Everyone keeps saying this, but it’s totally true: Donald Bigly Trump was the best thing to ever happen to George W. Bush’s legacy. We’re not even 100 days into the Trump Administration (100 Days of Bigly) and there are already hundreds of hot-takes, think-pieces and policy reassessments of the W. Bush administration and of Bush’s presidency. Personally, I WISH we were dealing with President Bush again. I loathed the man when he was in office, but there’s something about Emperor Bigly that makes me all nostalgic for Dubya. Anyway, Jenna Bush Hager works for NBC and she loves giving interviews about her family. She spoke to People Magazine about how she believes her dad is now and has always been a feminist. Hm.
When it comes to raising her daughters Poppy, 20 months, and Mila, 4, Jenna Bush Hager says she learned from the best: Her dad, former president George W. Bush and mom Laura Bush.
“I think the thing that my parents did so well and might surprise people, although I don’t know why, is that they really wanted us to be curious, independent thinkers,” the Today correspondent tells PEOPLE. “They wanted to raise us to have our own views and to be able to articulate them.” She says that as kids, she and her twin sister Barbara Pierce Bush “always felt sorry for the boys in her class because our dad led us to believe that we were the smartest, most capable kids out there,” she says.
“People laugh at this, but I think my dad was a feminist. He showed us that we could be whatever we wanted to be. I want my girls to feel that way. I want them to feel strong and capable and feel like they can conquer the world.”
Though bringing her daughters up in New York City might seem worlds away from the small town of Midland, Texas, where she grew up, she says that her goal as a mother doesn’t differ. “The most important thing is to raise loving humans,” she says.
“Her teacher said that Mila’s really empathetic and that when somebody in her class feels sad, she feels sad, and when somebody’s happy, she feels happy,” Bush Hager says. “Like I’m going to do right now, I broke into tears because, to me, that’s what’s most important is to raise really kind girls — and I’m so happy my girls are kind.”
I’m not so nostalgia-drunk about Dubya where I can suddenly claim that Bush was any kind of feminist. Feminism should not be defined as “simply not hating women” or “simply not assaulting women constantly.” If you’re defining feminism that way, then sure, Dubya was a feminist. Compared to Emperor Bigly, Dubya is a supremely woke feminist. But let’s not kid ourselves – Bush did a lot of sh-t to undermine women’s rights across the board. He loved his wife, he adored his daughters, he respected his female colleagues and he didn’t hate women at all. But he’s not a feminist.

Yeah, there’s definitely a difference between not being a mysognist and being an actual feminist.
Pink wrote, about Bush:
“What kind of father would take his own daughter’s rights away? What kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?”
“Yeah, there’s definitely a difference between not being a misogynist and being an actual feminist.”
Ding ding ding
Bush is not a misogynist but he’s far from a feminist.
It’s horrifying that we’ve sunk so low that we (we as in the US electorate) voted an openly misogynist, POTUS. Sickening. I know people will say we had misogynists in the past and I’m sure we did. But I think it’s possible to NOT be a misogynist and still advocate misogynistic policies. Like if the person in charge is ignorant or coldly strategic. But truthfully, that doesn’t make the non-misogynist better. They’re still advocating harmful policies. I feel like Bush falls in that category.
The misogynists of the past did at least deny and try to hide that they were misogynists. The current misogynist in office seems to be proud of treating women like f***me*t.
I kind of adore that picture of Michelle hugging George.
For all those people who think that Bush was not that bad. Remember the Iraq War, people. Remember that war.
Exactly
Iraq and Afganisthan as well
An entire chain reaction of leaving people destitute, homeless, nothing to live for and consequently rise of terrorist activities and hate crime world wide was the direct consequence of his wrong decision
Let’s not forget that ISIS is the reincarnation of the Baathist regime Bush allegedly overthrew. Starting a war under false pretenses to exact revenge for a failed assassination attempt on your father is a crime against humanity. My opinion of Bush will never, ever soften.
Iraq
Katrina
9/11
Economic collapse
Anti-gay rights
Pro torture
And one of legacies of the Iraq war is this: more than half of the Federal US budget is spent on war/military things. The US spends more money on war/military things than the rest of the world together???
And of course that money, that is spent on war/military can not be spent on US schools and not on US infrastructure and on on US science and so on.
So Bush’s legacy is still a huge financial burden on the US.
To clarify: I wouldn’t deny them soldiers or veterans their money. But the military-industrial complex is making a HUGE profit out of the federal military budget.
Yes SIs, People like Me Will LAUGH AND CACKLE in Full BULLSWANKY MODE
Jenna, your father does not think that women have the right to make a choice about their own bodies. So much so, that he appointed Supreme Court justices who will happily take that right away.
So kindly STFU about your daddy being a feminist.
Well I think behind closed doors he was pro choice remember he tried to appoint the possibily moderate Harriet Meirs. That’s all I give him he probably didn’t buy into his rhetoric but he catered to them and in some way s that’s worse.
He wasn’t smart enough to organise a majority for the best solution. And that is very bad in a president. Giving in because the worse solution has more support.
You really have to congratuale Obama for creating Obamacare despite the big opposition he faced.
Um, no. He was and is a POS. Trump doesn’t tone it down.
Nope, absolutely not a feminist. Sit down and shut it about this POS. Let’s not kid ourselves, George W. was terrible.
