Donatella Versace: Gay, male designers ‘design for the woman they want to be’

When I first read these Donatella Versace headlines, I thought she was conflating homosexuality with transgenderism and I thought “oh, no, not another clueless jackass saying offensive sh-t.” But after I read her comments in context… I think I understand the point she was trying to make, and the point is somewhat valid. Donatella is promoting a new book called Versace (obviously) about her life and work, and she spoke to The Times Magazine. She believes that women make for better fashion designers, especially when compared to gay men. Because, in her mind, gay men are just imagining what they would wear as women, rather than trying to dress actual women, in clothes women want to wear.

Her comments in The Times Magazine are likely to raise a few eyebrows among her peers, but she believes female designers have an advantage because they “understand a woman’s body, a woman’s security and a woman’s attitude”. The 61-year-old added: “I love gay people. My friends are all gay. But some of the designers, when they design for a woman, they design for the woman they want to be, you know. They are thinking of themselves. But themselves and the woman are not the same… I want to design clothes that say, “This is a woman’s clothes.”

“Riccardo Tisci is amazing, so many [male] designers are amazing, too – but sometimes there is this little thing where they need to make themselves a little bit behind who they are, and to look at the real woman.”

[From The Telegraph]

See? In context, I understand the point she was making. I believe she’s saying that gay men have issues seeing and dressing actual women, with actual women’s bodies, in clothes that most women would truly want to wear. Gay men, in Donatella’s mind, are just designing clothes that they would wear if they were women. True or false? I don’t know. Gianni Versace was an incredible designer, but I think Donatella is a great designer too. And there are a lot of gay male designers who – I feel – don’t really give a sh-t about how a woman’s body works. They’re making clothes exclusively for women who are size zero, with no bust or thighs or butt. They’re making clothes for bodies that are all up-and-down, with narrow hips and no defined waist… like a man.

Meanwhile, in the same interview, Donatella told a Donald Trump story. She had rented out Mar-a-Lago (Trump’s Palm Beach property) for a Versace shoot with Madonna, and this is what happened:

“We rented his place, Mar-a-Lago, or whatever it is, in Palm Beach,” says Versace. “So when you’ve rented something, you don’t want the owner to come in. Well, he came in. I mean, we couldn’t get rid of him . . . .”

She reverts to the guttural, emitting a deep, primitive horny-caveman “URGGGH!” as an impression of Trump seeking entry to the set. “No, no,” she says, playing herself. “We are taking a picture inside there.”

“URGGH,” Versace trumps: “Madonna, eh!”

“And he brought us Kentucky Fried Chicken!” she reverts to narration. “I mean, excuse me. Models, you know? It’s fashion!” She laughs. “He was nice, in a way. But he was pushy . . . and Madonna, she was fasting. So, ‘Do you want Kentucky Fried Chicken?’ ‘No, thank you.’ ” She shakes her head in disbelief. Still, no p-ssy grab at least—just Bargain-Bucket breast.

Ugh. This just reminds me that Trump eats a ridiculous amount of fast food, and that his ham-face indicates that his blood pressure is through the roof. Yeah. The next four years are going to be awful.

Was she thooooouuuugh?! ( Voice ascends to dog whistle frequencies)

Also This comment is just … Rub Templery levels pproblematic

    • nnk says:

And as always, any bit of news regarding this woman must follow this banal, execrable and incredibly rude comment: she ruined her face! She used to be gorgeous!! etc.

Maybe some 60+ year old woman has more things to worry about than her face. Besides, I do not see that many women her age with that body. Think about that next time before you choose to be so rude about some middle aged woman who is running one of the few successful privately owned global fashion companies in the world.

If she had been very heavy set, you would not dream of saying something this thoughtless and judgmental.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

I don’t know if she’s a great designer. Versace clothes, along with Cavalli almost always look tacky. I don’t know how Gianni’s clothes looked like, I was 5 when he died.

  3. squeezeo'lime says:

She’s right. Except for maybe Dolce & Gabbana, Zac Posen and a couple of others gay male designers only cater to one body type: stick thin with no breasts, no hips and no waist.

  4. minx says:

    Well, I think she’s right.

  5. Fl girl says:

Models are nothing more than clothes hangers.

    • AG-UK says:

Yeah but that’s the idea.. they don’t want you to see the model they want you to see the clothes.. and if you are a stick nothing will distract you from their vision I suppose.

      • MCraw says:

Which is a ridiculous excuse in itself. Humans are not hangers. Women, even thin women, have curves. For us, as consumers, to accept this excuse is to encourage its negative impact on us as women. How could a woman’s body “take away” from an outfit if it fits her amazingly well? Why not just do fashion shows on hangers with wheels?

They need to do better. Or allow women designers to get the glory that seems to be reserved for the Tom Ford’s of the world.

      • Jackie Lynn says:

…nothing to distract you from their vision…like breasts lol.

I am forever having to use my imagination to decide how something will work on me. And my breasts.

Sometimes I’m wrong. And the clothes go right back.

