Lady Gaga does not want ‘more attention, more fame, more accolades’

Lady Gaga is still around. Many of you might even still like her. I do not. I’ve been over her for years, much to the chagrin of her little monsters. I rolled my eyes at her latest incarnation, the country-pop act who yodels in dive bars and struts around New York in Daisy Dukes. It’s just another façade, another persona, just like the meat-dress and the Mother Monster and the Tony Bennett duet thing. But, that being said, her latest album (Joanne) is a success. So… good for her. *shrug*

Gaga covers the December issue of Harper’s Bazaar to promote Joanne. Many have wondered why Gaga looks so different these days, and I too have found it difficult to pinpoint exactly what she’s changed, especially in these photos. It feels like she got her jaw reshaped, maybe had some subtle eye and nose work done. She does look different, we’re not just imagining that. Anyway, you can read her Bazaar piece here – it’s not an interview or profile. Bazaar let her write an essay about fame, music and what it means to be a woman in today’s society. Some highlights:

On the highs and lows of fame, and what truly matters: “Fame is the best drug that’s ever existed. But once you realize who you are and what you care about, that need for more, more, more just goes away. What matters is that I have a great family, I work hard, I take care of those around me, I provide jobs for people I love very much, and I make music that I hope sends a good message into the world. I turned 30 this year, and I’m a fully formed woman. I have a clear perspective on what I want. That, for me, is success. I want to be somebody who is fighting for what’s true—not for more attention, more fame, more accolades.”

On why she took a step back from the spotlight until now, with the release of her new album Joanne, honoring her aunt who she is named for: “Before I made Joanne, I took some time off… I was able to get off the train of endless work I’d been on, which was quite abusive to my body and my mind, and have some silence and some space around me. I wanted to experience music again the way I did when I was younger, when I just had to make it, instead of worrying what everybody things or being obsessed with things that aren’t important.”

On what it means to be a lady today: “Being a lady today means being a fighter. It means being a survivor. It means letting yourself be vulnerable and acknowledging your shame or that you’re sad or you’re angry. It takes great strength to do that… Health, happiness, love—these are the things that are at the heart of a great lady, I think. That’s the kind of lady I want to be. You know, I never thought I’d say this, but isn’t it time to take off the corsets? As someone who loves them, I think it’s time to take them off.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

It’s not that I disagree with any particular sentiment from Gaga’s essay. What she says is fine and even moving in some passages, especially about the weight of world falling on women’s shoulders. But when I got to the fame section, my eye started twitching. Of all the pop stars in the world, Gaga is going to try to play it like she doesn’t want to be famous, or that she learned she can’t do it for the fame? Mother Monster, please. The only reason she cycled through like five different personas in the span of three years is just because everyone stopped giving a sh-t about her. She will literally do and say anything to get her fame-drug fix, even now.

I would disagree because she is the thirsty of the parched.
She’s such a try hard. The thing that baffles me the most is that she doesn’t need all this. She doesn’t need all the shenaningans and the drama because she is so very talented. She can play instruments too!
Many other female artists would give up anything to have an ounce of her talent but yet, she still wants to perform naked on stage and be outrageous.
    I just don’t get it.

    • poop says:

why does being naked on stage somehow undo her talent?? do you think people are gaga fans right now because she’s naked??? it’s not 2008. let the girl live

      • Betsy says:

I think her point wasn’t that nudity cancels talent; rather that nudity is usually used to hide a lack of talent.

    • Ozzy says:

She’s not that talented even, she’s average at best. She’s an okay singer and pianist who can write a half-decent pop song when given a lot of help from more talented people. She’s always needed the crazy antics to stand out from all the other okay pop tarts. She’s just more delusional than the others.

  2. Slowsnow says:

If dressed down, I wouldn’t recognize her in the street. She may have changed something, but I always had that impression. That’s probably why she resorts to those personas. Because there is nothing striking about her in any way (physical or creative). Her songs are as good and as bad as any other pop star’s. She just has a lot of hustle, even (and more desperately) when she is meta-hustling such as here.

