Susan Sarandon: My PR person made up a rumor I was fighting with Julia Roberts

This story is a little bizarre to me, mostly because of what is not being said. For a little background, in 1998, Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts made the movie Stepmom, in which Julia played a woman married to Susan’s ex-husband, played by Ed Harris *moment of gratuitous sighing to express Ed Harris devotion*. Without getting too involved in retelling the story, the two ladies were not besties for most of the film. Outside of the actual movie, there were stories for years that Susan and Julia did not get along. They were both quoted in Entertainment Weekly at the time calling it ridiculous to presume that two lead actress can’t get along. Julia famously said, “Actually, Susan and I were kinda hoping that people would say we were f—ing. Now that’s delicious cocktail-party fodder. But this? Boring.”

Cut to modern day when Susan is appearing in Ryan Murphy’s Feud, where she plays Bette Davis feuding with Jessica Lange’s Joan Crawford on the set of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. On Sunday, Susan was live tweeting during the show and she posted this:

I don’t think this is shocking – the fact that women are often reduced to petty, jealous harridans or the fact that Susan ripped off Julia’s punchline. Still, people are grossly fascinated by the idea of women fighting so I don’t ever mind someone talking about it. A few tweets later, Susan dropped this bombshell:

I feel like there is much more that can be said here. I get they were on the topic of how these feud rumors are perpetuated, but can we assume this is her “former” PR person or does she still employ this person? And when did she find this out? Has she been sitting on this information? Or did she, completely coincidentally, learn of this scandalous bit of gossip when her show about the same topic was broadcasting?

I suppose I could be fair and say that perhaps Susan did know this information for a while but didn’t think anyone would be interested in it and remembered it during the topic’s discussion Sunday. I could do that but I don’t wants to give her too much credit.

I believe that Susan and Julia didn’t fight because if they did they would likely admit it. Those two aren’t exactly people-pleasing, shrinking violets. It is sad, though, that Susan’s PR went (presumably) behind her back to generate press for her movie by feeding into this stagnant stereotype of women not able to peacefully co-exist. The story is making the rounds so I’m sure Susan will elaborate further on it. I imagine these days she would like to talk about anything other than her opinions about the last election.

    That’s Hollyweird for you.

  2. Pedro45 says:

Strange how Julia Roberts just became less annoying to me. Call it the Susan Sarandon Effect.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      +1,000

      And Susan, you’re still cancelled.

    • Nan says:

Lol!! So hard to choose, they both come off so annoyingly smug. (re: this post, though, Susan & Julia get along great. There isn’t any discord and never was – I won’t say how I know but Google Julia’s wedding with Lyle to see that they’ve always been close)

  3. Runcmc says:

Unfortunately for Susan, she was so loud and stupid before and since the election that I can no longer smile at a fun silly story like this. Go away, Susan

I’m very sure this kind of mess goes on. I’m also sure that PR people make up lies, gossip and scandalous stories about other celebrities to deflect from what their clients are doing. I have seen that. You see gossip stories or “blind items” about very popular celebrities. Then if you are mindful somewhere down the line you will see some story that is really about someone else. I think these things are damaging. They are just wrong.

  5. michelle says:

Think a lot of publicists do this. Any press is good press when hype is concerned!

  6. Tate says:

I would like to not hear about SS anymore.

  7. Ms.Lib says:

That strip outfit is BUTT UGLY! What is she thinking???
    I am enjoying Feud.

  8. Bex says:

I can definitely believe this. I once heard of a PR person who planted a blind item, which got quite a lot of traction, about their client behaving pretty scandalously to make them seem more ‘interesting’. It wasn’t true (or at least it was massively exaggerated) and the client had no idea. If Susan’s story is true, it’s a real shame that the publicist chose the ‘catfighting women’ route.

  9. Mia4s says:

Too bad I can no longer stand her over privileged, out of touch, rich ass, or I might enjoy this story.

The entertainment press is deeply sexist and misogynist but unfortunately the public eats these stories up. At least we are getting some stories about The Rock and Vin Diesel being bitchy to each other (team Dwayne by the way).

  10. Lolo86lf says:

Susan Sarandon really screwed up this past election by not supporting Hillary Clinton which as it turned out it helped DT win the election. Although I really liked her as an actress, I feel let down by her.