Yeah, that word does not mean what she thinks it means. Whether you agree or disagree with abortion or contraception for yourself, as a feminist you should always believe that a woman is the only person who can decide what is best for her body. Bush and Vice-President Satan and the Rethugs didn’t believe that and worked hard to stop progress in the women’s rights movement.
Her stories about her father are cute, warm, and seem genuine. but then I remember what her father authorized and I have to pause.
YES!!!
Yes to everything you wrote and one addition:
Jenna Bush knows exactly what the word feminist means and why it doesn’t apply to her father and why she uses it nevertheless. She is one of those women who promotes a president whose policies hurt women on the back of feminists!!! It is a bit like declaring a wolf to be a sheep’s best guardian protector.
ARE YOU PEOPLE INSANE? Circumventing the constitution via Guantanamo bay? Defunding planned parenthood? Weapons of mass destruction? John Roberts? Water boarding? Sub prime lending?
Enough with the white-washing. Trump = W + Racism. And, W was racist. Google Hurricane Katrina.
THANK you. I couldn’t organize my thoughts (I commented below) but yeah. Those are some pretty good key words. Good god. Let’s not start with the revisionism just yet.
Thank you! He’s a war criminal. His legacy is torture and murder and the erosion of basic human rights. Maybe if people had revolted back then and put him in jail for deceiving his citizens in order to start an unjust war we wouldn’t be in a situation where an idiot like Trump thinks he can just do whatever he likes.
I have no idea why so many’s people default when presented with a horrific situation is to wish for a slightly less horrific time. Aim higher people!
This is exhibit A to the argument that the word “feminism” has lost all meaning. These privileged, wealthy women view feminism on personal terms, ie “This man likes me, and I am a woman, so he is a feminist.” Or “Taylor Swift has a gang of wealthy mostly white female friends she parades around, so she is a feminist” or “Lena Dunham wears a Marc Jacobs sweater with the word ‘Feminist’ on it so she must be one.” Feminism means support of policies that help ALL women – women who are poor, women who are disenfranchised. It is not a feminist victory when a woman joins a corporate board, if that corporation doesn’t pay or promote its lower paid women. It is not a feminist victory that George Bush thinks his daughters are smart, when his administration did so much to retard women’s rights, never mind invading and ruining another country that resulted in already poor women with even less.
Amen. Everything you said I completely and 100% agree with.
Exactly – it’s been watered down so much in the past few years to the point where it’s losing all meaning. It’s a political movement, not a PR tool/”empowering” slogan.
Totally agree. I have no doubt that GWB loves and respects his daughters. They seem to have grown up to be successful, professional, decent people. That doesn’t make him a feminist though. That makes him a good father. You’ve got to extend the same respect to ALL women. Not just those in your circle of privilege.
Beautifully said!
Wait, what? It’s all a bit foggy and clouded because the overwhelming issue of the Bush years is Iraq. Yes? Iraq and the destabilizing of the entire region, ISIS and all. Thanks, Bush.
So I’m having a hard time remembering but LGBT rights were a pretty big issue “back then”. Like it’s 30 years ago. The Republicans were pretty clear on that front. And women’s rights weren’t exactly a championed cause of theirs either. Do we suddenly think that Dick Cheney et al. were good for women??? Wasn’t the foundation for the rhetoric and venom spewed during the Obama years laid during the Bush era? Do the names Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove not ring a bell? They may not have gone on Fox News and yelled “Death to sluts!” but the political climate and the “corporations are people” sh*t (among many many other things) was their long game. ALL of it has been crappy for women. And it has culminated in that orange disaster.
I know that in comparison, Bush seems almost likeable. But WHO THE EFF WOULDN’T??? Please, let’s not get too nostalgic.
Thank you!!!
When I hear any men or women deny women rights over their bodies I don’t think of feminism. Both Bush presidents were at least more “pleasant” than Trump but when I see Bush Junior I think of Gore and how differently the world would gone.
What well and truly p$ssed me off is that Democrats did not abolish the electoral college when they had the super majority under Obama. After what happened with Gore, you think they would have learned.
Agreed, we had our eye off the ball.
Yes, Al Gore and HRC will always be that giant ‘what if?’. And they didn’t even lose the election proper. Sigh. I don’t think that’s something I will ever get over.
@Megan, co-sign. That was a wasted opportunity.
Global Gag Order.
Bush signed the Global Gag Order as his first act as President. The Global Gag Order, aka “Mexico City Rule,” kills women.
He also opposed the Lilly Ledbetter equal pay act.
There’s no cleaning up that record, Jenna. You’re father was NO feminist
Thank you!!!
That’s what I was going to say, I mean, Jenna, of course he is a feminist seeing as he instatet the global gag order! So I guess in her job you can just ever say stuff and nobody ever holds ou accountable for it?
Compared to trump? Yes. Yes he is.
Improving Daddy Dubbaju’s image after him leaving office and country both being in a worse state than before?
I am not laughing. The bar was so low for GW it was appalling. We would not have Tr*mp if we had not had GW and his shady-as-hell election “win.” It has been a race to the bottom ever since, and we are all suffering because of it.
No, absolutely not Jenna. I was actually starting to like you but you are still clearly clueless. I don’t miss Bush; he is and will always be trash.
“That was some weird shit.” is my favorite W quote. That’s what he said to Michele Obama right after Trump finished his inaugural speech.
Several lip readers confirmed it and somehow it was reported by iirc AP or some other major outlet.
