHING!

  8. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Nope, not only does it look like several other (and more expensive) dresses she has I really hated the slit side and floaty skirt but then again this is the Duchess of Flashing and there are several shots where the skirt looked like it was almost at her ears. At least the FUG shoes are repeats.

And yes Paris wore it better.

    • Olenna says:

Totally agree on all points, especially Paris’ look, which is much better. It’s like a different dress on Katie Bucket.

    • Bitchy says:

When you wrote “Duchess of Flashing” the memories of this tv series “the nanny” popped up. The nanny is from Flashing, Queens and she is not quite up to the somewhat upper class standards in the Sheffield household. Neverthelesss the nanny is way more classy than Kate who keeps flashing people and whose most interesting moments always include some element of un-dressing by bad dressing or pretend-to-be accidental stripping.

and is the spray-tan back? And I am rather fascinated by her makeup: lipstick is no blah and so unglamorous. She really could have put on some red carped red and then not much on the eyes or cheeks. That would have looked very glamorous. But like this it looks as if Katie Bucket wrapped herself into mummy’s curtains.

Speaking of wearing curtains: Scarlet O’Hara (Gone with the Wind) did wear her mummy’s curtains in order to snatch a man. But she wore them with pride and self-confidence and she probably sparkled like an emerald. Katie Bucket will never manage.

  9. Dee says:

I honestly think she looks fine and appropriate.

    • Tulip Garden says:

Me too! I was beginning to think that I was the only one. It’s like pearl clutching is necessary because the Duchess showed some leg? Blech! So very, “ankles are sexually enticing, tramp” way of thinking, I don’t get it. If people don’t like this dress, fine but even royal women are allowed to demonstrably have limbs, Thank God!

  10. The Original Mia says:

    Nope!

  11. Em' says:

I love the dress and I usually dislike everything she wears. And the slit, seriously, I don’ see what’s the big deal. It’s all about balance : long sleeves, high collar, loose pleated skirt and a slit to make it looks less matronly. She is 34 and it’s 2016, not 1956.
And I think the fit is good for once. She can breathe but it’s not hanging.
Those shoes are all kind of wrong though

    • Ms. Turtle says:

I should have just waited for you to comment! You said it better.

    • graymatters says:

Actually, I don’t like the slit because of balance. The top is lined, but full of holes so appears to show a lot of skin. The slit is just sexy overkill and doesn’t really match. If she wanted high-school prom sexy, she should skip the pleats and have similar lace from the thighs to the floor. That’s why it looked better on Paris. That and the material isn’t quite right for London in November.

    • Tough Cookie says:

and yet….if you look at pics of stylish women in 1956 (Grace Kelly comes to mind) they were stylish without being matronly. Waity just doesn’t get it. She may be “only” 34 but my 83 year old mom has more style. This dress looks like she grabbed it off a pile of dirty laundry on the closet floor.

      • Kitty says:

Exactly @Tough Cookie. I think we need to accept the fact she she’s boring and dull and it reflects on her clothes.

      • Em' says:

Tough Cookie : I was not talking about style. I hate her style. I agree with you and Kitty, she wears the most boring stuffs and I’m pretty much always mad at her fashion choices. For example she ruins a perfectly good dress with those goddamn awful shoes. I was simply saying that I am not offended by the slit : I don’t find it vulgar and I am most certainly not clutching my pearls about it.

Graymatters : the top is not really see through. I have a similar top. At first I would always wear an undershirt with it. But now I wear it with a nude bra and nobody can see it. I really don’t find the dress sexy and I have a very low tolerance for sexy outfits

  12. HCR says:

I wore a similar backless dress from this collection, which is a bridal collection, last week for my wedding. It took substantial tailoring to get it where it needed to go, but the whole line is aimed at brides on a budget.

  13. Kitty says:

Her style is so boring now. Have you guys noticed that their wasn’t a lot of Kate coverage? Everyone is talking about Harry’s girlfriend.

    • mbh12 says:

The UK headlines about Kate’s dresses are getting boring. That’s just about every headline about her. “Kate Stuns in ……… “

  14. lol says:

    I like her dress.

  15. Deedee says:

She took a decent dress and ruined it with uninspired styling. Yet again. Hair curtains, boring shoes, poppy pin getting lost on the dress. Bob the cat looks better styled.

    • Gloria says:

Strange how on Paris it looks fresh and on Kate it looks dowdy. I don’t think it’s because I have a hate on for Kate, and I think Paris is annoying.

      What poppy pin?!

      Three cheers for bob!!!

  16. fruitloops says:

Bob is not happy (but extremely patient obviously) 😀

  17. anonymous says:

huh yuh someone is trying to grab some attention from Meghan Markle ..

  18. kodakay says:

It’s very pretty but not for winter.