    • MaybeTomorrow says:

Nope. Not even close to accurate. HRC lost because of the number of registered non voters who didn’t bother. Statistics show the nonvoters leaned democrat and were disproportionately young and of color.

Blaming Susan is dumb. Instead blame a lackluster candidate who didn’t inspire enough voting in what should have been her core support group.

      • Miss Grace Jones says:

Oh so we’re blaming disenfranchised people of color for Trump and not racist whites who actually voted for him, like the 53 percent of white women who voted for him and we’re not going to bring up the fact that a third of black men in Florida alone are unable to vote because of racist drug or other convictions?
        K.

      • MaybeTomorrow says:

It’s a fact about who didn’t vote. The number of registered voters who turned out for obama but not HRC is about 5 million. Young people and those of color. Sorry it doesn’t jibe with your narrative of blame. Besides — How do we know they didn’t vote out of racism against HRC (or Trump ) anyway?😏

      • MaybeTomorrow says:

And for the record…..I laid blame at the feet of a lackluster candidate who didn’t inspire enough voting in what should have been two core support groups. Reading comprehension is key.

      • Miss Grace Jones says:

The narrative and burden of blame lies on the white people who came out in huge numbers inspired by racism sis. Sorry you don’t want to accept that years of racism implemented by whites is to blame for any thing including nonvoters so you can assuage your own discomfort.

      • MaybeTomorrow says:

Various analysts came to the conclusion I posted.

        https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/registered-voters-who-stayed-home-probably-cost-clinton-the-election/

I’ll take responsibility for my own choices and behaviors — not those you ascribe to me on the basis of knowing nothing about me but assuming whatever you choose to fit your story. Sorry — I don’t guilt that easily at internet strangers posting on celebrity websites.

      • Kimble says:

This! We still can’t accept we had a shite candidate? It was Susan Sarandon’s fault? I pity us in 2020. Perhaps HRC will give it another go lol?

  11. Darkladi says:

Thank you for acknowledging the quiet long term love many of us feel for Ed Harris

  12. Adrien says:

No1curr. It was a 20 year old movie. The rumor wasn’t even that epic.

I enjoy Feud, btw. I really wish Susan would just stop with her political comments before I completely cancel her.

    • Spiderpig says:

Yes I’m sure her main priority in the battle against the rising forces of the alt.right is stopping some random bloke on a forum from “cancelling” her.

      • Lola says:

Serious? She is part of the alt.right as she helped Trump get elected. She is no friend of the left, or even centre, that is for sure!

  13. Jeesie says:

Why is it a problem that she was ‘sitting on’ this information. It was a totally forgettable movie and a fairly mild tabloid rumour…was she supposed to call a press conference to discuss something no one cares about anymore when she found out months/years later?

She’s brought it up now because she has a reason to now. I get that everyone’s decided she’s evil incarnate (while cooing over war criminals like GWB), but not everything little thing she does needs to be overanalysed and attacked.

  14. Mata says:

My main reaction to this: Meh. They’re both assholes.

  15. Spiderpig says:

    This happens All. The. Time.

  16. chick b. says:

I’m not sure why none of the articles about this don’t mention that the two were friends for a time before the film. Sarandon was at Roberts’ first wedding. I mean, unless it was a PR stunt.

    • Keaton says:

That’s right! I think Susan was perhaps even Julia’s main attendant at her wedding to Lyle Lovett? Julia was a real star back then. She had box office power and generated alot of tabloid fodder before the days of social media and the Brangelina scandal. As a kid growing up I remember her on People magazine covers all the time.

Also, i love Ed Harris. There’s something very sexy about that guy.

  17. Maryanne says:

walking around in those ridiculous outfits spouting her opinions like anyone cares … times up SS, you can go away now

  18. serena says:

I really really loved that movie!!

  19. Lucy says:

That movie is so damn sad. I watch it whenever it’s on.

  20. NotSoSocialButterfy says:

Here, Susan, have a glass of water. You seem so thirsty.

  21. Beth says:

Julia Roberts met Lyle Lovett through Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, so I’m guessing they don’t hate each other.

  22. Bridget says:

It’s takes a lot for me to be soured on someone because of their personal choices (as long as it’s nothing criminal). But Sarandon was so obnoxious, such a loudmouth know it all, that I just can’t with her.
