Selena Gomez: ‘I would have all of the same issues’ if I wasn’t famous

We Day California 2017
Selena Gomez did an extensive interview with Business of Fashion to promote her collaboration with Coach, out now. (As a side note, Selena’s bags with Coach aren’t much of a departure from their classic collection and are disappointing to me. I was expecting more innovative designs. She just has a couple of different wristlets, some cute key charms, and a satchel/carryall that looks like so many other purses. I was expecting more boho and/or young-looking pieces, like patchwork or fringe purses, but Coach already has those.)

Getting back to the interview, I was surprised by how much Selena opened up to BoF, especially considering that it was conducted over Facetime. The interviewer, Imran Amed, did his homework on Selena and he reached the same conclusion that so many of us have – that her appeal lies in her vulnerability and in her quest to be true to herself and with her fans. That really shines through here, and I would suggest that you read whole piece if you’re interested. It’s very long and is a deep dive into her thought process and motivations. Here are some highlights and it’s worth noting that this interview was conducted before Selena revealed that she’d had a kidney transplant earlier this summer.

“What do you think is the biggest challenge for your generation?”
The biggest challenge is separating what you see on your phone from what is your life. A lot of young girls are getting involved with things that I didn’t even know about, quicker… I see a disconnect from real life connections to people, and that makes me a little worried. I do think social media is an amazing way to stay connected, to learn more things about what’s going outside your little bubble, but sometimes I think it’s too much information.

“What are the key things that make your generation different — apart from social media and technology?”
There’s more freedom in expression, not just through social media, but through fashion, and the ability to say things and be vocal about how you’re feeling, maybe your sexuality or your personality. It’s become a little more open for conversation.

Her mom told her to be humble from a young age
[My mom] said, “This entire industry is going to tell you you’re perfect and you’re great, and I’m going to tell you that you’re no better or bigger than anyone. You are the person that you are, and you are very lucky.” That’s something that’s always been replaying in my head. She just taught me to be kind, and that’s about understanding where I’m at. But it got harder the older I was getting. I was actually more confident when I was younger than I am now.

She came to understand that show business can be slimy
When I got older, I started to become exposed to the truth behind some stuff and that’s when it flipped a little bit. I realised that, “Oh this is actually really hard, and kind of slimy in certain areas,” and I didn’t realise that certain people wanted certain things from me. My confidence went through a lot with that.

On if she would have the same issues as a non-famous person
No, I think I would have all of the same issues. I think mine are amplified just a little bit only because of the public aspect, but I do think they’re very similar. When it comes to the internal stuff — the insecurities, growing up, friendships, family, mental health, all of that stuff.

“You’re back in the spotlight again, after having gone through that very difficult period. What tools do you use now to cope so that you don’t fall back into that place?”
Balance the power of saying no and self-care. I have to take care of myself and not feel guilty about it. I will say no when I need to say no, and I will make sure that I will not overdo everything because I feel like if I don’t accept everything that’s happening then maybe it seems like I’m ungrateful, or I’m not doing enough. I just have to take care of myself. Therapy, faith, hard work, kindness. That’s it.

There’s so much more about her conflicted feelings about social media, how she’s both fascinated and repelled by it (a lot of us can relate) and how she feels like she would have the same issues and problems she’s having as a non-famous person. And that’s why Selena is considered the face of the millennials. She doesn’t just give soundbytes or calculated revelations about her life, she opens up on a level that makes it sound like she’s confiding in a best friend. In turn some fans consider her one.

Here’s Selena’s new puppy, she got it with The Weeknd.

Her puppy is beautiful, I love King Charles spaniels …

  2. Shijel says:

She wouldn’t have a coke problem I bet. I like her though, a lot, I definitely think that she’s loads less vapid than so many of her peers. That’s a cute-ass dog too.

  3. Bxhal says:

She had a kidney transplant and all one can think to comment is “She wouldn’t have a Coke problem I bet”. Wow.

I like what she said about remaining humble. That said, it’s not hard to stay humble when you have no discernible talent to speak of. She doesn’t exactly live up to the beauty standards of Hollywood, so she probably can’t just cruise by on looks either. I don’t really understand her appeal or fame, as her songs and acting lack charisma, and she can’t model. Very average girl. She seems nice/sweet though. She just doesn’t seem cut out for this business. Hopefully this lifestyle doesn’t chew her up and spit her out.

Really? I think that her looks is her biggest asset. She is not a good actress or singer or dancer. But she is really beautiful. That and her ability to attach herself to the person of the moment ( Justin and Taylor took her from being Disney famous to being famous famous) is what keeps her in the spotlight.

I think she’s very media savy, in courting fame while simultaniously pretending to hate it.

Having said that, I feel a great deal of symphaty for her because of her health.

I like her. I’ve always thought she had a decent head on her shoulders for the most part. Most people have dated someone (or many someones) who weren’t great for them, so I can’t hold the Bieber years against her.

She’s gone through so much with her health… and had so many rehab/addiction rumors being spread during that time. I wouldn’t be surprised if a young person in hollywood has at least dabbled in substances… but I don’t think she’s stupid enough to really do damage to her body in that way – considering what she’s dealing with from Lupus.

Nobody picks Lupus as an excuse. That’s not the kind of disease that you can BS, and it’s certainly not some sort of fad. I feel so angry for her that people were doubting that for so long… and on top of it, she’s having a hard enough time with it that she’s already needed a kidney replacement. She seems to have a relatively aggressive level of symptoms and chances are she’s in for a long, hard battle with her own body – and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

    • Alleycat says:

I like her too. I thought she was hilarious on Wizards of Waverly Place, she should really try to get back on another comedy tv show (like a FRIENDS). I feel like most of those drug rumors came from blind items, and it’s just rude now that they keep continuing it.

I’m guessing the fact that she’s so average is what makes her appealing to younger girls. She doesn’t have unattainable good looks or amazing talent at what she does – she’s just like any other person you’d meet everyday. Very unintimidating, “Average girl, average problems” that makes her relatable to teens. She also gives the impression that her fame is solely due to “hard work” and not talent, so I guess that gives people the idea that anything is possible. Take your average girl at the mall, throw some mascara and a purse and they’d be interchangeable.

    • Cleo says:

You’re the second person in this thread to say that and I’m honestly shocked to read it. I think she’s absolutely stunning even by Hollywood standards.

  7. Ann says:

I don’t get why she is as popular as she is but I’ve never seen anything shes acted in. She clicks with the kids theses days, I guess. She makes me kind of uncomfortable because she looks so young. I feel the same way about Ariana Grande (although she actually can sing…). Her relationship with The Weeknd gives me the creeps too. She looks like a teenager and he sings about banging teenagers. It’s icky.

  8. Henny in my Hand says:

Yeah, she’s gonna get her heart broken in this relationship! I feel bad for saying it, as I’m a big fan of the Weeknd’s music, but he’ll put her through the same heartbreak that Justin did. Rumour has it he’s already started down that road with an Irish glamour model. “I feel it coming” and it’s not going to be good.