  19. PHAKSI says:

Ugly dress. Her posture makes it even more ugly. The slit was ridiculous. We dont need to see any more of her body

  20. vava says:

Hate the dress on her. It’s not season appropriate and that slit is too high for a royal woman. Commando Kate just has to show off again. She has several better winter white gowns she could have worn, but no – she has to get another one. And the styling is terrible….that poppy brooch just looks bad on that dress. Between the hair and the crotch clutching, she certainly had busy hands………………she’s ghastly – but is a diversion from this political tragedy taking place in the USA right now.

    • mbh12 says:

Her style is so boring and downright bad at times.
I never understood the hype on her clothes they are so dull.

The slit was too high I agree but Kate loves attention drawn to her thighs and crotch for some reason. LOL

  21. ReineDidon says:

Another day another off white-creamy-lacy-straight-line-dress. Ugh…

    • Tourmaline says:

Right? This is an echo of at least two other new white lace dresses she’s worn just since June

At least she didn’t go with nude or black accessories, the dress was relatively inexpensive (compared to say, her many lace D&G frocks) and it supports a young designer.

  22. Sharon Lea says:

All of her white dresses blend together in a way for me. If she went for the thigh high slit in the skirt, why not pull it all together with a sexy shoe? Or a different high heeled shoe.

Its good to see a member of the royal family, aside from Camilla & the Duchess of Kent, pet a cat since we know they are generally dog lovers.

  23. Starlight says:

The biggest faux pas in my view was the black shoes and another new outfit how many outfits does she need when she could easily trot out one of her short black lace numbers with the black shoes and her comforter clutch. I think she is still stuck in the hangover of that bridesmaid dress she wore at Unle Garys wedding when she was a teenager.

    • graymatters says:

The shoes aren’t black. They’re a burgundy red and, imo, match the clutch and poppy pin pretty well. They’d (all three) look better for a daytime event, but I’m okay with them here. Sandals in November aren’t always a great idea.

      • bluhare says:

There are lots of strappy closed toe evening shoes. Or even a silver, gold, or bronze shiny pump.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

I disagree, silver/gold strappy dress sandals would have looked great with the dress or even a nice pair of peep toes.

      • graymatters says:

Sandals would have looked good with this dress — in May. And strappy, closed toe pumps would have been great for this event and maybe bridged the gap between a May dress for a November event. Peep toes are also a great idea, but I’ve only seen Kate wear them with hose, and even for a hose-loving girl like myself, that’s a no-no. I love metallic as a neutral. She could have upped her clutch game with that, as well. As I said, though, the burgundy suede pumps were… okay. Better than black, anyway.

      • Tough Cookie says:

“Sandals in November aren’t always a great idea.” ROFL…..this is Katie Bucket we’re talking about. We don’t have to worry about great ideas.

      • Starlight says:

Oh yes should have looked at that in more detail – good old cream and burgundy match – still don’t think the dress colour is appropriate for November when the shops are full of green, burgundy and grey

  24. Cerys says:

Dull and drab outfit. Her hair looked drab too. I’m sure she must have paid a lot to get it styled beforehand. She should ask for her money back.
The thigh split would be nice on a celeb not a member of the royal family. The twitterazzi are speculating that it was intentional and designed to draw some attention away from Meghan Markle. We know, of course, that The Flasher would never resort to such stunts as she despises publicity. Lol
However I did feel sorry for her too. The DM had photos of her sitting alone in the cinema. She looked like a little lost child and unsure of what to do.

    • Kitty says:

Basically if Harry married Meghan or a women of color, Kate is finished with the media. Tehya re giving Meghan more attention.

    • Tough Cookie says:

oh boo-hoo….a little lost child indeed. I don’t feel sorry for her at all. She’s had YEARS at this job, she’s not a child, she’s a grown woman heading into middle age. A very comfortable middle age!!

    • Kitty says:

@mbh12, exactly!!!!!! I wonder what the monarchy would do then?

  25. TyrantDestroyed says:

That cat with the tie is everything! I love orange tabby cats and of course I will be watching the movie since the book that inspired it was very moving.

As per the dress, I hate to say it but it does look better in Paris Hilton at least she has a better posture, her hair was styled appropriately for a night gala and except by the white shoes I feel that Paris accessorized it better and the most important part: as thirsty as Paris Hilton seems to be, she managed not to flash anybody while wearing it.

  26. Beatrice says:

The cat looks more stylish than the Duchess!

  27. Yolanda says:

I had a look at the photos on Daily Mail and she is frightenly thin. Doesn’t William or her family worry about her at all??

    • Sophie says:

And why don’t the media ever comment on how thin she has gotten? She looks very unhealthy.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

They would get universally slammed for body shamming if anything negatively was printed about her weight.

As for said weight, Willy likes his women very thin. All his ex’s have been very slender.

      • graymatters says:

Maybe that’s why we see so much thigh. Her quads are well-developed, so the obvious muscle tone there might be meant to distract from the apparent frailty of her upper body.