Seriously, how do other women decide what to buy online? I’m not intending to shame the super-thin. Its just that most women have protruding organs on the upper chest. (for some of us, emphasis on the protruding) 🙂

I would hope for Trump to have a heart attack but that would leave us with Pence. Oh, he’s going to run the country anyway. Back to square 1.

    • Borgqueen says:

Donatella is right. Now to matter at hand, its shocking that someone could be worse than Trump but Pence is.

I am a New Yorker and we are well versed with Trumps lies and shenanigans and very few New Yorkers voted for him. Now he is causing all sorts of trouble in NY bc he wants to stay in NY (and not DC) during his presidency and supposedly he will bc the White House will be going under renovations in the first year of Trump’s presidency.

Trump does not keep his word and in fact, has reneged on some of his presidential campaign promises. New Yorkers are terrified of Trump and the rest of the country will come to that realization. I just dont understand how his son in law and daughter are othordox Jews and Trump wants to appoint an Anti-Semite to his cabinets.

And dont let me get on Giuliani. We New Yorkers despise him. Especially how he did not go to fight for more healthcare funding for the 09/11 First Responders that 16 years later dying of various cancers and terminal diseases. I had heard that Giuliani has the early stages of Alzheimer which is sad before and when Giuliani said on TV that an act of terrorism never occurred the USA under Bush is incredulous to us New Yorkers, that confirmed it for me.

      stepping down off my soapbox.

  7. Rae says:

I think she is spot on.

One of my biggest criticisms of some labels that design women’s clothes, is that they dress women to look like men, designing clothes that suit only very androgynous builds.

  8. Turtle says:

She’s right. And try finding men’s clothes that look halfway decent if you’re a man who is NOT stick-thin with no butt or shoulders or waist. You get almost nothing. There’s a reason why fluffy guys wear board shorts and Hawaiian/bowling shirts all the time.

  9. Loula says:

A dear (gay) friend of mine is a fashion designer, and I’ve tried to explain that none of his clothes would work with a strapless bra, and that no bra just isn’t a flattering option for a lot of us…still not sure he gets it though.

Also I see loads of photos at premiers etc where it’s very obvious that the dresses only work because fake boobs defy gravity. Otherwise, skinny spaghetti straps really shouldn’t be taking the strain. So I get what she’s saying!

  10. Twink says:

Will we ever be free of this orange man!? he’s in every story everywhere. Could you guys at least use pictures of puppies instead of his so we don’t have to see THAT everyday on the homepage? Pretty please…

  11. VegasSchmagus says:

    Trump is a predator……………….with a bucket of greasy chicken………….and teeny-tiny doll hands.

  12. GreenieWeenie says:

think about how the industry is dominated by men. And there is often simply no love for a woman’s body. The world of fashion hates women’s bodies even as it commodifies our bodies for men’s sexuality, whether gay or straight….arrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhh.

  13. Tanakasan says:

What about all the straight male designers?

All I know is that, as a woman, I would never deign to wear that hideous outfit that she is wearing in all these photos, nor would I ever trust someone who dresses like THAT to dress me.

  14. Normandywells says:

all f the best and most famous designers are men. This hideous woman wouldn’t be anywhere without her dead brother-she should learn her place

  15. nnk says:

She is one of the kindest and most courteous people working in that wretch of an industry at that level, and there is no way in hell she said what she said to be rude, condescending, or hurtful. Her brother was a gay male fashion designer and she adored him and his vision.

She is not a mean-spirited judgmental person. Watch a few interviews and documentaries with her and you’ll see what a nice and self-deprecating woman she actually is.

And she is right. Perhaps when she designs for men, she thinks about what she’d want to wear if she were born a man. How is that debatable or disagreeable?

  16. asdf says:

also christian siriano is gay but he doesnt make clothes for androgynous models.

  17. Kate says:

I’m a very curvy, size 8 short woman with a closet full of designer clothes designed almost exclusively by gay men.

Almost nothing from high end female or straight male designers works for me. Versace was my favourite when Gianni was here, but since Donatella took over it’s all tacky bedazzled clothing meant to give the illusion of curves, nothing for actual curves. Chanel actually became significantly more inclusive of different body types after the end of Coco’s reign if you can believe that, same with Lanvin. Anything Stella McCartney or Phoebe Philo is a nightmare if you aren’t stick thin (and even then). McQueen used to be amazing for women, but under Sarah Burton it’s utter garbage even supermodels can’t make look good. Miuccia has really leaned into the preppy figure over the last decade. I absolutely adored Gucci under Tom Ford, but under Frida literally nothing fit over my chest. Carolina Herrera does a much better job of creating fake curves than dressing them, as does Victoria Beckham. DvF is difficult if you have large breasts, way too much cleavage, and not in a flattering way. Even the Rodarte girls, who have very normal shapes, only design for size 0 waifs.

  18. Velvet Elvis says:

Wondering if Donatella has had a little work done lately…she’s looking better than she has in a while.