  3. RussianBlueCat says:

So does that mean if she is nominated for an Oscar for example she would ask to be taken out of consideration or if she won refuse to accept it? Sure Jan…
Gaga wants to be one of the few performers to achieve EGOT. The next time she is nominated for anything she should be reminded about this magazine interview

  4. Green Is Good says:

    Sure, Jan.

  5. ElleBee says:

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight….So the biggest attention whore in recent history doesn’t want/like attention?

    Ugh Ok.

  6. smd says:

However, I like the current look? Less odd than before it seems more natural? Eh, if she can advocate for more disenfranchised right now who desperately need it she might win me back. We need some younger, dare I say pop stars (?) to publicy take on the upcoming regime and encourage young people to become more politically active. Gaga wants to rally again the machine of injustices already starting in a real way, then I’m back. But it has to be real.

  7. Maria T. says:

Nose job, weird lips and most likely more. She’s got the Jessica Simpson open mouth thing going on.

    • Redgrl says:

@maria T – the open mouth thing is originally from Keira Knightley – she always has her mouth hanging open in pictures!

      • iseepinkelefants says:

As someone who suffers from open mouth syndrome that can’t always be helped. I have Scarlett Johansson lips. Recently a guy asked me do you pose like that on purpose or do your lips always have that sexy open mouth thing and I realized no my lips are just too big and pouty, my mouth naturally stays like that. I don’t notice it. Or try to pose like that.

As for Gaga what hasn’t she had done? She looks different but who can tell anymore what with all of the characters she plays.

    • Jasmine says:

Or it could be just photoshop.

  8. Ai says:

Just going to say it: I still enjoy her music and don’t mind her doing whatever she wants in terms of style or what ever persona she wants to adopt as long as it is not ill intended, harmless etc. Many pop stars have evolving looks and style and I just seeing it she is on her own type of journey etc.

  9. hey-ya says:

…maybe she recognised she was on a speeding train to mental breakdown & drug dependency & decided to slow down or got fed up of not controlling her own output…either way I applaud her for trying to find her own way…trying different artistic outlets…she isnt really the person who sang” Lets Dance”…you go Gaga..

  10. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

She is a victim of her own ego – she can sing but she has always needed the crazy antics to stay relevant and in the limelight. She gets an award of TV acting and thinks she can win an Oscar – she isn’t that great an actress, passable but not great.

  11. akilah says:

I’m a long term fan, but she is super super fame oriented. Maybe she’s trying to project a more ice queen-ish or enigmatic persona for her next project? Also, definitely had some major work done over the years. More power to her if she wants it and it makes her feel better, although I’d stop soon if I were her or she’ll lose those strong features that make her so memorable.

  12. Chloeee says:

Meh I thought the first incarnation of Gaga was far more insufferable. I have to say I’m impressed with her acting chops. She easily rises above some of the other actors in American Horror Story (for whatever that’s worth).

  13. lizzie says:

    she’s morphing into greta gerwig

  14. MissMerry says:

her face is an enigma. i can’t place whats different, but it keeps changing.

it’s almost alien, changing in subtle ways but ways that make you go ‘wait…she looks different right?’… but it doesn’t change drastically enough to be able to pinpoint.

She’s always very dewey and especially her lips, they always looked recently-filled or re-shaped.

She glows, i don’t think she looks bad, but there is no way it’s just makeup or photographic angles…

  15. girl bye says:

    she is 35 if she’s a day
she was in same class at sacred heart as Paris Hilton.
she has had several nose jobs, breasts, cheek implants, loads of fillers,
so deeply insecure and seeking love through applause and accolades

  16. MC2 says:

I wonder how she feels about her country persona now that the cowboys are running the show?
Was she pandering to the crap in America right now with her rodeo & smoking bit?
I would be taking off my ten gallon hat & finding a new persona today, Gaga.

  17. truthteller says:

the writer of this article is nasty

  18. Amanda DG says:

I love most of her music and Joanne is a fantastic album, but I can’t deal when she gets on her high horse in interviews. So…I just stick to the music.

  19. krtmom says:

She may be talented but she tries too hard to be noticed and should shut her big mouth except when she’s singing!