      • Yolanda says:

If she’s starving herself for William then I feel genuinely sorry for her. To be that insecure about yourself must be a hell to live

      • Yolanda says:

        Sophie,

Unless someone has paid them to keep quiet about Kate’s weight problems..?

      • mbh12 says:

Shhhh We are not suppose to notice. We are told by the UK Press that she looks stunning and that is all and no one is suppose to notice that she is getting so thin.

The UK Press will not ask questions because they will be banished from the Cambridge press outings.

    • Nic919 says:

When you compare Paris Hilton to Kate in the same dress and note that Kate is floating in the dress, it is obvious she has got issues. It’s not like Paris Hilton isn’t thin herself but Paris fills out the top and has some semblance of hips.

The UK press always like to say she is stunning, but her extreme thinness and the press pretending it’s not obvious really does a disservice to the young girls who see her and think this is normal or healthy.

      • mbh12 says:

Look at the old photos of Kate next to Nicole Kidman during the LA visit, it’s amazing how thin Kate must be. Now she has gotten even thinner.

    • MinnFinn says:

Kate’s gaunt physique is normal for aristos her age which is why Willy doesn’t notice.

    • Natalie S says:

People get slammed for bringing it up.

There are good points to be made for both sides:
On the one hand, Kate is praised as the epitome of what it means to be “classy,” and the way she looks is a huge part of that. Considering that, I feel, she almost certainly has disordered eating and exercise behaviors, the way she is represented by the media is a bad example for girls and women.

On the other hand, eating and exercises disorders are illnesses. It’s a cold thing to do to publicly call Kate out in the media and put scrutiny on her in a way that could harm her own recovery. She may be rich and famous but she’s still a person and deserves the basic courtesies we would all want for ourselves.

  28. CityGirl says:

    I love the shoes!
    That’s all I got

  29. gen says:

    What an horrible dress!

  30. perplexed says:

The dress looks matronly until you see the thigh split. So confusing.

  31. Citresse says:

It looks like a top and skirt- two separates…. not a good look. Perhaps in a dark navy tone it would look better considering we’re in Nov.
The hair is really boring for an evening glamour engagement.

  32. cindyp says:

Just awful, the hair, the tailoring, the shoes, the ridiculous slit. Can’t believe I’m saying this but Paris looked nice. Why does everything look cheap on Kate?

  33. Lorelai says:

I cannot understand a thing she says in that video. How has she not noticed how insane and OTT this faux accent is??

  34. Ghoulish_moose says:

It looked waaay better on Paris. How does Kate do that to clothes?? I guess she’s just boring in general.

    • Citresse says:

Yes, if you see the DM article, especially the photos comparing Kate to Paris, you’ll see posture is the big difference. Paris has excellent posture compared to Kate. Kate is the hunchback of Notre-Dame. Kate carries herself like a person with a chronic back ailment. It really affects the way her clothes fit and falls upon her body giving the “cheap” look, or sometimes the “I haven’t finished getting ready look” Kate often conveys. The posture, walking, Kate’s hair, Kate’s public speaking, Kate’s make-up, Kate’s style… (um, I guess everything about her!), all needs a major overhaul. Diana studied dancing, especially ballet, so she knew how to carry herself well. Kate was involved in sports so you would think her posture would be better but it isn’t. Kate has decided public speaking is not an area she wants to improve so as far as the major overhaul…doubtful it’ll happen. I think what we’ve seen from her since she married William, well, I guess the bottom line is: this is as good as it gets.

  35. Kloops says:

I don’t mind it but it needs to be tailored along the arms and torso. It looks a little bulky and with that pattern it would look so much nicer if the fit was more structured. I also don’t think her hair should be loose. A winter white dress in November accessorized in poppy red calls for a less summery hair style, IMO.

  36. MinnFinn says:

I would style her with a wreath of daisies in her hair and a bottle of Coca-Cola.

Seriously though, Harry’s current love or his ex Chevrolet (aka Cressida) would rock that dress.

Kate flashing her legs runs in the family and I predict it will continue for at least another 20 years. This photo of Carole supports my claim. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_skjd0V6DDJ0/TMnODvpQG1I/AAAAAAAAADc/5oLS9iHuC2g/s640/carol4-1.jpg

    • Yolanda says:

If you have no other talents, you can always show off your body to get what you want – the Middleton women’s family motto

  37. Milla says:

The dress is actually quite nice, it’s the wearer who makes it look dull.

If I was a designer, I wouldn’t want Kate to represent my brand no matter how much free press I’d get.

  38. A says:

I liked the outfit. It had a red carpet glam to it, which is what I guess she was going for. Plus the accessories matched with the brooch, so that was also nice. And I dunno, I figured that the thigh-slit was pretty tame given some of the other stuff we’ve seen her in lol.

  39. detritus says:

Kate ought to talk to Paris about where to find a good tailor.
